There is no tent or underground cavern designated for this class, just a couple of strategically placed horsemen of famine to point students in the direction of a dirty heap of rags and fur piled at the center of a sand crater.  It's a windy day in the desert, but this temporary valley is fairly well shielded and will remain so until the winds change.  When they do, it is unlikely that this pit will survive. It will be filled in as another is created, obliterating any sign of today's activities.

As more boils and ghouls make their way into the area, a few of the particularly observant ones might notice that the artfully draped pile of debris in their midst is actually a horseman, so densely wrapped in sandy colored cloth, beads, skins, and feathers that only a slender strip of skin around her beady eyes remains visible.  Her gaze darts from student to student, lingering on some longer than others, but there is no additional movement from the figure for quite some time.  Any attempts to converse with or poke and prod at the woman only result in her closing her eyes until the offending party moves away.

Eventually, however, class must begin.  Once a fair number of students have arrived and are milling about the crater, the pile of refuse begins to shift and creak, the sand that has accumulated on its surface pouring off like a system of waterfalls.  The horseman's spine straightens and her arms fan out smoothly to either side. It is impossible to truly determine her age at first, but she moves with a sprightly grace that seems to imply she's on the younger side of the spectrum. She raises her thin, tattooed hands, and waits for near silence before she speaks.

"I am called Dharu."  Her voice is muffled by her many layers of clothing, but she seems aware of this because she remains surprisingly clear.  Dharu's eyes narrow in what can only be amusement, and when she speaks again her tone only serves to reinforce her good humor. "Welcome to cooking with the famine clan."

Hello and welcome to cooking class! Daily updates will be posted at around 5pm PDT, or 7 hours before the minisite rollover. For OOC questions, feel free to PM me; for IC ones, quote me, bold your question, and Dharu will get to you as soon as she can.

If you miss Day 1 or 2 of class, you may complete the old assignments when you enter, but beyond that, it will be too late to make things up. In addition, you will receive no Horseman Points for these made up days.

LET'S DO THIS

DAY ONE

"Now, I know how anxious you all must be to get started..."  Dharu briefly eyes some of the more bored students nearby before continuing.  "But there is more to crafting a meal than throwing a couple of sides of pathling on a grill."  The horseman rifles through her robes for a moment, drawing out a stack of slightly wrinkled paper.  She shuffles through the crowd, handing out one sheet to each student present before the rest disappear back into her clothing.  On each piece is an identical list of ingredients with a helpful, if vague, guide on where one might locate each of the items.

"My clan never trusts that others will be there to sustain us. We never take our surroundings for granted, never believe that simply because we expect a bountiful harvest, that one will come.  Whether feasting or fighting, we are prepared for anything.  We must protect and provide for our Queen, no matter what lies in wait!"

Dharu stops speaking and slumps slightly, as if her temporary fervor had been holding her upright.  Her arms disappear into her robes again, but this time they don't reemerge.  When she speaks again, her voice is back at a normal volume, but no less muffled.

"I am aware that many of the more ephemeral among us do not eat at all, so gathering food might seem trivial to some.  In addition, creatures of Halloween do not truly require physical sustenance, although a good meal can bring comfort regardless of need.  Even so, what you learn here today can easily be applied elsewhere.  Always be on the lookout for how something seemingly worthless can benefit you.  Flowers become food, a blood-soaked femur, a weapon."  She chuckles softly, the sound almost lost in her clothing.

"The lists I have given you present a small sampling of the plants and animals one might encounter on the Isle of Famine.  They all can be found a short distance from where we stand and, believe it or not, can be used in combination to make a variety of nutritious meals."  The horseman leans close to Johnny Danger, almost as if she's about to ask for an autograph.  "But be warned... they can also be used to create a wholly unpleasant meal, or even a poisonous one." Dharu's cackle forces its way through the fabric around her mouth as her hands find the warm desert air once more. She shoos the students out of the safety of their sand hollow, chattering all the while.

"Go!  Explore!  When you've gathered three ingredients, return here to store them until morning.  Those sheets have all the information you need to succeed!"  Chuckling again, this time at her not-so-clever little rhyme, the horseman huddles in place, almost shrinking in size as she wiggles back into her robes and resumes her cover as a pile of debris.

Find Your Ingredients!

Roll 1d6 in three different posts.  Match your rolls to the list below and RP your character finding each corresponding ingredient separately.  Don't worry if you have more than one of the same ingredient. (If your character has any objections to killing sand rats or salamanders, you may continue to roll until you have three of something that doesn't have a face, or they can bring the animals back alive and Dharu will take care of the rest.)

Once again, please do not roll all three dice in one post.

