Salome stood looking at the letter in her hand. An Azrein? She's always wanted to be bonded with one of the fabled horses, and here she was, being asked to come and see if this Azrein would accept her. She'd been told all her life, by her mother and her sisters, that she was not worthy enough to be accepted by one of the special horses. She read the name of the master again and thought it sounded vaguely familiar, but she couldn't be sure. Who he was really didn't matter. It was his horse that mattered, and she reread his name again, Baron Dash. It was a wonderful name, and her imagination started forming an image in her mind of what he might look like. Azrein were not all alike, and therefore she was able to image all manner of images. She finally put the letter back in its envelope, set it down on the table and ran off to her room, to prepare herself for the journey.

It had taken her only twenty minutes to put on a clean dress, grab the letter and head out the door. If she walked at a brisk pace, it would take her a little over an hour to reach her destination. As she walked, she took in all the scents on the air and listened to the birds and animals around her. Everything seemed so much more full of life today, and she couldn't keep a smile from playing across her face. Her heart was pounding in her chest, but not from her brisk pace. It was pounding from the excitement she was feeling. A little over an hour later, the spires of the castle came into view, and she quickened her pace even more.

Arriving at the gate, she showed the guard the letter she had received, and he allowed her to enter. She had no idea where she was supposed to go, but someone came and escorted her to where Baron Dash was waiting. She looked around for the other people the letter had mentioned, but no one was around. She found that strange until she realized that it was probably due to her arriving first. It was then she realized she was being watched by the Azrein. He was more beautiful than anything her imagination had dreamed up, and she found herself walking slowing towards him. He was the first Azrein she had ever met, and she had no idea what to expect. How would she know if he chose her? More importantly, if he did chose her, how would she care for him? She didn't make a lot of money, as her mother and sisters were all gone now. She was a young woman living alone. Not many women like herself had a horse, because they didn't have the means to take care of one.

“Greetings young lady. You must be Salome. I am Baron Dash, as you no doubt have figured out by now.”

Her eyes almost came out of her head at his greeting. She'd no idea that they could talk. She tried to compose herself before she spoke. “Yes I am. However, I don't understand why I am here. I didn't know your master, although his name does sound vaguely familiar.”

“There is good reason Salome. My late master was …...” (to be finished if I win.)

Reo’s hand trembled as she hesitated to knock on the door of the dilapidated building. It would have been a lovely stonework house that might have indicated wealth from its two stories and well done if a bit gaudy wooden moldings. Clutching the mysterious letter in one hand she took a deep breath and knocked. She had traveled for a fortnight to get here, it would be pointless to turn back now. To her surprise a young man opened the door. He couldn’t have been more than 18, yet his hair was already a silvery color his cloths were that of a well to do servant. It seemed a strange contrast with the rest of the house. Blue eyes blinked at her while a melodic voice greeted her. “Hello. Who might you be?”

“Reoakee. I have a letter.” Reo held up the letter only to have it snatched from her hands surprisingly gently considering the speed the letter disappeared. The boy scanned the letter for a moment before looking up at Reoakee. “I’m terribly sorry this letter was meant for someone else. Still I suppose one more can’t hurt. This way please.” Turning on his heel he left Reoakee standing in the threshold. Shivering Reoakee followed in not quite sure what else to do. If the letter was meant for someone else shouldn’t they find them? Really how many others had names like her to start with? Further more the letter had arrived at her shop. How could it have been meant for someone else when it seemed so specifically tuned toward her? The longer she walked the more annoyed she became. By the time the boy stopped in front of a door she was ready to give him a good lecture. As she opened her mouth the door was cracked open and the sudden light surprised her. All this time she had been walking down a poorly lit hallway with room after room all of the ancient doors closed and dusted over with time. Why would one room be so bright when the rest of the house looked like something out of a bad nightmare?

