[ Ownership ]
Adrian Karlet shuffled down the slushy sidewalk towards the open-air market at the end of the block. He usually did his shopping in one of the larger supermarkets, with a car and a few assistants to lug groceries around. Today, he was by himself, on foot, and looking for some fresh, local produce. He used to sell his catch in this very market, but he hadn't needed to for some time. Most of his fish, nowadays, stayed frozen in the mansion's big freezer. He didn't need to stay out on the frozen lake for hours in order to catch enough fish to sell.
He'd lived with Kanth for over a year, but they rarely saw each other. Ever since he'd moved into the mansion, he hadn't had to worry so much about his finances. It wasn't long after that that he began adopting critters and kids to take care of. He had continued fishing until he found a better paying job. Now, even his kids were starting to find jobs of their own. Since they'd been raised to be responsible, the eldest were starting to donate a little of their pay checks to paying for household necessities.
The Karlet wing of the mansion was beginning to get quite full, what with so many kids being taken in and requiring their own rooms. Adrian also had to take their diets and preferences into account, and be sure to provide lots of different foods to appeal to everyone.
Thus, the constant need for fresh food.
Adrian started poking through the items for sale at one booth. He bought a few things as he vendor-hopped and had been lost in thought for several minutes before he was jolted back into awareness by a bellow of, "Stop thief!"
He thought he saw a blur out of the corner of his eye and reached out, catching a small figure around the middle and swinging it around. It struggled against him, and he yelped as several points of sharp pain dug into his arm. He pulled the figure against him and looked down. Two small gray and brown ears poked out of light brown tresses, and a long, gray and brown striped tail thrashed against their legs.
The critter yowled and continued struggling after a dead fish fell from its hands to the ground at their feet.
Adrian held tight. "Easy," he said, "easy..."
A big burly booth owner approached them, panting heavily. "You... little... BRAT!" he yelled, drawing back to strike at the thief.
Adrian turned quickly to block the blow, wincing as claws dug further into his arm.
"That's the second time the little b*****d has stolen from me, this week!" The man hissed. He leaned down and got in the creature's face. "I'm gonna teach you a lesson you'll never forget!"
It shuddered against Adrian and its struggles weakened.
"You'll do no such thing," Adrian announced.
"He stole from me, and needs to pay!"
Adrian leaned down and whispered into one of the ears. "You don't have any money, do you?"
The critter shook its head.
"I didn't think so." He stood up again, facing the vendor. "If it's that big a deal, I'll pay for whatever he stole."
"THAT'S NOT THE POINT!" the man howled. "Having someone else pay for his meal won't teach him to not steal!" They'd already drawn a small crowd of curious on-lookers, and several nodded in agreement.
"I'm well aware of that, my good sir," Adrian said flatly. "I've raised several kids of my own. Hurting them physically will do no good."
"The hell it won't," the man hissed, continuing to glare at the creature.
It had finally stopped wiggling, but clung to Adrian, seeing him as the apparent lesser of two evils.
Annoyed, Adrian tightened his jaw. "Well, then, if you won't accept my payment, consider it your own loss." He turned and walked away, carrying the thief under his arm. Though the man began swearing at him as he left, no one bothered to follow them.
Once they were a couple of blocks away, Adrian noticed that the figure at his side was still shaking. "Don't run away," he said as he stopped and loosened his grip. He then turned the creature around to get a good look at it.
Deep blue eyes blinked up at him. It was definitely a felinoid -- it could stand like a human, but was distinctly feline in appearance. He couldn't tell what gender it was. It was also quite short, the top of its head barely reaching his waist. Aside from the soft layer of gray fur, its only protection against the cold was a small pair of khaki-colored shorts.
"Aren't you cold?" he asked.
It nodded, arms wrapped around itself. It had been warm while it was close to Adrian, but now without that source of heat, the air seemed much colder.
"Don't run," Adrian said again, removing his jacket and helping the feline slip into it.
The critter shuddered again, but Adrian heard a purring noise as it curled up inside the coat. The coat was so big, it nearly swallowed the little cat. "Thank... you..." it said. Its voice was soft, light, and rumbling due to the purr.
"You're welcome," Adrian said as he did his best to ignore the cold. "Where do you live?"
It shrugged. "Where...ever..."
"Mmhmm... you don't have a place to live."
The felinoid glanced away.
"It's nothing to be ashamed of," Adrian tried to assure it. He couldn't help but reach out to scratch those ears. "There was a time where I didn't have a place to stay, either."
The purr increased in volume and its head tilted into his touch.
"So, if you want," Adrian said, getting to the point, "you can come stay with me. I've a nice place, now, and I have a lot of kids that I take care of. There's always room for one more."
