It was a cold and lonely sort of day. The early dawn frost had led into a frozen, still morning where not even the birds seemed to want to leave their nests. One buck trudged through the swamp, breaking the heavy silence by cracking of iced over mud puddles beneath his hooves. Consumed by Fire was looking breakfast. In the harsh winter he had seen many Kimeti turn to meat for sustenance, when they otherwise preached vegetarianism. Consumed could not bring himself to hunt. So he nibbled on the frozen leaves of the bushes, gaining little nourishment. Yet he was unconcerned and he continued onwards through the swamp, always moving resolutely forward.

Shuffling through the snow, I Fall Awake's thoughts were in warmer places. All around her she saw sunshine and grass, she could feel the muggy heat of the swamp pressing down upon her like a comforting blanket. Her mind was simply far, far away from the snow that was crunching under her hooves and the iced over patches that she was gliding over. It wasn't until her stomach protested with a tight clenching and a loud rumble that she was yanked away from her sunshine dreams.
Frowning, Daydreamer looked around the frost covered swamp and saw nothing. No animals dared come out of hiding to weather the threat of predators and the unforgiving environment and the plants around her were frozen so well, she knew that she would get nothing from these plants. Urged forward by the calls of her stomach, I Fall Awake walked gingerly along, sliding and crunching, while looking for a plant that wasn't too frozen to eat.
She scented him before she saw him, a fellow kin. And then, coming around a large tree, she saw a buck standing there, but more importantly, behind him was a bush that looked just thawed enough to eat. Moving forward on careful, measured steps, Daydreamer nodded in greeting to the buck. "Well met."
And then she was at the bush. She immediately began nibbling at the frozen leaves. There wasn't much nourishment to be had here but it would sate her hunger for now. It also let her mind wander though and for a split second the buck turned around and smiled, saying hello and offering his name.

Consumed barely seemed to react as the doe appeared, and he stopped in his tracks as she moved towards and then past him. Slowly he turned his head to watch her, spending one long ponderous moment thinking of nothing more interesting than the cold and how nice her pelt was. He blinked. It seemed remiss of him to simply wander off and so he did offer that smile; a slow, friendly look that easily reached his eyes. “Indeed.” He responded, quite late, to her first greeting. A bit of company in this cold time would be enjoyable. “I am Consumed By Fire.” The buck’s eyelids lowered, giving him a sleepy appearance. His name, as always recalled the roar of flames and arid taste of smoke that scorched the throat. A dream living endlessly in his heart. He looked sideways, away into the distance, seeking someone that was not there, and then looked back at the doe. Patiently he waited for either her name in return or a dismissal.

Daydreamer was mid-nibble, tasting only frost and no leaf, when the buck spoke. She paused, wondering at the double response she received only to realize that he had truly spoken. That gave her pause. And it was only when she realized how rude it was to keep the buck waiting so long in silence with no indication of her acceptance of his offering, that the doe turned to face the speaker who had so defied her expectations of silence and mere passing by. When she truly came to face him, she found herself taking in his appearance for the first time for when she had passed him by, he was merely a buck and the bush a much clearer prospect that expected nothing of her but for her to eat its leaves. Her mind may have chosen to give the buck words and a name, but she had not expected a real response.
Consumed by Fire. It was nothing like the name she had imagined for him, but then again there was no way for anykin to predict the names of others though it was very often that once known, a name is so wholly appropriate that it was hard to imagine anything else. And it was so with this buck, so much like the coals and dark cinders that remained after a blaze.
Shaking her head of these ponderings, it was in her power to smile, shy and awkward, but genuine all the same. She hoped he would not stay long, she was not easy for company, too stilted and scared to say much and she rather hoped that he had no expectations for she would never be able to rise to them. She rather liked staying low and steady, not too high to avoid the large fall. Daydreamer observed his far away look, as if he saw somekin that was not there and felt something within her understand that look. When she followed his gaze, she too saw kin that were not there and though he was now looking at her, she continued to see them walking and laughing, careening high above her space grounded in the swamp. At last she responded in an even voice, "I am I Fall Awake."
She wondered what he would say, wondered if he would stay or if this was the extent to which politeness required them to interact.

For a very long time he said nothing at all. These long pauses were typical of Consumed and while they drove many, faster minded kin to distraction; this doe at least did not seem overly put out by his mannerisms. He continued to smile at her, secretly enjoying the shy, smile she had given in return. “That is a nice name.” The buck said eventually, watching her with his lazy gaze. He made no move approach her any further, but neither did he turn to leave. If he’d had a mind to, this would have been the perfect time to remove himself politely, but he lingered. As if sensing her unease, he chose his words carefully, trying not to sound too pushy. “May we eat together?” He gave an honest, earnest look. Of course, Consumed would leave if she asked him to, but he need to at least voice his desire for companionship. Amorpheous Pretty terrible reply, but here we go. xD

Although she went back to nibbling on leaves, she faced him slightly at an angle so that she did not have to turn around again to speak with him politely. Continuing without much mind to forage for nice leaves on the bush, Daydreamer was not bothered by the long pause. If he stayed near, it would defy her expectations, and if he left, she would feel little sorrow for he would stay with her in her mind. After all, the less she expected the more joy she would feel when her expectations were surpassed and so, when the buck spoke again, she was pleased and offered another smile, this one just a little brighter than her last.
He had a soft gaze and he spoke little, which was fine by her. In her head they had already had a dozen conversations, but none of them included him complimenting her on her name. "Thank you. Yours is very nice as well, you look like your name."
Perhaps that was an odd thing to say, but there was very little she could do about it now that she had said it. She considered his request for a moment longer before acquiescing with a nod of her head and simple, "Of course."
In actuality, he need not ask. She neither owned this bush nor controlled him, he could eat where he pleased and if it so happened to be at the same bush she was eating at, there was no claim to it that she could assert over him to push him away even if she wanted to. As it was, she was pleasantly surprised that he wanted to stay, though she reminded herself to simply think of it as convenient.
