How long was he supposed to be without 'strenuous activities,' as they had phrased it? He didn't remember distinctly, but he knew that it was much too long to be sensible. It was his right arm that had been damaged, after all, not his left. His dominant arm remained quite usable, and it was that thought that brought Luke to Camphoreon's large beach in the early afternoon.

Though warm weather had overtaken much of Kodo, it was far from summer, and the population of the beach reflected the season. Those who had made the visit sought shelter in nearby shops to escape the bitterly cold sea breeze, leaving great spans of the area devoid of human life. It was a nice change of scenery from the park and the grassy outskirts, and a jacket, paired with the promise of physical activity, warded off the cold.

Luke stood upon the shores in one such jacket, his sword grasped in his left hand in preparation for one such promise. Team Rocket wouldn't take time off to wait for his arm to heal to its full capabilities, and so he wouldn't take time off from practicing and ensuring that he was ready to defend. His now-damaged right arm, usually used for the purpose of balance, remained firmly at his side out of a physical instinct, and his swing was awkward for it. He swung nonetheless, though, each lunge just slightly more graceful than the last.

Bitterly cold was a relative term. Wandering along the sand munching an apple Dith felt perfectly comfortable in just a shirt, though to be fair it was a fairly thick shirt. The morning had been pretty strenuous both for him (running, weights, sit ups, push ups, etc) and for his pokemon (running, and training battles against one another). Feeling that they all needed a break he had made his way down here about twenty minutes ago; everyone liked the beach after all!... Well, other than Teazer, but the Liepard seldom seemed pleased about anything and she hadn't asked to go back to her pokeball so she couldn't be half as miserable as she was making out with her little mincing steps and occasional hisses at the sand under her paws.

Up ahead of him, his two Espeon, and his grumpy Liepard, Dolly was racing against nothing in particular. Abruptly however the Ponyta skidded to a halt and gave a loud whinny of greeting before trotting onward. Raising his eyebrows slightly Dith shaded his eyes and peered into the distance; somebody they knew?...

Yes.

That was Luke, apparently swinging his sword around. Dith Frowned and broke into a jog; what did the kid think he was doing? He was supposed to be taking it easy, but apparently he knew better than trained medical professionals. It would be best not to approach this with confrontation though, that would just make Luke even less likely to listen than he would otherwise be. It was however somewhat difficult not to just give the boy a light smack over the head and tell him he was an idiot.

Once he was within reasonable earshot Dith called; "Hi Luke, didn't expect to see you out here!" You damned idiot.

The sudden voice commanded a pause, and Luke lowered his sword and half-turned to see who had called his name, his breathing only slightly labored from the previous exercise. He recognized the individual's form with ease, and he straightened his posture slightly in preparation for the conversation he anticipated to follow. "Hey," he greeted simply - he didn't know Dith all that well, and though he knew tell of him to be generally positive, he was still rather uncomfortable with the unfamiliarity. "Yeah, not really beach weather, I guess. The park's getting kind of stale, though, so why not."

Dith jogged to a halt, patting Dolly's head as the stocky little ponyta whiffled at his hand. "Hi...." Well there was really no way around being critical. Dith sighed slightly and rubbed his forehead. "Luke, you know you shouldn't be doing that right? You could easily make it worse for yourself if you trip or something, which is quite possible with it throwing your balance off."

It was most often kids who acted like this, especially male kids; they thought they knew everything, that they were invincible, that it wouldn't happen to them and certainly not twice. Treat a drunk (generally underage) teen for an injury one weekend and the next they were back out there and he had to fix them all over again when the paramedics dropped them off in the emergency room with twisted limbs or flowing blood. There just seemed to be a lack of connection in a lot of young male brains between actions and consequences; it got tiring sometimes and he'd never been surprised when he'd seen colleagues burn out. It was hard to keep on taking care of people who simply refused to take care of themselves.

Luke frowned, his stance autonomously shifting into a slight aggression. If he'd wanted to hear that, he would have stayed at the hospital in Sandalwood - or at least around Camphoreon where Guy would undoubtedly tell him something similar. He refused eye contact, turning a disaffected gaze to the horizon. "I'm not gonna trip," his defiance manifested in his tone. "And even if I did, I'd fall in sand."

You are a complete and utter idiot, young sword-boy.

Dith sighed again and pushed his fingers through his hair, or at least as far as they would go before they got tangled in the thick curls. "I know you're not planning to trip," he said after a pause choosing to just ignore the slightly aggressive manner for now, "and maybe you won't, but is it really worth the risk to start off your training again just a little earlier? Doesn't matter what you fall on when you've got a fracture, it's not going to be a good outcome no matter what the surface."

Boys!... Actually, scratch that, Dani had just the same kind of attitude although she had a different manner with it than Luke did. The pair of them were just so reckless sometimes, though he knew Luke far less well than Dani as the youth hadn't even spent very much time with them on their travels. He had to wonder why that was, why the red-head was so reluctant to be around them. Lecturing him like this probably wasn't going to make the kid any keener to know him but he couldn't say nothing; sometimes doing the right/sensible thing led to you becoming unpopular, and that was just something to put up with in life.

He returned his full attention to Dith, still frowning, "Well what's the other option? I wait around and do nothing for however long and then mess up when Team Rocket attacks because I haven't been practicing?" He breathed a short, frustrated sigh, lowering green eyes to the sand. "I can risk the small chance of getting hurt now from practicing versus the guarantee of getting hurt later from not being able to to defend myself properly - or that someone else will get hurt because I wasn't prepared. I'm not just gonna stand around."

Kids.

Kids were difficult.

