Harrison would receive a text Tuesday morning, that is at exactly 4:16 am, that looked something like this:

Text From Julie

................................. I missed your promotion ):
Come to my room now, and we can celebrate instead okay ):

Harrison hadn't met the Moon Leader, who remained some kinda mysterious shadowy figure that he assumed was off protecting hunters by moonlight. Or maybe keeping them safe from the shadows. He really wasn't sure what the pinnacle of protective forces did with their time.

He did know what Julie did on Missions, which so far had been stabbing things and being smug and crying that one time with all the corpses. She did have pretty awesome Christmas decorations.

Harrison wasn't as worried about seeing Killer's guts strewn everywhere. Killer could pretty much defend himself at this point, they'd been mowing through enough minis in the Battledome to feed an army.

Still, it was okay that Clarice did his promotion, right? The text didn't say anything like...they were taking it back. Maybe she'd...baked cookies. Cookies that weren't filled with mind-altering substances. Cookies at four in the morning. Still, Julie was his Boss.

He got dressed, dragged himself upstairs, and knocked.

The spectacle that opened the door could not be explained by mere human eyes: it was a good thing they were Hunters. Perhaps.

Julie stood at the doorway, dressed in an oversized Rainbow Brite t-shirt, wearing only rainbow stockings and pink fuzzy slippers. There was a small owl hairclip in addition to her usual assortment, but what was a little creepier still was the thick streaks of black running down her eyes - and she was still crying it seemed. Upon seeing Harrison standing at the door though, she simply gave a huge sniffle, rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand - smearing her makeup even more - and continue to stare at the trainee with large doe eyes.

She let Harrison into the room before sitting back on her plush couch. There was work on the couch: it looked like she had been in the process of stitching together either a giant stuffed quilt cat or a gathering a small army of stuffed quilt cats. "Oh, I'm sorry, I just-" Julie gave a huge sniffle as she pushed the whole assortment onto the ground - "Here, have a seat." A quavering smile. "I-I was so busy in other things, and I missed your promotion mission, oh, and I never finished his present and-"

She blew her nose loudly on her embroidered handkerchief. "Thank you for coming Stevie, do you want any cookies by the way?"

Harrison was having a hard time wrapping his mind around his lady boss who was crying and not wearing pants.

None of these were situations he was equipped to deal with.

He focused on the problems he could handle. He sat down.

"It's Harrison. Whose present? And uh, sure, what kind of cookies are they?"

The last time he refused drugged baked goods from Julie she stuffed one in his mouth, so he thought this time it was better to just accept the cookie and pretend to eat it.

She had just managed to grab two oatmeal raisin cookies from somewhere in the cotton stuffing of her half-finished creations when she began sniffling again at Harrison's mention of who the present belonged to. "Bob- no um, Billy - um, um-" She fidgeted fidgeting with her t-shirt - "Oh, I- I forgot his name."

The Moon Hunter assistant, even more perplexed now, was wringing her t-shirt and sniffling in loud intervals, occasionally picking up a stuffed animal to fish another cookie out of before sniffling and tossing it back onto the ground. With all the t-shirt wringing, it was really hard not to notice her Last Unicorn pant-

- Seconds later, Julie had already stood up, once again wiping her face with the back of one hand before giving the Moon trainee another withering smile. It was terrifying. "Well um, congratulations Stevie, I am so proud of you, and John, and- oh! I made you a congratulations gift anyway!"

She nearly tripped over her own slippers in excitement as she ran to her room, slamming the door behind her. A few seconds later, she came out with a hand-knitted Smurfs t-shirt featuring Papa Smurf. "I made it because it reminded me of you, because his white beard is just like yours." She offered it to the trainee, eyes wide, a little overly excited. "So does it fit?"

Alright. Not good with the name thing. Maybe he should just be grateful she remembered Stevie. Her taste in underwear was good any way.

"Holy s**t," Harrison said, forgetting to pretend to eat the cookies, "Thanks. You made this? Uh. I mean. Ma'am. ...Thank you." She probably meant a white beard like unicorns, because a lot of unicorns had them, and he had a lot of unicorn s**t. He didn't even know you could hand-knit a t-shirt.

"Looks like just my size," he said, wary about taking off the t-shirt he was already wearing.