When your student has collected their ingredients, they may leave them in the little sandy cavern that's located on one wall of the crater Dharu is standing in. They are then free to go!

The more obvious clusters of these flowers are found growing near the desert's stable fixtures, like rocks.  Due to the shifting nature of the sand, however, they can also be uncovered elsewhere if you're willing to dig a little.

Sand Rats
Did you just see something moving out of the corner of your eye?  It was probably a sand rat.  If you're quick, smart, or both, you can easily find a way to catch one.

Edible Rocks
They might not be the tastiest items, but these rocks leach essential nutrients when soaked in liquid.

Murky Water
Found on the silty banks of the oasis, this water is much easier to obtain than the clean stuff in the middle.  In fact, if you try to scoop up any of the clear water, a pack of very angry salamanders will rush to defend their precious spring.

Very Angry Salamanders
You've disturbed the angry salamanders near the oasis.  Not your best plan, since they're prone to attack, but at least they're slow so you can pick a couple of them off.

DAY TWO

Dharu is notably absent at the start of the second day of class, although the quiet famine clansmen in charge of directing the students of Halloween still point them toward the crater.  The sandy valley that was so prominent yesterday has been partially filled in, but it is much less windy today, so much so that without the sounds that the gathering students can't help but make, the desert would seem eerily silent.

Those looking to check on the ingredients they collected yesterday might be disappointed by what they find.  The sandy cavern Dharu had the students use as a locker of sorts has been filled in, and those who try to dig down and locate it again will find the space empty.  It seems someone was busy last night.

After an uncomfortably lengthy stretch of time, a somewhat unfamiliar horsewoman of famine approaches the group, a pair of pale, knee-high blobby things trailing after her. Between them is a sled of sorts, and on the sled is an assortment of delicious cookies. There are also three stacks of not so delicious things: some sand, a heap of tiny beaks, and a pile of scorpion stingers. On another sled behind the first is a series of shelves, each with a student's name on it. Upon closer examination, they will find their previous ingredients safely stored inside.

"Hello scarelings!" Wait. It seems that this strange clanswoman is Dharu after all! She has emerged from her cocoon to stand proudly in what might be described as... the complete opposite of what she had on yesterday. It's a good thing she doesn't appear to be much over thirty years old or the sight might have been a more disturbing one.

"Here, here, here, here, here, here, here," she mutters, travelling down the row of students and handing each two items from her cart, seemingly at random. "As important as it is to find nourishment from one's environment, it is equally important to make use of what we are given." She nods. "Talk amongst yourselves! Have a cookie! That is all." She takes a seat in the sand and soaks in the confusion, pointing the boils and ghouls to the shelves on the cart when it seems they don't know where to put their new ingredients.

Additional Ingredients

You need two more ingredients to make anything of worth. Roll 2d4 to see what you have been given. If you are not happy with them, you may trade one or both of today's items with another student if they agree to the trade. RP it up!

The items you rolled from yesterday all have an OOC "score" attached to them. The scores of the items you obtain today will be added to those hidden ones, and their totals will come into play tomorrow. It is not necessarily a bad thing to have a negative score, nor is it necessarily good to have a positive one, so do what you feel.

DAY THREE

It's nearly midnight when the students are summoned again.  Dharu sweeps into their communal dorm and gathers the various creatures of Halloween up almost reverently, silently leading the group outside.  She is wearing more clothing than yesterday, but less than she did on the first day of class, and the reason why is made clear when they reach the open air.  Nighttime in the desert can be rather chilly.

The horsewoman's destination is not the sandy crater where her previous classes were held, but a series of dented metal domes half buried in the sand. Near the domes is the sled containing the ingredients gathered during class, still carefully labeled and separated by student.

"It is time to cook!" Dharu says, clapping her hands once.  "Your things are here," she gestures to the shelves, "Please choose an oven and begin!" She points to the domes. "And be careful. They're still hot from the sun."

As the students approach the shelves they will see that their ingredients have been lovingly murdered and skinned (if applicable), then placed in neat rows on a metal tray. It is up to them to arrange the items in a pleasing fashion, although who exactly they're trying to please is anybody's guess at this point.

Dharu stations herself nearby, ready to field any questions the students might have. Once their meals have been in the ovens for about ten minutes, she perks up and claps again, pointing out into the darkness.

"They come!"

All of a sudden, a twitchy little animal runs out of the desert and into one of the students' ovens. It looks like a cross between a ferret and a turtle and is a sandy brown color to better blend with its surroundings.

"These are the teruu. Do not be alarmed. They are mostly harmless, and they greatly appreciate the food you have prepared for them."

