Suli'leksi stared at the walls around him, taking in every feature of the stone. Each shift in the ancient sands that had built it up told a story, ancient histories about ages long passed. Had this part of the world once been lush with greenery, or covered in a river, a lake, a sea? Only the rocks knew, and maybe the sands. But then, how far had the sands come? He knew there were huge dunes far to the north, and he'd heard recently of deserts far to the west and south. He scooped some sand under his paws up, watching the tiny grains filter through. After a moment, he let out a sigh, before heading to the archives. He'd been up and about long enough, he figured - It was time to do something with his time, and he intended to keep the history of the Hongshan going. Of course, when he spotted Fia, he wondered for a moment if that angry doctor lioness was doing double duties... That'd explain things... But then he realized the eyes were in the wrong places, and it occurred to him that this was the doctor's twin. He decided to approach with caution anyway. "Ehuse me... You are... Fia, yes?" After a few days away from lions speaking the common southern language... Suli had already begun to have a challenge of a time with it. Though biting one's tongue never helped, and his sore muscle made it hard to talk too clearly. Some consonances were getting muddled.

He would find Fia in a foul mood. Fouler than normal anyway. And that would be clear when she whipped her head around and narrowed her eyes dangerously at him. For a long moment she scrutinised him as if trying to work out exactly what he was made of. Then, with an graceless snort, she answered: "Yes. That's me. What do you want?"
Impatient, she turned her back to him again and reached up to drag a paw across one of the stones, smudging the pale marks of a drawing that had once been there. She'd been neglecting her duties recently for something of a more Firekin nature. In the name of her dead nephew she had taken to learning the art of war. Her tail thrashed, sweeping up a sheath of sand that settled a few seconds later.
Done wiping at the image she took a few steps back to look. There was still a trace of the original left but she was pretty sure with some good strong colour that it would not be visible when the updated image was placed on top. Nodding thoughtfully she pinned back both her ears and exhaled deeply, her sides sinking.
She could be difficult, this one. And Suli'leksi was just about to discover that for himself.

Suli hesitated a moment, watching the dark lioness. Her brashness, though he'd somewhat expected it after her sister, still surprised him. Were ALL Firekin like this? It'd been all he'd encountered beyond Singh and Kiran. But then, Kiran was young, and Singh had said he came from... Elsewhere. There was no elaboration from the white lion. Finally, the pie-faced lion swallowed. "I am here... For history." He took a few steps closer. "I am told... See Fia for to be historian." He looked around, motioning with a paw. "Hongshan history should not be forhoten." He paused, making faces as he stuck his tongue out a few times, trying to get it to behave. "ForGOten... I am sorry, I bit my tongue, it is... Not working well right now."
He paused again, going back to looking at the walls. After a moment, he turned back to Fia. "You did all this..?" It was absolutely amazing! He stepped a bit closer to a wall, carefully looking it over but not touching it. He had no idea what the marks were made with, and didn't want to accidentally smudge one. As his gaze followed the wall, it soon came to the mark she'd just made. He wouldn't ask about that one, not yet. It didn't seem the right time.

Suli would soon discover that Firekin came in all different varieties. Perhaps another day might have seen Fia in a better mood but, unfortunately, he'd not caught at her best. Nevertheless, his accent seemed to catch her attention and she finally turned back to look at him, her eyes a little less narrowed than before.
"For history." She repeated. It wasn't a question.
She looked back at the stones at his comment and gave a shrugging motion with her shoulders. "Some. Most. Not all. There are others." Such as her teacher, Mzaa, and some of those she preferred to call 'students'. Fia was just a little OCD when it came to the history stones and she was her own worst critic (as well as everyone else's). She ran a tight ship. "I take it you want to become one of the 'others' and start recording, too?"
She had to admit, Hongshan history did have her curious. She had not had much time to spend with that little group and she sensed that they were a rather different people from the Firekin despite their strength of character. Thankfully, though Fia could be gruff and unwelcoming at the best of time, she was one of the Firekin who did in fact want the Hongshan to be a part of their group. "What's your name, Northerner?" She asked.

