Vassago pounced a small bug like thing far from his siblings and his mom and dad. They could still see each other and so War wasn't going to be playing with them today at all, but it was far enough away that Vassago felt a lone. Not that he liked feeling alone. He preferred to be in the company of his many siblings, but especially his sisters. They were soo cute even when they were being evil. Probably more so when they were being evil.
Girls in general were cute, but not like his sisters. Girls were fun to pick on where as his sisters were fun to play and give things to. They were so unpredictable that Sago just liked giving things to them to see what they would do.
Hence why he was off by himself trying to catch the colorful bug thing to give to one of his sisters. He hadn't decided which yet, but one of them was getting the bug. Once he was getting the bug.
Sago looked back just to make sure he could still see his siblings and his mom. They were in prefect sight, so he continued to hop and pounce, always just missing the bug while it took him in circles.

He had been wandering aimlessly for quite some time now. Simba had changed a lot over the years, and now seemed much better at accepting that he simply wasn't what he had been raised to be. Nope, certainly not a lion. In some ways you could say he'd had an identity crisis way back when he had come to this conclusion, and for a while he had been pretty upset about it all.
But then he thought that was okay, because lions had some qualities that weren't too nice themselves. And maybe he just shouldn't try to think of himself as below them, or something.
Today in his wanderings, he came across a few lions. He intended to give them a wide berth, but as he went around them, keeping his attention in their direction, he didn't really realize one of the cubs was more detached, and so... Well, he nearly tripped on the thing. "Oh!" He yelped in surprise, then lowered his voice quickly, along with his ears.
Oh, good going, Simba. Maybe he should get ready to run.

He got it! He got it! The bug thing was now in his grasp.
Sago turned to the stranger that had helped him catch the bug thing and beamed up at him. "Thanks! It just wouldn't stay still." He showed the stranger the bug that he'd helped catch. "Isn't it cool! I'm going to give it to my sisters." Sago paused. What if the stranger wanted half? He deserved it after all. He'd helped catch it.
Vassago knew his mom and dad would have offered half the bug to him. Would have allowed the stranger to choose which half he wanted. Sago bit his lip and sighed. He could always catch another bug thing. "Do you want half? Since you helped catch it?"

That wasn't exactly what he had been expecting, to be honest. Some lion cubs, especially males, could be quite... well, rowdy, if he had learned anything from the boys in the Pridelands. Rambunctious and trying to prove themselves as lions and eager to get into fights and trouble.
"Um... no, that's okay, you can have it." The jackal replied, shooting a somewhat nervous glance at the cub's parents, who he could see. "Er... how did I help you catch that?" He couldn't quite remember helping a bug capture, but maybe he had done something without noticing it. Perhaps he had startled the bug in the right direction, or something.

Sago smiled at the nonlion male and covered the bug thing up for safe keeping until he could give it to one of his sisters. He'd have to call them over. He couldn't very well walk with it still alive in his paws. "You pushed me suddenly and it surprised the bug. It couldn't move as fast as a sudden push. It is only a bug." Sago sat down and tilted his head. "You don't remember?"
Maybe this nonlion male had been in war and war had taken his memories. Even the recent ones. Dad said that happened sometimes. He said it happened even when there was no war. That something would happen and the memories would be lost in their minds. Sago decided not to dwell on it. If that was true, he didn't think the nonlion male wanted to be reminded of his lost memories. "I'm Vassago Azrael. Those are my parents and my siblings. We wanted to play somewhere safe where the war wasn't so obvious. What about you?" Sago didn't know he was broaching the subject he'd decided to avoid for his bug catching helper friend.

"War?" The yellow jackal repeated and frowned, because he had no knowledge of war. Even though he was a jackal who had once been convinced he was a lion, he was still a jackal, and a rogue, at that! He was not involved too much in the affairs of the large cats anymore. He didn't even respect their pridal borders! "No, I wasn't paying attention." He admitted, having been too preoccupied making sure none of the adult lions over there came to chase him away.
"My name is Simba." a strange name for a jackal, but he came from a strange family.