Mixing, Cooking, and Summoning

Please note: This day and the one that follows take place within the same hour long stretch at around midnight. Do not have your character leave the thread at the end of today, because tomorrow's activities only occur about a half an hour after today's and it would be kind of silly for them to wander off. (They may still do all the training and ORP/PRPs that you would like in this section of the guild since you are allowed to be in those sorts of RPs as well as a classroom at the same time.)

Anyway, today the students will finally be cooking the items they've scavenged. Please RP them placing their trays in the oven they have chosen. Then roll 1d4 (you may do this all in one post if you wish) to determine the sort of teruu that has approached your student's meal. An even roll denotes a positive teruu, an odd roll a negative one.

The values of all of your items are below. I have added them myself, but I could easily be wrong so feel free to check my math if you'd like. :) Note your final score and the polarity of your teruu at the bottom of your cooking post.

2: Wasteland Flowers (+3)

DAY FOUR

Several minutes pass during which the teruu do nothing more threatening than a bit of noisy chewing. Then, without warning, one of the animals stands up straight and begins to hum. The majority of its brethren join in, and slowly these creatures begin to mutate, growing in size until the ovens they previously inhabited are no more than stylish metal hats.

"Sometimes," Dharu says, her voice low, "Things go wrong despite our best intentions."

The teruu attack.

When the battle is over, the clanswoman has vanished.

Fighting Mutants Created by Food

Well, that's not good. It seems the teruu who ate meals of an opposite polarity to their own have kind of gone all crazy. It's time to... FIGHT THE TERUU!

All teruu have 15HP. Student HP and attack dice vary:

Quest students/Y1: 30HP/2d6
Y2: 40HP/2d8
Y3: 50HP/2d10

Your first die is the amount of damage you do to the teruu you are attacking that roll. Subtract 3 from the second die you roll to calculate the amount of damage the teruu does back to you. Teruu cannot do negative damage, so if the value of your second die minus 3 is less than zero, they do no damage that round. You may attack your own teruu as many times as you need to in order to subdue it.

The students with tame teruu can just sit back and cuddle them while they watch their fellows fight for their lives, but that wouldn't be very nice, now would it? All keepers of happy teruu may attack any other teruu five times total. That is five total attacks to other people's teruu, not five rolls per teruu. Students who have defeated their teruu may also attack the others as long as they only do so a maximum of five times.

Here is my record of who has hostile teruu. Again, I may be wrong, so please check to see if the polarity of your teruu is the opposite of the final polarity of your food before fighting.

Hamika thought that a cooking class lead by one of the Famine clan was rather... ironic. Famine was a lack of food, and yet here they were cooking. In a crater.

Maybe she really just needed to suspend her judgement until it was all over, yeh?

The little zombie fished around for ingredents and found some edible rocks. Or at least she thought they were edible. Though when had rocks ever been good to eat? The ghoul was incredibly confused and decided to just look for the rest of her ingredients.

[entering day 1]

The dragon's tail twitched, his eyes narrowed in a mixture of curiosity and suspicion, a hand raised to shield his eyes from the sand and wind. Though he found some relief in the sheltered crater, he could still hear the rush of the wind, feel the sand against his scales. He was not sure he liked this any better than the starless space of the underground caverns. Or maybe he did, it was open, seemingly endless, and he found himself wondering how the stars shone out here. Were they as brilliant and pure as they were at the high mountain peeks?

He had paid little attention to the seemingly lifeless form of cloth and sand, perhaps it was that he had simply not noticed, more occupied with searching for some markers on the desert surroundings. It was thus that he nearly jumped back at the sudden movement of what he had only seen as a landmark a moment before, startled at the sound of a voice who's source he had not seen.

This was their instructor? His gaze was one of curiosity, remaking at how well she had blended in to her surroundings. To be honest, he found that trait far more interesting at that moment than whatever class she was going to teach them.

Wait, cooking? Had she said cooking class? He blinked in surprise, he had certainly not expected a class on cooking. Hmm, he liked to cook, and it would be certainly be less stressful than his week in the war clan, maybe, well at least he'd go home with fewer bruises, right?

He was silent as he looked over the list of ingredients, his tail twitching thoughtfully as he stepped away from his classmates on his search for the items on the list. Hmm, he was not sure how he felt about these items, he'd never heard of such ingredients, where was he meant to--

What was that? His head turned, eyes narrowed as he caught sight of something moving through the sands. Quietly he crept forward, searching for whatever creature may have scurried past. For a moment he thought his senses had deceived him, but then he saw it, the long tail, the small furry body, a rat? A rat, it was on the list, oh jack you have got to be kidding me. He did -not- eat furry creatures, he did not like the taste and he did not like the texture.