Those blue eyes met his again, and the purr seemed to pause for a moment. "Don't... belong to you," it murmured.
"No, you don't. You don't have to. I'll take care of you, but I won't own you."
This was met with a frown. "But... want to be owned and taken care of."
Adrian looked thoughtful. "You'll belong to a family," he pointed out.
"Owe you," it said with a shake of its head. "You saved me."
"You don't owe me anything."
"Do!"
Adrian frowned. "Well, you can come home with me, anyway, whether you owe me or not."
"Own me?" it repeated.
"No, I won't own you. You--"
"Own me!" it insisted.
"You won't be a pet," Adrian continued. "None of my kids are pets."
"Own me~" it whined.
He sighed, holding a hand to his forehead. "Alright," he said. "Fine. If it'll make you feel better." He reached into the pocket of his jacket and pulled out a long, pale blue ribbon. He had worn it earlier that day, when he'd paid a visit to some... friends. "Chin up," he said, and the feline obeyed. He wrapped the ribbon around its neck and tied it off with a bow.
"There," he said once he was done. "Is that okay?"
The critter reached up to finger the ribbon and the purr began again. It looked quite pleased. "Feel owned," it said.
"Good, that was the intention." Adrian then asked, "I don't suppose you have a name?"
It looked thoughtful, drawing the coat closer around itself. "R... Rayen," it finally said.
"Rayen? That's a cool name." Adrian nodded. "Are you ready to go home?"
"Home?" Rayen echoed.
"Yes, home."
"Home..."
Seeing as how the felinoid had no shoes and had probably been wandering the snowy streets barefoot, Adrian picked Rayen up and carried him the rest of the way to the mansion.

[ Accusation and Exploration ]
"Give it back, you little b*****d!" came the shriek from the dining room.
Adrian held a hand to his head. It was too early in the morning to deal with Hana's attitude. "Hana?" he called as he headed down the staircase and into the dining room. "What's the problem?"
Hana was standing beside the table, fuming. A quick glance under the table confirmed that the house's newest resident was in attendence. He blinked his big blue eyes at Adrian, a hair scrunchy hanging from his mouth.
"That boy is a theif," the tiger-girl hissed, tail thrashing behind her. "It's mine and he took it without asking!"
"I see," Adrian said as he dropped down to a squat. "Rayen?"
The kitten kept up the innocent look.
"Don't make me crawl under there," Adrian threatened weakly -- he still felt half-asleep. "Come out and give your sister back her scrunchy."
Rayen winced and quickly obeyed, squeezing out between the chairs and kneeling at Hana's feet, the fuzzy object still hanging from his mouth.
Hana's lip curled in distaste as she took the object by the tips of two fingers, eyeing the wet spot in the fabric.
"Rayen," Adrian repeated in a deep tone.
Rayen flinched again, his ears flattening against his head. He turned to look up at his new guardian.
"Do not take things without asking. You don't need to steal; if you ask, most anyone will give you what you need. Next time, there'll be consequences."
Rayen nodded, eyes down as he settled at Adrian's feet, nuzzling at his knee.
"Disgusting," Hana hissed again, turning and stomping from the room.
Adrian sighed and scratched behind Rayen's ears. "You don't have to live on the floor, either," he murmured as he stood and offered his hand.
Rayen took it, and Adrian helped him to his feet. The felinoid was a little unsteady, leaning against the man for support as he got used to standing. He stood as high as Adrian's waist.
"There you go," Adrian said, encouraging him. Once Rayen had his balance, Adrian stepped away, letting him stand on his own.
Rayen stood there, glancing around himself. This caused him to wobble, and Adrian held his arm out to keep him from falling. Rayen recovered and took a step forward. And another. And another.
"There, that's not so bad, is it?" his guardian murmured with a smile.
The kitten shook his head, displacing the silken strands of hair that fell into his face. He continued walking around the room, and then returned to Adrian's side.
"Very good," Adrian said, the smile turning into a grin.
Rayen smiled back, a sort of shy, awkward smile.
"Would you like a hug?"
He nodded, and Adrian leaned down and wrapped his arms around him. Rayen clung back, nuzzling under Adrian's chin and purring.
Adrian nuzzled back, placing a kiss in the kitten's hair before he let him go. "Stay out of trouble, okay?" he said. "We don't have too many rules here, but respect the ones we have and you'll be just fine."Quote: Rayen has settled into the house fairly well, except for a few... problems.
To begin with, he's not really a he. He's a hermaphrodite -- bi-gendered. I figured it out when I tried to give him a bath. I won't go into details.
You know those gender-neutral pronouns like sie, hir, and whatever? That's all bullshit and makes my head hurt. So, until he gets old enough to decide what to call himself, we're referring to him as a he. The others don't know that he's bi-gendered, yet, though. I figured it wasn't really any of their business.
