This post is reusable so if, you fail, feel free to come back again tomorrow to give it another try!
______________________________________________________

You find yourself standing in a precisely manicured field, pristine green grass stretching out in front of you for what seems like miles. A gaggle of large flightless birds stand in the shape of a horseshoe, a few of them already engaged by other Amityville students. A horseman of Conquest approaches you, her deep olive hair serving to help camouflage her in the surrounding foliage.

"Greetings. You may call me Rucha. Today you will be working with the adara." She sweeps an arm toward the birds, her long sleeves trailing through the grass at her feet. "On the whole, members of this species have a lot in common with humans as far as temperament and intelligence are concerned, so you should have no trouble getting them to tolerate you." She frowns and looks you up and down. "In theory." Rucha moves to one side, allowing you to step past her.

"Take this," She hands you a list of instructions. "Choose a bird, and make an effort to earn its trust."

Instruction One
First, you must bow to the adara to show it you mean no harm. Try to at least act sincere.

Roll 1d4.
1: Your bow is suitably impressive. The adara inclines its head and drops a feather. Perhaps it will be of some use later.

2: The bird screams in terror and pushes you to the ground before running away. You fail.

3: You don't make proper eye contact at first, but soon your adara is nuzzling up to you anyway. It seems you have a natural affinity for dealing with the beasts. A future as a DETH representative might be in the cards. You also obtain one feather.

4: You bow, but it's kind of a weak attempt. Still, your bird responds. It doesn't seem terribly enthusiastic about the whole situation though. You pass.

Instruction Two
Next you should offer the adara a refreshing drink of water or a salted cracker.

Roll 1d6.
1: The adara nibbles at your cracker, then turns away and starts to graze on the leaves near its feet. You pass, but not by much.

2: After you've fed your bird its snack, the adara puffs up and begins to gag. You've failed the challenge, but you do obtain a feather as a result of its misery!

3: Your adara drinks its water daintily, then allows you to pet it. You pass and you get a feather!

4: Sadly, after your bird eats your cracker, it quickly moves on to the next student, letting them pet it and collect one of its feathers. The two timer! You pass. Eventually your adara wanders back.

5: The adara in front of you ignores your cracker, but another animal wanders over to eat it instead, giving you one of its feathers in thanks! You pass.

6: You drop your water and crackers, watching in dismay as a passing bird tramples them. You fail.

Instruction Three
Ask the adara something about itself, listening attentively when it answers, even though you can't understand a word of its reply.

Roll 1d6.
1: You ask the bird to tell you where it was born and it responds with a happy trill and a long, drawn out bird story. After a while, you begin to get bored. The adara stops mid-chirp, gets up, and waddles away. You fail.

2: The adara looks on in confusion and dismay as you try to stutter out an interesting question. You fail.

3: Your bird is pleased by your question. It sits down and shares a tweety tale of intrigue that you manage to remain bright-eyed and alert for. You pass.

4: Your question frightens the adara and it leaves your vicinity with a shiver. Its shaking causes one of its feathers to fall nearby. You fail.

5: In an effort to seem like you care, you ask your adara a very personal question that it refuses to answer. You fail.

6: You've coincidentally hit on your adara's favorite topic of all time, and even if you can't understand what it's saying, it's still pretty entertaining. You listen as attentively as you can, and are awarded with a feather for your trouble. You pass.

Instruction Four
Lastly, tell the adara a secret. These animals love to think they're up on the latest gossip.

Roll 1d4.
1, 2: Your secret is a sad, boring one that nobody cares about. You fail.

3: The adara listens, rapt, as you tell it a little-known tale of intrigue and madness. When you're done, it drops a feather at your feet. You pass.

4: Everybody knows that secret! The adara shakes its head, accidentally dislodging a feather for you to keep. You fail.

Q: What happens if I fail?
You stop. You can try again tomorrow or the next, but once you fail you're done.

Ciel approached the gleaming white bird carefully. It towered over her, it's back coming up to her shoulder. They contrasted each other like day and night.Short, chubby Ciel with her messy dark hair and rumpled clothes was like the shadow of the graceful, tall, elegant creature before her.

The bird bent down as if about to pick up a pebble with it's beak, then it's motion changed. It's neck straightened, back arching smoothly as it spread it wings just a little, bending them smoothly behind them.

