Things had been interesting since Emil first came into Camphoreon. He had been amazed how he had made a friend so quickly. Luke had been very kind to him, and Emil felt that he should return the favor some how. But the boy had been at a loss of what to do. Eventually a brilliant idea had struck him. Fishing! A lot of people went fishing back in Makko town, so he decided to teach Luke how to fish! It seemed like a good idea anyway.. despite the fact that Emil had done very little himself. His Aunt and Uncle didn't let him get out much, but when they did.. it was to get him out of their hair for a while. And that had been one of the things he had learned while watching people on the piers.
Thanks to Luke's monetary resources, they were able to get some fishing gear. Although Emil always felt guilty that his new friend always paid for everything, even if he didn't seem to care about it. But the blonde boy lead the way to a fishing pier on Camphoreon's coast. Luckily it was deserted today, although if he had been more observant, he probably would have noticed a sign nearby.
DANGER: SHARPEDO NO SWIMMING OR FISHING
Oops.
Making his way to the end of the pier, Emil set down his fishing pole and tackle box, waiting for Luke to do the same.

'Fishing' was a weird concept to Luke. If he really wanted to eat fish, he could certainly buy some for less effort than it took to catch one. Or if he wanted to train a hooked aquatic pokemon, it was more reliable to spend the money for a well-bred water-type than to leave it up to luck. But the fishing Emil spoke of didn't seem to be for the goal of sustenance nor training - it was some kind of recreational thing, apparently. And, well... if Luke wasn't battling his pokemon against one another or swinging his sword, he was usually napping or staring into space. The idea that he could learn something new to fill times of boredom was a promising one.
Luke mirrored Emil's movements, trying all the while to make it look like he knew exactly what he was doing and he only happened to repeat his companion's motions out of pure coincidence, not because he had no idea what this whole sport or whatever it was was supposed to entail. He crouched at the edge of the pier, staring into the clear water and taking in the now-familiar scent of the shore. Emil could not be faulted for his obliviousness of the sign's warning, for the redheaded boy was just as guilty. He pushed back up to his feet with a sound like an expectant "so" and waited for further prompts from the other boy. Not that he needed further prompts, of course.

Emil held up the fishing rod and a hook that he'd procured from the tackle box, his expression beaming. "So, we put the hook on the line."
Fortunately Emil was good at observing things when he really wanted to, and tied the hook to the line. Although he had no idea it wasn't actually the right sort of knot, but ignorance was bliss.
"Then put bait on the hook!."
They had gotten an assortment of baits for ocean fishing, and Emil picked out a piece of Tentacool and attached the slimy sliver of flesh to the hook. A lot of fishes used this back in Makko town.
"And then cast!"
Holding the end of the rob above his head, he tilted it back and then flung it forward, the line effectively lashing like a whip as it came back swung above Luke's head with the hook just barely missing him. Emil looked astonished and then extremely sheepish and apologetic.
"SORRY!" he quickly apologized, his cheeks flushed in embarrassment as he looked down at the rod to figure out what went wrong.
"O-oh... r-r-right." He then flipped the release that hovered just above the spool of line. He then made another cast, this time successfully. The weighted line and bait quickly hit the water and sunk.

Luke watched and listened at full attention. If there was one thing he'd gotten good at, it was leaning from example, and all the better if the example was actually explained in a way he could understand. He repeated the steps on his own line as they were described and demonstrated, still fumbling obliviously with the bait - it was gross - when Emil's hook went sailing over his head at a distance that whistled in his ears.
"Arceus--!" He ducked too late to avoid the unexpected projectile, so it was fortunate that the point missed him regardless. He blinked in passing astonishment only briefly before responding in a more coherent way, "Are you sure that's not some kind of weapon?!" He dismissed his aggravation, though not without a bit more grumbling, before returning his focus to the rod in his hands. He finished the preparations Emil had displayed and cast his line into the water. Something about the way it was done made him suspect that there were probably such things as good and bad casts, but Luke wouldn't know the difference anyway, so he dismissed the thought.

Emil gave a shaky nervous laugh at Luke's words, still quite embarrassed at his mistake. But it started to pass as his new friend didn't remain disgruntled and made his own cast. The added "plunk" in the water drew a nod a renewed smile as Emil tilted his head.
"Now was just have to wait for something to bite."
Hopefully Luke would have the patience to wait. Emil realized he hadn't really thought that one through as he had quickly figured out that the red head was not the best when it came to patience. But if they were lucky, they might not have to wait long. Camphoreon's shores were supposed to be teeming with all sorts of different water Pokemon.

When Emil said that they would be waiting, Luke assumed maybe a couple of minutes. It was a form of recreation, after all; any longer than that would start to remove the point of it being a means of entertainment. So when five minutes had ticked by and the lure at the end of his line showed no signs of movement beyond its lazy bob, Luke was already starting to lose his fragile patience. "How long does this usually take?" he said. It seemed sort of unreliable to just sit there and wait. Couldn't they just yell or something to get the water-types' attention?

"Um... well," Emil started with an uncertain waver in his voice. The fisherman in Makko made it look incredibly easy and would pull in fish all the time. He knew there was a certain about of skill and knowledge... which probably neither of them had.
"Something should bite pretty quickly. Try moving the rod a little bit while reeling it in slowly, sometimes fish won't bite if the bait doesn't look alive?" He thought he heard someone say that once. Maybe. Emil tried this as well, tugging on his rod just a little bit to make the bait move around in the water.
"If you don't get a bite though, just reel it in all the way and cast again."
Which Emil ended up doing. This time without incident.

