Just what was she supposed to be doing?

Poor Amarilla. Her she was, thrust into a world that she hadn't even known existed until two weeks ago. And to be a part of it she had to sneak out?

The thought of sneaking out had never crossed her mind until now. But finding someone who knew what the heck she was supposed to do was difficult during the day and, once she spent some time doing research, she fond that most of the "terrorist" type things happened at night. She locked her front door. She wasn't technically sneaking out. She lived on her own for petes sake! But it still felt wrong being out in the parking lot at this hour. She pulled the trinket out of her pocket. It looked like a tuning fork, but she found out that it was a hairpeice. A little thing that changed her world.

This was the first time she let the magic take over since first receiving the little thing. As the yellow skirt and white lace formed around her, she once again marveled at its beauty. Such a costume from a tiny thing with a venus symbol on it? She sighed, placing the trinket in her hair so as not to lose it, and began her trek.

Her neighborhood wasn't a bad one. Her grandparents wouldn't have allowed her to live in a place where wild parties were being thrown and things like drug deals went down. Her neighborhood was near the University campus. She guessed it could technically be called student housing. But the other side of campus had been the site of a few unexplained things, so Esquiline decided that was her first place to look.

Camelot was very used to this strange duo of lives that he was being made to live by some unseen power. He had been given his shield some months ago now, and now he felt like he finally knew what he was doing.

Or he had, until he fought that Negaverse soldier.

His emotions threw everything into turmoil. Defending the woman he cared so deeply for had been natural, but it flew in the face of everything he preached. He didn't feel guilty, he didn't feel bad, but there was something there. If not remorse, what was it? He wasn't sure, but he knew he should not have hurt that Nega for retaliation's sake alone.

What did he accomplish, in the end?

His goals needed to stay focus. He was fighting for the civilians, for Earth, and for a peaceful end to the war at hand. One where Negas could be purified, and everyone could return to their civilian lives, lives they had to throw away or worse, just so they could survive.

He was pondering these things as he wandered aimlessly on is patrol, until he felt a power source nearby and recognized it as another knight. He moved toward the feeling, finding he was hopeful for the distraction.

This was just plain creepy.

Everything was so dark and frightening! Esquiline felt a shiver run down her back. There were shadows everywhere, shadows that liked to jump and change shape to play tricks on her eyes. She blinked a couple times, and then rubbed them to make sure that the shadows were just that. There was a feeling in the back of her neck, like someone was nearby. Nah, she was just scared.

But as she rounded the corner, the feeling didn't go away. In fact, it got stronger. Was she being followed?

The next corner she paused at, peeking around it carefully. Hopefully her mind was just playing tricks on her...but she saw someone standing there and stifled a scream. The person was just an outline in the gloom, an unknown. The back of her neck prickled further, and she sprang back from the corner, holding her hand over her mouth while her heart pounded.

Camelot was pretty sure he heard something, but the feeling was what drew him toward her. He followed the sound he was sure he had heard and felt the energy signature growing stronger, until he turned the corner and saw her there.

Apparently hiding.

From him?

"Are you alright, miss?" he asked, blinking at her. He had never seen this knight before, but he at least knew her to be a knight. She had him a little confused by her stunned expression.

He was pretty sure he hadn't done anything to terrify her so badly.

"My name is Camelot, I'm a knight, like you are. Squire of Earth. Is... is something the matter? Is there a youma around here?" That would account for it, he realized, and he looked around for any sign of danger. He would defend her if necessary, of course.

She jumped, releasing her mouth from its prison and jumping back from Camelot. Her mind told her to scream. This guy was strangely dressed and wandering around the dark by himself! She then remembered that she was doing just the same, in an equally as strange outfit.

Besides, he called her miss. Murderers don't call their victims miss right?

A Knight? She blinked, allowing herself to breathe deeply. He was like her. That meant he too was all magical and stuff. Her body stopped shaking, but her heart continued it's erratic rhythm. He had stopped talking, and probably expected her to talk back. That was polite conversation right? It was rude to keep another waiting...

She exhaled, then said "You..just startled me." Her voice came out very small and childish, and she knew it probably didn't help that she had jumped out of her skin.

