Ness was waking up in the late afternoon. She had been out late again having fun and whatnot. Of course, she did this all the time. Sometimes, the best fun was at night. This was especially true in the winter.
Spring had started coming early this year. With spring came earlier hours of daylight and warm sunshine. This also brought equal opportunities for fun as the night did. Ness was especially fond of jumping on the trampoline, finding ice cream vendors, and practicing gymnastics out in the yard or local fields. She especially loved doing round ups. She also especially adored walking around on her hands to impress other star kitties she met.
She walked outside the house and looked up at the air debating which of the previously mentioned activities she would do. In the end, none of them really appealed to her at the moment. This meant time to be random. Oh yes, as reliable as she was to do some things; she also had the occassional penchant for being totally and completely random. This often led to adventure or a good time. At the least, it usually led to a discovery which led to insatiable curiosity and the seeking of further knowledge.
Well, this day would just have to start with a walk. She'd see where one foot in front of the other would take her.

Betelgeuse had heard many stories of things you can only do in spring. Or was it during the vernal equinox? He couldn't quite remember. Whatever it was, he knew he wanted to do them, while he still could. He took a carton of eggs out of the fridge off of the only shelf he could reach - the lowest one - and went outside. When he opened it, he saw why it was there. Half of them had been used already. "I'll be extra careful not to break them then. I'm sure even I can manage not to mess that up." He took one egg and stood it on the lawn. It fell down. "Let me try that again..."

Then it was she had just been wandering aimlessly. Until she just happened to pass by of all people, that poor blue lad she met the other day on her way home. That one with the arm all bandaged up. She remembered him saying at some point on the way back that they were close enough to his home that she could leave him; but she hadn't really paid much attention to landmarks or other things to help her remember where that was.
She was still a few yards off, and so she decided to do her flip up on her hands to walk up quietly behind him. Teehee! She crept up slowly balancing her body on her paws. She pawed here and there, pausing once or twice. Then, as she got close, she moved her hiney in a way to make her tail fall forward. Then, she started to curl her feet towards her body as she was getting ready to spring up and launch into the air and do a fancy landing in front of him.
She let the tips of her tail lay down on top of his head as though it looked like his head had suddenly sprung up a fountain of fur. By then, no matter how hard she had been trying to be stealthy, she couldn't help the sound of the giggle that escaped her.

"Eek!" She had surprised him. He dropped the egg he was trying to balance and it rolled away.
Then, he swept her fluffy tail out of his eyes and looked behind him. He sighed in relief. "Oh, it's just you." He remembered seeing her fluttering around a few days ago. "From behind, I thought it was a giant bug. You must have a great sense of balance to be able to do that."
"Sorry, but what was your name again? Mine is Betelgeuse, but you can call whatever you like. Because I know it's really long. A real mouthful." After that, he laughed nervously.

As he brushed away her tail and began to talk to her, she then did do her flip into the air. Then, she spun around as she landed and made a 'ta-da' type pose. She then bent down to pick up his egg she made him lose. She brought it back to him and nodded as she tried to commit that long name to memory.
"So, can i call you Beetee for short?" She assumed this was probably the case since he had said whatever she liked. "You can just call me Ness. That's the only name i really go by. Other names I might go by is "hey awesome" or sometimes.. "you there"... and... every once in a while.. I just might answer to "my butterfly"." Then, she laughed since she was mostly being silly. "Sorry I made you drop your egg." Her eyes then noticed the container. Hmm.

"Yes, Ness, Beetee is fine." He smiled. It felt nice hearing someone else talk about him like that. He also thought she was very amusing with the way she performed and all.
"Thanks so much for getting it for me! And that's fine. There's more where that came from." He pointed to the carton next to him. Then, he tried to balance the egg again. It managed to stay on end for seconds before falling over. "Whoa! That's better than before." Then, he looked over at Ness and asked, "Do you want to try?"

Ness stood next to him leaning down. Her eyes peered at the egg that he was putting down. "What... is it that we're trying to do exactly?" She then looked at him. "How's your arm doing?"
She then walked a little more to be opposite of him. "Well.. I did make you lose it. So... are we just trying ot make it stand up? You know.. sometimes humans go to these places with big fields in funny shapes.. and they knock small white balls into these holes in the ground.. and they use little things to put the balls on. I bet that's what we need. Little things to hold the eggs..."

