Depleted.

It was probably the one word to describe the batwalker hanging upside down from a tree branch. Her wings folded tightly against her body. Terra Stryker had been tracking down leads as to the whereabouts of a certain carnival or its crazy leader and she had so far been unsuccessful. Even though she had actually stumbled across two Soquili that bore the Blood Moon mark there had been little to nothing gained from her encounters except possible rumors. Now her meeting with The Croatoan: that might have proved more useful. He had at least provided her with a sense of direction to travel in.

Shifting the bulk of her weight Terra let out a series of squeaks and listened for the replies. Her ears twitched as they caught the different pings return. A map bloomed in her mind as she listened and soon she unraveled her wings. The darkness of the night shrouded Terra in darkness and the batwalker was at least grateful for this small blessing. The darker the night the more easier it was to pass unawares over roaming Soquili. Maybe she'd even find time to hunt later. With that decision made Terra started winging her way in a new direction. She'd fly for a bit before transforming. It was the best way to operate.

User Image Barker held the 'wolf' up using her claw for inspection as he sat on the ground. "What a shame..." He murmured, looking at the wings that from a distance had seemed so real. A wolf with wings! What a sight! But he wasn't lucky enough for that... perhaps one day he would be. He looked at the necklace that was currently holding the creature up on his hook, it was pretty.... worthless to him... but pretty none the less. Even her red eyes and fangs didn't impress him. A vampire wolf? That was no comparison to what he had lost.

He growled at the memory of that night. "Terra." He hissed, tossing the wolf away like the unwanted play thing it was. He would have to find a new attraction soon... or perhaps he should simply go hunting an old one? The issue with that was before the batwalker had been relatively placid, not really understanding what had happened to her or the nature of what he had forced upon her. Skinwalkers by nature were visicious beings, but he was a Kalona, and Kalona's were far more calculating with their evil acts.... he had never known a skinwalker to curse an innocent simply for their own sadistic pleasure. And he had been pleasurable, watching her squirm and struggle, watching as she scared those worthless customers of his into peeing themselves, even as they begged for her to weave her way through their hair. But that was his job.... to make them want more, to scare them to the point of nightmares and still have them begging for more. User Image

It was a talent that few possessed, that few still actually cared about. But this was all a cover for him, a way to achieve his great goal.... to avenge those who had detroyed his family and the original carnival. That night had made him cold, heartless, a walking nightmare with an iron hoof... and now that he was set upon this path their was no going back.

It was for that reason that he pursued the wolf once more. A vampire wolf would draw a crowd for now, at least until he bigger and better attractions to replace what had been released. One step at a time, he reminded himself, one step at a time.

In the end it didn't matter whose life he destroyed. Or who he hurt. All that mattered was that he found what he was looking for..... and the soon he did that, the better for everyone.

She'd taken to the sky with the intent to hunt but something was distracting her. She was flying relatively low in order to not miss a potential meal. The creatures she was used to hunting in this form seemed to have dug deep into their burrows as if something was keeping them out of sight. This intrigued the batwalker. A large portion of her vision map was suddenly blocked by a very large object. With the grace of her species she swerved out of the way of the object. She chittered angrily. This object seemed to be the reason behind her inability to find anything to hunt.

Frustrated Terra swung into the nearest tree and blasted the object with her echolocation. An image bloomed in her mind of just what she had almost run into. Something triggered a memory in her mind and the batwalker almost fell out of the tree in surprise. Here she'd spent all this time and energy to locate Barker Hook and seemingly she'd almost run into him. It was a good thing she'd swerved around the Carnival leader. Now she flattened herself along the branch she had claimed for her perch before using her squeaks to get an idea of what was going on. She had to use this chance to study her enemy. Gripping the tree branch with the claw tips of her wing Terra began to stalk the Kalona that had changed her life - and not for the better.

Questions whirled through her mind at a furious pace. Had Barker recognized her? He'd seen her in her bat form many times. Where was the carnival? Could she win in a fight against him if it came down to that? Since her escape she'd picked up a lot of what it meant to be a skinwalker but Barker was a devious creature.

Barker had been too consumed with his current task to actually notice the bat that had nearly hit him, sure he had felt something bat at his rump, a sudden burst of wind, but he swatted it away with his tail.