"Oh, well, thank you," Julie replied, suddenly extremely flustered. Harrison had complimented her, he had actually appreciated her hard work. "It-it means a lot to me, I just-" She began to knead her own shirt again, wondering if she shouldn't have used the Runic experimental shrinking ray to shrink it t-shirt sized: it would have been a lot cuter in its original knitted form, and personally, she thought the unicorn eye came out too small, - " I think you should try it on. Here."

She leaned over, excited, staring at Harrison with something that could only be described as creepily predatory-

- And then nearly fell over on top of herself as she suddenly did an amazing maneuver that involved a backwards somersault, followed by a roll sideways that lead to her bursting up from the couch, or well, standing on it. "STEVIE!"

This was said very loud.

"I almost forgot, this is-this is no time for gifts Stevie, something very important is happening." She gave Harrison a something very important is happening look. "We need to go on a mission, now."

Harrison leaned back for every inch Julie leaned forward.

"Look, uh, I mean, thanks for...I mean ...you're...real nice and all. But- uh-" he was interrupted by acrobatics, and had a hard time deciding whether or not he was being attacked. Why did Julie move so fast.

"W...what mission?"

While Julie did not full-on pout, she was coming very close, face set between indignation with a sprinkling of petulance. "The mission, Stevie, the mission to find the perfect recipe." The Moon Hunter pulled out a notebook from the pile of half-stitched plushes, a notebook that notably could not belong to anyone else, covered head to toe in sequins and Lisa Frank stickers, with a smattering of 1990's holograph stickers for extra measure. She flipped a few pages in and creased down the page for Harrison to read.

On the page was a single word with what looked like either a complicated language written entirely in code, or Julie's attempt at drawing confections.

Joy.

Now, Harrison knew what Joy was. He was not sure what had happened to make the entire week of Christmas was a drug-induced blur, but he knew about the cookies at least, "...Didn't you make those already?" Harrison asked.

He very distinctly remembered the cookies.

"No!"

A couple of things happened at this point. Number one, in her moment of exclamation, Julie had dropped her notebook right into the pile of half-headless cat plushes again. Number two, by the time Harrison had reacted to what just happened, again, again, the Moon Hunter was already pulling the trainee out of the room. A few Hunters lazing around the hallways suddenly stiffened and did their best to look busy or really, make a tactical retreat.

"Okay so," Julie explained, entirely uncaring as she walked around only in her oversized t-shirt and rainbow stalkings while dragging Harrison halfway across Deus for reasons unexplained, "Fear is all that.... Stuff stuff." Wow Julie, way to explain the entire purpose of Deus Ex. "Anyway! That stuff doesn't matter, what is important is the Joy.

Finally the world stopped moving to fast or really, the Moon Hunter came to a halt in front of the hospital-slash-labs for some reason. "It's not the same Stevie, its definately not the same. We need to find true joy."

She was walking again, dragging her self-proclaimed protege down three flights of stairs, up one flight again, down another, through the women's bathroom, until they finally arrived at a small simple looking room. It was locked, which Julie resolved by pulling out a gaudy rainbow brite keychain set. A few setbacks later and they were in a small room, a storage closet even. Each shelf of the closet was labelled with the oddest things such as Preserved Follyjoy eyes.

"Now, this mission is important Stevie," Julie finally elaborated, as she helped herself to that jar and a few others. "We are going to make the most absolute, most wonderful Joy recipe there ever was okay?"

A pause as she tried to reach for a jar labelled 'Unicorn droppings' at the top shelf to no avail. She looked helplessly at Harrison for a second.

Harrison followed her the best he could, which meant trying to move his legs while being hauled with unnatural strength away from the Hall of Plushies and down the Hallway of Uncertainty.

"Yeah,
joy," he repeated, muffled in case just saying the word set Julie off.

When they came to a halt, Harrison had no idea where they were. They might have gone through the women's bathroom at some point. His t-shirt, he noticed, was extremely stretched out.

The closet was either a pantry or a sideshow. He hoped for the last one, but there was that word recipe again.

He scooted a small stepstool over with his foot, then reached up to get the jar. Like rest of the very literally mystical s**t he often found himself cleaning up, it was not normal.

It wasn't herpicorn s**t, at least. That was bright yellow and star-shaped. With smiley faces on it.

"....This?" he asked.
