The Lighten Up Club!
Lose some weight or simply start eating healthier! Come on in and join us at any time. We're here to cheer each other on and commiserate when needed.
Different methods of getting healthy work for different people. For example. If I had to count calories I would go insane. But for others, it's a really good way to stay aware of how much they are eating. I do ask that people stay away from weird fad diets that help you lose quickly but don't actually change your eating habits. Please use a method that you can sustain indefinitely. Small changes over time can be sustained much easier than starving yourself a few weeks and then gaining it all back.
This is not to embarrass anyone so if you really feel uncomfortable putting your weight in here then don't list it. Just fill out the other information and record your actual weight offline at home.
Weigh in Days: You will weigh yourself once per week and record it (here or at home). It's good to post in here as often as you can but at minimum once per week on your weigh in day. The day you join will determine when yours is --> If you joined on Monday, then every Monday will be your weigh in day. When you first join, fill this out at the beginning of your post:Why I decided to join:Current Weight:Goal Weight:How I feel (mentally/physically):My method/plan for losing weight:Exercise (optional):On weigh in days, fill this out:Current Weight:Weight change since last week:How I feel (mentally/physically):Exercise (optional): How did the week go?In between weigh in days just post like normal. Do share how things are going during the week and if you're having a good day or a particularly tough day. This is when we can really gripe about how hard it is or cheer each other on. Don't get too discouraged if you fall off the wagon. Just start again whenever you are ready.

Why I decided to join: because yeegads! I must have been in denial over some pounds I gained. I want to get rid of some of my bad eating habits.
Current Weight:152 Goal Weight:120 How I feel: disappointed in myself for gaining but motivated to try fixing this! Physically I'm feeling pretty good but somewhat bloated. Method: I think I eat pretty healthy at mealtime but my downfall is snacking throughout the day and too many dessert type things. I'm going to avoid eating between meals except for one healthy snack at 3pm. And I'm going to cut way down on sugar.

Alright... Day 2 for me and all is well so far. I'm a little lonely in here 4laugh !
I do already feel extra hungry. I'm not sure if that's just because I'm focused on this or because I really was eating so much more by just extra snacking and not paying attention to it.

Why I decided to join: Since being back in Canada I've been noticed that I've started to gain back some of the weight I lost while in Bhutan. I think I've gained about 20lbs since New Year's. Current Weight: ~250 lbs. Goal Weight: 200 lbs. How I feel (mentally/physically): Today, really good. Recently, horrible. I once got as big as 300 lbs and I never want to get up there again. I feel "less fat" if I've been active on any given day, so it's totally a mental thing! My method/plan for losing weight: Starting this week, hopefully, I'm going to try and attend the Aquafit classes at the local pool 2-3 times a week. I'll try to go on a brisk walk for at least half an hour a day on the days I don't make it to the pool. I'm also trying to eat lots of salads, vegetables, whole grains, and avoid processed foods and soda. Exercise (optional): See above! I'm just going to start with Aquafit for now, because if I try to throw myself into a really ambitious workout plan it's not going to stick.

Even if it's just the two of us here, it'll be really great to have someone to bounce ideas off of, and give/receive sympathy, etc. I find eating healthy and feeling satisfied is a really big challenge! If I eat something fatty or greasy I feel gross, but if I just eat something healthy like a salad or carrot sticks or an apple then I feel hungry and am staring at the chips all the same. sweatdrop What kinds of snacks do you like? Something that I do sometimes is slice up an apple and dip it in peanut butter. Just about the healthiest substitute for something sweet that I can think of.

For me at least, I think sugar (and other simple carbs like white bread) is much more of a problem than fat. I do want to avoid hydrogenated fats though. OH! And YAY! I'm not alone here any more (((((hugs for Sammirah)))

So I usually avoid them if I need something filling. I keep trying to cut down on sugar or fat; I would love to be able to cut sugar out all together, but there keep being special occasions like people's birthdays and such where I think oh, it's a birthday I can't not have cake! And then I just forget I'm not going to eat junk. neutral Today was my sister's birthday and I had like three pieces of cake! Red velvet with white chocolate buttercream icing. And ALL the candy from my goodie bag. xp

This way I'm not completely denying myself - only delaying gratification for a bit. lol I think I'll make Tuesday my treat day since my book club always falls on a Tuesday. We always have treats there so I can let myself indulge a little. I suppose I can change the day when I know there is a birthday or something like that coming up.