Hmph, fine, at the very least catching the rat gave him a chance to test his skills. Silently, Sheridan crouched, his tail flicking like a predator stalking it's prey. The rat hadn't seen him, or maybe it hadn't acknowledged him as a threat, a mistake it would soon come to regret. The dragon leapt, surging forward, a hand reaching to catch the rat in a single grasp, talons curling around the creature as it tried in vain to escape and then a moment later fell silent.

On ingredient down, on to the next.

Oo look! Something living and very much edible, if you liked rats. Hamika didn't really like rats. She chased the creatures about, having around as much luck as a kid who was trying to catch air. With a huff and a turn of her cap, she flung her arm at the rat and gripped it.

Her elbow flailed her upper arm and bounced the rat around, snapping its neck if her grip didn't do it already. With a calm look of success, the ghoul reattached her arm at the shoulder and went looking for the next bit of stuff she needed.

Between being underground and being out there in the desert, the ghoul was leaning towards the latter despite the arid climate out in the open. Then again, the heat was another thing, but the winds that swept across the desert did well to cool if down if just by a little. The ghoul was glad she was dressed well for the desert for most part, though she had to shield her face to avoid getting hit by the sand that was being swept up with the strong gusts of wind.

Edel could swear she saw something in that pile of debris blink.

It didn't come as too much of a surprise then that the pile suddenly stood up to reveal the horsewoman who would be their teacher. As for the class – cooking. She was feeling slightly better about the class already.

The ghoul listened intently to what Dharu had to say, keeping her words in mind has she set off from the sand crater, studying the piece of paper she was issued as she left. Written on the sheet of paper was a description about ... edible rocks. She quickly understood that those rocks would leach essential nutrients when soaked in water ... which probably meant that the rocks should preferably not be obtained near a water source lest they would yield no more nutrients.

The frost demon took to searching near the areas of vegetation around the oasis, uncovering several rocks that she thought might fit the description. She took it that the rocks with a more chalky nature and greater porosity were what she was looking for. Picking up those and putting them in the sack, Edel continued her search for more unlikely ingredients to be found in this desert.

Pushing past the vegetation, many of which didn't match the descriptions given, the ghoul stumbled upon yet some more rocks. Edel bent over and scooped a few more of those into her bag. It would make a rather bland meal, she thought, unless somehow the nutrients in them had some taste. However, it was still better than nothing, and she had to remind herself that the tribe she was in was Famine no less.

Picking up one of the rocks for examination, the ghoul figured that there really wasn't any way to test its primary permeability unless she actually tested it with some water from the oasis. Speaking of which, she might find something other than rocks there too. Edel slung the bag over her shoulder and headed towards the body of water within the oasis. Dipping the edge of the rock into the water, the ghoul could see parts of the rock that were above water turning a shade darker, indicating that the stone was indeed taking in water. The murkiness of the water at the fringes of the pool prevented her from seeing any visible leaching if any – she would just have to assume she was on the right track with those rocks then.

Apparently, her little testing at the spring had attracted a small swarm of angry looking salamanders ... who were very angry with her for disturbing the peace that their pool of water. The spots on their slimy skin were glowing an alarming shade of rage red, the creatures themselves hissing and spitting at the ghoul as they approached, waddling towards her clumsily on all fours.

A quick check against the list of ingredients confirmed that these salamanders would make a pretty nice meal. Edel grinned.

The rock in her hand was tossed straight into the head of the nearest salamander, killing it on the spot. Edel hadn't originally known her aim to be so deadly, so it might have been that that one week spent with War had groomed her to be a pretty fine killer. Of salamanders. Of course.

The ghoul was glad that she had been taught to be able to fight with the things she could find around her, she didn't think that the lesson would have been put into application so quickly. More rocks were thrown and some sharp sticks were stabbed at the reptilian creatures until the rest had the sense to scuttle away. Looking at the almost too vibrantly coloured skin of the salamanders, Edel thought it best to scoop them into the bag without direct skin contact. Who knows?

With her bag significantly heavier than what she had first started off with, the ghoul headed back to the sandy crater and deposited her finds amongst the pile of rags and fur. She had almost forgotten that Dharu lay hidden in one of them, and the ghoul took some time to come across the pair of eyes that peeked out of one of the piles, according the horsewoman with a respectful bow before she headed off for the day.

((Entering Day One))

So far, despite being away from his closest friends and his bonded, Alex was actually enjoying his experience on Famine. The fact that he had spent most of this time underground, distracting himself with exploring the multiple caves, tunnels and caverns probably helped. He felt comfortable underground, enjoyed the feeling of the cool air against his skin much better then the hot humidity of the jungle the week before. And then, of course, he had surrounded himself with ghouls, and who wouldn't be pleasantly distracted by that?

