Jordan picked a route along the inside of the wall, a path where the grass was worn down with the tread of many feet. In the mornings, he ran here; at this time of day, though, it was usually unfrequented. Once they were far enough from the graveyard and the groups of hunters and trainees paying their respects, he looked over at Candace, his expression somber. "I'm assuming you overheard something disturbing too."

Candace walked in silence alongside Jordan, her hands in her pockets and her head tipped back to stare up at the sky with a frown. This didn't sit right with her. The kidnappings, the killings, the deaths, the secrets..why did there have to be so many ******** secrets around here? They were all on the same side! They all deserved to know s**t about what they were fighting it wasn't right to just go 'here is where you will be have fun oh you know nothing about your target WHAT A SHAME BYE!' Ugh!
Jordan broke the silence and she sighed, nodding her head and giving him a look. "Apparently we're going on a large mission soon, and they're deploying over a hundred of us..." She looked ahead of them now, kicking at the grass a little as they walked. She didn't like this. "The leaders are hiding something. Not just from us, but from everyone. Apparently they cleared all information about nineteen-ninety to two-thousand..anything from that decade is gone." The horsemen, the deaths, the missions...were they all leading up to something?
"Back on that mission, the one with the kidnapped children...you sounded like you might know where they'd have been taken." Candace raised a brow and looked over at Jordan beside her again, looking curious. "Do you know anything? I feel like...there's suddenly a lot I'm missing out on despite being around all the time, and I don't like it."

"I'm probably not supposed to know any of this," Jordan said. "Just a Sun and all that. But I've been finding some seriously disturbing data." He tucked his hands into his pockets and frowned, thinking about where to start. "Okay," he said after a moment. "Have you heard anything about the mission in 1999? A mission comprised of 200 hunters, related to the Horsemen and the Apocalpyse. Two out of 200 came back."
He looked sideways at Candace, waiting for her reaction.

Candace gave a soft snort and rolled her eyes as Jordan told he probably wasn't supposed to know what he knew. Yeah, right. And neither were any of the hunters ranked above them, apparently. Who the ******** cared at this point? Jordan knew something and she wanted to know, too. "..Not that I can recall..the apocalypse? Really? Are they for real?" By 'they' she meant the horsemen. She knew the horsemen were real but seriously? They wanted to bring on the ******** apocalypse?! What the hell was that!
...Only..only two out of... "Oh my god." Candace's eyes were wide and she stopped walking, staring at Jordan. Two out of two hundred survived a mission and now they were only sending almost half of that?! What did they want no survivors or something? Wh..what the hell! Candace looked away, trying to think of anything that could help her figure this out. A mission in 1999 involving the apocalypse? So...y2k? But that..
Well...she did..see things that night.
Candace was quiet as she tried hard to think back on it. What had she seen? Shadows. Everywhere. And a...a man..a man in black with blood on his hands and...people in white coats sneaking around in the shadows. "So...they're repeating that mission, then? What do you know?" And how did he know things he 'wasn't supposed to know'?

"They seem to be repeating it; as far as I can tell, though, we may be stronger and better prepared for it. Back then, there were Hunters who used only runic weaponry. Unbonded. I've been unable to find out why, but the implications there are clear. The Death division has been doing research into that mission and the incidents that led up to it. I got a look at some of that, purely by accident."
He took a deep breath, continued. "One of the reports I read stated that the Horsemen were keeping humans trapped in their Lairs and using them to farm Fear. The Lair we were searching recently may have been a site, judging by the amount of bone and the lost weapon tablets there." He hesitated. "That's what I was talking about at the park. I hope I'm wrong."