gaia_nitemareleft Why I decided to join: Current Weight: 174 lbs (79kg) Goal Weight: 154 lbs (70kg) Height: 5.5 feet (170cm) How I feel (mentally/physically): Dissapointed that this seems to be the one thing in my life that I can't "will it to happen". Everyone says that I go through solid stone if needed, but this seems to be the only thing where I lack that capability. My method/plan for losing weight: More exercise and eating more veggies. Exercise (optional): Wii Fit Plus, Crosstrainer, biking, walks On weigh in days, fill this out: Current Weight: 174 lbs (79kg) Weight change since last week: 0 How I feel (mentally/physically): I'm stuck! Gah! Exercise (optional): Wii Fit Plus, sit-ups How did the week go? Relatively good, I managed to stay off from the treats and exercise but nothing has happened to my weight! gaia_angelright

gaia_nitemareleft I wanna do these on separate posts so sorry for double posting. Oohkay, finally had some time to set this up. I was actually bit busy with my exercises so sorry that I didn't join earlier. smile Oh and I added height to my start up measures because I think that also determines your weight and the situation you are in. First off I'll trow you a challenge: http://www.twohundredsitups.com/test.html I challenge you to at least try this one out or the other programs that are in the site. It's really easy, effective and the results are mind bogging especially if you start from zero like me. I have the same problem that I tend to snack or over eat if I forget to eat well. My solution to this is that I make a sandwich for me for the afternoon. Note that the bread isn't fluffy white sugary stuff, it's rye bread that has lots of fibers and is good for you. This has dramatically decreased my snacking in the afternoons. Some times instead of the sandwich I might have non sugary yoghourt or other milk products with nuts and dried fruits. (the translations are odd and I don't think you have them there since it's a Finnish thing xd ) If you want to feel fuller longer time, I'd advice to eat more protein and fibers and make sure that the time between dinners doesn't grow too long. Proteins and fibers "fill you up" more. It doesn't need to be meat. It can also be cheese, nuts, certain veggies like beans, but you will feel hungry fast if you eat just salad, because plain salads are nutrient poor. I'm not a fan of Atkins diet, even though my advice would seem like it. Proteins is not same as meat and especially it is not same as fat. It's true that sugar and white flours is not good for you in large quantities, but I'm skeptic that stuffing your self with bacon is any better. Overall, I hate diets. I think they are waste of time since the weight comes back with extra. Only thing that lasts is a permanent change in lifestyle and eating habits. gaia_angelright

Hi Lily, welcome! Yeah, good point about the height. I'm 6 ft tall, which is why my goal weight is larger than others. whee The last time I got down to 200 lbs my mother told me I should stop losing weight because I was looking too skinny. xd I know there's no such thing as "big-boned" but I do have a rather solid frame. Lily, what's the Wii fit like? I got a Wii for Christmas, and I've been considering buying the Wii fit for it, I just don't have a lot of money and I don't want to spend that much on something I won't commit to. Do you find it effective? Is it fun?

Why I decided to join: I hope that maybe it will keep me conscious of my goal and help me keep at it until I physically start to feel better. Current Weight: 255 lbs Goal Weight: 165 lbs How I feel (mentally/physically): Nervous, depressed, and unsettled mentally. Sore, old, frail, fatigued physically. My method/plan for losing weight: Gradually increased exercise, reduced food intake, and increased water intake. I am also trying a diet alteration of the following: No artificial sweeteners, no added salt or sugar to anything (adding while cooking is fine, but once it is plated, that's it), and no fluid dairy (using coconut or almond milk in place of milk or cream). Exercise (optional): Right now I am up to 2 miles brisk walking per day to try to extend my stamina enough to do more.

Welcome Lily and Exxos! It's nice to have a couple more people in here smile
@Lilly - I completely agree with you on the Atkins diet and other very food specific diets in general. Those might help you short term but if you can't sustain it forever how are you going to keep the weight off when you go back to your previous way of eating?
Last night I was making dinner for the family and I had to stop myself from nibbling things as I made it.

gaia_nitemareleft Wow, you are tall! Ah, the wii... well it's good if you have the inner strength to do it and if you are slightly perfectionist/competist. I was able to keep it up for a long time and it is fun and in a way effective, but it requires you really wanting to play with it in order it to work. I lost the interest to it during the summer when I rater went outside than be inside the house. Now I'm picking it up again. For me it works since I don't have time and it's bit difficult for me to get into any gym and I always want to do bit better and get bit better score in the game. What it is lacking is good upper body exercises but it's really good if you want to strengthen your lower and middle parts. Also the weight measures and versatile stuff especially in the Fit Plus is good. If you have time and access to a gym, then that's definitely more effective but if you want to increase your daily activity level, then the Fit Plus is good for that. If it's the effectiveness you want, then I'd say save up your money and buy some weights or something. If you want to have fun and break some sweat in the same time, then especially the Fit Plus is good for that. Also, there are few other games that use the balance board that is super fun (like raving rabbids). Gah, my weight has been circling the same amount for two weeks now and it's frustrating! I've been trying to keep an eye on my meal sizes and have the afternoon snacks and all, so I don't gorge everything down on the evening but still. On days like this I feel like giving up since I already sort of like how I look. It's the need to have more energy and wanting to have healthier body that is my motivator for this... but is it enough? gaia_angelright
