Cataclysm circled around in the sky, letting the wind rush through her mane and wings. She closed her eyes briefly as she caught a great upwind: she loved the feel of the sky all around her as the wind picked up and lifted her higher. She positioned her wings at just the right angle that they caught the breeze and she glided in slow, tumbling circles. But even has fun as this little excursion was, she was bored. Perhaps bored wasn't the best word for it: she was restless. Things had been pretty quiet on the herd front over the past few months. This was a good thing for the herd, but she had began to feel stale.

She had very rarely travelled outside the headlands except with her sister: her sister she was growing further and further away from by the day. She had even asked her to come with her on a good, long, fly… only to be rebuffed. It was sad, really. She had seemed depressed since her life mate left - the horrible life mating that Cata has had been bitterly jealous of for years. But now that Wild Wind was out of the picture, she thought things between her and her sister would be better! But no… her once best friend was more like a stranger to her now.

Making his way through the rocky outcroppings of valley, Heinrich watched a strange shadow circled overhead, circling like a buzzard. Having spent the majority of his life as a jackrabbit sized bait for hawks and eagles, the awkward creature ducked skittishly and darted his eyes - taking his brain a moment to remind him that he would now a stallion-sized monstrosity and didn't need to duck and cover at every little sound and shadow.

He snorted and looked up, squinting into the sunlight. He could just barely make out the outline of winged mare circling lazily above him. He curled his lip in irritation as he tossed his mane and continued on, hoping to ignore her.

Cataclysm's gaze dropped downward as she heard the steady thump of horse hoofs on the ground. She caught site of a stallion - a strange one from the looks of it. She circled slowly down in a loopy spiral motion, looking him over. He had horns - no… antlers - like those cerynei she had heard about. But most fascinating for Cataclysm were the wings tucked on his back. With a nearly predatory smile she landed on the rocky ground near him - close enough to be noticed but with enough distance to make her arrival obvious.

vonCoren rolled his eyes as she landed. "Can I help you?" he scoffed out, turning his attention to her. He looked her over: she seemed simple and non-threatening enough. She wasn't a spring chicken, but not so long in the tooth to be unappealing to the eye. Her coat looked clean and healthy, and she seemed fit - probably from all the flying. It was still very unsettling for vonCoren to speak to these horse-things. Especially since he was considerably larger and bulkier than the lean mare.

Cataclysm held her head high and confidently. Even through the other stallion kept walking, she kept her pace with him. "Maybe," she said, gaining a bit of ground. She looked at him closer now, noticing his long rabbit-like ears and fangs. Odd indeed. "I have a question for you, sir. This terrain is terrible and the skies and warm and welcoming. Why walk?" she said with a sneer of disdain.

vonCoren couldn't help but look just a bit surprised by her question. "Huh?" He ruffled the feathers on his wings as he seemed to contemplate his response. As a little Wolpertinger his wings didn't do much but help them flutter around. Kind of like a chicken: he could fly up to low overhangs or small bushes and the like. But she could never really fly. Of course, now that he was a stallion, his wings were much larger and his muscles stronger. But he had never tried… he couldn't think of a way to practice that didn't involved him looking like a fool and/or jumping from a high place. "What's it to you?"

"Just curious," Cataclysm said with a roll of her shoulders. She ruffled the feathers of her own wings for emphasis, letting the feathers reflect the shine over her long flight feathers. "Don't you find it invigorating? To let your hooves leave the ground and fly around with the wing in your mane and the sun on your back?"

She tilted her head she spoke to him, taking in more of his bizarre features. He was really unlike any Soquili she had seen before. Antlers like a cerynei, ears like a common jackrabbit, soft feathered wings that reminded her of an owl...

"I'm the Alpha-in-Waiting for a herd up in the mountains," she continued, "We are the Chosen of Thunderbird, and we revere the gift the gods gave to us to fly. Don't you think so? That the ability to fly is a gift?"

"I guess," vonCoren mumbled almost inaudibly, keeping his eyes ahead, already not liking the direction this conversation was heading. Obviously this mare loved to fly and he didn't want to get wrangled into an invitation to her herd - or even a fancy flight by her side. He didn't wan't to admit that he wasn't even sure he could fly.

Even worse, what if she tried and failed? Fell flat on his face and crashed into the hard, rocky ground? Forget whatever physical injury may occur, his pride would be shattered into a bits. He could nearly feel the burn of the embarrassment sting his ears just thinking about it.

Cataclysm kept her pace next to him, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Hmmm...okay," she said with a shrug. "You don't seem to think so. May I ask why not?" She looked around the rocky landscaping around her and shook her mane. It was nothing compared to the beautiful, rich, mountainside which she lived. She couldn't imagine why anyone would voluntarily live in such a desolate place: especially when when their wings may grant them respite.

"Look, kid," he said, stopping and squaring her gaze on her. The mare looked intelligent enough, and why he was sure she might be a pleasant companion to someone else, "I just want to be left alone, okay?" He sneered, mostly in frustration with himself. He was a horrible conversationalist, and he didn't want to sound like he was trying to be overly mean or harsh, but she wasn't taking his subtle hints well.

"Hey, sorry!" she snapped, stopping suddenly in her tracks as he finally looked her directly in the eyes. "I'm just trying to offer you an incredibly generous opportunity," she spat, her fur in her body standing a bit on end. She was obviously miffed at his rebuttal, and she jerked her wings out form their rested position at her sides, preparing to take off.

Feeling a bit guilty, vonCoren began to make his feeble attempt at damage control, "Look, kid..." he said, trying to soften his expression. He hated feeling awkward and uncertain in his own skin - but this seemed to a perpetual state for him every since he had eaten those damn biscuits. "I'm sure you're a fine mare and an excellent flier and all that - and you herd is probably great and all, but its just ... not for me, okay? Thanks for tryin' though."

"Yeah, well...." her anger was a bit subsided, but she still thought the stallion must be a fool for dismissing her so quickly, "I would say if you ever change your mind to let me know, but I don't know if you'll ever see me again or not," she said with her old haughty lift of her nose. She tossed her braids in her mane and shrugged her shoulders.

"Maybe you'll get lucky again," she said as she flapped her wings and lifted herself off the ground. Taking off from a dead-stand-still was hard and took effort: but she felt definitely in the mood to show off now. "But maybe not. Adieu." With a flick of her tail and a flap of her wings she was off, flying into the distance.

vonCoren rolled his eyes as she flipped her hair and stopped her hooves like a little spoiled foal. He stared at her blankly as she took off and began to fly away, finally allowing himself a sigh of relief. "Good riddance," he said under his breath when he was sure she was out of ear-shot, then continued on his way.
