[ exclaim gore warning exclaim ] Tonight, in Clerise's subconscious mind, the creature from the four clans had placed the parasite into Eva's ear, like it had promised. It burrowed around inside of the girl, traveling under her skin like some subdermal mole, wet and horrible sounds accompanying the movement. It went still, for a time, leaving Eva time to beg for Clerise, for anyone, to help her. To save her. The monster laughed, caressing her hair in a mockery of sympathy, crooning to her that such help would never arrive. There were tears on Eva's face, wet and shining on her cheeks, her eyes so full of pain. The parasite burst forth from just below her sternum, splattering Clerise with bone fragments and innards as she laid helpless and bound before the carnage. In the dream, she could not turn away, vision drawn to the limp body writhing on the ground in pain. Clerise watched the parasite feast on Eva's face, its mandibles tearing away strips of skin and burrowing into her eye socket, devouring it, and-- [ exclaim gore over exclaim ] She started from the nightmare with a barely contained shout, her entire body shaking. Pale and clammy, Clerise sat up and tightened her fingers in the sweat-drenched sheets, the grip impossibly tight. Conveniently, she ignored the scant few tears that slid down her face, stoically refusing to weep over what was purely confined to the realm of sleep. Even as Clerise struggled to compose herself for no audience but own mind, she realized it was natural to have nightmares, after all that had been said and done. They had been conned by parasites wearing the skin of children, lead to the Witch's hut by a corrupted Hanzel and Gretel. From there, they had been attacked and overtaken by creatures, and had been roused from unconsciousness up by a member of the four clans, who had ensured that they'd been bound and tied. A human had died in front of her and a hunter had been tortured in front of her. Caelius had threatened her life, then nearly taken Reine's. All of these things were nightmare worthy. Nevertheless, it was often Eva that was the focus of her terrors at night, and... Well. Clerise worried. She worried so very much. In a frantic haze, Clerise threw the covers off, running her hands over her face, scrubbing away the evidence of tears. There were more, she knew. They threatened to spill from shining eyes, but she blinked them away. Clerise couldn't help but flinch when the visage of Evie's limp and dying body was burned into the back of her eyelids. Taken by a frenzy, Clerise pulled on a tanktop and some sweatpants, grabbing Balthazar and winding his chain around his wrist. She didn't bother to peer at his cracked face to check the time-- there were more important things to do. Such as hunting down Evie and ensuring her safety. At first, she was walking there, bare feet against the tile. It turned into a jog soon enough, and then a run. Panting, Clerise pounded on her door, hoping desperately that she'd answer. "Evie?" she asked, voice cracking. "Evie, it's Clerise, o-open your door, please, I-" kaiyumi if you don't want to read the gorey bits, basically clerise was worried after a bad dream and ran to evie's room <33

Truth be told, Eva had been having trouble sleeping lately. Then again, who could blame her? When she had accepted Reine's mission request, she had been expecting something simple, something safe. Though Eva would not even consider pinning any blame on Reine--their leader--or their other teammates, she couldn't pin all the blame for her nightmares on the monsters either.
After all, when she closed her eyes, it wasn't just the parasite and the gaping shoulder wound that she saw. In her dream, as she is being held hostage with the parasite held threateningly to her ear, Caelius would suddenly appear from out of nowhere, scythe in hand. There would be a moment of relief--a moment of we're saved--when, without any warning, the Death Hunter would sweep his weapon out in an arc, the blade slicing through her teammates--her friends--in succession. Reine, Clerise, Dakota, Rep--it was always at this moment that Eva jolted awake, sitting straight up as she swiped away tears.
That was how she had passed the last two nights. This time, she wasn't willing to risk falling into that nightmare again. Though Eva was well-aware that it was only a temporary solution, she decided to forgo sleeping altogether that night, switching on her lamp as she sat at her uncomfortable desk and read a book.
Time passed slowly, and she had slowly been dozing off when someone pounded on her door. The unexpected noise--coupled with her already-jumpy mindset--caused Eva to emit a frightened yell, leaping up from her chair in a panic. It took her a few moments to recognize who the voice belonged to, and almost immediately after, she went rushing to the door. "Clerise? Clerise, what's wrong?" The panic in the girl's voice made Eva's own heartbeat pick up, and she threw open the door in alarm.
"Clerise, are you okay? Are you hurt?"