“Inside please.” It didn't sound like a request. Reo sighed and decided to save the lecture for later. Might as well walk in be seen, get rejected so she could point out that they still needed to find the right person at least admit that she wasn't the wrong one. That part was not only hurtful but just outrageous. This was all so ridiculous. Looking at her boots she walked in to the room. “Yes. She’ll do.” Hearing a cultured voice she looked up at one of the strangest Azrein she had ever seen. She knew Azrein could have wings since her bonded Alu-lote had them, though she never imaged leather ones. “I umm.. am not your intended. The letter was ment for someone else.” It seemed like such a lame excuse given the line of thought she had just been pursuing. The stallion made a noise that she assumed was laughter. “Yes but you’ll do. After all fate has a role to play in this as well. I am Urðr.”

Carys was outside tending to the flower beds and the garden when the sound of steady hoof beats caressing the hard soil of the land of azrein caused her to stop her chores, well not really a chore since she adored nature, and look up towards the sound. Approaching was a young male, elegantly dressed who sat gracefully on a majestic looking azrein stallion who was draped in finery as well. Staring Carys wondered who this messenger had the honor of serving and why he was sent to her, she instinctively knew he was bringing a missive to her since she lived alone.

Standing quickly she brushed off the soil on the front of her green work dress, shook her arpon and washed her hands in the cool water in the bucket next to her feet. Raising a hand she smoothed her hair back and tightened her braid hoping she looked presentable.

The young man was suddenly in front of her and the stunning stallion stopped and lowered his head awaiting his rider's command. Standing there Carys could not help but stare at the stallion, he was beautiful. He was sleek, muscular and powerful. She always felt a pull to the azrein one she could not understand and none had ever talked to her in her mind as her sister's did. Wanting desperately to feel the connection she tried to read the stallion's thoughts but was interrupted by the sound of a cough that was meant for a clearing of the throat.

Carys reluctantly looked up to see the rider and he very discreetly lowered his eyes and nodded to her as he handed her a crisp white piece of parchment that had been sealed with wax and carried a seal that was unfamiliar. The writing on the front was elegant, fluid and written in a deep gold ink. Shockingly it was her full name which puzzled her. The rider waited patiently never speaking one word to her, she turned the parchment over and broke the seal. Reading the missive she was utterly stunned when it stated she was to go to the specified place and be presented to a azrein who has recently lost his master.

Tears formed in her eyes and she felt for the azrein who had lost his bonded. "How could one survive losing the other half to their soul?' she thought to herself. Realizing the young male still awaited her reply she shyly looked up "I thank you for bringing this missive to me, I know it had to be quite a journey since I live way out where no one hardly does. I will be honored to arrive and be given the rare opportunity to be graced with a azrein's presence, but before you go may I offer you refreshment and a chance to rest?" she said in a hushed tone. The young male seemed to be intent on something and she realized he was speaking to the azrein. He smiled "No thank you neither of us are in need of rest or refreshment, it was gracious of you to offer. We must be leaving, I have to return to give the answer of your missive which is a yes." with that stallion slowly backed up and turned taking off with a impressive stride and was gone quickly from her sight.

Sighing she turned and entered her cottage, she did not have a lot of time to get ready before she had to leave. She quickly washed, donned clean clothing, styled her hair into a neater braid, grabbed her basked which she placed food, drink and other necessities along with missive and headed out firmly shutting her door.

Walking swiftly her thoughts wandered as to what awaited her. Her heart broke at the thought of the azrein who lost his master. "He must be heart broken and feel so lost" she thought to herself. Her thoughts kept herself occupied as she walked. Knowing it would take half a day to reach her destination she reached into her basket and found a apple to eat as she walked preferring not to take the time to stop.

Her thoughts so consumed her she had not realized how quickly she reached her destination when she suddenly came upon the young male astride the stallion awaiting her at the end of the walkway. Stunned she shook her head as if to clear it. "I am here already?" she blurted out. She suddenly felt very silly but she could not take back her words. He simply nodded and descended from the stallion, offered his arm and escorted her to the arched doorway. She trembled but not in fear but from anticipation. She was nervous but she cherished the chance to be this close to a azrein. He opened to doorway and ushered her inside. He took her down a long hallway which suddenly stopped with another door, he opened the door and they stepped into a room, no she thought not a room but a chamber. She looked around and was stunned to find this chamber was not for a human but an azrein. The young male gracefully removed her hand and bowed before turning and leaving shutting the door with a soft click. Carys nervously glanced around and realized she was alone but not alone. "Odd I can not help but feel a presence but I do not see anyone" she said to herself. To keep herself from worrying she slowly moved about the chamber when suddenly a stallion stood in front of her. Stunned she could do nothing but stare in amazement, she was literally within touching distance of a azrein and it made her tremble.

