Golden pelted and purple-eyed, little Kito seemed to be growing by the day. She still had a lot of her pudgy cub-fat but her legs were growing longer - though her clumsiness was still rather apparent. In any case she was currently crouched on the dusty ground, eyeing up a butterfly with its wings unfolded with brilliant colour. It flapped them lazily and Kito looked almost under a trance as she swayed. Blinking her eyes, she regained focus and crouched a little lower.

"Gonna get'choo..." She murmured softly, gathering her paws beneath her.

And then, with a smirk, she threw herself at the butterfly, giving a squeal of delight as she imagined her paws pinning the insect to the stone. She - a successful hunter! Her parents would be so very, very proud! Except, in reality, she misjudged her pounce and landed short of the stone, kicking up dust that had her sneezing uncontrollably. The butterfly - her prey - seemed to decide it was too noisy to hang around and took to the air, dancing up through the sky like the petals of a flower.

Kito's ears drooped."That's no fair..."

Laying just behind the stone, warming himself in the sun Sar thought about ... well he thought about a lot of hings. That was what he did. His brain never really shut off at any point even when seeming to be relaxed and thoughtless. Like know. Right now the meetings that he'd had with pride members not his family members. But especially Tala. For some reason Tala was the dominating thought running through his mind. And he still couldn't figure it out.

Sar pried his eye open at his sister's squeal of joy. When she pounced and missed the butterfly, he stood and shook thoughts of Tala into the back of his mind to dissect later. If ever again.

"All's fair, Kito, you know what the hunters say." Sar came over to his sister and nudged her side smiling. "Besides you don't want to catch a old stupid weak butterfly. The moment you touch their wings they can no longer fly. That's hardly a good piece of prey. We should try for a dragonfly or a roach or a mouse. We should definitely going hunting for a mouse."

She looked up, spying her brother, and instantly brightened. If she wasn't alone then maybe things would be more fun! She loved spending time with her siblings, chasing along behind them in their escapades.

She blinked, looking surprised when he said that she didn't want to be catching butterflies. "I...don't?" And then he continued and her eyes widened a little at the possibility of catching something bigger and faster and stronger. That sounded like a lot of fun, but it also sounded difficult.

She bounced back to her paws and leapt up onto the rock the butterfly had been occupying only moments before. "Do you think we could, brother? Do you really? I mean...if we tried together, it might work?" Her tail swayed as she regained her. "This is exciting! So exciting! We would be proper hunters then, wouldn't we?" And she leapt towards him, bouncing on the tips of her paws. And then, quite suddenly, she went still.

"Oh, but Sar, I don't know where the mouses live." Her ears fell.

Sar smiled at Kito. And nudged her side. "Silly, that's part of the fun. We need to find them first. And then we can catch them. And I can examine their dens."

He bumped her butt with his and sat down. "If I were a mouse, where would I live? Where would I hide from big lions like us?" Sar scanned the area looking at the possibilities and trying to calculate the best mouse-hiding spots.

A small crevice between two boulders. A petrified stump. Bushes. A scattering of trees and their roots. All the possibilities. "Hmmm what do you think, Kito?"

"Okay!" She blurted, wriggling closer and eyeing him expectantly. Sar would know what to do, in that case, and she could follow him and do what she was told. And then he started questioning and she wasn't sure if he wanted her to answer him or not.

The concept of rhetorical questions was something that the slightly ditzy female had yet to understand. But before she could conjure a reply he turned and asked her directly. Brightening, she gave him a small nudge back and grinned.

"Somewhere mouse-sized." She replied unhelpfully, bobbing her head in self-agreement. "Where big lion paws can't go." And she stomped one of her own paws down on the ground, drawn to the small dust cloud it lifted. She was easily distracted, that much was certain. "Oh, oh, oh, I know!" She leapt to her paws and wriggled with excitement. "There was a hole! A hole...um...somewhere near here." But where, exactly? She searched her memory and then, with a shrill cry, darted off. "Over here, over here!" And she tore across the ground to where a lone tree coiled up from the ground. With a shrill laugh she ran circles around the trunk, trying to look for the hole that she was certain was around somewhere.

