Regulus looked down at his three beautiful children... two boys and one girl! He had been nervous before but now that they were all here, living, breathing flesh his nerves had only grown. What would he do if it turned out he wasn't good at this? Through his journey's around the world he had seen and met many soquili who had been 'damaged' in some way by bad parenting and neglect... so he knew he wanted to do the best he could!

Something above them caught his attention... the stars. It felt like forever since he had let them lead his life, allowed them to take him on the path that he was destined to travel. It was hard but he dragged his eyes away from them, now was not the time to be wandering... even if the pressure and guilt that those who he would have met would be left damaged or worst dead due to him not caring for them. The knot in his heart was twisting.... he was torn between two things that he wanted with all his being.

Sighing he returned to his children with a small smile upon his features. "Ok... let's take our little treats back to your Mama!" They had had another 'lesson', about what fruits and foods were good and which were poisonous. As always Regulus skipped over the poisonous parts quickly, giving the facts for never wanting to scare his little ones.

Phoenix looked up at his father, looking to glowing eyes that matched his own. Out of his siblings he was the only one to inherit them completely, he was also the only one who hadn't inherited any unicorn features.... that didn't mean he didn't have unicorn blood, he had noticed his wounds healed a little faster and better than his mothers... but it was nothing in comparison to his siblings.

Still Phoenix prided himself on always trying his best, on doing everything to the best of his ability... even if it was simply to show he was good at SOMETHING! In his mouth was his little 'gift' for his mother, it was a bag made of a leaves and inside were some winter berries that had looked rather delicious. He just hoped his Mother liked them.

With a smile upon his lips he looked at Sin, the leaf bag held tightly between his teeth. Doing his best to talk he tilted his head and asked; "Wh't d'd 'ou g't?" (What did you get) It was mumbled and disorganised due to the precious present.

Sin looked over at his brother having spent most of the lesson bored, his father always skipped over the interesting parts. Looking down at his hooves, having found a large leaf to carry the food in, having found an apple and some berries to take home to their mother. "Not much." His ear twitching as he looked down at his bundle needing to find a good way to carry it so everything didn't roll off. Looking round, winter not leaving many things as options . Spying his father's tail and wandering over. "I'm gonna borrow this, kay?" Not really waiting for an agreement before he started tugging the cloth off of his fathers tail, thinking he could use it like a sling to carry things in. His father would get it back later. Wondering if Keilani had gotten anything more. getting the cloth off finally and putting his head through it so it hung like a loose scarf about his neck, walking over to his little hoard. "Hey Kei what you got?" Looking at his sister as he worked out how to make this work, soon starting to place things into the sling he had 'borrowed'.

Keilani, unlike her brothers, always listened raptly whenever her father gave them one of their lessons. This was due in part to the fact that his unicorn blood ran strong within her, (and she idolized him for it) but also because she was without a doubt daddy’s little girl. Trotting alongside her father’s flank happily, her brothers momentarily forgotten, she regarded the unicorn with adoring eyes. Catching him in a thoughtful moment, she thought nothing of trying to catch the attention she so craved from him. “Daddy, what are you looking at?” Kei’s notice was drawn away quickly, though, when her brother Sin asked what she had gotten for their dear mother.

Smiling brightly, she picked up a small wrapped package that had lain at her feed, bringing it over to the colt so he could see. “I found some berries! The pretty purple ones, like Daddy said!” she chirped, seeming exceedingly proud of her acquisition. The young unicorn had, with some assistance, wrapped the fruits neatly in a few leaves, and had even tucked a small flower in with the package. She sincerely hoped her mother would like the present. Keilani had always been the sibling most keen on pleasing others, especially those whom she loved. Her family was her world.

“D’ya need any help, Sin?”

~

Reila couldn’t help but worry whenever Regulus took the children out of their home for his lessons. They were valuable lessons, granted, and she trusted the unicorn with her life and more, but it was a motherly instinct that she simply couldn’t kick—not that she wanted to. The couple had had their hands full with the three since day one, she mused, thinking of the many sleepless nights they’d spent taking care of them. Sin, Phoenix, and Keilani were a handful. They were excitable at best, and troublemakers at worst. Still, the mare wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Exhaling softly as she waited for her darlings to return home for their dinner, she looked to the stars. A wave of nostalgia rolled over her, making her shiver. She’d met Regulus on a night just like this one. Little did she know that the one meeting would result in... well, this. The joyful tones of her children’s voices were echoing just ahead. They were finally back, and the mare stood up from her reclining position to greet them lovingly. “You took so long I was afraid a skinwalker had gotten to you!” she joked when they were in earshot, a gentle smile spread across her face.