But then Alex was forced above ground for class time, and distaste was suddenly written clearly across his face. A desert, a wasteland. It was like the beach all over again, only with dryer air. The heat was nearly unbearable, and the zomboil longed to dart back underground, to immerse himself in cool comfort once more. Of course, he could not do that, not if he hoped to pass this class, and prove his worth to the horsemen (that's what he was here to do, right? Well, that's what Yin told him he was supposed to be doing, at least.)

And so, Alexander struggled along through the sand, his ambling, shuffling pace made even more agonizingly slow. He followed along the troupe of students headed towards the class, steadily falling more and more behind. It seemed to take him ages just to get to the edge of the pit that their class was to be held in. He gazed down that wall of sand apprehensively. There was just no graceful way for him to do this, was there? He gave it a try, though, and took a couple of tentative steps forward in the sand, trying to keep his footing beneath him but failing miserably as the sand shifted beneath his feet, cascading like a small waterfall, moving him along instead of letting him choose his own pace. His balance, always a precarious thing, was quickly thrown off. He flailed his arms, but to no avail. Within just a couple short feet of sliding down that sandy decline, Alex was suddenly falling face first into the sand, and then rolling, rolling, rolling all the way to the bottom, flipping head over feet so many times he thought it would never stop.

Until he finally lay sprawled out on the ground, arms and legs splayed as he blinked his eyes open and stared at the sky above, then pushed himself slowly to a sitting position, and then again to his feet. He was sure everybody had seen that, though thankfully, for the moment, nobody had commented.

Since he was perhaps one of the last to arrive, the class began shortly after, and he was somewhat surprised to see that the pile of rags in the middle of the pit was actually a horsemen, and in fact, their teacher. Again he was struck by just how different this clan appeared to be in comparison to the clan of war. The war teacher, Cybele, had been bold and proud, her very presence commanding attention. This teacher, while no less intriguing, did not hold nearly the same type of air.

Alex listened to the lecture with only the faintest of interest, his attention only truly grabbed when it became apparent what their lesson here on famine was to be.

Cooking.

Jacking seriously? Cooking?? It was like the entire world was out to get Alexander in some way. First his mother, then Xiu, and now this. Well, at least he had some experience with cooking, since his mom had decided it was something that he had needed to learn the last time he had been back home. Though zombies tended to just eat their food raw, and not bother with the actual cooking part. She had just taught him how to mix certain spices, things to flavor the meat with to make it more appetizing, among other things. And a lot of the things the famine teacher had to say made sense, since Alex was one of those who liked to eat for the sheer comfort and enjoyment of it, not because he necessarily needed to. And using a femur bone for a weapon? He glanced down to his own skeletal leg with a small smile, reminded of the time he had tried to club Yin across the head with one of his leg bones, and being told off for using it as a 'weapon'.

Eventually he was handed a list, and his eyes scanned down it, lips pursed in a straight line as he studied the words that were written. The task set for them for today did not seem too difficult, and he was fairly confident he could find the things needed.

And so, grabbing whatever other supplies might be necessary, he turned, and clambered his way back out of the pit, struggling all the while as every two steps he managed to take forward, he would slide back by at least one.

Out into the open desert once more, the wind whipping sand up to sting painfully into his eyes, Alex's gaze glanced around, only to settle on a nearby oasis. That would surely be the most logical place to find food, right? He shambled over towards it, standing near the edge and eyeing the murky still water around the edges. He could see that several yards further in, the water began to clear, until in the center it actually looked clean and pure. He debated for a time whether he aught to wade out into the water and at least attempt to obtain the water that was more clear looking, but changed his mind, deciding that was far too much work, and as most should know by now, Alex was far too lazy for that.

And so, he unscrewed the lid off of the jar he had snagged before leaving the 'classroom', bent down, and filled it nearly to the top with the very unappetizing looking murky water.

First Ingredient: Murky Water.

After settling into her new classroom for the week. Umi remembered her mistake in sitting in the front of the class from her last class. She decided to instead sit in the middle of class in hopes of not getting attack from mysterious creatures.

After listening to her new instructor discuss the lesson for day one she got up and went to see what she could find. She loved cooking even through she wasn't the best at it. She loved putting togeter ingredients and seeing what she could make. She started searching around the area until she founds some rocks. She picked one up to move out of way and was suprised as how light they felt.

Seeing that they were on the list she bagged a good amount of them and went on to see what else she could find.
