Hi, Im tuba_madness. I play tuba along with the sousaphone and I was wondering if anybody had any tips on making it easier on me to pay. My Sousaphone is made out of fiberglass and I do have a shoulder pad for it but it doesn't help ease the pain I get after games and parades. Usually after games I'm on the verge of crying because the pain is horrible. My band director and I have tried everything and I would really apperciate any tips anyone has to offer

Have you tried taking a towel and folding it to where it touches your sholder and kinda you back or hip? i dont know if will help. but it has seemedd to help our player. he buff though so the towel helps him and cant even really feel it on him. he knows it is there and he play it.

I know how you feel it is a pain my sophomore year i had sit out sometimes because it hurt so much.

Glad someone else is feeling the pain...Im trying to come up with a solution before the marching season so i dont die from the pain

you can either shift the bell to the left or right or have enough clothing articles underneath your marching uniform on top of your shoulder. it may or may not work but it helped ease the pain especially since i carry the brass ones. oh and be careful of buttons, if those get caught between your sousa and your shoulder it will hurt like hell.

When I was playing in high school, I just took it off for breaks while the football team was playing. in addition to a towel, you can also stuff a cheap sponge between the shoulder..very comfortable.
however, my biggest suggestion is just to get used to it. if you plan on playing the rest of your life like me, you'll have to learn to love the pain eventually smile

for real though, ice it and rest it after rehearsals, and get used to the pain. you DO get used to it after a while. a bag of frozen peas/corn works best for icing it- it conforms to your shoulder. maybe start lifting weights a little too- I started lifting for track and shotput not long after I started playing sousa, and then I signed up for strength training gym class. it helped a LOT. for me, six years since my first season on sousa (brass ones the whole time, no less), it still hurts sometimes, but it's a good pain, a pain of something I love. and really, shouldn't that be what matters?

I just recently started playing Sousa and I also played football as a smaller kid and I had problems with my ribs anyways long story short you can buy shirts for football that have protective padding on the shoulders here is a link http://m.underarmour.com/shop/us/en/boys-ua-5-pad-football-shirt/pid1241848-100 but this is an expensive one I got mine for 30$ anyways hope this helps.