His red eyes shone with menace as he approached the wolf, he had allowed his 'butterfly' prey to escape not mere days ago, so his ego simply wouldn't allow him to do the same now. Scenting the air he could tell the wolf hadn't gone far.... obviously trying to burrow in than try to out run him, almost clever, but the worthless beast had forgotten one thing. He had an iron hoof and hook. He would drag it out of whatever hiding place it picked. Yet as the scents around him entered his nose he froze. There was a.... trace... yes.... a memory of his beautiful Terra sprung to mind, her scent was on the breeze, or at least one close enough to it that it triggered his scenes. But he knew better than to believe she was foolish enough to hang around him. After all he wouldn't hesitate to reclaim her given the chance.

Licking his lips he pushed her out of his mind, he couldn't afford to be distracted right now. His goal. His plan. That was all that mattered to him, all that had ever truely mattered.

Venturing forth it didn't take him long to work out where the wolf's little footprints led to. A grin covered his lips, as he suspected it was hiding rather than running... that was the mistake that would soon cost them their freedom.

Terra's nose twitched a little. She had begun to follow Barker Hook rather discreetly. She wanted to know if there was anything that she could ferret out. Weaknesses and the like. She knew that he had a fondness for strange attractions. She thought back to her first introduction of the strange Kalona. She'd awoken to hunger. Insatiable hunger. Barker had looked in at her through a cage and proclaimed that she was a success. A success for what?

The little bat shook her head. Now was not the time to get lost in the past. The countless shows after that meeting haunted Terra as she followed Barker as stealthily as she could. A twig snapping here or the rustle of branches there. These were the only audible signs of her passing through the trees above. Her squeaks constantly updated the vision map in her head as she made progress. She had briefly seen what it was that the Kalona was hunting and Terra felt the hunger claw at her belly. Wouldn't it be too easy to hunt the creature as well only leaving a torn carcass for Barker to find? No ... she couldn't afford to think like that. She'd blow her cover for one thing and this was beginning to rattle the batwalker. Hiding in the shadows, covertly sneaking around. Terra didn't like this one bit. Closing her eyes the bat balanced on a thick branch. Her wings splayed open fully as she listened to the sounds of the forest.

Soon she'd pounce, hidden by shadows of mistrust, to strike at the carnival leader. That would come in time ... for now she could only bear to watch and observe.

Barker used his hook hoof to push aside leaves, branches and earth as he uncovered his little prize. "I have changed my mind." He said, grinning down at the pathetic creature. He would almost feel sorry for it... if he had actually cared that is. To Barker everything was valued simply on its potential to further his cause. A little fanged wolf was far from big prey but it would satisfy his need for now.

The wolf tried to escape... perfect, he was in the mood for a good hunt. Run, run as fast as you can, I will always catch you... for I am the boogy man! He grinned as the little rhyme played in his head. When Barker set his sights on something he was relentless in suceeding.

He allowed the wolf to bolt, his muscles and body already prepared to take up pursuit... and sure enough it didn't take him long to out fox the creature. He was larger, faster, and had done this many many many times before... come on! He was the Barker who had not only housed a skinwalker but had one created for his cause! No other could brag that.

Barker licked his lips as his target neared, and it didn't take long for him hook it in his claw. Slowing to a stop he looked at the creature. "Boo." Was all he said before bursting into laughter. His mind had long since been whole.

The drama unfolded beneath her perch. Terra's echolocation bounced off Barker's form constantly. She was bombarding the carnival leader with waves of sound. Her claws twitched as the wolf was snagged by Barker's hooked leg. This was an interesting twist. Apparently this prey had caught the unfortunate gaze of the leader. Terra's hatred flared as she lit from the branch. Almost methodically she circled above Barker's form before drifting into the shadows. What was so special about this wolf? A surge of jealously flooded Terra's mind. It was a risk but Terra couldn't take sneaking around in bat form. Maybe she could learn something while in her true form.

Flapping her wings quickly Terra flew off at an angle before landing on the forest floor. She transformed into her equine form and began to trace her path back towards the area that was the focus of her attention. What news could she ferret out? The batwalker snorted uneasily. Barker was not an individual to be trifled with. On the other hand ... neither was she.

Terra began stalking Barker on a parallel line. She made sure to stay downwind of the crazy stallion. There was a part of her that Terra suppressed deep down inside. Her fear was flaring and that could make her careless in her tailing. Her wings folded tight against her back; she would not alert Barker to her presence if she could help it.