The gold-marked male nodded, eyes starting to dance. "Yes, for history! I wish to record the Hongshan history, and then help record where it merges with Firekin history!" He looked again at the walls, then pointed to a spot. "Like here, our prides become one!" His attention suddenly changed at a new question and he looked back to Fia. "I am Suli'leksi. I was a lion remembering pride's history before..." He hesitated, ears folding back. "Before... Nergui..." It had been a worth-while pursuit for him, at least, since he wasn't much of a fighter. THAT honor went to his brother, Serkan, the more robust brother between them. Not that their parents had minded - They were proud of Serkan's strength, yes, but they were also very proud of Suli's ability to remember minute details. He wanted to share this with the Firekin.

She gave a short nod and waved it off. Fia wasn't good with dealing with the emotional stuff and she wasn't sure what she would do if he started getting upset talking about it. His very hesitation had her stomach turning with anxiety. Fia didn't do good with comfort. If he wanted a shoulder to lean on and a compassionate ear, then she certainly wasn't the one to be doing so.
"I will permit that. Hongshan history poses an important lesson to the Firekin, too. Here, here, there's a blank stone down here where you an start recording the events that occurred before the invasion." She didn't pause. "And then you may move onto the Firekin stones once you reach present day."
She turned to look at him, her eyes lit with curiosity. "What sort of things were you hoping to record?"
Great titles? Achievements? Deaths?
She recalled Roho's story of the founding of the Hongshan back during their attempted day of culture and gave a light sniff.

"Oh, of course!" He sat down with the stones, starting to get to work, dark eyes alight with joy. He'd be sharing their history with someone! It made him giddy to find somebody of a like mind about it, about the importance of it. "I think I will record..." He paused, scratching his chin. "All of it." He looked over at her, eyes still dancing. "It may not be as long as Firekin history, but it is worth telling, of preserving." He turned back to his work, making marks here and there. "You have been told of Hongshan, yes? Young pride of the... Red Mountain." Ah, the red mountain... Again a point his brother and he differed. Serkan as red as the mountain, and Suli like the mountain's shadow. They'd found it worked perfectly for them.

"There is nothing too small that it should not be recorded." Fia corrected with a huff, turning back to her own work for a moment. "I have heard some stories." She continued, concentrating on her work. "But not all. Certainly not all. I recall the story of the Hongshan's birth well enough. The warrior Roho told me of that."
It sounded as if they had had a proud king, once. One who was kind but strong and with great vision. Sad to think of the fate that befell him and his people. "I would like to hear more. They should be remembered. You are our people now and later, your ancestors will want to know where they hailed from just as mine will."
She turned to gaze at him, her eyes sharp with warning. "But all you record must be accurate. I want no exaggerated glories upon this stone. Truth is what we want. Only truths. Who wants to recall a fake past? If you do not know it you should not record it, not unless you know someone still living who can clarify."
And then she gestured to her own artwork and to that of her teacher's, Karana'mzaana. "Take heed of the style, too. Simple. Not too detailed. Detailed work will take too long to touch up again if the sand blasts the image away. A simple work is easier to make bold again."

Suli nodded, carefully working. "Roho has good memory... If crippled, could be good historian." She certainly remembered some things he didn't. He contemplated a moment, then started with the commonly known history of the pride's founding.
He spared a glance at the lioness, dark eyes glinting just a bit. "I do not repeat exaggerations, unless to poke bit of fun at lions who first tell exaggerated stories." If they were going to lie, they were just ASKING others to mock them.
The pie-faced lion looked at what Fia'd already done, noting the style. He looked at his own work, then made careful adjustments so it matched. As he finished the mountain the pride had named themselves for, he used part of his paw to make a sudden addition - A sun rising over the peak.
"Where I am unsure of piece of history, I will leave space to add after asking around." It was a good plan, and as far as he figured, it'd work. Put down what he knew, and then ask others from the Hongshan if they knew the missing pieces.

"Hongshan seem to have a greater appreciation for stories and history than my own people." Fia admonished wryly, glad that the lion seemed to be a keeper of truths. She glanced over his shoulder to see what he was working on and smiled to see the mountain - its peak thrust into the belly of the rising sun.
"That sounds like a fair plan." She continued, turning back to her work. "I think we might get on rather well, if I do say so myself."
Sometimes it was nice to have a colleague. On occasion. The job could get lonely and maybe - just maybe - it might be nice to have someone to talk to. Fia glanced at Suli again, gave a slight nod and then allowed a smile to twitch at the corner of her mouth. She did rather like Hongshan.
