Name:
Varro

Age:
20

Gender:
Male

Sexuality:
Straight

Rank:
Journeyman

At what age did they Impress?
20 (First partner-blooded to Father's Wher at age 16)

History:
A blood and bone Ghenza native, Varro was born into a small family of Wher Handlers. As such, he was presented to their whims, woes and behaviors from a young age; as such with things, the young lad got it into his one-track mind to become the Greatest Handler in Pern History.

While amused at his dreams of being the "greatest and bestest", both Grandfather (Of Blue Kulsk) and his parents (Of Green Nilsk and Blue Carvinsk) did their best to encourage and flower their childs' love of the mal-formed dragons. There was one thing they were insistant upon, and a lesson he had taken to heart:

He was to have no part in that silly herb mixture others were prone to feeding their charges. There was no reason for the Whers to be "better" then they were at Hatching, save through what natural training and the bond between them brought forth. Any hidden talents the beings may have would come forth with due time.

To this end, and with the partner blooding to his guardians' Whers, Varro began studying to become a handler himself. His actual dreams, however, began drifting between Whermaster and becoming someone who could help in times of emergancy (AKA Search and Rescue). But, despite his attempts at gaining an egg for himself at clutches, Varro was rather late in becoming a Handler...not gaining a fertile egg until his 20th Turn. Even then, he was almost tossed out of the cavern when some sliding rocks startled him and, in turn, upset the Queen before him. Only through frantic groveling and apologizing did she forgive him and allow the human his pick of her clutch.

Here afterwards was he sent to stay at High Reaches Weyr after his intital training, though why? Well, mostly for family reasons. Another was the plague outbreak and the influx of refugees that came into Ghenza for safety. Driven by his need not to be bottled up and his frowning down upon the Ghenza way of refusing the outside, Varro turned towards his Grandfather for assistance with his "plan of escape" with the expectance of refusal from the gruff elder. Oddly enough, Grandpapa was more then willing to help (being from the "outside" himself in his long-ago youth days) on the condition that, before he was to leave Varro was to get his hands on an egg of his own.

Not a moment before.

It was about a sevenday or so after he had won the favor of the Queen. A High Reach Rider had appeared with others to take them back to the Weyr. True to his word, Varro's grandfather had approached and pleaded his case before the riders. He told of his grandsons' skills as a budding handler and the need they might have of an S&R trained pair wandering the Weyr, no? Either way, it was with the others that Varro found himself dragonback and Weyr-flown for some reason despite strained relations. How? Even now, he had yet to guess.

In all cases, it soon after he arrived and settled in did his egg finally crack. A lean brown with a bright sparkle to his eyes.

Appearance:
While not macho-man sized or worthy of lifting one hundred pound weights with only his bare hands, he's got some muscles on that frame of his. He's about medium sized (pointing fingers at his fathers' genetics and topping off at about 5' 8") but big boned, which only adds to his broad looking frame especially around the shoulders.
Varro has a face like a wolf, narrow and with sharp eyes colored a rich brown/gold (the gold tends to crop up when he gets angry). His face is made somewhat less narrow, framed by dark gray/light black strands of hair fallen loose from a simple ponytail holding back most of his short/medium length hair.
Attire is simple and workman worthy, especially for someone who works around whers for most of his lifetime.

From his tunic (which is made of a thick fabric) to his gloves (fingerless and also made of a thick leather) all the way to his leggings and boots (also made of the same thick leather). Its coloring is also fairly simple, ranging from a dark brown to a soft gray. The only thing really of decoration in his attire is an earring made by his grandfather as a child, silver and shaped like a dragon wing that dangles from his left ear.

Another point of interest is, along the inside of his left hand and down to his wrist, is a long scar; ragged somewhat in appearance, this marks the first time he was ever blooded to a Wher (this being his fathers' Blue as a child). This is usually hidden somewhat by his glove and can be shrugged off as an accident wound to those who do not understand whers in full.

Personality:
Flaws

Over-reacting - Have you ever had that moment where someone or something caused you to act more dramatic then you should have? Unfortunately, that seems to happen a great deal to Varro; from Emergencies to simply hanging out with his friends, this young Handler can become a great deal more emotional to a situation then what should be professionally allowed at times.

Not immune to the cold - More furs and hot drinks please?! Unlike the natives of High Reaches, Varro is not someone who is use to the cold summers and even more cold winters of the mountain Weyr. To this end, and being in the dark most of the time due to Varrosk's sensitive eyes, he is....well, cold. To this end, don't be surprised to see him wandering around with more then one layer of clothing or with more then a couple of hot bricks stuffed into his bedding. Hopefully, as time passes, he'll gain the weather immunity. In the mean time, he best keep moving on the job and stay warm; getting sick and forced to stay abed is not exactly high on the want list.

Bad-second choices - Not even all the training in the world can prevent a bad choice, no matter how good someone is. Unfortunately, sometimes his reflexes can clash with someone he's currently having a hissy-fit with despite attempts to maintain peace. Could go from a little thing of sending an angry note via flit to punching the wrong person in a spark of temper.

Also, not being able to help someone do to a split-second choice gone wrong can send this young Handler into a state of depression, though he puts on a mask of strength until he is no longer needed as such. To this end, one will often find him bottled up in the Wherhandler weyr with Varrosk being the only company he will allow at the time.

