Months had fled by and the hope of rescue was fading. Against herself, she felt herself becoming more complacent. All she had to do was lure him into a sense of security, but it wasn't working. Even though he wasn't holding her exactly, she couldn't leave. There was no way out without knowing the area. If she went out there, she'd die or get captured again. Things might be worse if she was.
She pushed back her hair, and tried to think of what to do. She knew Lutherian wouldn't give up on her--she knew he would come to find her. Everything was going to be okay, she just had to wait a little longer. Just a little longer...
She watched as Cereus came in, and sauntered over to him her eyes cast down demurely. "How goes your day?" She kept the acidic bite out of her voice.

The stallion had been out checking and re-setting his traps for the day. So far he hadn't had much luck catching anything other than a gator or two. Perhaps one of these days he might catch something a little more entertaining. After all, he had managed to at least catch Ashe and Akiko had simply wandered right into his cave willingly. Speaking of which, the stallion stopped off to grab a few of the herbs that the little mare enjoyed so much. Thankfully she had never seemed to realize that those particular herbs were causing her memory issues. As long as he kept her eating them, she was easy enough to keep to himself. Perhaps one day he would let her go when he had grown weary of the mare. For now however, he intended to keep both of his captive.
Upon entering his cave, the stallion found himself being greeted by Ashe. She had certainly been his most peculiar captive thus far. She had made no attempts to escape, hadn't put up much of a fight, and seemed to be reasonably well mannered. Cereus found her to be quite puzzling. "Just picked up some more herbs for Akiko. That's about it. Have you seen her around?" He asked casually, wondering if he ought to start slipping a few of these herbs to Ashe as well. This certainly wasn't the first time that the thought had crossed his mind. However, he had a feeling that if she decided to start eating these too she might start putting pieces together, leading to conclusions that Cereus didn't like her to know. For the moment, she was the perfect prisoner. No need to give her any ammunition against him.

Ashe shook out her hair and studied him carefully. "She's not been too keen on company today. It's been kind of lonely." Maybe he would take her out of the cave some. "Did you bring me food?" She wondered absently. He always bring her food in the evening. She could see the sun glinting off the walls of the cave, reflecting into every recess like the whole place was on fire sometimes.
Her mind flitted back to the present, "Do you suppose...I could go out sometime? I mean, am I allowed to go a little ways to see the sun and feel the wind upon my skin?" She looked at him earnestly, trying not to flinch away or give him any reason to distrust her. She knew he would come for her--Lutherian would come.

Cereus silently cursed himself when Ashe asked for something to eat. Really he needed to start bringing her something as well. Perhaps he could use this as an opportunity to find something suitable for the mare? Hurriedly, trying to avoid suspicion, the stallion searched his brain for some reason as not to give her any of the herbs. As he was about to reply, she switched the subject, relieving him of having to answer.
So she wanted to go out? Well, that could easily be arranged. She hadn't tried to run yet and he doubted that she needed any excuse to get out just to try and make a break for it. Of course he would have to be careful of what he showed her. If he took her too far or showed her too much she might begin to find her way around a little too well. However, he did like to keep his pets happy and she had been such a good pet thus far.
"I think that could be arranged." He started off slowly, choosing his words as carefully as he could. "We could go out now if you would like. I'll just leave these herbs for Akiko. Perhaps we could find something that you might like? Then I could bring them back for you when I go out for hers." The stallion continued on pleasantly as he set the herbs in Akiko's nook. "How does that sound?" He asked cheerfully.

Ashe looked into the sheen of his luminous eyes, and saw something flicker. She didn't know what or why, but something was causing him to divert his eyes from her.
Her heart thrilled when he said he would take her out in the open. It'd been so long since she'd been outside, and to find the fresh foods she wanted. She was trembling with excitement to be able to feel the wind in her hair.
He trusted her, maybe cared for her in his own way. Maybe when she had the chance, she could use that against him...But Lutheria would surely come for her before then.

The stallion stood patiently, awaiting the mare's response. When no response came, his mind began to race. Did she not want to go out after all? Perhaps she was still curious about the herbs that he had brought just for Akiko. No matter what he knew that he could not allow her to ask such questions. If ever the mare found about what he had been doing to the little pixie's memory he knew she would become a lot less of a passive prisoner. No, things were just the way that he liked them right now and he could not allow her to go meddling about and mucking things up.
"Was there anything in particular that he wanted to see?" He asked her hesitantly. He must continue to keep the conversation going in order to keep her from asking too many questions. Perhaps if he could get her out for a little while, spend some time with her, maybe then she would be happier. Happiness. What did he care? Why did he feel that he wanted her to be happy? No, that was a lie. He didn't particularly care for her happiness. He simply wanted her to stay here without causing any trouble. Yet, was that perhaps a lie? Was there maybe some deep down part of him that did actually care for her? It was possible, but if that was the truth, than maybe he did care about her happiness.
Shaking the dangerous thoughts from his head, Cereus looked to the mare, hoping that she might finally respond.

His voice was in stark contrast to his appearance and to what she knew to be true. He had the velvet voice of an angel. Silky, smooth. Sultry. It was as if something had fallen from the heavens itself. The sound was appeasing and kind. He made you feel like he really did care. But did he care about anything at all? Did she even care?
Was there any good in him? Or was he a being void of light and filled with darkness? She didn't like the way her thoughts were going...She didn't like the way his voice filled her mind with a pleasant sensation. His voice was poison...it stuck to the sides of her throat and thickened her voice for a moment so that she could not speak.
"Will you show me some herbs for meals? Will you show me how to gather some things that I would be...allowed to gather on my own? Things that are safe and good, that would be pleasant to taste and try and feel?" Her voice was smooth, even but she came nowhere near as close to his velvet tongue. She was struggling with what to think or say to him.

