Hyweth loved spinners; despite what she had often told her mate, brown Hatteth. He was so easily made upset! If only he understood the natural beauty of such things. They spun so beautifully. If Hatteth could only see that... Surely he wouldn't hate them as much as he claimed he did? Hatteth, come bring yours. I will show you something! Come quickly. It shines in the sun. You will miss it! If Hatteth only saw the mess spinners... Well, perhaps... A marvelous idea! Truly. Hyweth was clever!

Instead of calling Hatteth to see the spinners--she would take the spinners to Hatteth! Truly ingenius. Hyweth did not think of why she had not thought of this wonderful, marvelous plan before. She had it now. I will bring it to you, Hatteth. You do not need to come. I will have Mine come see yours, as well. Perhaps now, yours will choose. She rose from her spot in the the sand; and took a long moment... Several, rather, fussing at her hide. She would need a bath soon. One could only lay in the sun so long before needing to soak! She was filthy. She nosed at her side, craning her neck to view it properly. Ah! That was the irritation. Tiny grains of sand were clinging to her her otherwise gleaming hide.

Hyweth did not like being dirty. She stretched once more, flaring out her wings as she did so in hopes that doing so would remove the remaining sand. Mine, I am going to Hatteth. After, you must bathe me.

J'len had been working on making a guitar for J'nes. Carefully she had sanded the wood to--close enough to perfection for her, anyway. She had purchased the strings she had used a while ago. She hoped it would be a good enough exchange! J'nes had sewn her a wonderful plush of Hyweth; correct in every detail. Naturally, the crimson had disagreed. I'll stop by in less than a candlemark, she promised Hyweth with a smile. I'm almost done!

Hatteth had been drowsily sunning himself outside his weyr when Hyweth contacted him first. He cracked open an eye, debating whether to get up. It was warm and he was comfortable. But she sounded excited. He had just decided to get up and was lifting a foot to do so when she told him to stay there after all. Slightly crossly, he settled himself back down. Make up your mind! He retorted to her. I am by my weyr, and I will wait. Mine is inside. He idly wondered what it was she had to show him, but the warmth of the sun was lulling him into a lazy mood, so he gave up thinking quickly enough.

Hyweth carefully collected the spinner from its web with her tail. She hoped it would not move as she walked to Hatteth's weyr. She was lucky. The tiny creature was so frightened at having been picked up by such a large being that it remained still, and simply clung onto her as she moved. Hatteth! I have brought it! the crimson announced excitedly, craning her neck to make sure that she did, indeed, still have the spinner. She slowly moved her tail towards the brown. See! It made the most beautiful thing in my weyr! I brought it.

J'len had finished the guitar. At least, she believed so. Having always been more talented with her voice than her hands, she wasn't quite sure she the guitar would have gone for more than a few marks if the Harper Hall had sought to sell it. Still, it was for J'nes--and she'd put many hours into the making of it. Hopefully he would like it! She wanted to return the gesture of gift giving, at least.

She made her way to J'nes' weyr, and knocked on the door. She carefully carried the guitar under her arm. Maybe she would teach J'nes to play it. He'd like that, wouldn't he?

Hatteth heard Hyweth approaching, but kept his eyes closed in order to better feel the sun on his hide. Only when she stood in front of him, blocking the sun, and told him to look did he open his eyes. He looked at the tail in front of him, but didn't see anything interesting. Just A useless big clinging to her hide. Where is it? I see nothing pretty, he told her lazily. Did it fall off on the way?

J'nes had been in his weyr mending clothing when he heard the knock at his door. When he set aside his work and answered it, he was pleasantly surprised to see J'len outside. "Well, hello!" he greeted her cheerfully. "And to what occasion to I owe the honor of your presence, dear lady?" he asked, giving her a bow with many flourishes of the hands.

It is a spinner! Hyweth informed Hatteth, vaguely surprised that the brown had missed it. How could he not see it? I did not drop it. See? It is here! I brought it for you to see. Why hadn't Hatteth reacted in the way she had hoped? Couldn't he see the wonder that the tiny creature was? Couldn't he see the usefulness of a spinner?

J'nes' antics would have amused children easily. Fortunately for him, they amused J'len just as easily. She put a hand to her mouth to stifle a laugh. "Hello to you, too! I brought you something, J'nes," she told him with a smile, holding out the guitar with one hand. "I was working on this earlier. I only just finished it. It might need tuning," She used her free hand to rub the back of her neck. She'd never been an expert when it came to crafting instruments. "I thought maybe we could play together, sometime," she added by way of explanation. "I could teach you, if you'd like."

Hatteth narrowed his eyes at her. I do not want to see spinners. They are nuisances and leave dirty cobwebs everywhere. He thought they had discussed spinners like this before, but he couldn't remember the details. But surely she already knew he didn't like spinners? Get it away. I do not want to have to clean up after this one as well. It is enough work keeping my weyr clean of others.

J'nes beamed at her. "It's a lovely instrument! May I see?" He took it from her outstretched hand, handling it carefully. As he looked it over he said, "I'd love to learn how to play it. I'm afraid I'm no good with instruments, so I might be a bit of a difficult student. You play it like this, right?" He flipped the guitar over and, holding it firmly with one hand, used the fingers of the other to strike gently on the back as if playing a hand drum.

Hyweth had in fact, forgotten that Hatteth hated spinners so very much. She had known, to a vague point, that her mate disliked them. No, spinners do not. Dust causes cobwebs. Spinners are very clean creatures. You should see their webs in the sun! They shine brightly! Have you seen this, Hatteth? I do not think you would not like them if you had. She hesitated, before allowing the poor spinner to climb off of her tail and onto the sands. They are not nuisances. They are very useful.

"Don't worry about that," J'len assured him with a grin. "I never was very good at it, myself, so I'll be a terrible teacher to match my terrible student." She paused and watched with amusement. She didn't think he was being serious. "If it was a drum, you would be," she told him with a smile. "Here, I'll show you. You won't be able to go home playing any songs, but... I can teach you some finger placements.

Hatteth raised his neck to look at her better and said slowly, as if to a dimglow, Spinners cause cobwebs, too. The dust sticks to the webs to make cobwebs. He gave a disdainful snort in the direction she'd sent the spinner and added in a normal tone, And even when they are not dusty, then get clogged and torn by every passing bit of leaf or insect, which is not at all pretty. They also stick to anything that brushes against them, which is why I have had webs and cobwebs stuck to my hide many times. They make messes and get in the way. And they keep making new webs when one is cleared away, which makes it harder to keep the weyr clean.

"You mean this isn't a drum?" J'nes said, feigning astonishment. "Then what is it?" He peered at the instrument suspiciously, as if it had been trying to trick him somehow. Then he shrugged and stood back, holding the door open for J'len. "Come in and try and teach me then. We'll see if I'm too hopeless to learn even the easiest basics."

Hyweth didn't seem to appreciate Hatteth's tone. Spinners only cause cobwebs when dust comes, she informed the brown haughtily. If you kept your weyr clean, there would be no dust. No cobwebs. Spinners are useful. They do not allow insects into my weyr. I like this. They make new webs just as we must bathe. It does not hurt anyone, what spinners do. Why do you dislike them so?

"A guitar," J'len grinned. She could see how he had been talented with his younger siblings. She entered the brownrider's weyr, still grinning as she looked over her shoulder at him. "Well then," she said. "Most basic thing to know is..." Another grin. "The instrument you're holding is called a guitar. It has strings, see?" she gestured to them. "They can make a nice sound--" she demonstrated by playing a G chord. "Or an unpleasant sound." She twanged one of the strings with a fingernail.