Clerise winced as she heard Evie's shout, nearly clawing at the door with her nails, scrambling at the door and--
Evie was okay.
Without a word, Clerise lunged forward, wrapping her arm around Evie's neck, her trembling just barely perceptible.
"I'm fine, it's--" It was far too familiar an embrace for someone who she only knew through a traumatic and near death experience. She pulled away, strong fingers grasping Evie's shoulders.
"Sorry. Uh. ******** were dead, Eva. You were very, very dead.

Eva stumbled back in surprise, her good arm instinctively wrapping around Clerise's figure when the other girl lunged forward towards her. "Clerise," She said again, her voice rising in panic, "What's wro--a-ah?"
She was surprised by the answer, blinking blankly as Clerise drew back. She was fine? T-then why the--ah. A nightmare. Letting out a sigh, Eva's shoulders sagged in relief. "Thank god. You scared me there. I thought that something..." A weak smile was on her face as she trailed off with a shake of her head. It didn't matter--she was just glad that it wasn't anything too serious, and that the other trainee was safe and sound.
"And don't worry about it," She added, waving her hand dismissively, "I...I know what that's like. Haven't been sleeping too well myself lately either, so..."
Eva lifted her hand, rubbing at her tired eyes. Despite how exhausted she was, she really didn't want to sleep. Not if closing her eyes meant that she would be plagued by those visions again.

Clerise clung to Evie's wrists with her hands, shaking. "I'm sorry," she muttered, eyes cast aside, jittering a little. "It's a wonder you're as together as you are, Evie," is all she says, giving her another hug.
It was less panicked, at least. "I close my eyes and it's like the...thing is ******** seared into the back of my eyelids."
The redhead took Evie's chin in her head, turning her head lightly this way and that-- she looked worse than Clerise did.
"You want some company? Since I was retarded enough to run down here?" A lopsided smile, but the saddest eyes.

The laugh that left Eva's lips was weak, but the smile on her face grew slightly as she reached out to return Clerise's hug. "Don't apologize. And, well...truth be told, I think the only reason I seem together is because I'm so tired."
She held still when Clerise took her chin, emitting a little chuckle. "I don't look too good, do I?" Eva had been avoiding looking into her mirror lately--seeing the dark circles around her eyes and her pale complexion honestly frightened her a little. However, try as she might to convince herself to restore her original sleeping pattern, she found that her fear of seeing that nightmare overpowered all of her attempts.
"Company would be nice," The girl agreed, drawing back and pushing the door open further to admit Clerise entry into her room, "Just, ah. Don't...don't mind all the plushies. They were a Christmas gift from Otto, and I...they're kind of nice to have right now." Eva's pale complexion colored slightly as a pink hue rose in her cheeks.
It sounded a little childish, she knew, but it was true. Though all her plushies used to be scattered about her room haphazardly, Eva had taken time to pile them onto her bed now, arranging them in such a way that she could nest between them comfortably. It was...comforting, and as silly as it sounded, it made her feel safe.
It was also a little embarrassing, she had to admit.

If there was anything she could do, it was be outrageous. To be subdued was unnatural, to be quiet was unsettling, to be drizzle instead of rain was disorienting.
"Oh, girl," Clerise breathed, squeezing Evie's shoulder. "Been there, done that, own a ******** army of t-shirts that prove it, right?"
She looked at the other girl with sad eyes, noting that Eva's were just as harrowed as her own. "You look like you need a nap and some ice cream."
Too bad their freezer was still busted as ******** being let in, the redhead didn't say a word. She explored the room as if it were her own, picking up random plushies and inspecting them with a keen eye, going through each of them methodically.
She finally settled on a little red cat, soft as velvet and red with orange and black accents, cradling it in her arms.
"They're adorable. I didn't really have any as a kid." She looked at the ground, oddly embarrassed. "Not for uh, lack of trying on my dad's part."
She took a seat in front of Evie's bed, arms wrapped around the medium sized toy. "I kind of set them on fire." Clerise offered her a weak grin. "I was a pretty mad little girl. I didn't like being told I was nutter butters."