"Of course." He said to his elderest, Sin, as the colt untied the golden material around his tail. It felt oddly cool when the air hit that spot, it had been tied up for so long. Still, if it could aid his son he didn't mind. Regulus couldn't help but note the keen and cunning look that crossed Sin's features. He was intelligent that was for sure.

Regulus smiled down at them and allowed his eyes to linger on his daughter. She reminded him so much of himself... except maybe her hair colour, that was mostly a hint of her mother. He just hoped that he could be worthy of teaching and training another with such strong unicorn blood. Part of him knew that his sons were disappointed with their lack of horn.... or at least that was the impression he got at times, but he was sure that his blood coursed through them enough that they would heal themselves naturally faster than regulars.

At Keilani's question he smiled a little wider at her, "Just the stars my dear." He brought his head towards her ear, so close that he could smell her delicate scent. "They do not compare to you though." And with that he nuzzled her softly.

His attention shifted again though as they approached 'home', it was strange to have a place to call 'home'.... he had always been a lone traveller, a healer. But now....? Things had changed, but his skin still iched with his desire to help others that he felt torn at best, broken at worst. A quiet sadness lingered in his eyes, even as a smile lit up his lips at the mare he loved voice. Regulus didn't say anything, he never knew what to say but he was happy to see Reila again. She really was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.... and considering how much he had seen that was saying a lot.

Phoenix saw and listened to what his siblings had collected and couldn't help but feel like his gift was severly lacking.... too late now. Turning towards the path and making it seem as if he was more focused on it than anything else he allowed his mind to wander. Had he simply been lazy by finding only one type of food? And unlike Keilani the berries he had collected had had nothing to do with today's 'lesson'.... great. Not only did he have a disadvantage in terms of his unicorn blood he was also not that great at thinking things through it seemed.

He sighed deeply just before he heard his mothers voice.... Mummy! She was just like him, he didn't feel 'odd' around her. Enthusiasm bubbled within him as he increased his pace and ran towards his mothers voice. It didn't take long for her to come into sight. "M'ma" He called, his voice still muffled due to the little parcel of berries that he held. "N' sk'w'ker w'll e'er g't m'!" (No skinwalker will ever get me) He said proudly as he held his head up high. He wasn't afraid of skinwalkers, surely they were just stories told to scare young foals anyway? They seemed too terrible to truely be real.

"I h'e a g'ft 'or y'u!" (I have a gift for you) And with that he placed his precious parcel on the ground and beamed up at his mother. "I hope you like...." He added a little nervously, looking away as a soft pink blush covered his normally golden features.

He couldn't help the snort that escaped him at his sister question, not sure why she thought he would need any help, especially from her. "Why would I need your help?" The unguarded question as blunt as things ever were with Sin. Not stopping to think about it or the harm it could have done, placing the last of the fruit in the sling and starting to walk. Wandering along the path with the others, trailing at the back, looking over the plant and thinking over the things his father hinted at but never really told them. The things that really interested him. The rest he had little to no interest in, sure antidotes were good to know, especially when one had an interest in poisons.

He didn't really bother paying attention to his family, his brother would be cheerful and eager to get home, his sister would be doting over their father. Wandering up after Phoenix had placed his gift down for their mother, setting the cloth with the fruit held in it by her feet. "Enjoy, just give dad the scarf back after ok..." Wandering off once he was done leaving his gift for her, letting their sister come up, finding a place in sight to flop.

Closing his eyes he just rested his chin on his hooves and sighed, going back to focusing on the poisons he wanted to learn about, those were at least something he could get control over, if he just learnt about them and the cures for them. He would have to find someone other than his father though, his father would never answer his questions, that much was clear from how he avoided the topic totally.

Keilani could feel the heat rising in her cheeks when her father complimented her, nuzzling him back affectionately. The expression in her eyes never wavered; out of her siblings she was the most like their father in both appearance and temperament, though whether it was because the unicorn blood ran strongest in her was debatable. When Sin brushed away her offer of help, the filly merely blinked a few times, shaking her head slightly as she returned to her father’s side.

“I dunno, looked like you were having some trouble for a second there,” she said simply. Having two older brothers had made her grow accustomed to their rough ways, after all. Besides, if they ever became too much for her, she’d always just run back to her father, the gentlest of them all. And this she was content to do all the way back home, until she broke off at a run to greet her mother. “Mama, take mine too!” she exclaimed, appearing next to Phoenix with her own present, nearly running into Sin in the process. The foal placed her bundle down and reached up expectantly for her greeting kiss, her horn clinking through her mother’s pretty jewelry as she did so.

Satisfied, Kei turned to lie down next to Sin, sighing happily.

