Environmental Studies

You're sure you've followed the directions you were given, but upon reaching the spot where the training field you're looking for is supposed to be, you see and feel nothing but blinding sunlight and intense heat.

Just as you're about to turn around and head back to the sickly-looking creature who directed you to this barren spot in the first place, a section of the desert seems to shift as a pale young clan member pushes a sandy tarp out of his way.  He stands up straight in front of you, his skeletal hands brushing at the front of his robes.

"Welcome!" he says, managing to squeeze more reckless enthusiasm from that one word than most members of the clan of Famine probably have in all their years of speaking.  He leads you down into the hole the tarp was covering. The space inside is clean and cool. "You may call me Ktur, fledgling.  Today we'll be working with some of... well... these things!"  He gestures at six boxes, identical in size, but with wildly different contents.  Each resembles a human child's diorama, only slightly larger and with considerably more movement inside.  Oh, and they're also entirely made of glass. And almost all closed up.  Maybe they don't look much like dioramas at all.

Ktur pushes one toward you. "Here, this one seems to suit."

Quote:
Determine which miniature environment Ktur has chosen for you.

Roll 1d6.
1: The box Ktur directed you toward looks a lot like the surroundings outside: bleak, bright, and sandy.  You will be working with a desert environment.

2: You can barely make out a tiny mountain and a stand of snow-topped pine trees through the mess of whirling snow.  You will be working with an arctic environment.

3: A heavy mist hangs low in this box, but the treetops that blanket its highest points are a bright cheerful green under the sun.  You will be working with a rainforest environment.

4: Your box seems almost boring compared to some of the others left on the table.  Inside stretches a large field covered with tall grasses that wave in the breeze.  You will be working with a prairie environment.

5: You've seen fish tanks?  Well, Ktur hopes you like this one.  You will be working with an underwater environment.

6: Woo!  You're on fiah!  Or at least your box is.  You will be working with a volcanic environment.

"Now," the horseman continues, "I've been doing a lot of research on these, and boy, do I mean a lot. What we're trying to have happen here is a whole... growing... situation, but some of these places just don't seem to like plants and animals very much, or at least the kinds anyone can live on." He looks at you with a measure of ominous sincerity, the bangles in his hair tinkling merrily in opposition to his demeanor.  "Go forth! Experiment! Shine lights on it, throw some FEAR in there, shake it, whatever you think will get things to grow." One of his wings juts out at random, almost knocking a nearby potion off of the table.

Quote:
Each environment has 30 HP, except for the prairie which has 40. Roll 1d12 and follow the prompt corresponding to your roll.  Continue rolling until you have either obtained three Horseman Points or your environment runs out of HP.

1: FIRE! Something catches fire inside your diorama. Try channeling a little bit of FEAR in there. It might help. Or maybe not. You lose 5 HP in desert and rainforest environments, 10 HP on the prairie, and none underwater, in the arctic, or on the volcano.

2: Whatever you tried this time, nothing happens. Ktur looks at you as if you're close to one of the most worthless things he's ever seen. Then he goes back to picking at his toenails with a grungy stick.

3: There's too much water! You lose 5 HP in the volcano and arctic, 2 HP in the rainforest and prairie, and none in the underwater and desert environments.

4: What's that? Whatever you just did caused a tiny, colorful flower to sprout in your environment. The landscape is so small you can barely see it, but Ktur seems impressed. You earn one Horsemen Point.

5: Did you fall asleep? It sure seems that way for all the good you're doing. Luckily, nothing happens.

6: A swarm of vicious looking bugs appear out of nowhere and burrow into the ground, ruining any progress you have made and leaving a bunch of giant holes in their wake. You lose 15 HP.

7: If you are working with the underwater environment, suddenly your whole diorama goes black. When the water clears, all the tiny plants and animals are gone. You lose 5 HP. If you are not working with an underwater diorama, nothing happens.

8: In a moment of frustration, you shake, kick, yell at, or even look at your environment wrong. You lose 5 HP.

9: You have no idea what you did wrong, but your environment is suddenly looking worse for wear. You lose 3 HP.

10: A tiny animal scrambles into view, then disappears back into hiding. Ktur deems the appearance of the beast a wild success! You earn one Horsemen Point.

11: Ktur approaches you and tries to assist. His attempts do absolutely nothing. Maybe that's why he asked you to help in the first place.

12: A pack of what look like little gnomes appear in your diorama. They light a tiny bonfire (yes, even underwater) and generally mess up the joint. The desert, volcano, arctic and underwater environments lose 2 HP, the prairie loses 10, and the rainforest is unaffected.

Mmmm.... Candlejack! Was that a training field at all? Shenny felt a flash back from famine trials in Human's worlds, no wonder why Famine clan has chosen such an uncomfortable landscape back there. It should have reminded them of home.

Her dreams of a fresh air were crushed the very moment Shenny reached the surface. The air was arid, and quite hard to breath, plus, it was quite hot. For a moment Shenny felt happy she had a habit of wearing very light clothes. Sunlight wasn't that disgusting, as it was back in Human's world, but still it wasn't nice at all. Well, that was pretty much environmental studies she was looking for, quite an experience.