It was nice having company, Eva realized. Lately, she had the tendency of jumping at her own shadow, so the fact that Clerise was here to chat was her served as some comfort. After all, as adorable and numerous as the plushies were, they could only do so much to dispel the worries that were plaguing her.
"A nap and ice cream would be pretty nice," She admitted, a weak laugh escaping her lips as she picked up her eevee plushie and cuddled it to her chest. She watched Clerise curiously as the other woman sifted through the plushies, though a small smile quirked on her lips when she picked out the red cat.
"They are pretty cute, aren't they?" Eva agreed, turning to look at them rather fondly. She turned back when Clerise spoke again, eyes widening slightly. "On fire--oh." Her surprise suddenly faded to understanding, "Yeah...yeah, I think I can understand that. I...wasn't seen as the most sane kid around in my town either."
Or rather, her classmates and most of the townspeople in general had thought of her as pretty goddamn insane. "Truth be told, it was kind of a relief to come here. For a while...I actually kind of liked it here."

"You're a big bad intermediate-- if you want to leave the grounds on a mission for ice craem and bad movies and maybe popcorn, then damnit, you should be able to!" Clerise shook her fist at the ceiling, then glanced over to Evie, an impish grin on her face.
"Guess we may need to settle on a just a nap until then, huh?" Clerise stroked at the ears of her chosen plush, as if it were a real feline she'd had.
She'd always loved the animals, even if she was too loud and brash for most of them to love her.
"This one reminds me of one of the tigers-- dumb as a rock, but the nicest out of the bunch. High five for us crazies, huh?" Curling up by Evie's bed, resting her head against lean arms, Clerise smiled a little. "Yeah. I know what you mean. It's a relief to know I can DO something about the ********."

Eva laughed, a laugh that had a little more life and humour in it than the previous ones had. After a moment, she cocked her head to the side, looking thoughtful. "I--hmm, can we actually go out for little trips? I was only recently promoted, so I'm still a little shaky on what I can do now." She flopped down onto her bed, only to wince at the shock of pain when she jostled her shoulder. Oops. Trying to shake off the pain, she grinned at Clerise.
"Wonder if I can drag you out with me if I can do an ice cream run sometime?" Ice cream sounded good, as did other terribly unhealthy treats. The food at Deus Ex left much to be desired.
Eva seemed to relax, taking comfort in the fact that Clerise was here with her. She felt much safer with another trainee around. "Mmhm, when I found out that something could actually be done about these things..." The girl shook her head and sighed, "Though I...really like the people here too. You, Reine, puppy--I didn't expect to make any when I first signed up for this, but it's nice having friends."
And, of course, there was the fact that none of them judged each other of being crazy for seeing things. They were all the same boat in that aspect.

"I went on one with Dakota and Reine a while back," Clerise offered with a smile, rubbing Evie's good shoulder. "I think as long as you aren't terrible, you can get some approved leave and go?" She bounced on the bed at the mention of ice cream, grinning. "Dude. We have to go to this place, Marble Slab? God, ******** delicious. They mix extra cookies or ingredients in and stuff, it's delicious." It was nice to chase the loneliness away, to chase that everlasting feeling of being by herself out of her mind. {[ I am still here. ]}You don't ******** count. She raised a brow at puppy. "You have a dog? Where is it?" Casting curious glances around, Clerise made a face as she didn't see one. "Yeah, all the doc told me is that my worst nightmares were real and he was going to help me exact my revenge, or something." A sheepish grin. "I was pretty wasted, if we're being real here. ********' Meximarts."

The girl smiled, feeling herself relax the more she talked to Clerise. Yes, talking about ice cream was far more welcoming than thinking about that terrible mission or about the nightmares they had both apparently been having lately. "Marble Slab, huh? You'll definitely have to take me there sometime! I'd love to forget everything over a big bowl of ice cream." There was a pause, and then she added, "...Or five. I feel like I could go for five bowls."
Ice cream always healed wounds, right? Or well, according to the movies, she knew that it helped with break ups. Eva wasn't so sure that it would have the same effect on near-death experiences.
At the mention of a dog, Eva blinked and also turned to look around for this mysterious dog...only to realize what it was Clerise was referring to. Oops. Laughing, the girl lifted both of her hands, shaking her head furiously. "No, no, sorry! I mean...have you met Otto? Reine and I have been calling him our puppy ever since we started hanging together."
She wasn't entirely sure what to say then, so Eva did what she did--and liked--best: she reached forward to give Clerise a hug. "Well, I can't say that this place is particularly fun or safe, as you've obviously seen...but even if it's a little selfish of me to say, I'm glad that you're here. I never would have met you otherwise, right?" The girl grinned as she settled back, but not before nodding her head towards the cat plush in the other girl's arms.
"You can take that with you too, by the way. Sometimes it's nice to have a plushie to hug, even it's a little childish I guess, hehe."