“There are all sorts of plants out there I could show you.” The stallion searched through his mind, trying to remember the different sort of plants that he had particularly liked or ones that his father had pointed out to him. There were certainly a good number of them. How did he remember which ones were good and which were bad? If he remembered correctly his father had tried teasing him as a colt, saying that the cat tails were particularly delicious. Cereus, had always been horrified by that thought. Why would you eat a cat’s tail? However, it seemed that his father hadn’t ever meant an actual cat at all and was talking about the plant instead. The first time Cereus tried the plant he hadn’t particularly liked it. It was odd, a bit rough at the top and a little awkward to eat. Perhaps he could try it again? Or maybe his father had only ever been teasing them and the cat tails weren’t even edible. Knowing his father, that wouldn’t exactly surprise him if it was indeed the case.
“Let’s see. I know my father had had a particular fondness for cat tails, although I’m not entirely sure how edible those are to begin with, I never did care for them. My own personal favorite would be cotton grass. It’s not particularly easy to find but it is certainly worth the search for it once you do find it. Sundew isn’t too bad either. The bugs that the plant eats give it rather… interesting flavors I suppose.” The stallion paused a moment more before continuing on. “Sweet Gale is also a particularly good one, a little sweeter for my tastes but perhaps you would be partial to it?” Cereus asked Ashe, hoping that perhaps he could find something that he could start bringing her. It would certainly help keep her from asking about Akiko’s herbs. At least he hoped that it would.

Ashe listened intently to Cereus trying to process all the information in so short of a time. She wanted to be able to remember, she hoped that she would be allowed the freedom to go around as she pleased. "Can I try some?" She asked it sweetly. "Are the herbs of Aikiko's sweet too?"

Cereus' smile faltered a little as Acacia questioned him. Her questions were a little too inquisitive for him. He doubted that she actually suspected anything of the herbs he brought Akiko, yet he wasn't about to give her any reason to. "There are all sorts of things that you can sample." He smiled at the mare again, speaking as if he had nothing to hide. "I suppose you could try the herbs I bring Akiko if you really wanted to, yet I find them a little too...coarse." He said nonchalantly. "Something about the taste and the texture seem a little odd to me. Yet she does seem to like them so, I suppose to each their own." The stallion continued on.
"Now then," He spoke once more, hoping to divert the mare's attention from the herbs. "There likely won't be much daylight left so we better get moving if you wanted to sample a few things. We should have just enough time to hit all of my usual spots before we'll need to be headed back. Granted you'll be fine in the dark with me around, yet without my particular eyesight you might find yourself having a bit of trouble crossing these lands in the dark." Cereus looked at the mare, studying her face. Hoping he could find any hint that she suspected the herbs, hoping that she would not.

Ashe could sense the slight tensing in his voice. DId he really think she would try to run away when she had no idea where they were or the way out? She may want to get free, but she didn't want to die. There was no point really in running away, not now. She had to bid her time--be patient and compliant or else she really wouldn't get that far. She needed to lull him.
"I'm not afraid of the dark," she said coyly as she looked up into his eyes. "And I'm not afraid of being alone with you in the dark either. We can take our time," she moved slowly forward. "She does seem to love those herbs," she paused delicately. "I wish there was something we could find that would help her memory though. Or has she always been...that way?"

Cereus cursed the mare silently. Why couldn't she ever just leave things be? Certainly she had been one of his most agreeable prisoners to date, but always with the questions. And these questions were getting dangerous. If Ashe found out what the herbs did she would certainly tell Akiko and the mare wouldn't eat them anymore. Then what would he do? They'd likely form some sort of uprising against him, forcing him to let them go. Who knows, maybe he would even. He liked quiet, pleasant, and agreeable prisoners. Not rebellious, trouble causing ones.
His face fell a little as he responded to Ashe's question. "Sadly it appears so." He started out quietly, pausing only a moment before continuing on. "You see, she came to my cave seeking shelter. She didn't remember any of her past or much of anything really. I've never been able to figure out why her memory has been so poor, but I've been looking into different herbs to try to treat it. So far nothing has helped much at all. I'm afraid I've also exhausted all of my resources. The only other herbs that might help are a good week or two journey away." Cereus continued on somberly, blatantly lying to the mare. "But come, we mustn't dwell on such things. Perhaps her memory will grow better with time."

Ashe sighed lightly, as she listened to him. How much of this was truth and how much was lie? His voice made it feel like it could be either. He was smooth, easy-going. He'd been kind to her so far, never demanding or asking for...anything. That's when she really started to think about why she was there. Why did he want her after all? Why did he want Akiko?
She stopped and looked up into his luminous eyes, the many lids blinking at her. "Why did you want me?" She asked it without preamble. It was a fair enough question--perhaps the question she should have been asking since the beginning.
Why had he wanted to take her? Was he lonely? Was there something she had that he wanted? There had to be a purpose to this. How much was lies and how much truth? What would it matter in the end?
For a moment, her heart pulsed loudly in her ears like she was running. How would he react to her question? Would he grow angry or vindictive or would his tongue stay laced with velvet? She lifted her chin, and stared him in the eyes. She wasn't afraid, but she was prepared.