Unbonded hunters? That...wow. That was a surprise. "..Well, e even now the weapon converter isn't flawless. Have you ever seen the process? it's interesting...maybe it's newer technology. I doubt half of what we see now existed or was even possible twelve years ago." Candace said with quiet thoughtfulness, mostly to herself to as not to interrupt Jordan. It made sense but that didn't make it any less strange compared to now when everyone had a bonded weapon. How did unbonded hunters even get by? They must have been the strongest, most durable hunters strictly because they had no shield to depend on. Damn. That must have been scary.
Ah, so it had been an accident. That still didn't sit right with Candace. Why were they keeping secrets on something so vitally important?
"They what?!" Candace's eyes widened as she stared at Jordan with a look that was a mixture of disgust and horror. They were...they..farmed fear out of humans?! That was horrible! These things were just..ugh! She wanted them gone. "That is just...so..! It's disgusting. Doing it with adults is one thing but to kidnap children for that is just...it's sick!" He found it by accident, but there had to be more. There had to be a way she could read over these files herself. There had to be a way she could see this all for herself and read any details Jordan may have missed out on. "So...the two survivors.." She frowned. "Is it...said who they were?" Candace had assumptions but...she wanted to be sure. She wanted to see. How could she have missed something this big?

"It makes me wonder what happened to make the jump in runic tech possible, and when it happened. Deus Ex has been here for long time, but if there have been significant advances in the past twelve years, some kind of breakthrough must have happened." Jordan shook his head; this was a tangent. Wasn't it? Or was it related more closely somehow? "I wish I had clearance to get at the relevant files," he grumbled, frustrated. "Keeping all of this quiet seems counterproductive. There's enough information available just from observation and hearsay to scare everyone. Are the prospects bad enough that having it out in the open would do more damage?"
He nodded in agreement. "It's horrifying. What it implies is also horrifying. The Horsemen are stepping up activity and gathering Fear; the files mentioned signs and omens, and we've been seeing repeating motifs and occurrences at investigation sites. On our side, there's a large-scale mission planned, and there was a note in Sandy's phone that stated it was Apocalypse level and gave a date of April first." He grimaced. "God, I wish I could have talked to Sandy ... she's the one who caught us cleaning up the files, and she helped us cover for it." His voice held a note of regret; he fell silent for a few moments before continuing. "At any rate, there's someone, probably in Death division, who disagrees with the policy of silence. I don't know who, and I don't feel safe using the contact in the phone; someone was trying to trace it."
"The information I have didn't state who the survivors were. I haven't yet had a chance to talk to the person whose notes I found; she seems to have had a look at a primary data source I haven't been able to find myself."

"It does seem like a leap, huh? To go from a few bonded hunters to all bonded hunters...Clarice has only been a hunter for six years, and there's no telling how long H has been the Life leader." H was well in age compared to the rest of the leaders though, and Life seemed like an easy division to not die in. It was possible H had been a leader for a long, long time. She wouldn't be surprised judging from his office and his suite; they were not rooms owned by someone who had had them for a short time. Had he been on that mission? Candace ruffled her own hair and looked toward the facility with clear disapproval. "It's not right that they keep secrets from everyone. Secrets get people killed." She didn't like this mentality that they were disposable and easily replaceable. It wasn't right.
Things like the horsemen? They deserved to know what they were up against. "That explains our external missions...April first? Are you kidding me?" Candace gave a short laugh and shook her head, rubbing her temple and sighing. She wished she'd known Sandy before this now; that mission had been the first time she'd ever seen the Death hunter. "That was nice of her...I'm sure there's someone we can find. Someone was trying to trace her phone? That's strange.." Okay, maybe not strange.
This didn't sit well with Candace. If they could talk to the survivors maybe they could find something out. "She? Whose notes? We could go find her right now and ask her."

"I'd like to know the reasoning behind the secrecy." Jordan frowned thoughtfully towards the main complex. "There has to be some justification, reasonable or otherwise. There's more to this; we've only uncovered the edges of something big, something with a lot of history. The reasoning could even be as simple as this: if there's enough casualties expected, depending on what must be done, perhaps they can't afford to have anyone attempting to back out." He refocused, shook his head. "There's no way for us to know. Not now, anyway. Maybe once we're - er," he paused, and shot a look at Candace, "if we're eventually in a position to have easy access to that kind of information." "I wish I was kidding. Harrison thought someone was pranking me. But there's enough separate evidence that I don't think it's a joke." He ran a hand through his hair. "Not strange at all, considering that I think someone sent me the phone without official authorization, and there's sensitive information on it. Nothing's come out of the attempted trace, though. Well, yet, anyway." "You've met Clerise?" he asked. "One of the lambs, Life division. I'll text her. Give me a moment." ILU 5 EVR Text to Clerise: Could you meet me out by the outer wall near the training grounds if you're not busy? I want to talk to you about something.

