My friend is terrified of Death Note because she thinks Ryuk was scary. Once, I brought Death Note Vol.3 (the book with Ryuk and a bunch of skulls on the cover) to my school cafeteria table at lunch, and she was like "NOOOOO!!!!! KEEP THAT BOOK AWAY FROM ME!!!!!! THE COVER IS FREAKY!!!!!" My friend doesn't hate manga, though. In fact, she loves it. She just freaks out about Death Note.
Has something similiar ever happened to you?

Not yet, unfortuantly. My friend is scared of the Grudge but not Death Note. Probably because I haven't shown her it yet.
But I don't think Ryuk is scary. He could even be cute.
Maybe some ribbons...Pink ribbons...*Blinkblink* Oh, wait...Uh..You didn't hear that from me... ninja xd

no....i havent meet anyone that was afraid of deathnote....besides my mother....she afraid of a lot of my mangas~ whee

When I first started reading manga she thought it was really weird. I guess she just kinda got used to it after a while. (Although she still really has something against anime). But nobody has ever had a bad reaction to Death Note. A couple time I've had random people come up to me and tell me how much they like it several time though!! rofl

Hmm... My mom isn't afraid of the manga itself, but I bought a "Death Note notebook" (cosplay item. It has all the rules and stuff written inside, and a few pages are "prefilled" with stuff that was written in it from the manga) and my mom found THAT. She freaked. But she didn't know about the series, so I suppose I can understand why she'd freak at finding something like that in her daughter's room.
I explained to her what it was, basically, but she was still pretty weirded out by it. She was all "Any manga that has a book like that in it can't be very good!". I tried to explain the plot to her, but I don't think she was listening at that point.
So, yeah, I don't think she's scared of it, but she REALLY doesn't like it!

My mom isn't the type of person who reads manga, but I made her read Death Note and she loved it. XD I only have volumes one and four in English, though, so she was a little disappointed when I told her, no, I don't have the second volume.

Yeah I Brought Vol 3 to school and my friend freeked out he wouldnt come out of the restroom for like 2 hours....and he got in trouble

My mom doesn't really care if Ryuk is scary or not... O.o;; She has gotten used to my sister and I reading manga...
Hmm... most of the people I introduced Death Note to weren't scared of Ryuk... in fact, most of them wanted to be Ryuk... xp

I don't really get how anyone can be scared of Death Note because of the way it's drawn... The drawing style's not really that scary. The story's very psychological, though, and some people might not like the way it kinda messes with your head while reading the first few books (After Raito gives up the Death Note while being watched, the story becomes more like a story and less like a battle of wits, so I'm talking about it up to that point). I thought it was really cool, though, and I looked at everything completely differently for a couple hours after reading the first and second books at a bookstore. For some reason, I found myself thinking the way Raito would, considerably more observant than I usually am, even though I don't do anything wrong and have no reason to be suspicious of anybody.
