Niyx had never been one to prefer the company of humans. Well at least not many of them, they were simply such imperfect creatures in company in comparison to the likes of scrolls. Having been shoved into Weyr life by her thrice betweened curiosity the usually anti-social girl had been forced of late to cope with the large throngs of people that plagued the Weyr. Her only solstice from the constant noise coming in the form of the small archives the Weyr kept. It was hardly unusual for her to volunteer to help sort and clean them since she'd proven early on she was a careful hand with the more delicate scrolls and if she asked nicely some of the archivists would even give her old unwritten hides to be used for her sketches and notes.
And there were many things to sketch. Dragons, she had decided early on, were not slated under her list of ill-company. Though a few of the more noisy firelizards were. After all the giant cousins of the little flits were just so very fascinating that they could not help, but spark her imagination and inspire her to try her meager hand to draw them.
Which was why she was now outside during her break wandering along past a few of the wallows at a distance so as not to disturb in hopes of maybe catching one or two asleep or in a good enough mood not to mind a quiet observer.
Well that and the archivist had shoved her out of the archives spouting some nonsense about how she was young and should be gallivanting out in the sunshine. In his defense Niyx certainly was dressed for gallivanting. One might even call the young woman vain were her style far from the latest fashion out of Fort and more in line with the theatrical gather wear of a traveling troubadour. She was dressed from head to toe in bright red edged with gold though the colors were somewhat worn from use the outfit was clearly in excellent shape. Her loose baggy light honey yellow harem pants being caught and tugged by the wind as it came off from the lake giving the Weyr a nice breeze.
Casting blue gray eyes to her waist satchel she dug through it's contents checking to make sure she had a few clean hides and her charcoal encase she did find a potential model. It always did pay to be prepared and even if she couldn't find a dragon to draw there was always the chance that during her break she could stretch out in the sunshine and go through a few interesting calculations and theories she'd been working on on the side.

A well rested was a happy dragon; but J'len knew there was a line between a happy dragon and a lazy one. Hyweth might not have hit that point yet, but she certainly was close to it! J'len was leaned up against the sleeping crimson, working on a gift for J'nes. Her brownrider friend had quickly become one of Hyweth's favorite humans (he complimented her often enough for her approval). J'len rather thought she reflected the crimson's approval. "Lazy bones," she teased Hyweth, amused. "Sleeping again?"
No response. Hyweth was either too deeply asleep to have heard her rider, or the crimson was ignoring her. J'len fancied it was the latter. Moving a hand to gently stroke her crimson's soft hide, J'len took the time to glance around at her surroundings. Everything was familar. The crimson rider enjoyed tales of adventure as much as the next person, but the familarity was comforting.
There was a girl walking at a distance from them. She gave a wave. Best way to show one was friendly.

Niyx turned a corner and froze eyes widening at the sight of the large sleeping crimson. Oh true she's seen them from a good distance and up in the air, but the candidate had yet to be privy to seeing the rare atypical females from this distance. Better yet whom she assumed to be the crimson's rider was waving at her. Lifting a hand Niyx waved back using it as an excuse to trot over and say hello and possibly oggle the beautiful dragon up close.
"Good afternoon." Niyx began as she trotted up to the pair, her long legs carrying the lithe candidate to J'len with a few quick strides as she stopped before them giving a respectful bow. "If you don't mind my asking, is this beautiful crimson your lifepartner?" She inquired gazing respectfully up at Hyweth awe clear on her face.
"Such a lovely shade." Nyix murmured half under her breath fingers itching to trace the lines of the sleeping crimson's delicate wings upon the firm canvas of hide. After leaving her craft for candidacy Niyx had applied her same fascination for details and philosophical thought towards the handsome hidebound dragons. Thirsting for the knowledge of what made a dragon tick the same as would ponder the inner workings of a machine or clock.

