Gliding was a difficult and trying task. She had spent most of the morning in the nearby young groves leaping out of low branches and practicing. Her limbs were tired and her wings ached. That was signs of needing a break. And so, the filly folded up her little feathered wings and trotted out of the tree line into the meadow. The grass here was a pleasant length, longer than short but not long enough to hide much more than a snake or some shy mice. And it was lush, green and new. She loved how it felt under her paws, the blades were soft on her blistery skin. They were not used to the abuse she put them through in her desperate want to learn how to fly, so she often didn't notice until they popped and left blood behind. That's also when she knew she had to stop, otherwise momma would get very upset.

It wasn't long until she made it to the natural low area of the meadow where she knew a calm pond slept. The grass was a little longer here, tall enough to brush at her wings in some places, but there was also a neatly stomped out area where she had made herself a nice resting place. This nest of sorts, allowed her to lie down and dip her paws into the cool water and stir the water gently with her feather-tufted tail. There was also a single weeping willow, young for a tree and still growing that at the hottest time of day cast a shadow over her nest as it did now. Without a second thought or glance around she settled in naturally and allowed her eyes to slide shut with a satisfied sigh.

Zarita let out a little sigh as she walked along in the cool morning air. How long had she traveled now? How long had it been since Majesty had left her? Leaving without a trace and taking their basket with him? How long had it been since she had given up her first basket? Left it in the clutches of that monster and her mate? How long? Not long enough. It would never be long enough. No matter how long she lived, how much time passed, Zarita would never forget what she had done, what she had caused. The faces of her unknown foals would always haunt her. Forever taunt her with the memories of what she had done. And Majesty, she would always love him, and yet, she knew that she would never see him again. She would never feel his warm embrace or hear the sounds of his village again. Come to think of it, she supposed even if he had vanished for now, she knew she could find him again if she wanted to. It wouldn't be long before he went back to his village, taking their foal with him. But she knew that she could never go back. She could never see him again. She loved him enough to respect his wishes, even if they hurt her.

Blinking back tears, Zarita surveyed her surroundings. How long had she walked now? It certainly wasn't morning anymore and she didn't recognize this area. Perhaps this was what she needed. A fresh start and a new life. Somewhere where she could pretend that the past didn't and wouldn't haunt her. Somewhere that she could call home. Up ahead she could smell fresh water, a little pond by the looks of it. Tired and thirsty, the mare hurriedly made her way over the water. Not looking to see if anyone else was nearby.

Swaying her feet and tail back and forth in the water in sync, the foal smiled at the movement of the cool water. It was soothing after the initial sting, and as she continued to mill her feet slowly they began to form a rhythm, a trance. This pattern began to form sound in her head. Something soft and soothing like the water itself, guiding a quiet hum from her mind and out of her mouth. The humming slowly grew a little louder and began to sew notes together into a tune.

Light, calm and happy it sounded all at once, coming from such a small feminine voice that it almost sounded like a bird had taken up vocal chords. Her wings stretched out behind her and rustled the grass a little, but at that point, it would probably be the humming that would give her away to any passersby. She did not notice any intrustions, however, as all her attention was stuck on keeping the rhythm going with her feet and tail, and the tune going with her voice.

Slowly, Zarita approached the pond and lowered her head, taking a few large gulps of the clear water. As the refreshing water hit her throat she let out a little sigh relief. It wasn't terribly hot out, but she had certainly found herself thirsty after quite a journey. Bending to take another sip, the mare began to hear a rather rhythmic humming noise. She paused to listen to it, trying to pinpoint the sound. There it was again. Her ears flicked every which way trying to find the location of the noise. Was she not alone as she had thought? Was she starting to lose her mind after all? No, she was sure she could hear something coming from the east. As she moved towards the noise she could hear it growing louder. For some reason the mare found the melody soothing, lulling her into an almost trance like state while she searched for her creator.

Finally, Zarita found herself only a yard or so away from a little filly. Although she certainly wasn't any sort of filly that she had ever seen before. Where her hooves were supposed to be, she had clawed feet. Now wasn't that strange? The mare wondered to herself. These lands certainly seemed to hold many surprises. "Why hello there." She called out to the filly cheerfully.