Clerise had been in the gym, entirely absorbed in her workout. Her phone beeped from where things were-- huh. Weird. No one ever texted her. prolixity uh sure this isnt foreboding at all nope be there in a minute Clerise desummoned Balthazar, tucking him back into her coat pocket, suddenly worried. Just last night she'd taken those notes, christ. It dawned on the Life trainee that, in her sleepy haze, she'd left them behind. Woops. She made her way to where Jordan said to meet him, surprised by the fact that Candace was there, too. "Uhh." A blink, then a two finger wave. "Hiya."

"Sorry about the message," Jordan said, and smiled apologetically. "Didn't mean to freak you out. Just needed to talk to you. You were in the Life labs last night, right?" He extracted a folded piece of paper from an inside pocket of his coat and handed it to her - the notes she'd left behind.

"Hopefully it isn't something stupid like competition between the division leaders." Candace groaned. Jordan's reasoning made sense which was why it couldn't possibly be that. Logic? What is logic.
Candace raised a brow when Jordan mentioned Harrison. "You've been spending a lot of time with Harrison~?" She asked gently, trying not to get too far off topic. This was serious, more serious than if her best friend was finally getting some action. Though he had a point with the phone. Who was tracing it? Caelius, perhaps?
..Clerise had notes on this stuff? Geeze. That was actually very surprising to hear, something clear just by looking at the expression on Candace's face. "Yeah, I know Clerise..." She gave a nod as Jordan began to text her, waiting quietly for the girl to arrive. How much did Clerise know? Candace was not liking that she was the last to find this out. It didn't sit right with her at all.
"Hey." She called out as Clerise approached them, looking to Jordan when he produced...the notes. Had Clerise really been necessary if he had the notes? Oh well. "We wanted to ask you about them." Candace had questions of her own now.

"Heya," Clerise waved at Candace next, grinning a bit at them both. Turning back to Jordan, she shrugged lightly. "It's no big deal, I was kind of freaked out any-"
She stared at the paper in his hand, wincing. Obviously, she had not meant to leave them there.
"Aaaand that would be why." She took the notes, reading over them with a sigh, then met their gazes with her own. "What about 'em?"

"Wouldn't put it past them," Jordan sighed. "I hope it's not that."
"Sometimes," he said. "I asked him for help with the phone because of B0nez - his unsummoned form is a USB drive, you know, and I thought perhaps he could get into the data on the phone if we hooked it up to the computer. It worked." He looked rather pleased that his guess had been correct. He'd also deflected the topic of spending time with Harrison, though the slight flush along his cheekbones suggested that there was some degree of non-professional motivation involved.
He nodded to Clerise. "I wanted to ask you where you got the information you wrote down. I saw that the search you were doing on the computers didn't yield anything, and I haven't been able to find much using the material that's generally available. Where did these points come from? I'm trying to get a better picture of what happened in 1999 and what's going on now; I've been talking to Candace about it." He paused, smiled a little. "I logged you out and took the notes with me - you gotta be more careful about that."

She sighed in relief, launching herself at Jordan for a quick hug.
"You have fully earned your named as 'the brains', dude. I owe you," she said, nodding resolutely.
Clerise debated giving away who her source was. She trusted Jordan, as much as she could for only having met him a few times, but Candace hadn't quite earned it yet.
"Someone," she settled on, refusing to give the other ginger away for now, not knowing that he and Jordan were on half decent terms.
"They told me that the mission had been gigantic, and that there had been two survivors and that's about it. Four division leaders perished, all but Mist. It was in Time's Square." Clerise looked uncomfortable. "The last horseman I saw demanded to know what lair we'd been in-- they wanted to know the one Caelius took us to."