"What's a youma?" Esquiline asked, then remembering her manners, she curtsied. Yes, the gesture was probably out of style. Yes, she probably looked dumb. But it was polite after all. "I'm..Esquiline."

Camelot watched her in wonder.

He had seen people being afraid before. Of him, of what they were, of the youma and the enemies in the darkness. This, however, was quite different. She looked like she had just seen a ghost, and expected him to do something ghostly and horrible to her in turn.

Of course, he never would do anything of the sort, ghost or not.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. Didn't you feel my aura coming?" He smiled softly at her, nervous because she had been so tense. It was catching, he supposed, and he told himself neither of them had any reason to be so tense.

His body didn't agree, and remained tense.

"A youma is a... well. A monster, for lack of a better term. They attack people, and feed on energy and... ah... well. Starseeds. Which are this little crystals inside everyone that we cannot live without." He imagined if he had to explain one thing he had to explain the others. Which he certainly did not mind doing.

He was much better at that than fighting, most times.

Bowing politely in response to her curtsy, he nodded his head. "It's my pleasure to meet you, Lady Esquiline." Oh yes, he had decided to adopt that term of respect for anyone he met, as he was a knight and in constant service to those around him that needed him.

Now that she could see that he wasn't going to attack or something, Esquline took a moment to give the guy a once over. He seemed older, in face and maturity. His name was Camelot. Well that would explain the Knights Of The Round Table look. His shield was a thing of beauty though, and her eyes lingered longest there. She noticed that he carried no weapon. No sword or dagger or anything! But then, she didn't really have much of a weapon either.

"I am sorry if I was rude. I'm not used to being out here alone at night." It simply wasn't proper! She was a girl, and girls alone were prey to all kinds of unsavory people.

The aura question confused her. "Is it a tingly feeling in your neck?" She had thought that was someone following her, and her body's response to it. "I felt something like that, but I didn't know that we had that power." Power? What power? So far she hadn't seem much by the way of power. They were just two people wandering around the streets at night in funny costumes.

She nodded thoughtfully, wishing she had a pen and paper to take down some notes. Starseeds, energy, monsters..it was all cramming her head very tightly with information. She wanted to curl up into a ball and sift through it all, but manners kept her focused on the conversation.

"So if I have this right." she ventured, taking a step away from the wall and waiting until he was done with speaking before opening her mouth. "Then we have to stop the youma from getting energy and...starseeds was it? What happens if they obtain either of these?"

Of course, his shield was his weapon and he had been very lucky to get it. It was lined with metal in its second stage, though it was still wooden in the center. The Terra Viridis crystal glimmered against the wood, its green standing out and yet feeling like it belonged there, just beyond the red dragon's reach.

"Oh, believe me, I understand. I still don't like patrolling alone at night." He shook his head slowly, just thinking about it. He really didn't like it: it was dark and there were always creepy things lurking. The last thing he wanted to do was be alone, but of course their job required it sometimes.

A lot of the time, really.

"Yes, it can feel like that, a tingly feeling. Or a ah... a pressure in your head, that alerts you to something else being nearby. Sometimes it can feel dangerous, and that means there's a Negaverse or some other chaos agent nearby."

He needed to make a training book, so they could make these things easier to understand. It was so overwhelming and confusing, he knew from personal experience.

"People die," he said, in answer to her last question, "and get hurt. Innocent people. They disrupt life around here, and that life is precious. I serve to protect those that can't protect themselves."

She swallowed audibly, hands clasping her hands to her elbows tightly. "Dying? People actually die?" Her voice came out as a squeak. Oh what had she gotten herself into!?

She didn't want to be responsible for other people's lives. Esquiline had school, and a job, and her family. Her sleep pattern was already disrupted probably beyond repair. Now she had to look after people that she didn't even know?

"So a bad tingly feeling is the Negaverse, who are the bad guys." Her body gave an involuntary shiver. "I'm sorry to ask all kinds of questions. It is probably pretty obvious that I am new to this whole war." A war. Maybe she should avoid calling it that.

The way Camelot explained it, he was a superhero, or a medieval knight of some kind. Well that was appropriate, given his costume. Her costume was a mixture of golds and oranges with lace and things all over. She had to look up the sign that covered her outfit and found out it was Venus.