Her tune had managed to find itself a pattern. She repeated it by itself a few times before finalizing it in her mind. Quickly following it found itself a partner, it's second verse. Just as she began to repeat the second verse for the first time Avia heard a greeting. Eyes snapping open her little head jerked up and toward the sound of the call. Even as she reacted she processed the greeting as a calm and cheerful female voice. So when her eyes landed on a perfectly suiting mare, Avia relaxed her tensed muscles and sighed softly.

She put on a smile and gently pulled her feet up out of the water so that she could tuck them underneath her to turn her attention to the newcomer. "You startled me!" a soft giggle showed that she didn't mind so much, and wasn't being accusatory, merely stating it as she led up to her own introduction. Bringing her violet eyes up to look at the pretty mare's face Avia added politely in a chirp, "My name is Avia! What's yours?" A c**k of her head had her thinking of adding a compliment but she caught herself and decided to wait until she was sure this mare wasn't just walking by before she asked her other questions. Wasn't nice to waste others' days with too many questions. She could be patient when she really really tried, so instead she swept her tail back and forth in the water as she eagerly awaited to know the mare's name.

Sweetly the mare smiled at the little filly. So energetic and curious! Was this what having foals was like? Would her children this curious? Were they well taken care of? No, she couldn't think about it now. There was no need to torment herself like this. Just talk to the filly a bit, maybe give her motherly instincts a bit of a relief and then be on her way. What was the harm in that? One day she would have children that she could keep. For now however, she would simply have to shut out her past.

"I'm sorry." She started off cheerfully, nodding to the filly. "It wasn't my intention to startle you. You have such a pretty name! Mine is Zarita." She continued on. "Aren't you awfully far from your home? Is your mother nearby? She must be worried about you." Zarita continued on, striking up a conversation with the filly.

The excitement grew inside of Avia and threatened to have her burst! Maybe in a colorful cloud of flowers... or some other fantastic form of confetti! Oh, that could certainly be exciting! But no, no. She was not going to let her manners escape quite that easily! She wrangled her emotions into place quickly --in her mind, she kicked them and stomped them into place, of course!-- and jumped on the opportunity for a conversation.

"What a pretty name! I love it!" She chirped in reply as she sprang up from her nest. She wanted to run up to the mare and spin circles on the spot and spill out a hundred different things... but that wouldn't do. Her mother was attempting to teach her daughters that patience could be valuable, and it could also extend others' tolerance of young vibrant foals! So when she remembered this lesson she paused mid-bound and took a deep breath to calm down. And only after she exhaled did she answer.

"Oh, I'm not too far! I was just practicing my flying, you see!" A small flap of the wings to indicate she was telling the truth. Wouldn't want pretty Zarita to think she was a liar! "Momma's probably taking a nap from me and my sister," Her tail flicked over to shield part of her face as she giggled mischievously, "We tire her out sometimes, we do." It was then that it dawned on her: this mare had beautiful long hair, and what was more... it was braided! Drawing to a halt a little far into the mare's personal bubble Avia looked up and reached out with one outstretched paw but stopped short a small stretch out of grasp. "Can I...?" She had eyes only for the beautiful black braid that cascaded over Zarita's pale shoulder. If only she could touch it...

Zarita could feel the laughter filling her heart, the happiness that she felt at interacting with this filly. Was this what it was like to have children? Would her children have been this energetic? Would they have asked this many questions? Did she have two girls? Or were they both boys? Or perhaps one of each? Zarita could feel her brief moment of hapiness trying to slip away from her at those thoughts. No, it would do her no good to ponder on such things. Simply focus on the here and now and get it together.

Composing herself, the mare smiled down at the energetic filly. At least she hadn't wandered too far way from her mother. Goodness knows how upset the mare would be to have a missing filly. Zarita could only imagine. "Well thank you." She said cheerfully, accepting the fillies compliment. "I'm quite fond of it myself." She continued on. The mare paused a few moments, allowing the filly to continue what she had been saying and calm down.

The mare was a little surprised and startled by the outstretched claw of the filly's but she only continued to smile warmly at her. "Why of course you can!" She chuckled as she said it. "Perhaps one day you can grow yours out just as long?" She offered, trying to keep up the small talk. It was a little unnerving to see such odd claws on a filly such as this, but the mare knew that Avia meant her know harm and felt reassured. There was no evil in this filly, none that she could detect and she hoped that she could stay as pure as she was now.