"In spring, I heard you can stand things on end that you normally can't. So now, I'm trying to do that." He looked over at his arm. He was surprised that he barely noticed the sling now. "It's better than before. She said if I don't use it, then it should get better by next month."
"I remember seeing something like that on a window inside the house. The humans who played would call out bird names like eagle sometimes." He wasn't sure if "window" was the right word, since it never showed what was going on outside, but he couldn't think of what else to call it. "If we had something like them to put them on, it would be easier, but that would defeat the point, wouldn't it?"

Ness sat down on the grass and crossed her legs indian style. Then, she looked hard at the egg with a paw under her chin. "Hmm... Yeah ok, but... if the egg is supposed to stand on end. Wouldn't it do right away? or, are you not doing it right? I wonder what all that applies to? just eggs?"
She thought about how humans played that game. "You know what might be funny?" She grew a mischevious grin. "Like sometime.. we should go hide in a tree or field near where they play that game. Then, we keep a bag of nuts, rocks, or balls with us. Everytime they hit their stick on it and send one flying; we throw one at them. then, they'll be all like. 'OH-EM-GEE!!! Where do these balls keep coming from?' You know? I think that'd be funny." She found it so much so she laughed as though she were watching it already. She mused to herself how that would be hilarious; especially if noone saw them.

"You're right. I must be messing up. I heard it worked with brooms too, but I looked everywhere inside and could only find a vacuum cleaner." He had considered taking it along with him, but it was a big wet/dry one with wheels. He remembered hiding the first time it was used, because it sounded like a monster.
He thought about what she had just said next. Then, it clicked and he laughed. "That is funny! So long as no one got hurt, of course." He mimed along with what he said next. "The balls sound funniest to me, because then, they would be thinking, didn't I hit the ball that way? How'd it get back over here? No, wait, I see my ball waaay over there. What is this then?" He stopped and laughed some more.

Ness giggled and laughed. She imagined watching someone hear a golf ball drop behind them. They look at it confused. She found that a splendid idea. Her ponytail slumped over her shoulder as she rocked forward with her giggles. "That right there. That idea.... is brilliant. We should definitely see about finding some of those kinds of balls then. Wonder where we can get some? I don't think my human has any of that sort of thing."
Her human definitely almost never kept any sports equipment around aside some bowling shoes and a bowling ball. That was far too big for this idea. She had started to think about his vacuum cleaner comment. "Hey, did you know that if you put a vacuum cleaner hose on the top part of an egg; it can suck it so that the egg shell gets stuck in the tube opening... and it breaks it off the bottom of the egg."

"I saw a man with them once. He comes around every now and then, but he doesn't live here. His house is a little north of here." He thought of a blonde man he saw wearing an outfit with argyle print in loud, clashing colors.
"I didn't know that. Maybe I should try that." He looked behind him at the house. He thought about how exactly he would get the vaccuum cleaner out here, while still having in plugged in inside. "Hmm... Ness, would you like to come inside?"

The idea of doing something most curious and possibly mischevious had sudden rippling currents of adrenaline revving up inside of her. Her wings were giving it away in little twitches here and there. Her eyes started to even shine as she leaned forward towards him. "Heck yeah i'll go in! Got any ice creams?"
She pondered for a little while in following him inside; a guy up north huh. She wondered how far it really was and how long that takes. She hadn't really traveled very far. The most she went is about half a day, and that wasn't really very far at all. That was just for running through a brook that was very shallow and only up to her ankles. "Hmm... you know... if we knew just how far and planned the day right; we could still go out to see about this man and his balls."

"Yes?" He wasn't expecting to be asked that question, so his response came out sounded more like a question than he intended. "Funny you should ask, because there's actually an ice cream cart in there."
"I never went there myself, but she said it was 15 minutes away. I'm guessing it'd take longer, since I'm shorter than a human, but it shouldn't take longer than a day." He cocked his head and then said, "Right?"
"I'm glad you're excited about this." He walked toward the house and pushed the door open. "You can come inside now. Maybe we can eat before we take a vacuum cleaner out?"
