The pack lands had been deserted. Now what was left of the pack traveled in small groups headed to some aimless gods knew where place. Among Junichi's group was Bura, Opka and Rena. The blue jackal felt a little out of place being among Bura and her pups having no real relation or even love interest. It was the possible fear of Bura's sister Anansi that had caused him to choose to travel with Bura over her. It was also the possible crush he had on Rena that made him also stick to Bura's side. Opka was a sorry excuse for a son after all.
The group had temperaly settled by a watering hole. Plenty of larger prey animals had the same idea. Most of them did not see a small traveling group of jackals as any threat. Some mothers just made sure to keep an extra eye on their young. It was obvious they were not trusted, but they were not shunned either. Junichi could respect that. Given the chance anyone in his little group would try to nab a defenseless new born. The meat was the softest then.
This thought only made Junichi lick at his chops as he thought. Any sort of food right about now would be nice. Food had always been unstable, but now traveling, it was even more of a question when food would come their way. He sat at the edge of the watering hole, tongue hanging out, and just thought on what he'd do if he had a nice leg of zebra right now. It was possible he thought of zebra because of a small group of zebra just across the way at the watering hole. Junichi was hungry. He was sure Bura would order either her kin or him to fetch something for her to eat at any moment.

Rena had been born when the pack had deserted the pack lands. She heard talk about the old times but never an explanation as to why they had left. To the yellow jackal it sounded like a paradise and it just depressed her to know they were likely never going to see said paradise again. But that was just life she supposed. Living the rogue life was all she knew.
She'd been watching Junichi by the watering hole for some time. Most of her wandered exactly what he was planning. The female assumed he was planning something at the very least with how he oogled the zebra across the way. Of course the zebra saw the small jackal clan as little to no threat. Their little ones stayed closely watched of course.
Slowly, Rena padded her way to the male jackal and nuzzled his shoulder curiously.
"Your torturing your self with that longing look," The female nipped at his ear playfully. "We can probably find something worth eating else where."

The nipping was more then enough for him to snap out of his thoughts. The male gave Rena a look but softened said look when he realized who was nipping. He had a soft spot for the yellow jackal.
"Is Bura already having you scout for weaklings else where?" He was half kidding. Really, the male wouldn't put it past Bura to already be pushing for some fresh meat. He actually wouldn't mind looking for some weakness in this zebra herd across the way. The way they saw them as no threat was insulting. Jackals were very much to be taken seriously.

"Well you know Mom... err Bura.." Rena gave him a small smile. "She's already got Opka out scouting. I'm not sure how wise that is," Opka was Rena's older brother. He was weak and small though and by old pack views, looked down on.
"She her self actually went out to scout too so uh... I suppose we should see what we can find as well," There was a head tilt.

Hearing that Opka of all jackals was told to go scout really irked the blue male. Opka? He was so little and just... Opka? Of all the jackals to send out, in the males opinion, Opka was probably one of the worst. Though the little clan really did need to start thinking up just how they were going to survive.
"Well we should probably scout too if thats the case." His eyes shifted around the pool, " I don't think actually scouting out here is the best option though..." Creatures around here were already very aware of the fact they where there. That gave them a huge disadvantage and was one of the reasons Junichi did not like this temporarily settling thing ... here ... of all places. They were out in the open and a joke to animals passing through. The male wasn't sure what Bura was exactly planning.
"Where do you think we should start?"

Junichi wagged his tail a little with out meaning too. She thought it was a good idea? He stopped his wagging the moment he realized he was doing it.
"Umm.." The blue jackal scanned about. Nothing seemed all that promising. Every which way he looked he could see how well guarded they were being. If the pack wanted a kill then they would have to work together. But since they were all split up now it seemed a little to bold for Junichi's tastes.
But then off to the side he saw a vulture circling high in the air.
"Deaths black wings votes this way." The male started towards where he saw the bird hoovering high as discretely as possible. You never knew if the wrong eyes were watching. No need attract rivals.

Junichi didn't have to say anything. Rena saw what he was looking at and hurried after the blue jackal quietly. Living as scavengers had prepped Rena to know you did not want to attract to much attention to your self if you were scavenging.
The thick grass offered a great cover for the two. Rena expertly weaved her way through the tall grass as if her paws had a mind of their own. The black wings of death usually did not lie. Something out here must have died. And then the thick scent of blood and death smacked her nostrils full on. There was something out here for sure. Rena licked her chops and continued forward.

The two slowly progressed forward. Junichi lead the way and Rena kept close behind. The scent was beginning to intoxicate both jackals by now. The closer they got the strong the musk of death got. Slowly, the grass started to part and give way to the kill. To both of the jackals horror they found the dead carcass of a half eaten jackal pup. Junichi was the first to back up in to Rena who let out a yelp of horror.
The vulture landed on the departed pups body. If vultures could have grinned, this one would be from ear to ear.
"Only a matter of time my lovelies. Soon my beak will know your flesh too just like this pup." The vulture pecked one of the pups eyes out and swallowed it hole in front of the pair. Junichi had been scared but now he was annoyed.
"Big words for some one who probably didn't kill that." The jackal took a bit of a bold step forward only to be met with a harsh cackle from the vulture.
"Does it matter in the end? All things die and at some point you too will. This pup I assume had the sad story the old savanna usually has. Motherless probably ... and starved to death from the tastes of its bile." It gave another harsh cackle. But the cackle was silenced, not by Junichi or even Rena for that matter, but by Bura. In a matter of seconds the birds neck was snapped and it lay dead before the three. Opka soon joined from behind.
"So.. Seems like you two had the right idea," Bura's tone was cold. She made no mention of the lifeless pups body just a few feet away from her self and the rest of the group. Opka, on the other hand, made a face and was quick to join his mothers side in fear of the dead jackal pup.
"Come now you three. Death is part of the savanna after all. This bird , that jackal, even us could go at any moment. Can't be to picky what we eat now can we?" She began ripping the creatures wing off. She tossed it to Junichi. "Good work. You have tihis choice meat for your efforts." Bura ripped the other wing off and threw it to Rena and said nothing.
"Opka you can eat after you bury that dreadful sight of a pup. Its spoiling out in this sun.... Might as well let it bake underground so it doesn't stink this place up entirely." She said nothing more. Bura was done talking, it was time to feast. And the dark jackal did just that. Junichi joined in on the action with the little meat he was gifted as did Rena.
Opka was left to the gruesome task of buring the dead. He complied and started to carry the carcass else where while the rest of the group feasted. If it could be called a feast. There wasn't much to be had from one vulture between four jackals.
