Jordan had actually waited until the day after the mission to Alaska to remind Ofelia about the invitation to spar; by the time he'd finished his report and taken some time to warm up, evening had been rapidly approaching, and he'd decided that it could wait. Now, though, he had several hours with no assigned tasks, and since he'd finished his daily workout in the morning, he felt that this would be an excellent time to get a spar in. He pulled his phone out and checked the contact list; a quick search brought up Ofelia's number. Rown Text to Ofelia: Still interested in a spar? Meet me at the training field in ten if you feel up to it.

Ofelia had been reading, or pretending to read, or just looking at books and keeping her eyes open while she slept, when the phone she'd taken out of her pocket and set on the table vibrated loudly. It shook against the tabletop and rattled itself nearly off the side, prompting the teen to wake the hell up and grab the offending item in a mumbling stupor. She smashed a few buttons, trying to remember what the guide side, and all but leaped from her seat with joy as she scrambled to get to the training ground. She left the book there, at the table, because she wasn't using it anyway. Whatever.Prolixity Text to Jordan aaammmm oon wabbydddjsdj Her lack of tech-savvy was apparent in the return message but it wasn't as though Jordan was asking her to come over and exchange texts or emails - he wasn't a good ol' fashioned brawl. Ofelia could do those and, after her beat-down at Marcus's hands (and her ill-perpared self for the mission), she was ready to at least try and get into her division senior's graces. She hurried along the hall and arrived at the grounds a bit early, the jacket about her waist hitting the back of her legs as she skidded to a stop. Phew.

Jordan raised an eyebrow at the text he got in return. Either Ofelia was over-excited, or her spelling was as terrible as Robert's; he wasn't too sure about the latter, as Robert's spelling was just about the worst he'd ever seen. Maybe Ofelia could also benefit from the spellcheck app his friend had mentioned.
At any rate, the response appeared to be positive, and he headed out to the field to warm up. When Ofelia arrived, he raised a hand in greeting and gave her a friendly smile. "Hey, how're you doing?"

"Howdy Jordan, Ah'm doin' fine. An' how ya be?" A wide grin spread over the teen's face as she walked closer to her fellow sunnie, her inner self all but squealing at this chance to get to have something fun to do. She hadn't been out since their mission together, seeing as it was...a day ago, and she was bored and for want of anything to do. A spar, while it would likely end in her defeat, sounded amazing. Rue wasn't as enthusiastic but she was rather pleased to be in the presence of a gentleman.
"Thanks for callin' me out here, Ah know only a lil' bit 'bout our weapons an' shields thanks ta Marcus. Any info ya can give me would help since people are sayin' Sunnies are basically walkin' targets."

"Doing fine myself. Bored, maybe." The faintly evil grin reappeared. Jordan debated with himself; he should probably go easy on Ofelia, seeing as this wasn't anything more than a friendly spar; then again, she shouldn't get the idea that it was too easy to face off against a more experienced trainee.
Ferros snickered. Just don't let her think you're letting her win.
You're an a*****e.
Yeah, and you're my other half, what does that say about you? the dragon retorted.
Jordan ignored that comment with dignity. "So you had a spar with Marcus, huh? How much did he explain to you? I don't want to be going over things you already know." He chuckled. "Walking targets - well, kind of. Sun division specializes in offensive combat, which means we're getting right up in the freaks' faces and dealing as much damage as possible. It also means we'll be taking a lot of hits in return, since we're getting up close and personal with them. Is your weapon a melee type or long-range?"
By way of example, he summoned Ferros, swinging the massive hammer up to rest across his shoulder. "This is Ferros," he said, his pride in his partner obvious in his face and voice. "We're melee, short-ranged; to do damage, we have to get in close, which leaves us open to attack. On the flip side, though, we train and practice to hit hard."

"He explained a few things b'fore poundin' mah a** inta the ground. Ah woke up in some kinda bed that wasn't mah own an' had some nurse-lady lookin' in at me." Ofelia shuddered at that memory. Losing hadn't been bad because it wasn't like she died (and she was by no means a sore loser), but the whole waking up with a nurse person flipped her s**t. Ofelia hated anything having to do with hospitals.
Be more specific about what you were told so you don't forget it, hick. Oh yes, looks like Rue was more than awake now, and her voice was a nasally nail in the side and back of Ofelia's head. Ugh.
"He told me how ta use FEAR, and how that mah shield will snap after too much damage. Also -" Ofelia shook her wrist and the bracelet seemed to snap before Rue's form appeared on her hands, the bladed knuckledusters sparkling today. It seemed as though Rue wanted to show off to a fine young gentleman. "This is Rue, a knuckleduster set. We're close combat too, an' Ah'm no stranger in hand-ta-hand combat. So....melee." She'd almost forgotten to answer, oops.

Jordan nodded. "Good, that's the basics of it. You and Rue will learn to judge how much FEAR she has left as you get more experience fighting; that'll be important. In sparring, it's better to concede when you're getting dangerously low; in actual battle with Halloween creatures, knowing when you're about to be vulnerable to real injury will let you decide when to retreat or patch yourself up. Or ask a teammate to heal you, if you're lucky enough to have someone with a healing specialty on your team." He smiled. "Always good to avoid waking up in the infirmary. Some of the Life division have funny ideas about experimentation on unconscious people. You never know."
He nodded at Rue, speaking directly to the weapon now. "Nice to meet you, Rue. I expect we'll be seeing your specialty; looking forward to it." He focused on Ofelia again. "Did Marcus explain charged attacks to you?"