Hana took an immediate dislike to him. After all, how dare I bring in another felinoid into this house? She needs to get over herself.
The rest of the kids and critters haven't played with him much. He stays off to the side and watches them, for the most part.
He has made a couple of friends outside the house. Mei Long, a good friend of mine, loves Rayen's cuteness and gave him his first taste of chocolate. And then there's Benjamin, another kitten. Benjamin just changed homes, but seems friendly enough when he and Rayen are together. It's cute to watch them play.
At first, he was adamant about calling me "master." I think I've managed to convince him to call me Adrian, or some form of it. He may think of himself as a pet, but me being called master is just too weird, in any context.
Also, I think I've finally gotten him up off the floor. I can't tell if he walks on all-fours because of personal preference or what. He at least knows how to walk on two feet; that much I could tell, earlier, when I had him walking around the dining room.
He's very sensitive to tones of voice, but just as sensitive to positive feedback. I'm trying to draw him out of his shell a little bit at a time. He doesn't speak very well, and often slips into meows, if he makes any noise at all. He seems content to just sit and watch you, as if expecting you to entertain him. Or, I suppose, watching you is entertaining enough, for him. He's an odd one, to be sure. That's why he'll fit in so well here.

He looks the kitten over once, relieved to see he has no such cuts* Rayen: *eyes the cut and thinks of Shahar's tail* Mrrr... should'a bit it off... Ben: *chuckles, and nuzzles Rayen* That would have been nice. We'll get him next time. Ben: If he even comes back. *smirks* Rayen: *nods and nuzzles back* Hope he stays away. Ben: Yes. *purrs weakly* Rayen: *purrs* ... Tired, too? Ben: Mmm...*sits, pulling Rayen close with a light sigh* Rayen: *settles in Ben's lap, leaning against his chest* Ben: *smiles, getting comfortable, letting Rayen do so as well*

"Ardian~?" came the soft call that echoed off the walls of the hallway. Rayen's bare feet padded against the rug that ran the length of the floor as he looked into rooms, searching for his guardian. The silence in the eastern wing of the mansion was unnerving for the felinoid who was used to busy streets and the rowdy Karlet crew. Everyone seemed to have disappeared.
When he peeked inside the bathroom, he stopped short with a squeak. Soco, the housekeeper, looked up from where he was scrubbing the tub, and the two blinked at each other for a moment.
"Hey there, kitty," Soco finally said with a smile. "What's the matter?"
Rayen glanced up and down the hallway. "Ardian?" he asked.
"Adrian?" Soco corrected. "I'm sure he's around here somewhere."
"Oh," Rayen said, watching as Soco went back to work. "What ya doin'?"
"Scrubbing all the dirt and scum off the side of the tub," Soco replied, showing him the sudsy sponge in his hand. "That way it'll be nice and shiny and clean."
Rayen made a face at the strong smell of the cleaner. "Scrubby?" he repeated. He then hesitated a moment before asking, "I help?"
"Sure, if you want to," Soco said. He made room for the little cat to kneal beside him and pulled a spare rubber glove out of his supply bucket. "Wear this so that the cleaning stuff doesn't hurt you," he said, helping Rayen to pull the glove on.
Rayen flexed his hand, unused to the strange feel of the rubber. He took the sponge when Soco offered it to him and leaned over the side of the tub. He rubbed at the area where there were already bubbles. "Like this?"
The teen nodded. "Yup, that's right. Keep going and scrub that spot, too." He pointed to an area outside the suds and Rayen moved to scrub it away.
"Good morning," came a voice from the doorway. The two looked up and Adrian smiled at them. "What'cha doing, Rayen?"
"Helpin'," the felinoid replied, turning back to his work for a moment as if to emphasize. He then looked up at Soco. "'m good help, ya?"
"Yep, he's a good helper," Soco echoed, ruffling Rayen's hair with his clean hand. "And a cute one, at that."
"I'm sure," Adrian said. "But I'm afraid I'm going to have to drag your helper away for a bit."
"Awww~" Rayen cried, giving his guardian his most pitiful pout and sad kitty-cat look.
The look didn't phase Adrian. "Time for lessons," he said, holding his hand out to help Rayen up.
Soco tugged Rayen's glove off for him. "Don't worry, there'll be more cleaning to do when you're done," he assured the kitten.
"'Kay," Rayen said, still pouting even as he took Adrian's hand and followed him out of the room. He turned and gave Soco a little wave.
Soco returned it and went back to work as Adrian and Rayen left. He paused, and then held a hand to his nose as he sneezed -- hard.
"Oh, Christ," he murmured. "Don't tell me I'm allergic to cats..."
