It was her first day of training, and Amarus was as nervous as she could be. It wasn't, admittedly, all that nervous... but for her, it was enough to be noticeable. She believed and understood what the horseman had said to her: to get to the top, one needed to fight those who might be better. Amarus never sought an easy win. It was in her best interests to fight those who were better than her, so that she could learn, improve, and constantly aim to be the best of all.
Besides, that's what kept her awake and alert most days: the thrill of a fight or of being somewhere she ought not be. This time, she found herself sparring against a thin woman with broad hips, who wore bones brained into her hair, and sported some peculiar pelts. Her specialty, Amarus learned the hard way, appeared to be some kind of flying kick.
She only barely made it by: Amarus had grabbed the clansman's ankle after one of her kicks, and twisted to send them sprawling, then pinned them in the dirt.

Both of the fighters were clearly tired from their previous brawl. Amarus only had enough energy for defense, for the early portion of the fight; she blocked blows with her forearms, tucking her face away to save it the damage. The brawler she was against, for her part, only offered half-hearted jabs anyway, testing her defense.
As soon as Amarus was able to punch, with any force at all, the contestant was down. Next up?

Amarus bounced her weight from one foot to the other, preparing for the next round. Hopefully it would not be too trying... both times she had nearly lost, but defeated her opponent at the last second. The first opponent, however, had been much harder. She was still a little dizzy from how hard they'd hit, but she was ultimately stronger in the end, more eager to prove herself. They'd gone down hard.

Amarus wondered what it would be like to be flesh and blood, like she imagined the Horsemen were. Well, those of War, anyway; they seemed to alive. Strong, yes, but also alive. She wondered what it would be like to bleed if cut, to feel their pulse race, to wipe sweat from their eyes and struggle with all of those things in combat.
As a ghost, she would never know any of it. Perhaps it made her better, because of her calm exterior. Perhaps it made her weak.

The rounds had gone so fast. Amarus was much happier in War than she had been in Conquest, despite the lack of lotus blossoms. If Amarus could combine the two, she would likely be blissful forever; here, she had the cool collection of battle to keep her occupied. There, she'd felt like a living thing with all her emotions.
It was her last round, so she had mentally prepared herself to fight her hardest in this fight. She sustained a couple mild blows, nearly got winded from a blow to the stomach, but ultimately she rained down as many blows as her opponent, until she swept the feet out from under her with one of her favourite kicks. The woman fell hard, staying down for a pause too long.
Amarus was in mild disbelief, and then extremely encouraged, after all her opponents had been vanquished. Time to break for the day!