....oh lawdy, I think I'm having the vapors. Ofelia looked down at her weapon with an expression of pure disgust the moment she started gushing about how wonderful it was to be spoken to. Why couldn't I belong to a fine, virile young man like that? Why did I have to get stuck with a shriveled, fringed stick like you? The contempt in her weapon's voice was obvious but indeed no different than it usually would be. The only new thing was the....rather sexual tone in reference to the man in front of her and it made her skin crawl somewhat. Hick, tell him and his weapon I say hello and look forward to dancing with them.
Uhh......
Do it or so help me you won't be getting a wink of sleep for the next three nights. Ofelia winced. Rue had a nasty way of keeping her up with curse words and whatever else, and right now she seemed to be in a tame mood. The teen didn't want to try her hand at that.
"Rue says she looks forward ta dancin' wit' ya both, Jordan an' Ferros." Ofelia smiled at the hunter and at his hammer, moving her hands so the knuckledusters could be seen sort of 'bowing' to each of them. "He...sorta explained 'em? When Ah fought Robert Ah just knew ta release when Rue started beggin' for it so it happened?"

Jordan watched Ofelia's expression changing, unsettled disgust shifting into courtesy. Was this another instance of a pair not yet comfortable with one another? He was quietly grateful that he and Ferros had gotten along pretty much immediately.
I don't get it, Ferros said, puzzlement shading his tone. Why would you bond it if you didn't like it? I knew when I sensed you reaching.
I don't know either, Jordan said. Still worried about Robert and Jezebel.
I'd tell her how it was if I could talk to her, Ferros said, tone salted with dissatisfaction.
Don't get too distracted. We've got a lamb to teach.
You started it.
Shush. "When your weapon makes contact with a Fear-based opponent, she'll be able to draw Fear out of them to feed on," Jordan said aloud. "When she's gathered enough Fear, she'll be able to use her charged attack. It usually takes about three strikes. She can hold onto it for a while, but not forever, and she'll be bugging you about it when she's charged, as I'm sure you noticed. It's usually a good idea to go ahead and let her let it out when she's ready for it. If you miss a chance, you may not be able to get the opportunity back."
He studied Rue for a long moment. "Has she or anyone else told you what the weapons were and are?"

"Wait, Rue's sommin' other than jus' knuckle dusters?" It had never once occurred to Ofelia that the talking weapon, the voice in her ear, might have been something before whatever she was now. Quickly she looked down at the shining objects on her hands and shifted them back and forth, her wrists turning side to side as she examined her partner. "Ah had never even thought ta ask, Ah jus' always assumed it was sommin' Ah didn' need ta know."
It was honesty there, that Ofelia didn't know and didn't really care to know. Rue had taken no interest in her of course, so why should she be bothered to return the favor? Affection and interest was best if it was a mutual thing, and casual or careless asking of questions could lead to trouble she didn't want.
I was a Boo Hag. Go on, ask them what that means.
"Rue says she's a Boo Hag, or was a Boo Hag. What's that?" Ofelia looked from her weapons back to the other pair, an eyebrow raised again. Why had her weapon sounded so....hesitant?

"It's better for you to know up front, rather than getting surprised with the information when you can't afford a distraction," Jordan said seriously. "The weapons are converted from Halloween creatures. Ferros was a mechanical dragon. Iron dragon, I know," he said to the hammer before his partner could remind him that he was getting the term wrong.
Ferros huffed but remained silent.
"I haven't heard of that type, so I couldn't tell you about it. She probably remembers very little about what her life was before being a weapon, though she may have some information that can help you out. Ferros and I work together as partners; some weapons aren't as cooperative. Depends on the personality." He studied Rue with interest. "Though now you've got me curious, but I can do research later."

"Ah dun know anythin' 'bout monsters or whatever, Ah jus' always knew Ah could hear 'em an' sometimes see 'em. Beyond that Ah wanted nothin' ta do wit' any of it." Ofelia shrugged her shoulders and looked at her companion, not having much else to say. She should get to know Rue better, really? Maybe she could ask-
I will tell you nothing and you will keep whatever you feel like telling me in the same category. do you understand, hick?
Yup, Rue could go ******** herself. Ofelia was not going to try this touchy feeling thing with her again unless the weapon reached out first. Given their communication track record that wasn't going to happen any time soon and that was okay so long as it didn't get Ofelia killed. "Um, Rue's not the type ta talk Ah'm thinkin' so maybe it's best Ah left her alone. But knowin' she was a Halloween....creature? Ya mean a monster of sorts, or like the things Ah used ta hear? Never knew there were more than jus' those ones." Even growing up she had always assumed it was the same set of voices and monsters following her, not new ones entirely. That caused a shiver to run down her spine.

"A monster of some kind," Jordan agreed. "What you used to see and hear - that's the ones that come into the human world to hunt. But they come out of Halloween; a world, not just a holiday." He studied her expression. "You probably couldn't see or hear them well before, but you'll be able to now."

"Hearin' their voices was never a problem, Ah could always hear 'em pretty decent growin' up. As for seein' 'em, b'fore Ah lost mah eye it was all blurs. Once the eye went Ah saw nothin' but the hearin' got worse." Oh, how it ever got worse. But well, Ofelia wasn't going to dwell on it because that was the past and now she could fight back and punch things. Punching things or lighting them on fire always made it better, make the voices go away.
Anyway, wasn't she here to spar? Talking and learning was all well and good but Ofelia had slightly better things to do then just listen. It would come back to bite her in the a**, her desire to just do all the things instead of actually prepare herself for things, but seeing as nothing had happened yet she was just going to keep doing what she was doing. Unbridled enthusiasm never hurt anyone, right? "S'good ta know that there's a whole world an' not jus' a holiday. F'gures Ah need sommin' else ta fret 'bout."

"Well, now you can punch them instead of worrying about them." Jordan swung Ferros down off his shoulder and grinned. "Speaking of punching things, now that I know you've got everything covered - go ahead, free shot."