~

No sooner had Reila opened her mouth to speak was she greeted by a sudden thundering of hooves—her three children were coming to greet her, and she could see now that each came bearing gifts. She could feel her smile growing at the thought that she was never too far from their minds, even when they were away from her physically. “You shouldn’t have, my darlings, these are wonderful! Thank you.” Reila leaned down to kiss each of the foals on top of their heads, barely just missing Sin as he’d turned away before she could reach him. “I will remember to,” she called after him, her tone appreciative.

Her eldest son had always been the most independent one, she thought, smiling ruefully as she watched him lie down in a corner by himself. One day she was afraid he would just up and leave them, though that day was hopefully very far off. Phoenix, on the other hand, favored her, and she couldn’t help but feel her heart melt a little at the young colt’s nervous offer. Reila nuzzled her middle son on the head gently, as if to reassure him. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything, my dear,” she murmured, before turning to express a similar sentiment to her daughter. While Keilani clearly favored her father, she made an effort to love everyone just the same, even her oldest brother.

They were, in many ways, a motley crew, but they were first and foremost her family—her moon and stars. Reila straightened up in time to see Regulus enter the room, rounding up the children. She smiled at him lovingly, before speaking. “Now that we are all here, it’s time for dinner!”

Regulus watched as his children went ahead to see their mother, each was so different that he wondered where their personalities came from. Bar Keilani he couldn't see many correspondance with his own. He was shy and lacked most social skills... though it was easier with his children.... yet Phoenix didn't seem to be marked by that, like his mother perhaps? Sin had a confident swagger about him that he wasn't sure the colt even knew about. And Keilani? Well she was quiet and intelligent just like him. Regulus couldn't help but feel that he would one day have to leave her.... it was part of the reason why he wanted to help and guide her as much as he could for as long as he could. He owed her that much, even as it broke his heart just thinking of leaving her... of leaving Reila... of leaving any of them.

He stood back for a while, just watching and observing his little family unit. The smile on Reila's face lit up his heart and reminded him exactly why she had managed to crack his shell, to see the fragile creature that lay within him. Sure he had gone up against skinwalkers, healed evil kalonas and even been in a war as a medic.... but none of that compared to the pure fear he had at allowing someone close to him, allowing them to see 'him'. It probably didn't help that he usually travelled a lot, his job taking the lead for his entire life, but it was because of that that his knowlegde and power was so strong. It has also allowed him to learn multiple languages. He knew the native tongue of this land as well as English, French, German even a touch of Japanese.... even if each was a little rusty from lack of use. His English had actually helped him once.... a usdia couple. He smiled remembering them.

As Reila gave him a task he smiled softly, nodded his head in acknowlegdement before heading off to Sin and Keilani to bring them back to their little group. Regulus couldn't help but allow Sin his 'freedom' and 'space', especially since he himself had never really sought company. When he was close he lowered his head so that he could see his son more clearly. The flower mark upon his cheek didn't make him look in any way feminine, though it did always remind him of their mother. "Sin. Keilani." He said, looking over the colts shoulder to Reila and Phoenix. "Are you ok?" He said with a soft smile as he returned to look at Sin and then Keilani, he was concerned over his son's attitude sometimes, fearing that he was somehow not getting what he needed to be 'nurtured' despite the love his parents had for him; but he was thankful that his daughter always tried to help him. Regulus really wished there was something he do to 'connect' with his eldest... perhaps one day they would find common ground.

After a moment he added, "We should join your mother and siblings for a nibble." Regulus was often unsure about how to say things, speaking so much and freely about things other than healing and medicine was still so strange to him.

Phoenix grinned at his sister as she joined him, and leaned over to nibble her ear affectionatly before she went to join Sin. He knew that Sin was sometimes a little 'harsh' on her, him too if truth be told, but he knew their brother loved them both dearly... it was simply his way. And just as Phoenix knew he would do anything to protect both siblings he suspected Sin was the same, and with two brothers to protect her she would never get into trouble... or at least Phoenix hoped not.

His eyes wandered to the three little piles of food, together they had actually gathered quite a lot... which was probably why their mother wanted to share and have dinner now. Why waste anything? He had learnt that from their father.... wastefulness was a shame, and went against nature. There was never a need to take more than you actually needed, for someone else may need it too. Still he felt a soft rose blush cover his cheeks, both of his siblings had gathered more than him.... oh well, there was no need to get too worked up about it he guessed. With a chirp in his voice he spoke to his mother; "I will always protect you Mummy... and Keilani too," He beamed at her, but then frowned a little as a thought crossed his mind, "....but no boys for Keilani." He didn't know why but the idea of his sister with other colts or stallions made him feel very protective.