Barker Hook looked at his latest little catch, sure it wasn't completely an 'actual' freak but he was still sure it would draw a big enough crowd to keep his little freak show in action for a little while longer. He grinned, looking at the detail of the things wings... almost pretty, someone had certainly taken a lot of time and effort to make the things... swan feathers? That was his guess at least. "Perhaps," He smirked as a thought occurred to him, "I can use you to lure Terra back to me." Yes, that had certainly become a side goal of his... a goal born from his dislike of being cheated out of anything, of being bested... no! He would claim her back, he would avenge his family, and with both things he would regain his dignity and pride. Both held great importance to him.

Something caught his attention. He was sure it sounded like... the flapping of wings. For a moment he paused, closing his eyes to focus better, even as he raised his hooked hoof higher so that his latest catch wouldn't escape. His senses flared into high alert and he tried to figure out if there was anything on the air that would reveal the truth to him... nothing, everything suddenly seemed quiet and still. Almost too much so, which made him suspious. Sure enough, his presense as a Kalona was enough to drive away most of the birds and wild life, but to him it seemed almost as if the silence was far more wide spread.... the kind of silence that occured when there was more than one predator in the area. His eyes snapped open, and even as his instincts flared he knew it was only wishful thinking that it would be Terra who was also in the area.

Shaking the thought to one side for now he decided it would be best to get out of the area. Attention back to the wolf he grinned and licked his lips, "Let us go, my little beauty." Grabbing the thing in his mouth at the neck he allowed it to swing from side to side, ignoring the obvious whimpers and calls for help.

He set off back towards the carnaval, not willing to linger too much longer... after all, you never knew when the hunter would suddenly become the prey. And today was NOT a day that Barker Hook was about to become prey!

His gait was slow and steady, the slight off-set limp caused by his leg was not really noticable despite the surprisingly heavy load in his mouth. The wolf wiggled and wriggled in a desperate attempt to be free... an attempt that was sure to fail. Barker wasn't going to let yet another thing he 'wanted' get away. His eyes shone with pain and delight, a strange mix that had helped him earn the title 'Conflicted', no one knew of his true pain though... and he wouldn't have it any other way. No. Nothing would change. Your destiny was your own, you had to take it in your four, or in his case three, hooves and make it what you wanted!

Terra watched and heard all of it. The rage that held her immobile was hard to explain. Why should she even care if Barker had found himself a new attraction? The thought that she should be pleased that his attention would be one something else was squashed. He had created her for his amusement. A rather loud snort of indignation sounded throughout the trees. How quickly would the masses forget about her: about the terror of the Carnival that she had been?

Why was she even still standing in this wretched place. Terra gave a low growl into the darkness that concealed her form. She would not be forgotten this easily. Barker would find out just how vicious she could be. Perhaps she would follow him and destroy this new attraction out of spite. It was a plan, reckless and ill thought out, but Terra was blinded by the thought that she was so easily replaced. 'I'll show him. I'll show them all.'

It didn't take long for Barker to make his way back, catch in his mouth and tossed into the nearest cage. Closing and locking the door he took a moment to simply look at the thing, a grin creasing the flesh of his face. "You'll do.... you'll do." He said, bringing his hook up and running it along the cage. It was something he often did to annoy and rile up his attractions, well, those that had a bite at least. Terra had been such a creature. After all he had enjoyed antagonising the beast, of the control over containing such an agressive being. One day he would again, he could almost taste it.

Looking into the eyes of the wolf he glowered for a moment. "Welcome to your new home." He paused, flashing his teeth. "You may call me master." He laughed, the menacing sound bouncing off the cage and area.

6 MONTHS LATER

Barker was pissed off, beyond pissed off...! Someone had been letting his exhibits loose, making more work for him by destroying his equipment. This was not what he needed right now! The Carousel had been preparing to leave for their next location, to get closer to those that killed his family... yet here he was, forced to linger, forced to redo work that shouldn't have to be redone! This wasn't a joke... was it possible that losing Terra had been a warning to the bad luck that would soon follow?

He let out a roar of anger and pain to the night sky. His eyes shining red out of his black-whites, he wouldn't let the one responsble get away with this for long... and when he caught them, they better be prepared for his wrath!

If Barker had only known that his creation had come back to haunt him. Terra snickered softly. Her campaign to destroy and discredit the once mighty owner of the Blood Moon Carnival was working nicely. The batwalker was careful to change regularly the nights that she would strike the carnival. It would not be wise to fall complacent and visit on the same nights. No, there was no set pattern to what night she'd skulk around in the shadows before striking. There was also no set pattern to the type of damage she would do. One night she might try freeing an exhibit or in reality pretend to before following it as it escaped to make her kill. She could not allow any word of her arrival to get back to the ringleader. Besides, she went to all this trouble it was the least that these pathetic exhibits could pay her back with ... giving her more energy. On another night she might try damaging something to the extent that it couldn't be used.