Vassago said the nonlion's name in his head. Simba. "I like it. Siiim~baaaa~. The baaa~ part is the best. It's almost like a clash of thunder. I like thunder. You can call me Sago. My siblings do."
Sago arranged the captured bug more securely under his paws. "You don't have to worry about the war. Mom and Dad said that it was okay to play here for the morning. It's not too far from the pride border, but with Mom and Dad protecting the area we can all have a little playtime before going back to the den. But then we have to be careful."
Tilting his head to the side Sago tried to figure out what the nonlion male was. He hadn't really seen many besides lions or lion hybrids since he was born. He didn't mean to be rude, but he didn't know it was rude. "What are you?"

Because Simba was still a little afraid of being attacked by the cubs parents, he decided he would be very nice and polite, and sat down as the cub talked and sounded out his name. He supposed the 'baaa' part was the best part, too, and nodded. "Okay, Sago." He repeated the cub's name, mostly to be sure not to forget it.
"I'm a jackal." He wasn't really offended by the question, because he figured it was a sill question to be offended by, considering it was being asked by a cub. It was just weird because, a few years ago, he would have replied 'lion'.
"Why is there a war?"

Sago nodded at the jackal part. He still didn't know what that was, but Simba didn't look like a hyena. Though Sago didn't know what a hyena looked like, but he figured they were kind of bigish. Not like a lion, but still. He kind of looked almost like a feline so that was what a jackal was to Sago. A small feline like animal. Not prey. Because it was feline.
"War." Sar twitched his tail and tried to think of a good way to explain war. "War is fighting, but more. It's rough and there have been nappings, both of cubs and of adults too! And it starts with two sides not agreeing with each other, but not like a mom and dad would not agree with each other, but like ... " Vassago sighed. "To be honest, I don't know. I think War was lonily and without friends and threw a temper tantraum and is playing roughly and taking friends for itself."

Simba was smart enough to know what war was, so he didn't quite understand why this cub was explaining it to him. But, ever mindful of the adults nearby, he didn't point that out, and listened politely. He had more been asking why there was a war, apparently in this cub's pride.
"Oh, that's too bad." He responded lamely. He leaned back for a brief scratch behind an ear, maybe he was starting to relax a little. "I hope you don't get napped."

Sago shrugged. The possiblity was so outside his realm of reality that it didn't register that he or his siblings may get cupnapped. Not with Mom and Dad around like they have been. "Mom and Dad are good protectors and fighters, though had is a priest or something like that. He didn't explain it to me very well when I asked about. And Mom usually is vague and then tells us to ask Dad. She says we don't ask him questions nearly as often as we ask her and especially when they have something to do with him. I just think they're being silly, don't you?
"Why are you so close to the war and the pride if you don't know about it?"

He nodded, because it was good that his parents took good care of him. But he also nodded when the cub asked if he thought his parents were being silly, because that seemed to be the sort of reply Sago wanted. As for his question...
"Well, I'm a jackal. So pride matters don't... affect me much." He was a different species, and he respected pride borders about as much as wildebeest, which was to say, not at all. "Y'see, if you think about things like.. say, your pride's territory. It's a lion pride, so a lions territory, it only matters to lions. Other animals don't care, usually. We go where we go." Amusingly enough, hyenas also treated lion territory just as they would treat those of other hyena, and vice versa. It was interesting, but not really important right now.
"So, I guess you could say I'm just here by coincidence!"

Sago liked being a lion, but it sounded like Simba had a good life too. He didn't have to worry about war or anything that had to do with it. Not that Sago worried about it overly much, but still. Traveling beyond the borders of any pride not knowing or needing to know the where one pride starts and another begins.
"So jackals don't have territory? Do you want to share my territory? I don't mind sharing." Sago was sure mom and dad wouldn't mind at all. Especially since Simba was so nice.

Simba shook his head. "I suppose we kind of do, but it only matters to other jackals." He'd never seen a lion care about trespassing in jackal territory! And their territories were usually much smaller.
He smiled at the offer. "Thank you! But that's okay. I'm a traveler, not ready to stop yet!" He said with a nod. Besides, it seemed strange to settle down somewhere that was supposedly in war, even if it was just a lion war.

Vassago was kind of disappointed that his new friend didn't want to stay with him. After all, the others that Sago considered friends all slept in the same den with him, so not having a friend as close as that was not a nice feeling. It was kind of weird.
"Where are you going to go next? Are you visiting somewhere or someone?"