Except on her fourth lap she began to get worried.

"Can you see it, Sar?" She asked, slowing to catch her breath. "I thought it was here. Maybe I remembered wrong. I was distracted...." Though by what, she couldn't remember, either.

When Kita darted off confident of a mouse-sized hole she'd seen, Sar smiled and followed his sister. His tail swayed back and forth at the prospect of hunting with her.

Kito's four laps around the tree was barely a half of the way around for Sar. To Sar, Kito seemed to zoom around the tree. He wondered how she could see anything when she ran that fast. Sar took in the details of the tree and its roots and even the fallen leafs. Before he made a full circle around the tree, he found a small pile of leafs that looked ... suspicious. He swept the pile aside to reveal a hole. "Was this it, Kito? Is this the hole you saw before?"

"Oh! Oh yes, I think that's it! I think that's it! Well done, Sar!" She bounded over to him and swatter some of the extra leaves aside before leaning down to peer into it. She clearly had not understood the concept of being sneaky when it came to hunting.

"I can't see anything, Sar! How do we get them to come out of their home?" And she tried to paw at the entrance a little, her little nose scrunched up in concentration. "Do you have any ideas, Sar? If we tell them we want to be friends will they come out? I can pounce them if they do!" She puffed herself up with pride. "I'm good at pouncing!"

And of course, she wasn't really all that great at pouncing.

As Kito scattered all the leaves away from the mice den, Sar realized that this was going to be so much harder, but Kito was happy and excited. He'd have to keep her that way becuse there was no way a mouse was going to buy that a lion and a lioness, no matter how young, wanted to be friends. Most mice really weren't that dimwitted.

Sar took a another look around a nodded. "Yep, Kito, I have an idea. The mouse is no going to want to be friends because we are big and scary to it, right? So we will have to make it come out."

Fire.

Sar would have to be careful, but he remembered that one time during a storm how all the animals had run from the smoke even though stomping on the small flames would have been smarter. Smoke and Fire made prey panic. That's what they needed. Sar smirked as the play developed in his mind.

"Kito, I need you to gather some dried grass and bark for me." Hopefully, sending Kito on small hunting missions like that would keep her interested until they could ponce the mouse. Or mice. Hopefully mice. It would be nice to have more than one. Then Kito can have one, Sar could have a test subject, and if there were more than one they could split the rest.

Sar was really starting to like Mice Hunts.

Kito looked more than a little excited as Sar exclaimed he had an idea (he was sooo smart!) and bounced on the tips of her paws as she waited to hear it. "Right, right! Too scary!" And she imagined herself as fierce, with her hackles up and her fangs all shining in the sun. Yes, quite a little predator she was!

And when she was given her task, it was clear she would attend to it dutifully indeed, nodding fiercely with enthusiasm. "I can do that! Just you wait and see! I'll be back before you say 'butterfly'!" And without a moment to lose she had turned tail and dashed away, pausing a second later when she realised she was in the wrong direction.

It would take her a good few minutes to return and when she did her head and tail were held proudly up, her purple eyes gleaming. In her mouth were great tufts of grass and a large chunk of bark. Except as she walked back the bark worked its way out from under her teeth and fell, catching in her front paws so that she bowled forwards, head over heels.

Hopefully she would grow out of the clumsiness...

Sar walked around the mouse hidey-hole to check for any other escape routes to guard when they came flooding out from the smoke and fire that he and Kito were going to make. A fire hunt. Sar smiled. He hadn't actually played with fire yet, but it was very exciting.

After a few moments of examining the mouse camp, Sar sat on his haunches and started to think of all the butterfly species he had found in the Pridelands. By the time Kito came rolling back to the mouse camp, Sar had thought of nine, their distinct features, wing size, color, prefered flowers to land on, and the such.

Sar smiled at his cute clumy sister as she sat sprawled in front of him with the grass still in her mouth and the bark not. "Okay now we need two sticks. Do you want to find them or do you want to sit and rest a bit since you went hunting for the grass and bark, Kito?"