Well, the stranger was polite enough that if Hyweth had been awake, she would have been quite pleased at the attention. As it was, J'len simply grinned at the girl and nodded. "Yes, I'm J'len, and this lazy lump is Hyweth," she gestured to her crimson with a smile. "Lovely day for a walk, but I fancy you had something else in mind?" She studied the candidate inquisitively.
"Budge up, Hyweth, we've got company. Won't you wake up enough to meet her?"
No.
So Hyweth was not asleep! Apart from the brief word from the crimson, as J'len looked to her dragon, she felt she should have known. As Niyx had admired her, the crimson had begun to move. Positioning herself in a way that the dragon must have felt displayed her natural beauty best.
"Don't mind her," J'len assured the candidate with a smile. "She's determined to sleep. Seems to think it'll make her look better. Getting all sandy so I'll have to give her another bath."

Nodding Niyx quirked her head slightly listening to J'len politely as she spoke waiting until she was sure the rider was done before piping up herself. "It's a pleasure to meet you both. My name is Niyx, I'm one of the newer candidates." She replied introducing herself with a quirk of a smile and a flourish of a hand dropping into a much more elegant theatrical bow then she had used before and flashing a winning smile at the two. "And at your service."
At the mention of weather though the girl paused and actually glanced up at the sky as if only just noticing what silly things the clouds might be doing today having been so lost to her own thoughts. "Oh yes, quite. Actually Crimsonrider J'len I wanted to ask if it wouldn't be too much of a bother and if you wouldn't mind if I perhaps draw Hyweth? She's just so prestigious looking and I've never been given the chance to sketch a crimson before." Nyix inquired her voice smooth and warm though it was rather surprising for a candidate to have quite such an expanded vocabulary as this one seemed to posses. Though the ink stains, charcoal smudges and the mild smell of dust and hide clinging to the girl hinted at her preference for scrolls over typically breathing company.
In fact everything about the brightly colored lanky and well worded woman with her odd goggles and distant gaze just screamed odd. If not harmless.

J'len pulled an awkward expression, seemingly uncertain about the elaborately spoken, well dressed candidate. . "Nice to meet you, Niyx," She wasn't altogether sure what to make of having Niyx's service--what did that mean? Was the candidate supposed to entertain her for the day? Prestigious? She'd never heard a dragon described with the use of that word. "I--well, sure. I'm sure Hyweth would enjoy that. She's vain enough as it is, though." She pointedly gestured to her crimson with a grin.
"I'd like to see it when you're done, if that's alright?" J'len asked, giving the candidate a nod to show that she had her permission. She slowly rose, stretching. "Well then, I'll get out of your way. I'll be in my weyr if you need me," she gestured to the nearby hut. "If you see a brown dragon, don't be alarmed. Hyweth fancies him," she gave a chuckle, perhaps to hint that she herself, fancied the brown's rider. "He's no trouble. Right then! Hyweth, I know you're awake. Niyx is going to draw you."
She must accurately catch my beauty. I will be most pleased.

"Oh I assure you she has plenty reason to be vain as beautiful as she is and no it will be no trouble to show it to you once I am done. If you'd like I'd happily make a copy of it for you at a later date to hang up." Niyx offered and with the rider's permission the lanky brightly colored candidate settled down in the sand pushing one stray strand of short copper hair out of her face to be tucked back behind her goggles.
"I'll be sure to keep an eye out for the brown and his rider. If I see them I'll direct them to your weyr Ma'am." She replied with a nod and a smile as she dug through her waist pouch pulling out a clean hide and a stick of charcoal before settling the pouch over her legs to lay the hide over it and began to sketch Hyweth's pose hoping to get that done first lest the crimson move and she have to start all over.
Once she'd accurately captured the dragon's pose she relaxed somewhat and began to go in for the details of the beautiful creature. "Your rider J'len said you were awake. If so I'd like you to know you have absolutely beautiful neckridges. The boning of your face is a little bit difficult to capture with mere charcoal because it's so well defined, but I will strive to do my best." Niyx spoke, talking more for the sake of the noise or something to do instead of chew on her bottom lip as she worked. Back at the hall one of the journeyman who'd overseen her had had a little green firelizard Niyx had liked to chat with while she worked. The green often used the apprentice as a napping spot due to the long hours the woman would sit and work where as hers was always around all that noisy machinery. As such it wasn't uncommon for the girl to have been found with a green stretched wide over her shoulders fast asleep.
Though not much of a talker Niyx found she sorely missed the lazy green's silent companionship.