"Do not tremble, you are safe" a voice suddenly was heard in her mind. "I would never hurt you, you know that do you not Carys?" she heard as the voice echoed through her mind. Her eyes grew big and her breathing shallow, had she really heard that voice in her mind? As in answer the stallion bowed his head and waited. Carys without thought reached her hand up and gently touched his face.

"I am Rhys and you are my new bonded" he said though this time outloud. "The only thing is your acceptance and I belong to you and you to me" he said. "I await your decision" and with that he slowly backed away leaving her alone.

Dear Miss Athari,

My late master Greigor St. Maccalin Lucian Has passed. It is in his will that you and few others have been given the rare opportunity to be graced with the ownership and bond with his Azrein Alistair McArtur Lucian. Of coarse only Alistair may decide his new master to be. Please have a timely arrival or you may miss your chance.

~sincerely Maria Lucian

Athari the Dark One stared at the letter partly in shock and partly because of all the fancy lettering of the damn thing. The courier had left the note on her front door this morning it seemed and Athari had been mingling about it all day. It was intriguing to say the least that a woman from the jungles could ever receive such a formal invitation. And to bond with an Azrein? Her head tilted a little in thought of the pull that she had experienced when she became bonded to her Nailiah. This wasn't the same pull, but maybe some bondings were different. Athari wouldn't be the one to judge or to get upset. If she were to be chosen for an Azrein to get a home, then why shouldn't she? It was only the male's right to choose who his master was anyway. The female scratched the top of her head gently before looking over to Nailiah who stood waiting and ready for the call. Athari shrugged and asked, "You won't get jealous will you dear heart?" The mare gave a grunt glaring at her human all the while as the two-legger jumped on the white mare's back. "Please. I was here first." Nailiah joked with her chosen as they started on their journey. The white mare sped across the lands like nothing ever seen, a blur of white, red, and brown.

Arriving at the castle was...startling. Athari had never seen the likes of this before save for in books she picked up from the library. Though she had seen castles much like King Azreth's, this one had a different sort of flair about it. Strange all the while...Her attention was snapped from her as Nailiah came to a halt in front of the gates. "I will wait out here for your return. We shall go home in pairs or in three. Either way, we will go home." The two embraced for a moment taking in each other as Nai gave her human courage before Athari left her friend to face the castle and its inhabitants alone. Her green eyes took in the surroundings as she crossed the first archway and over the stone and cobble bridge to get to the second archway and finally the door. It was large, wooden, and slightly intimidating with strange Azrein carvings all over the arches and on the knockers. Athari knocked three times before there came a creaking and the door opened.

A tiny, old woman peaked out to get a look at the wild girl. Athari was dressed normally: tanned deerhide around her bust and tied at the back with no straps, and a loincloth that ended at her mid-thigh at the front and below the bend in her knees at the back. As usual, she was barefoot with her head pulled up and tied back save for a few bangs that usually hung around her face. Jewelry and feathers adorned the savage looking female even as kind eyes stared at the old woman in front of her. "Hello. I received this invitation." Athari spoke calmly and plainly handing the piece of paper to the old woman who held it gingerly and yet scrutinized the hell out of it with her fading vision. With a small cough, she handed the paper back to Athari. "Come then, child. I will take you to Missus Maria."