"You are a Squire of Earth? I'm from Venus. Well, I mean I'm not from Venus you know, but I think my power comes from Venus." She pulled the gold ornament from her pink hair and held it out in front of Camelot. It was about a foot in length, with two prongs pointing away from the heart shaped ring on top. "This thing must be like your shield."

Camelot had gone too far, he noticed, in the first lesson. He frowned softly, feeling bad for her, and guilty for scaring her worse than she had already been.

Maybe he shouldn't have brought up the dying thing. But it was an important part of their jobs. Jobs they hadn't applied for and certainly had not been interviewed for, jobs some weren't sure they could fill and others were quite certainly incapable. But they all had their duties, whether they wanted them or not.

"Don't feel bad about asking questions, especially to those of us who might have answers. We're meant to help each other, I think, or we'd be in a lot more trouble." He smiled at her reassuringly.

He looked at her item, surprised by it, but it should have been worse. He saw some weapons, objects, artifacts: whatever the proper word for them was... he saw some that were not very helpful at all. He nodded his head.

"Keep it close. As you grow, it will be vital. I believe it is not just the source of your power, but its channel. Your item and your planet are very important." He nodded his head, then glanced around almost nervously. He did not want them getting attacked again, and knew two power signatures could be a red flag.

She retracted her hand, turning the hair ornament over in her hands as a raccoon might, examining it. She had done this countless times before, sitting on a rooftop and just staring at the thing, as if it would grown a mouth and tell her just what the heck it was for.

Her smile was warmer, and calmer when she glanced back up at Camelot. "I'm glad that there are Knights like you that help us new folks out. I think I might drown in all of the information!" She carefully returned the hair ornament to its spot in her pink hair, and then clapped her hands together. Now was not the time to worry about people dying. She hadn't even been in that kind of situation yet, so why should she worry about it now?

She nodded, gripping the folds of her skirt lightly. It still felt strange standing in the dark with an almost stranger wearing silly costumes. A stranger might think they had just come from a costume party, But Esquiline knew that anyone with an art history or fashion background would recognize that their costumes came from different eras. This type of person wandering around at night was unlikely though.

"I think I should probably get going. I do have class tomorrow morning." She said, holding out her hand to the older knight. "Thank you again for all of your help. I feel a little better about my situation."

Camelot smiled at her and bowed his head a bit, chuckling. He knew what it was like to feel new, to feel overwhelmed and helpless. But he also knew his own start had been softer than most, and he had more information to go on there.

He smiled at her.

"Ah, I wouldn't want to keep you up too late then," he said, nodding his head. Class? He wondered what she meant, but he knew better than to ask about personal life stuff while powered up. Anyway, he didn't have the right to ask. He didn't know her well enough, for one, and that was too personal.

He smiled.

Maybe they could be friends eventually. He hoped so, as he had already liked her from what little he knew of her. And he was obligated to help her now, as a knight and as a good man. He wouldn't just leave her to flounder.

He took her hand and shook it.

"You're welcome. You can usually find me at the library. If you ever need any help, seek me there and I will. Stay safe." He smiled and nodded his head.

"Well isn't that perfect? If I need help with class, I go to the library. And now if I need help with being a Knight, I can go there too!" The thought of entering the library and picking up a book called "Knights 101" almost made her laugh out loud, but she restrained herself.

"I'll be off now!" she said, turning back the way she had come and waving before walking quickly back to the spot where she had transformed. Her classes started at nine, but her roommate was usually up by seven. A missing Amarilla would certainly not go unnoticed.

Camelot smiled and watching her go. He chuckled and shook his head. She seemed very spunky and upbeat, which he liked a lot in a knight. In a person, really. He looked forward to seeing her again, and helping her if she needed it.

Or if she didn't. Sometimes he could be a little overbearing, and he found that was just getting worse with time and no better. He was a proud papa, all the time, and that meant he fretted and worried endlessly about every knight and senshi he met.

He took a breath and watched her leave, bowing if she happened to glance back at him, making sure she was safe before he took his own leave and turned to head back the way he had come.