Hooves though only went so far in providing damage. The claws on her wingtips sometimes helped her try to manipulate a bolt here or there, to lift it out of place, but that was a rare occasion. Teeth and hooves were her weapons of choice in this war she was launching.

Now she quietly winged her way above the carnival proper. There was still the uneasy feeling that this whole campaign was too easy. She'd yet to be seen and from the rage contained in the yell she'd heard earlier on she knew that her plan was succeeding. She was driving Barker to his limit. It was a shame that she couldn't visit a little payback on the instrument of her change but it was far too early for her to even consider taking out the Animal Handler. Terra sent out a loud screech before shifting forms. Tonight ... maybe she'd make the newest attraction her target. The wolf that Barker had caught months ago. Darkness slid around her form as she waited just beyond the reach of the lights from the carnival. She'd strike when it was least expected.

"Let us see who wins this game tonight." The words floated around her as one by one lights began to flicker off. The crowds had left. Her time to act was now. On hooves that were light as she could be she entered the carnival; all her senses on alert.

The entertainment for the evening had ended, and Barker Hook had found his mood only moderatly improved from seeing and watching the terror on his pathetic customers faces. Usually he took far more joy in such things than this, but right now he was distracted with far more turbulant thoughts. With his hook he scored marks into the earth, something he often did when his anger threatened to bubble over. The thing was a constant reminder of what he lost, and now these incidents were making his past come back to haunt him in his dreams.

Sweat dripped from his brow. With a huff and disgruntled growl he decided to check on his precious exhibits.... he used the term precious loosely, a means to an end and nothing more. He needed them though, there was no denying that. It was the only reason he did something a kin to nurture and care for them, he needed them alive and relatively well. Some he kept well fed others hungry. It all depended what he needed from them in their show and what would make them perform for him. He thought of Terra again, his thoughts seemed to be wandering to the bat more and more, something he rather hated. He had enjoyed playing with her.

Dark eyes used to the dark scanned each of the holdings. Silence bar the metalic clink of his hook welcomed him. He smiled. This was just what he liked. The fear that floated to him from all directions was a welcome reminder of the power he held, a power he was unwilling to release just because someone had decided to play games.

Something drew him to stop by the fake winged wolf. The thing had caused quite a stare, gaining the name 'vampire' due to its extended fangs and red eyes. He could live with that. A fan club had been started too, the Angel of Death. It was a laughable nickname really, for in his mind the thing would never been the true Angel of Death. No, that title belonged to someone else, to someone far more deserving. His ears flickered, his eyes moving to scan the tent. Something was... off. He couldn't put his hoof on it but he was certain something was amiss.

He spent only a moment thinking about it before making up his mind. Slinking as silently through the exhibits as he could he found a nice shadowed spot and settled, allowing his magical cloak to settle upon him and cover his off-white pelt. Now he would wait, even if it lead bore no fruit... at least he would know he had done something. Inaction would make him grow old and lazy.

Terra had bypassed the usual exhibits and was delighted to see many of the cages she'd emptied remained in that way. There were still a lot more creatures she could 'free' but for now the more important ones were gone. She'd been cunning; freeing and killing the creatures that might have recognized her. Her hooves impacted the packed dirt, muffling some of her movement. She had to be careful. Her goal tonight was that wolf that she had watched Barker Hook capture months ago. The chatter that had reached her hiding place spoke of a growing crowd wanting to see the attraction. Soquili were coming in droves just to catch a glimpse of this strange wolf.

In her mind the way to really hurt Barker was to make him lose this latest acquisition. The carnival would suffer greatly. Her motions never faltered as she trekked farther into the grounds. She stuck to the shadows though it chafed at her to do so. If word got spread of a sighting of her her game would be over. Terra curled back her upper lip as the scent of many creatures welled up into the air. Her target was fast approaching. The batwalker paused; her wings flaring wide open. Something seemed off. Her mind realized the unusual quiet that hung over the creature exhibits. There would be some silence marked with her passing but this was something else. Terra scented the air and her long ears twisted back and forth, searching the night air for anything that would hint at the source of her uneasiness.

She hadn't fully lost her fear of the carnival but this paranoia was starting to grate on her nerves. She needed to get on with her life and to do that she needed to punish those she believed responsible.