The walk was...strange to say the least. The corridor was extremely long and all along the sides were portraits of man, azrein, and beast along with busts and statues. It appeared to be a long line of owners and their bonded owning this estate. Athari was so entranced by the pictures and statues that she almost ran into the old maid when she stopped. "Keep straight. You will hit the courtyard." With that, she left Athari to continue the journey on her own. The warrior took a deep breath as she strode along, muscles quivering with excitement and a bit of nervousness. Athari pushed open the doors as a bright light filled the hallway. She flinched a moment letting her eyes adjust to the lighting of the courtyard. It seemed to trap the sun it was so bright! She gently shut the door behind her and continued forward looking at all the different flora that adorned the circular space. It was huge, looked like a field with cobbled walk ways. It didn't take long for Athari to notice the gathered crowd of people, nor for them to notice her. She strode confidently toward the group of mostly men with a few women and stood among them proud. All of them were dressed in the finest fabrics of their respected areas. Most looked to be distinguished businessmen while others to be simply wealthy because of fortunate birthrights. The women all wore fine laces and dresses that made them look more like fat turkey peacocks than actual women. If only they knew what she went through as a child. Some sneered and murmured words such as savage and unclean while others simply gawked with a surprised and interest in the exotic looking wild woman of the amazons. The few females that were there either stuck up their noses to ignore or even whispered loud enough for Athari to hear. She continued to ignore however as they all waited patiently, with Athari thinking and wondering about who was this Lucius family and why were they interested in her?

Everyone suddenly quieted as a gorgeous woman stepped out dressed in the finest gold and black silk dress that any of them had ever seen as it hugged her luscious frame. She wore a small black hat with a small veil to cover some of her upper face and black gloves with gold trimmings and designs to match her glorious flora gown. Touching those gloved hands was a very regal looking azrein with...bat wings? His appearance was both haunting and beautiful at the same time. Some men felt obligated to bow while others stood as dumb as when they first met Athari. The women all curtsied still muttering under their breath. Only Athari stood still unaware of how to act or what to do. The duo came closer and stopped short of the gathered group.

There was an uncomfortable silence for a while before the woman spoke, "I am Maria Lucian, the granddaughter of the late Greigor St. Maccalin Lucian. You all have been called here in order to give Alistair McArtur Lucian a possible chosen and a home. But I wonder. Why did you all heed this letter? Do any of you even know Greigor?"

A man spoke up stating that he was his accountant. A woman said she had been his business adviser. Another man stated that they were friends who simply played cards together and spoke of politics. Everyone had an answer save for Athari. She looked toward Maria as they made eye contact answering truthfully, "My lady Maria, I can only tell you that I received the letter. I do not know the late Gregior, but I choose to heed the call because I felt in my heart that it was right. And honestly, I want to know why I was sent one.." It was then that many of the listeners grew quiet waiting for the same answer sneering and whispering all the while. Maria stayed silent for a time before she started to giggle, "Athari, dear Athari. You do not remember a man who came to visit your tribe? Then again you were quite young and ill-treated. And yet you had a spark about you. We even played together. Grandfather Greigor often called you his favorite of the wild children. He made sure to keep tabs on you, and when you were lost he felt saddened. But when one of the boys from the market saw you here, with the white mare Nailiah, he was overjoyed. He wanted to see you, but fate took his hand..." Maria was quiet again before answering, "You were called here because of your love and affection for Nailiah as well as the others you keep at your ranch. We just want the same for Alistair.

"And with that ladies and gentlemen, I will allow Alistair to mingle among you."
Maria took her hand off the stallion who then went forward investigating the humans in his own little way.

At first, the women immediately shied away scared by his leathery wings and frightful markings. No way he would make any sort of good pet at all! Those ladies were immediately dismissed by Maria who sent for staff to take them from the grounds. Some of the men marveled at the interesting beauty of the stallion wondering how much they would make for advertising for him. Those men were also sent away. A few wondered how he would do as a business partner for azrein were known for their intelligence. The horse mingled with them all the while keeping his conversations short, focused, and different all at the same time.

Finally, he came to Athari. Before she could say anything, Alistair gave a grunt. "You have...a strange feral quality. It...intrigues and yet scares me at the same time. Did you really grow up in the jungles?" Athari blinked and gave a nod. "Well...yes of course. I have been there all my life until I left to find Nailiah, my bonded." He gave a small nod. "Ahh I see. You left because you felt a pull and you didn't know why? That...that was what it was like when I met Greigor. I was a foal back then and not even one of the generations that his family bred so selectively. He was a teenager and took me in, demanding that I be part of the family. Greigor cleaned me up, dressed me finely, and even gave me his name. I am indebted to him..." Alistair trialed off until Athari reached up and scratched his ear and neck. No one had dare touch the horse since his late master had died, and here this warrior woman gave it not second thought. "It is like that if you were to lose someone you loved. If I ever lost Nailiah, I don't know what I'd do. There's just this uncanny connection between the soul of the man and the soul of the azrein and you can't take that away. No one can. Greigor must have been a fine man to have you." With that, Athari hugged the stallion tightly which Alistair simply felt shocked. He returned the affection wrapping his wings around the human female before looking over to Maria as he fought the tears welling in his eyes.