Dith rubbed his neck, making himself remember that Luke was a kid and thus could be expected to be a complete twit a fair portion of the time. "Luke, generally Team Rocket aren't going to be challenging us to single combat; you'd be better off resting as you're supposed to be and working on your pokemon, that's where we'll be tested the most and is most vital for us. If the rockets decide to deal with us personally rather than through their pokemon I imagine they'll pick guns over edged weapons." Frankly he would prefer it if these kids weren't waving swords around at all, but he was prepared to accept any edge - har har - they could get over the enemy organization. He was not, however, prepared to let Luke risk himself just to start practicing again a few weeks earlier.

"You're good," he soothed, "very good. A few weeks off from training isn't going to be the end of the world Luke парень."

"It's not about being ready for single combat or whatever," he said, disregarding for the time being that Asch certainly carried a bladed weapon. "It's about reflexes, stamina, and responding to the environment. I can't even command pokemon well if I can't do that." Add to that, he just felt like a hypocrite standing around telling his pokemon to work hard when all he was doing was telling them what to do. It was frustrating, and it make him feel useless. He was through with feeling useless - that was why he was taking his swordsmanship so seriously now. He hated feeling so hesitant and inept all the time.

The foreign word went without acknowledgment for its lack of recognition, but the rest of the words were received with a distinctly bittern disposition. That bitterness, however, was directed more at himself than at Dith's encouragement. "It's the only thing I'm good at, and I'm not even that good. I don't want to keep losing to Asch." Not physically nor mentally. He was beyond sick of having his confidence stripped away so easily by his brother's cruel words.

"I can understand that," Dith replied gently, "I agree with you in fact - which may be obvious - but sometimes you have to give yourself a break whether you like it or not. Trust us to watch your back until your arm's healed and you can get back on form, eh?" Easier said than done, for Luke at least it seemed; he was an independent young man in many ways which was to be admired... but it also led to stubbornness and either that or some other issue also seemed to make him struggle to trust anyone easily.

The apparently low self esteem couldn't be helping any.

"I don't claim to know you well, but I'm sure that can't be true Luke," Dith went on with a shake of his head, sitting down in the sand so that he was looking up at the young man rather than down on him. "I'm sure if I asked Guy he could tell me all sorts of things you are good at, as well as sword fighting. Not being as good as one person at something doesn't mean you aren't good all the same."

Luke wasn't terribly comfortable with how much more easily he and Dith could meet one another's gazes now that the much taller man was seated, and he turned partway to the side to direct his focus elsewhere, his hand tensing and relaxing intermittently on the hilt of the sword he still held. "I don't claim to know myself all that well either," he said, though not without hesitation in the words, "but I know when I'm not good at something. I hate feeling useless. Hate it. A month's too long to just stand around and let everyone else do my part for me." Not that he even knew what 'his part' was supposed to be. Everything was frustrating, with or without taking the stupid arm into account.

Poor kid.

Dith combed his fingers through the ends of his hair absently, removing some of the tangles that had accumulated throughout the day so far. These problems weren't problems that could be sorted with a few kind words and a firm shoulder clap - Luke did not seem like the type for hugs - they were the sort of problems that took time to sort out.

"I understand. I hate to feel useless too, but having your armed broken doesn't make you useless. You can still train your pokemon, and once you're healed then you can work on yourself." He doubted this was going to get through. He couldn't let Luke carry on though, so he was just going to have to out-stubborn him, or think of something really ingenious to say, or pick him up and carry him off. Somehow the couldn't see the last one being appreciated, or ending well.

He was starting to run out of things to say without repeating himself, but he was far from prepared to give in. It wasn't as though he didn't understand Dith's point of view, and he even understood that his company was probably (definitely) right, but nothing that was said could remove the feeling of helplessness - of being completely disarmed - that he had felt standing in the hospital room being hailed as a coward and having nothing to say in rebuttal. The memory was disheartening, and he deflated visibly as a result, fingers loosening around the sword's hilt before returning the blade to its sheath. "Fine, whatever."

Phew.

Dith relaxed and offered Luke a slight smile. "Thank you." Was there anything he could do to make him feel better? Probably not a lot given the youth didn't seem to trust him that much. Well, maybe a stupid story would at least give him a smirk.

"I broke my wrist roller-skating down a steep hill once," Dith began, "should have been old enough to know better but it sounded like a good idea at the time. I was told to try not to do anything too stupid until the cast came off, but my group of drunk friends decided we should all climb over a big metal fence to get into a gig one of them had got tickets for us all to see, but turned out to be fakes. I don't know what my excuse for going along with it was, I was sober, but again I suppose it seemed like a good idea at the time. I was doing just fine climbing with one hand until I got to near the top, where I managed to get the cast stuck between two of the fence slats or whatever you call them. Hung on there for about ten minutes waiting for the drunk friends to come up with a plan to get me down, eventually realised that as a temporary fence it wasn't that strong and managed to bent the slats with my good arm and one foot. Of course, I then fell off the fence backwards and gave myself a mild concussion." Grinning ruefully Dith shrugged his shoulders. "I think it's a minor miracle that I survived some of the brilliant ideas I or my friends had over the years. If anyone ever told you med students were smart, they were lying to you."

Luke listened - half-heartedly, perhaps, but listening nonetheless - to the story Dith told. It sounded vaguely like a lesson, 'I was young and brazen once and now I'm telling you about it so you don't repeat the things I did,' and so the boy nearly dismissed it with a huff, but a thought struck him as the anecdote reached it's conclusion. "Do you get hurt like that often?" he asked, referencing the mishap at the contest alongside the two injuries Dith had mentioned while sharing his story.