Ceil blinked, then mimicked the motion herself. Her grace seemed strange coming from such an ungainly creature. The bird bent at the neck, plucking a feather from it's wing before settling back into standing position.

Ciel smiled, producing a cracker from a velvet pouch. Still bowed low, she held up the offering before the bird.

Daintily, it took the cracker from her hands, munching it down in a single bite. Before Ciel could offer water, however, a strange and horrible sound came from the bird. It was a mix of guttural wrenching and nasal, stifled chirping. The Adara was choking!

Ciel was about to materialize her glove to save the bird, when she remembered the rule against using FEAR abilities. Was the innocent creature about to die because of a silly rule?

Ciel looked on in terror, pacing around the suffering adara, looking for something, anything, she could do to help it. She could see nothing. Just as it seemed the bird was going to die, a little sliver of cracker dribbled out of it's beak. It's breathing was wheezy, but the adara was breathing again.

Once the adara could breathe again, Ciel stepped back and smiled nervously. She bowed, hoping the bird would accept her apology. The adara glared coldly at Ciel, still breathing heavily from the ordeal. It plucked a feather from it's other wing, dropping it out of politeness only, then strutted away in a huff.

Ceil had failed, despite all her efforts. She picked up the two feathers and hung her head in shame.

As Ceil sat there gloomily, she felt a nudging against her shoulder. She looked up to see another adara, rubbing it's head against her shoulder. Now that the bird had her attention, it stepped back and bowed down low like the one before it had done.

Ciel tried to bow, but her mind was not on the action but the her previous failure, so it was not nearly as graceful as before. The adara tilted it's head towards Ciel, looking at her from near the ground, then straightened it's body again.

Ciel stayed bowed low, presenting the cracker to the adara before her. The adara bent down at the neck, nibbling at the cracker until it was all gone. As it finished eating another student brushed by, their flowing clothes touching Ciel and the Adara.

The Adara straightened it's body and nudged the passing student. Ciel look on in shock as the adara was petted and played with by the other student. The adara even gave them a feather!

Ciel straightened herself and put a hand on her hip. "Hey...." she said.

The Adara wheeled back around to her.

"Why did you wander off like that? I mean, I'm supposed to be learning etiquette from you, but isn't it poor etiquette to ignore your guest for someone else, then to shower the other person with gifts?"

Ciel was trying to be polite as she asked, but a little anger was creeping into her voice like a black hiss, "I am trying to be good to you. I am trying to help. They did nothing but rudely walk too close and brush us with clothes, and they got presents! What? Do you want me to do that to you? C'mon."

The adara looked at her, blinked a few times, then made a whistle-hiss noise. Afterward, it walked away to curl up in a soft patch of grass and take a nap.

"Lazy bird.", Ciel muttered. She had failed, again.

Ciel was annoyed, but had not lost her resolve. After looking around herself fro a few moments, she found an adara that was sitting by itself away from the other students. She smiled as she approached the adara, hoping that there would be no repeats of last time.

The adara stood up to meet her and bowed low, fanning it's tail feathers as it did so. Ceil returned the same, graceful motion, even moving her arms back as the adara had shown her. The adara chirrupped, taking a feather from it's breast, laying it at Ceil's feet.

Ceil smiled, placing the feather in her hair.

Ciel straightened herself, reaching for a small flask off her hip. She poured a glass of water for the adara, holding it before the bird in the center of her open, cupped hands.

The Adara chirped appreciatively, then happily drank the water. once done, it ruffled it's chest feathers again, offering it to Ciel from it's beak. Ciel smiled and approached the adara to take the feather, only to find the bird nuzzling her.

Ciel smiled and petted the great bird's soft feathers as the adara half closed it's eyes in enjoyment.

"Where did you come from?" Ciel asked as she stroked the great, beautiful bird.

The adara nuzzled into Ciel's side and began to chirrup. At first Ciel didn't mind listening to the unending whistles, chirp, and chirrs that made up the bird's song, but the song began to make her sleepy. Somehow, it felt like a lullaby. Ciel fell asleep curled up to warm feathers and soft sounds.

When she woke up, the adara was gone. She had failed, again.