Maria looked on to Alistair and Athari as if the others didn't exist. They too stared with a strange and fantastical vision of beast and human sharing some sort of connection. Maria simply gave a smile looking over to the staff awaiting. "...I think Alistair has found a home..." There was a smile as she looked back to the embracing pair. Maria knew that there would be something uncanny about Athari. She was just glad that she was right.

Maria was glad that Grandfather was right.

Kayla read over the letter again and wondered who this mysterious Baron Christe was. She had never met him, nor could she place the name. She closed her eyes and sent a questioning tendril of thought to her Bonded, Veronika. "V? Did you get all that? What do you think?" Unsurprisingly, Veronika appeared, nuzzling Kayla, and nibbled at the strange letter. "I dunno Kay.. it seems kind of suspicious if you ask me... but I think that if there is an Azrien in need, we should go check it out and make sure at the very least that he is safe. And honestly, I don't like that whole "master" bit..." Kayla nodded in agreement. "Yeah, me either... ok then, let me let mama know where we're going and we can head out. I think it'll take us a few days to get there anyways."

A few days later saw them at the gate of a large Manor. Kayla snorted. "Huh. Castle Dorne indeed. The only castle in the kingdom belongs to the King. Still, it's quite impressive." Veronika chuckled wryly and they slowly approached the gate, only to be stopped by a guard. Kayla presented him with her letter, to which he nodded and indicated that they should go up towards the stables.

Halfway up the path, a groom hurried down to meet them, wringing his hands. "Oh no.. no, no no. This won't do! This won't do at all!" he cried. Kayla looked at him curiously. "Whatever is the matter sir? I'm Kayla.. I recieved this letter from your late Master..." The groom cut her off. "yes, yes.. I know who you are. But why did you bring that with you?" he pointed to Veronika, who snorted and glared at him in return. Kayla looked confused and adressed the sticken man. "What do you mean? This is my friend, Veronika." He waved his hands frantically and said, "Well I didn't expect anyone to already have an azrien.. I mean, how can you come here for him when you already have one.. no need to be greedy..." Kayla glared at the small man. "Look buddy, I don't know what's going on here. but I didn't come to claim another "pet" as you seem to think. Veronika is my friend and partner. That's what it is to be bonded. There is no "Master" here. I came to make sure that this azrien you're keeping isn't going to be bullied around and taken somewhere where he will be harmed. Got it?" She pushed past him and continued up the path, Veronika trailing behind her.

Upon arriving at the stables, she and Veronika went around the side to a large paddock, where there seemed to be a lot of noise. There was a group of several men, ranging from around her age, to twenty or thirty years older. From what conversation she could overhear, she guessed that none of them had ever been bonded before and were here to gain a possesion, not a friend. Her blood boiled, and she walked over to the cluster of men. "Idiots! What exactly do you think you are here for? A horse fair? These creatures aren't here to be your slave, servant, or pet! They're intelligent beings and should be treated with respect! Shame on all of you for thinking otherwise!" Too busy berating the men, she didn't notice the handsome winged Azrien approach her from behind. The men grew quiet all of a sudden and she sensed a presence behind her which did not feel like Veronika.. who she faintly felt chuckling in the back of her mind. The stallion whuffed her hair and lightly nudged her in the back. Slowly, she turned around to see him, and was taken aback by the sight of him. He definitely looked well taken care of, that was for sure. If he has been Baron Christe's "pet", at least he didn't look neglected or abused. The stallion bowed to her and looked right into her green eyes with his aqua ones. She felt him in her head, chuckling softly. "You are wise for one so young... I am Nicolas d'Loncre.. and I Choose you."