That thought shattered though when his stomach growled and he thought about having dinner; "Oh... food!" He smiled and eyed the food again wondering what he should try... maybe those berries his father had showed them today?

Sin looked up and at his sister after he had flopped onto the ground, part of him surprised she had joined him, but then if he could have read her thoughts he might have been laughing at the idea of Phoenix being rough, his brother was too kind hearted to be classed as rough in Sin's opinion. As it was he shrugged and put his head down again, not having been having any trouble before but he wasn't going to make a fuss over it, he just frowned a little wondering if he really did look as hopeless as she made him sound.

His head lifting again wondering why all the attention was wandering over this way as he came face to face with his father, guessing that it must be because his sister had settled here with him after nearly running into him. Nodding and standing at the call for dinner. "Sure." It not really clear if he was answering sure to the food or sure to being Ok, or both, either way he started to walk, back towards his mother and brother. Agreeing with Phoenix. "Yep, no boys for Kei, will save me having to stomp them when they do something dumb and she gets upset." Not looking at anyone as he says this, his tone blasé. Stopping next to his brother, his expression making it kind of obvious that he would protect his mother too, though he also thought that he wouldn't need to as his father was the more likely one to do that. Having presented himself for dinner he stood quietly waiting for the others to come as well, he might not say much, and his manners might not show all the time but he did listen and take things in, and so like a well mannered colt (which is not what he usually seemed) he stood and waited for all the family to gather before even looking at the food they would share.

“I’m okay Dad!” Keilani chirped when prompted by her father. She was almost always ‘okay’—with a loving family like the one she had, who wouldn’t be? Sometimes she’d gotten her feelings hurt, or ran into trouble, but it never lasted long when her brothers were quick to her rescue and her parents were always there with loving support. The filly couldn’t have asked for more—they had all the makings of a perfect family. What would happen to her if for some reason, they had to split up?

She got to her feet quickly, suddenly hungry at the mention of food. “Let’s go, Sin!” she said, nosing her older brother gently before moving to settle closer to where their dinner was. She wrinkled her nose at Phoenix’s and Sin’s words. Boys were still pretty gross to her, but you never knew when that could change. In any case, she knew her brothers meant well, even if it was sometimes a pain like the subject of boys was playing out to be. “I love you too, guys,” she mumbled, staring somewhat darkly at the selection of fruits in front of her. There was nothing else to say—she’d simply wait for the rest of her family to gather.

~

Reila couldn’t help but chuckle at the exchange that had unfolded between her children as they all gathered around for dinner. It was always reassuring to know that they loved each other, even though it wasn’t necessarily apparent by the way they treated each other sometimes. It calmed her to know that if something happened to her or Regulus, heaven forbid, they would at least have each other. Keilani would always be protected, with two older brothers, and the mare knew that her daughter was more than willing to return the sentiment in her own way.

It was with this thought in mind that Reila turned to Regulus, seating herself next to him easily before pecking him on the cheek. There wasn’t anything she would trade for the family life they’d settled for, though she knew that it had been a huge change for the unicorn she called her lover. Hopefully, it was meant to stay.

She’d spent a lot of time earlier gathering fruits and plants for their family dinner; where Regulus’ knowledge on herbs and medicines was extensive, Reila could hold her own as far as determining what was edible. “Dig in!” she urged shortly when all had gathered, her no-nonsense tone indicating that she expected all of the food to be gone by the end of dinner. It was only after everyone had started eating that she began to eat, herself.

Regulus settled beside Reila, happy that now they were together he could slip into a much quieter tone. It was far more natural for him. Still, he found he rather enjoyed when his family spoke and played and talked.... strange how things worked out.

Waiting until they all started to dig in, he finally taking a mouthful himself. He had to admit, Reila had talent for finding the most tender and succulant fruits for them to eat. This was the life, so very different to the one he used to hold... wandering for days in search of what the stars had sent him to find, sometimes neglecting food, sometimes giving his food up to his patient and going hungry... yet here... here he seemed to live a life of plentiful, a life that was nothing but goodness and joy, peace and happiness, in the back of his mind he knew it could never last, all good things had to end eventually.

Kissing Reila back he found himself saying, "Mhmmm.... delicious." Manners were certainly something he hoped to install in each of his children.

Phoenix wiggled his little tail, a flop flop flop on the ground as he tucked into lunch. Still, between mouthfuls he found himself chirping. "Sin will have to beat me me to get to any boy that hurts Kei!" In this he was determined, he may not be the strongest, may not have much unicorn blood unlike his siblings but he could stand up for what he believed in, could help his family out if they let him! And he would!

Taking another mouthful of food he looked over at his mum and smiled, "Yummy! Than-you"
