Just out of curiosity, what is everyone here reading right now? Or what are you favorite books? And WHY. D=< You can't just give me a title because I might not be familiar with it.

Why do you like your favorite books?

Currently I'm re-reading How The Universe Got Its Spots. emotion_awesome It's a book about determining the size and global topology (the shape, basically) of the universe, using cosmic background radiation.

<.<;

okay, I realize this makes me a nerd. SHUT UP. emotion_donotwant

Anyway, I mostly like it because in addition to being informative and following the studies of a fairly well known astrophysicist, she uses a lot of personal anecdotes to explain her theories. The whole thing reads almost like a series of letters to her mother, but also presents a lot of really cool information about the cosmos, in a unique and honestly really entertaining, clever way. It's a great book. =3

I am currently reading Oedipus. But only because my English teacher is making me. It's about a guy with a curse and he ends up being his own step-father and the brother-father of his own children. So in general, he marries his mom and has kids with her. He then ends up gouging his own eyes out with her dress pins..... anyhow..... moving on......

One of my favorite books is Brave Story. Its about a kid who goes to another universe to change his past. It was originally published in Japanese but is translated now. The longest book I have ever read, with a total of 816 pages.....

Yeah, and I made the mistake of setting it down for a month..... it was really hard to pick it back up because of that.

Our school makes us read...... odd things..... we just finished reading Anthem and Alive. I enjoyed both books but they were certainly.... interesting, to say the least, lol

I actually found Alive to be very inspirational. Its about the Stella Maris rugby team that crashed in the Andes.

I loved that book. I wanted to punch my teacher in the face when she made us read Things Fall Apart and Siddhartha instead. Those books had the most unlikable main characters ever. Especially Things Fall Apart. I CHEERED when the main character *SPOILERS* killed himself. I was like "FINALLY!!!"

Anyways, I rarely read because I'm super picky [it has to interest me in the first few pages... which is why I prefer the Harry Potter movies over the books *killed by mob*]

Right now we're reading Night, which is about the Holocaust. It's okay. *shrugs* At least it gives me the chance to find out more about Dr. Mengele. *has a thing for German mad scientists*

Oh, and I'm reading The Invisible Man too, just for fun. It's kinda... off and on. Sometimes it's interesting, then it hits some dull spots. At least I'll be ahead when it's assigned later on.

Even though it's just there to look pretty, I have a gorgeous copy of Grey's Anatomy. And... yeah. I'm really too tired to think of anything else to say.

I read The Invisible Man for an independent project last year. I thought it was pretty interesting.

Mengele is so creepy. I mean, I've read a lot about him and find it sort of fascinating to study. And I think a character based on that personality type would be really interesting. Mostly because I think "mad" fits him perfectly. Some of his experiments were so...I don't know what the word is. LoL. Definitely not the work of some genius who was trying to learn, but just the work of sadistic lunatic (or idiot..hard to say). Sometimes you read about him and it's hard to believe you're reading about a real person and not some fictional villain because the stuff he did was just so out there.

@__@

For the record, I've only read one Harry Potter book--and I read it within the last year, and only because of the popularity of the series and someone I lived with had it checked out. I think that had I picked up Rowling's first book when it was first published, I wouldn't have kept reading.

I think she created a remarkable world with some wonderful details--the sort of world that really draws you into it and makes you want to be a part of it. And I think the ideas behind some of the characters were really great. I didn't care for her actual writing style, and felt that a lot of the characters came across as very two dimensional. They could have been so much more vibrant, but just weren't.

The first time I heard about Mengele was when I was playing this game with a main character who was a fictional scientist that worked under him. I heard about his experiments on changing eye color by injecting serum into children's eyes from that game. And then I heard about his tests on twins and such... I really need to find some books on him. =D

And I totally agree with that. Rowling seems like a plot writer to me, and I tend to prefer deep characters over a nice plot and setting. Two dimensional characters kill books for me, since I really don't want to keep reading if I don't care about what happens to the characters.

My class just finished reading that. ._.
Five chapters a day killed my brain for our whole The Invisible Man unit.

But I thought Oedipus was fun--although the plot is very creepy. But my class read it out loud with accents which made the "fun" part. xD

As for what I'm reading now. It's mostly school related books. We just finished reading Hamlet. And I was the only one who cried when Hamlet died at the end of the movie.

Now we're reading The Importance of Being Earnest. (Yes, we're reading a lot of plays. ; w; )

I'm finally finishing the Tales of Redwall series. Currently I'm reading Eulalia! with Doomwyte and the Sable Quean to go. I believe there was one more published just before Mr. Jacques' death, last year, that I need to find, too.

I love the series, not only for the nostaliga (they were the books, in primary school (er..fourth grade for you guys) that pulled me away from horse fiction and showed me what good fantasy writing looked like) but because they're so cute and so well written. Even the fight scenes - which are horrific when you sort of step back and really read through them analytically - are written in a way that appeal to children.

I like Maudie's character in Eulalia! She's so bratty and flighty, but at the same time very "posh" and rather clever. I'm really enjoying it and I'm looking forward to moving on to Doomwyte next.

I loved the Invisible Man. The main character is that brilliant mix of tragic and "jerk faise" that you're never sure whether you want to feel sorry for him, or not. It has to be my favourite book by H. G. Wells, after The Isle of Dr. Moreau.

Oedipus Rex was another favourite. The tragedy, mythology and the moral codes behind the old Greek Tragedies, made them so beautifully deep and complex.

The Cherry Orchard, by Anton Chekov is another good read. That sort of tragic-comedy is so much fun to read, because you never know when a scene will take a twist toward the sad or the hilarious - or both.

The Redwall series was my childhood and my childhood escape from the creepy drama that had been acting up during that weird time frame if I remember correctly which is why I love them so much! I think I need to go re-read them again because when you mentioned Eulalia I was shocked to realize I read it but don't quite remember what happened! ARGH. So I will go read them if school gives me time!

All I really remember was Martin and Mattimeo and Cornflower and whether they all appeared in the same book is all clouded in my hazy memory. Shame on me! xD