"Oh, oh, oh! No, it's okay, I can find them!" Such enthusiasm, as always. And again she was off. Thankfully, this time the sticks hadn't taken too much time to find and she was back again within moments, two sticks held carefully in her mouth as she navigated back to her brother without tripping this time.

"Sticks!" She declared as she dropped them onto the ground by Sar's paws. "What is all this stuff for, brother? Do the mousies eat this stuff?" She nudged the things she had gathered curiously. Kito was certain that it was going to be a good plan. Her brother was smart, after all.

"We'll be able to pounce them, right?"
PostPosted: Sat Sep 08, 2012 7:01 pm

Sar built the small area of flammable materials as the excitement grew. Sar didn't really know if it was only his excitement, but it was there and it was flavoring the air in its own way.

Whether or not that excitement of the Fire Hunt was only his didn't really matter as Kito came back with two twigs in her mouth. Now hopefully this would work. Sar finished the flammable surface and took the one of the two sticks and rams one into ground in the center of the flame area he'd established.

"Well, the plan is only a theory, and it will take a lot of work, but if it works, Kito, you'll have to be on high alert when those mice come pouring out of there holes. There's bound to be a dozen of those tunnels they've dug and they'll come flooding out, okay? Make sure you pounce as many as you can!"

Sar took the other stick in his mouth bent his head in an awkward angle that would work and started to rub the two sticks together as best he could. He shook his head until he felt his brain rattle in his head, and he thought he heard and felt a few thoughts stumbling and losing their balance as they fell to his brain's ground.

Finally a bit of smoke and embers sparked to life in the tinder of dry grass and bark. Sar stopped rubbing the sticks together and gently blew on the not yet fire until the ember grew to sparks. He pushed the bundle slowly and carefully across the ground until it half fell and half sat on top of the mouse hole. Any minute now. Hopefully.

[Sorry for the delay! I reckon we could wrap this up in a couple more posts smile ]

Kito watched in wonder at the events unfolding before her very eyes. It was magic. A strange magic that her brother appeared to have a gift at. She was so intent at staring at the flickering orange that she almost missed the first mouse that streaked up through the flames.

That first mouse was lucky. It got away.

Unfortunately for the second, Kito was ready. The rodent skittered in the path its friend had taken which brought it just in front of the little female's nose. She pounced it in moments, pressing its wriggling body to the ground. Giving a cry of delight, she struggled to keep from bouncing in delight. "Look, brother! Look!"

And then the mouse sank its teeth into her paw and made its escape. "Ouch...oh, OH! Another, quick, quick!" She swept a paw out to scoop up her prey but it dodged away from her paw and headed towards Sar.

Kimaria
sorry fo the delay too. It should be done soon I think.

Kito's delight at the flood of mice from their holes was contagious. And fun as she pounced on a mouse that she later had to let go because it had bitten her. Even the mice weren't as scared of them as they should have been, but that would change.

Keeping some of his attention of the fire and on Kito, Sar started to pounce several mice that wondered too close to him, scooping them up and allowing them to dangle from his mouth.

Around the mouthful of mice dangling from their tails, Sar mumbled at Kito, "Mem me moe wmem um mame smom mi'e." Which translated into 'Let me know when you have some mice.' Hopefully, Kito would understand him.

Dame NightFury
Sorry hon! I don't know why I keep overlooking this one @__@

Yes, one day they would be great hunters and no mice would dare to bite them on the paws. Her paws would be too big for them to get their little teeth around and then she would have nothing to fear (or so she believed). No doubt this would not be the last time she'd be nipped by a rodent.

In the end, Kito caught only one. Her pride about it was so intense, however, that it was as if she'd caught a dozen or so. With her one little prize she beamed across at her brother, eyes sparkling and said: "Let's go show these to mum and dad!" She chirped merrily. "They'll be so proud, Sar!" And, moving forwards to butt her head against his shoulder, she turned tail and dashed in the direction of the den - the little mouse hanging from her mouse.

She paused once to check that he was coming and called out: "Lessh go!"

And so, this would be their first successful hunt out of many.
