Alone.
Sad and alone.
That was the life he had, and that was the life he expected to always have. Shivering with a complete lack of self control, the frantic male took a fearful step forward. His eyes trying to hold back the tears his heart wanted to push out. He was miserable, and for the longest time he had been. The last time he could ever remember being happy was as a pup, meeting her, and being accepted by her had been the best time of his life. But as with all good things, it was forced to come to an abrupt end. Leaving him as he was, alone. Wincing his eyes shut tight, the male let out a loud yelp, as his back feet twitched behind him. He shuddered at the involuntary movements and took a deep breath, hoping it would help to relax his fragile nerves. But it did little to help, and he simply gave in allowing the tears to flow, and for his heart to wail out a long, cold howl that filled the night air with an aweful chill.

Having left his mate behind at their den, Frozenheart had set out on his own. Promising his beloved he would be home soon. She hadn't wanted him to leave her side, as much as he hadn't wanted to leave himself, but like every other time they were forced to separate he had managed. Although tonight, he was doing so by choice. It wasn't her night to go scouting, now was he out on any specific scouting jobs, he just had this strange feeling. A feeling you get low in your gut, that something is going to happen. He'd learned as a young pup never to ignore such a feeling, and had since trained himself to recognize them. Tonight was one of those such times.
Staring up at the sky, hoping for a sign he found himself questioning his gut for the first time in a long time. He'd been out here quite a while, and still there were no signs of distress in any direction. He sighed, kicking around a rock as he followed the stars in no certain direction. His attention was focused, but on what he really had no clue.
With one final kick of the rock, his answer found him. It was a long high pitched howl, unlike anything he had ever heard before. The voice sounded pained, and immediately he kicked into action. With no thought of his own well being, the male charged into action, following the sound to it's creator.
----
It took some time, but he finally managed to locate the howls. They were coming from somewhere along this riverbank, now he just had to locate the one doing the howling.
"Hello? I... I don't mean to intrude, I am simply here to help you! NOT harm you. Could you please tell me where you are?"

The new voice, broke through the male's howls and left his blood running cold. He froze in place, and immediately his shaking became that much worse. Try as he might to suppress them, they continued, nearly causing the male to become motion sickness. he wanted to run, to get away but he knew it was no longer an option. The male was closing in, and he hadn't a clue in the world of his presence. Until now.
A small groan escaped the male's lips as he frantically shot glances in both directions. He could hide, YES! That was it! He would hide, hide somewhere that no one could ever find him!
But a quick look around told him that wasn't much of an option. He was in a barren area, surrounded by nothing more than small pouches of grass, and the river. Sure, he could jump, but he'd likely succumb to the cold weather before he had time to escape.
Quivering from head to toe, Timidstep took in a deep intake of breath, just as the shadow stepped forward out of the darkness ahead of him.

Before he even made it into the clearing he could tell things weren't going to go well. He could hear the groans coming from the male, and his first thought had been on injury. But a quick sniff of the air held no signs of blood. He could only hope it wasn't a sprain or something of the like. So that he could at least get the male back to the pack, where surely someone would be able to help him.
Biting his lip, and staring up at the stars, Frozenheart stepped out of the shadows and into view of the male. His first note was that the male was standing, so naturally a sprain wasn't in his thoughts anymore. But he was visibly shaking, had something attacked him? Startled him? Was he sick?
Frozenheart kicked into high gear, and rushed over to the male. His feet coming to a halt just before the male's face. He studied it for a moment, taking in the look of fear and sadness underneath. A pang of guilt washed over him, and he shook it off, far more concerned with his well being than what his eyes could possibly be saying.
"I'm Frozenheart and I mean you no harm. I-I heard you cries, and I wanted to be sure you were OK..." He spoke slowly, and moved even slower. Noting that the male was at least slightly spooked, he knew quick movements would only hurt his chances of helping him. "Will you please let me inspect you?"

"N-No C-Closer..."
The words were jagged and broken as he spoke them, but he hoped his point would come across. He didn't want this wild dog anywhere near him, and if need be he would do what it took to keep it that way. Another shudder rolled down his spine, and the male's back legs kicked out from under him. "NOT - A s-s-s-tep!"
Timidstep glared down the male as he evened the distance between them. The space they now shared was extremely uncomfortable, and he wasn't happy with it at all. But, at least the other male didn't seem intent on harming him. No quite the contrary, he wanted to help?
HA! How could he help? Male wild dogs were his problem! They had made him the weak link that he was, and he would never be the same again because of them. Yet another shudder. Wincing as a memory ran through his mind, Timidstep violently shook his head at Frozenheart. "N-n-no! S-s-s-tay back, i'll be fINE!" He squeaked, losing control of his own voice volume. He wanted to thank the male for his time, and be on his way but he knew it wouldn't be that easy.

This male had such a strange way of talking, which only further startled poor Frozenheart's worry. He knew something was wrong with this new male, but he truly had no clue exactly what it would. He had also discovered that he held a strong scent of his pack. Though he had never seen him before, and he reckoned he would recognize someone as strange and out of place as this one was.
"A-Are you sure? Please you don't seem well - I can help you. I promise to do you no harm!" Frozenheat was pleading, the male to allow him to help but the male was simply not interested, and Frozenheart could see that. The idea that someone would pass up such an offer of willingness to help was a slightly new concept to him. He honestly wasn't sure whether to take it as a nice thing, or something rude. But he shrugged it off, his attention more focused on the male's movements. Although he wouldn't step closer due to his wishes, he had promised nothing of looking.

His mind was running frantic with a million different scenarios that could unravel from this encounter. A million scenarios, and not a single one of them ended well. The frantic nature boiling beneath his skin, soon began to show in his actions once more. His face was twitchy, his paws shook, and his tail was vibrating as though he was sitting on a piece of ground victimized by an Earthquake.
His head twitched from left to right as his eyes scanned the area for a means of escape. He understood this male's intent, but he wanted no part in it. And could anyone really blame him after how he'd been treated? NO! And if they chose the blame him, that wasn't his problem.
Again the male pleaded for permission to help him, and again he refused. Absolutely sure, he couldn't stay here any longer. He noted the other male's rough edged paw, and took it as a sign that he wasn't the best runner. He could totally outrun this male.
And that's what he did. With one perfectly timed full body jerk, the male was on his feet and darting away within a matter of seconds. His whole body quickly disappearing into the landscape beyond. Tears of relief ran down his cheeks, as he pushed the Earth beneath his feet to go faster. He hoped to the gods he would never encounter that wild dog again. Mostly because it would be shameful to look such a kind soul in the eye after simply abandoning them.

"I pro-"
Poor Frozenheart hadn't even had the time to finish his sentence before the male was gone. Completely out of sight. For a moment, his first instinct was to follow him, but with a glance back, the male was already out of his sight. Probably not the best idea to chase him down.
His draw dropped in shock and disappointment, as he stood there in disbelief. He had tried ... so hard to get help for him ... only to be shafted in the end...
Another pang of guilt washed over the male as he realized he'd been unabel to help someone who was truly in need of his assistance.
And with one final look back in the male's direction, he heaved a heavy sigh and decided to return home to his Lightfoot. Perhaps she could make better sense of the situation and make him feel better about the odd turn things had taken.