Shenny noticed a Famine youngling, who was moving in her direction.

"Ktur, yeah? Nice to meet you, I'm Shenny".

Oh Jack, it turned out to be more interesting than she thought. Mini-environments were cute, and nice, for a moment Shenny hesitated on asking Ktur, if she can take one as a souvenir, but then she remembered Arel's introduction lecture in an Assembley, and decided it might not be really appropriate. To tell the truth, she was a bit upset with it.

Oh well, a prairie! Wonderful. Shenny probably got the most boring environment of them all. Is wasn't as deserted as the reality around her, but something about prairie pretty much resembled the world of Famine clan. A lack of... anything probably?

Shenny moved closer to the box preparing to work on it.

Wow, a little beast was too fast for Shenny's eyes, she didn't even have a good chance to examine its shapes. Anyway, Ktur said it's a success, though Shenny wasn't sure what exactly did she do. Perhaps, the creature was just curious on what's going on.

Disaster! Shenny thought that adding a bit of water might hurry up some growing, at least plants... The plan was good. Except it didn't work. Probably she just have put too much fear into this, and the prairie was drowning in floods now. Mmmm... we need to do something about that water...

...and shaking the box probably wasn't the best solution here. Ktur looked at Shenny suspiciously. Her freshly built image of a person-who's-knowing-what-to-do was fading away rapidly.

Shenny tried to calm herself and watch the environment attentively. What would be the right thing to do here?..

And disaster again! Shenny tried to put a very bit of her fear into diorama to evaporate the water, but looks like she put too much again. Water did indeed evaporated, but now the prairie caught on fire, an was literally burning... Shenny wondered for a moment, what could possibly be such a good fuel there.

Okay, ghoul, relax.. You just have to be more careful.

Perhaps, yelling at the environment wasn't a good idea either, it appears that the little world inside was perfect in sensing emotions. Shenny concentrated and tried to catch the most peaceful and loving mood she could imagine.

And it worked! The fire stopped, little prairie got back to normal, and a curious little animal was curiously watching Shenny from the high grass again, and Ktur stared at Shenny in an excitement.

Bloody Mary, that was the trick. Perhaps, the whole idea of affecting the diorama with fear was wrong, and from the start she should rather try emotions instead.

Shenny concentrated not to loose the cheerful feeling.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 02, 2012 11:40 pm

Yes! Shenny realized she managed to get the right track. It seems that her success with dousing the fire and attracting an animal made her happy enough to affect the diorama. For a moment Shenny was gazing at a very, very, very tiny, but absolutely real flower sprouted in the centre of the prairie. It was so fragile and innocent, Shenny caught herself at trying to hold her breath being afraid it can damage the petals. It was real, the tiny flower in a middle of the prairie looked like a tiny vivid heart of this environment.

Shenny turned to Ktur with a victorious look on her face, a little fellow seemed to be really impressed. She nodded to him trying hard to act cool, and walked away feeling very satisfied.

It was early, a plenty of time before classes, and since Shenny anyway felt sleepless, she thought it might be a nice idea to visit Ktur and his environmental studies again. She was sort of proud her yesterday success, but was honest enough to realize it was a pure newbie luck. To actually learn how to deal with the environment, to learn how to affect it with her own emotions, she still needed a lot of practising.

Ktur recognized the ghoul, but it was almost impossible to say, if he was happy to see her / sympathised with her. Shenny made her way to the dioramas, and picked the last box, and OH! That was hot! Shenny made a quick looks inside: the entire surface with covered with ashes and magma. Mmm... looks like she's dealing with a Volcano today.

Shenny tried to recollect in her memory what exactly was she doing yesterday. As far as she understood, emotions were the key to affect environment, a feeling of happiness, success, perfection.. Too bad she was gone mental being affected by those happiness crops, it would probably be a good idea to try the luck with that fabulous feeling. Shenny tried to remember in very details how exactly did she feel, but... nothing actually happened to the diorama.

Okay... it wasn't enough. Well then, Shenny tried to meditate. Very soon she felt very peaceful... silence and stillness were floating around her, floating in her... Shenny felt herself as a tiny part of a huge world, hew own FEAR essence being just a number of Fear particles coincidentally combined together to form her body...

"Khm!" Ktur's hem woke her up. Jack! Did she actually fell asleep? Perfect timing, right. Diorama was still unaffected.

Perhaps, it wasn't really a decent idea to come here having no sleep, every attempt to concentrate on happy emotions would rather lead her to sleep. Shenny realized she needed something different.. what could it be?.. Aha, she can try and concentrate on something active, like a joyful spirit of fighting! Shenny started to sing a war song for herself, and WOAH! That was too much. A huge hail hit her volcano, water everywhere inside the diorama. Why didn't she manage to make this yesterday, it would fit prairie so well!

That thought was a mistake! It was too late when Shenny realized she was actually yelling at the diorama, and the volcano didn't get it right: fire was almost extinguished, the surface was covered with ashes instead of playful lava.