He sure didn't sound very convincing, especially with the way he phrased his advice into a question. It couldn't really be helped, though, Luke supposed. He watched as Emil drew in his line and cast it out again, deciding to do the same. One more try, he resolved. If nothing happened after one more try, for a total of four casts between the two of them, then clearly something was wrong with the water or the pokemon in it, and there was nothing to be done about that.
He reeled in the line for his second cast and was startled to find the bait missing from the hook. "What the hell?!" The turn of events triggered an unnecessary vehemence in his tone and posture, and he hurried to set a fresh piece of bait, "Don't screw around with me, you stupid fish!" The rig sank into the water with a heavy plonk. 'One more try' was right out the window. Luke wasn't going anywhere without teaching those sneaky bastards a lesson.

When Luke pulled up an empty line, Emil blinked in confusion and surprise. He hadn't really expected that. The expert fisherman he'd watched never lost their bait! It seems there were some thieving fish in these waters.
"Eh heh," was Emil's only answer to Luke's vehement words as he just continued to patiently sit and wait. Not knowing that there was a pink fin passing through the water below them, circling the pier. A few more minutes of recasting and waiting... and the fin disappeared, resulting in Emil feeling a yank on his line.
"Whoa!" he suddenly shouted as he was jerked forward with his rod. "I've got something!" And with that, the boy pulled back on the rod with all of his might and started reeling in. Although he didn't get very far as the fish on the other end gave another powerful pull caused Emil to hit the railing. "It's a big one!" he announced as he leaned back on his heels, teeth gritted as he tried to pull. The end of his rod bent over.

Emil might have been placid and patient, but Luke was very much not. He leaned forward with his brow stubbornly knit, glaring at the water as if challenging it. The exercise was in vain, however, and drew no prey to his bait. His companion, however, seemed to have a stroke of luck, and something seized his line. Luke's postured straightened in attention, and he stared wide-eyed at boy fighting against the thing on his hook. Like this, it really did look like a sport.
The noble pressed himself against the pier's railing, leaning into it to try and find what it was against which Emil struggled. "What is it?!" he said when it became evident that he would not spot the creature. He turned back to the blonde boy, wondering if maybe there was something he was supposed to be doing to help. His eyes wandered back to the water, like a child staring at the mailbox on a day when a package was expected to arrive. This whole 'fishing' thing wasn't nearly as boring as he thought, once something actually happened.

Another hard tug and Emil almost lost his grip on the rod, which would have ended it right there if he had. But he somehow managed to keep a grip and kept pulling. Although it was clear that his rod was under a lot of strain, thus he let out some line in order to keep it from breaking.
"I dunno!" Emil shouted, trying his best to fight the fish. "But its really strong!"
This indeed was the sporting part. The fight between man and beast! Emil had no idea that it would be quite like this.

"Ah--" Luke caught the near-slip of Emil's hands on the rod, relieved when the thing did not jerk out of his grasp but anxious that it could very well do so at any moment. "Well don't let it go!" That obviously was not the other boy's intent, but Luke felt the need to say it nonetheless. He stared out into the dim water once more, then suddenly turned around yet again, his tone eager, "What should I do?"

This fish seemed to be just as determined as the two boys on the pier and Emil was already starting to get tired from fighting the thing. He glanced at Luke with one eye shut. "E-easy for you to s-say!" But he would certainly do his best not to let go!
"I... EAAAUGH!" And that's when it happened. The line suddenly went rigid as the fish made its best effort yet. It was obviously much stronger than Emil as the boy was again slammed into the railing and pulled so hard that he flipped over it and went sailing over the edge.
There was a large splash as Emil hit the water and disappeared into the murky depths.

"Emil!" Luke was at the railing too late to try and prevent the fall and was left staring once again into the dark ocean, green eyes wide. What the hell was he supposed to do now?! He couldn't just jump in after him; then both of them would be in trouble. He took only a moment longer to consider his options before pulling the white premier ball from his side and releasing Leste onto the pier. The Pidgeot was far from a water-type, but he had at least learned how to ride her properly, so she could bring them to the water's surface to search for the fallen boy more effectively. With a short series of commands, the pair circled somewhat clumsily over the area into which Emil had disappeared, the redheaded boy calling his friend's name intermittently and scanning for some sign of him.
Fishing was suddenly incredibly not cool.

Emil felt sudden terror seize him as he hit the chilly ocean water. But he held the rod in a death grip and was pulled along swiftly through the water, his eyes squeezed shut and holding his breath. He had no idea what he was going to do and simply held on for the ride as he was pulled through the water.
The fish on the end of the line did everything it knew to try and get itself free. It suddenly jumped out of the water, flailing about, and revealing itself to be a pink Sharpedo. Emil followed shortly after, his eyes flying wide as he took a deep breath of air, still holding onto the rod as he plunged back into the water after the Pokemon.
Despite being back in the water, the Sharpedo's fin was now visible and cut through the water like razor as it headed back for the pier. Emil's silhouette could be seen from above, the boy being pulled along just a foot or two below the surface.