Strengths

Compassionate - Come on, I aint here to hurt ya. Im here to help.... Being Search and Rescue often means coaxing someone out of a bad situation that fear pins them in. To this end, Varro has learned a form of empathy towards others around him. A sixth sense towards the negative, so to speak. Beneath that rough and tumble exterior is a good heart and a strong shoulder to lean on in tough times.

Quick to laugh - Sometimes the best cure towards something is a good chuckle, no? Easy going at times and with a warm smile on his face, Varro is more often ready to laugh something off when the situation does not call for an emotional rush or a serious attitude.

Quick reflexes - Shard it! MOVE IT! Time waits for no being, especially not so when something decides to go south at a moments' notice. This was not a moment to stare, dumbfounded, while someone was hurt or suffering.

Dragon/Wher Name:
Varrosk

Dragon/Wher Image:
Varrosk

Dragon/Wher Personality:
Lean and with lacking traits in the dexterity and strength departments, Varrosk more then makes up for it with a quick mind and loving heart. Protective of His and those His cares about, sometimes they don't even need to be blooded to this young Wher to earn a lick and nuzzle of affection.

Make no mistake though, when serious calls, Varrosk gets right down to business! Being trained of Search and Rescue, he knows time is of the essence and everyone should just stay back to allow them to work! Scrapes? Brusies? Bumps? Scars? Who cares? He's not out for a fashion show! Preening and posing can wait until it's time for a mating run. Balancing out Varro's strength with his mental thoughts, Varrosk is capable of slipping between open spaces to get at something His cannot reach; more often then not, he will either attempt to open the opening more so His and other can come through or pull those trapped out himself if deemed too dangerous (by his standards) for humans.

Outside of the situations, or when the dangerous portion as pasted, Varrosk will lend his shoulder to the humans to cling to much like His would. As seen, Varrosk is a social Wher with a warm spot in his heart for humans. While possessive of His and much of the love his great heart holds is reserved for Varro, sometimes don't be surprised to see this brown come over and give you a quick nuzzle before scampering off.

Why this rider/handler?
Why? Varrosk and Varro balance each other out as the two grow and bond further from the first Blooding. While Varrosk might not have the stamina and strength his Handler possesses, he is quick and has a sharp mind. Someone who is a steady pillar to lean on for Varro when too much becomes too much during a rescue attempt.

Oh, man. I'm reading some great stuff here. I love the stipulation about not using the herb to "improve" his wher. However, there are a few difficulties that need to be addressed.

For one thing, the whole existence of the prison islands is a closely guarded secret. As far as most people know, when dragonriders commit crimes they and their dragons just vanish and occasionally wherhandlers are recruited for super-secret work and rarely seen again. Thus, it is unlikely Varro would have had any ambition to work as a handler at the prison islands.

There is also no reason why he would be sent to train at High Reaches. Ghenza is not impressed with Pern's other Weyrs and would never send a wherhandler to train at any of them because the training received would be inferior and they would be losing still more beasts to "lesser" Weyrs. Particularly if those Weyrs didn't even have wherhandlers to train with.

Also, I'd really like to see one more flaw because I'm not sure being a workaholic, as Varro is described, is really a flaw. It sounds more like he's actually industrious and prefers to be gainfully employed rather than idle, which is hardly a flaw. And while I agree being perpetually cold can be a disadvantage that can definitely affect how a character behaves. However, it isn't necessarily a character flaw. It's more just a problem with temperature regulation that seems only to result in him wearing more clothing than normal.

The search and rescue aspect of Varro's wherhandling sounds like it would be very interesting to see developed more. I'll have to see what I can come up with to let him use that once Varrosk is older.

Better, but I really do need a reason for him to have been transferred from Ghenza to HR, because I can't imagine why that would be done. Matters between Ghenza and HR are tense at best, what with half of Ghenza's last clutch being taken to HR. They would not be pleased to give up even a brown wher at this point.

As far as workaholic, it still doesn't sound like a flaw. I mean, yes it can exhaust him and that's unfortunate, but really it's one of those things that doesn't really have an effect on anyone else.

Quick-tempered has possibilities, but as it is it sounds more like he just gets snarky when annoyed, and that's pretty standard in human beings. Maybe develop how he doesn't care about what others have to say? Though that would probably conflict with him being compassionate. Combined with having quick-reflexes, it sounds like there's the potential for him to make bad split-second decisions, too. Maybe more on that?

I would like to maybe propose a possible reason for him to be transferred from Ghenza to HR.

One: He was a part of the Wherhandlers Union, but some freelancer wherhandlers and decided to move to HR to get loose of their grasp.

Two: Perhaps he's been transferred there to sort of keep tabs on things.

:3 Not sure if allowed to post here or not, but I like Varro and want to be helpful.

Changes look good, make more sense. I can see how his personality has flaws/drawbacks. Yay!

Just for future reference, as this is not posted anywhere and you could not have been expected to know it, but we prefer that only the applicant and staff post in these threads to help us keep track of who's posting and changing what. There is a character critique section of the guild where people can post their characters for critique before posting them here for approval, and anyone's welcome to chime in on those. (You're not in any trouble or anything, but since you said you were unsure, I thought I'd make sure you had a reply).
