It was late morning. It was morning and also very cold because it was still January. Not as chilly as it had been in December, but still pretty low temperatures. A groggy-eyed Wilson reluctantly dragged himself out of bed, donned a new set of clothes, and left his room. His boots scuffed the floor as he made the long trek down the hallway. Normally he would have reverted to his usual habit of walking backwards, but it was still too early for the trainee to attempt such a feat, old habit or not. A half-awake mind made it so easy for Wilson to crash into a wall and conk out somehow. He could conk out later. First he needed some food to fill his empty stomach.

One hand rubbed one of his eyes while the other hovered over his stomach. He yawned again when he entered the cafeteria. Wilson’s mind failed to register the second life form within the vicinity. He hummed a random tune to himself while he strolled between a couple rows of the cafeteria tables. The trainee almost completely missed the flash of white hair—it blended pretty well with the tables okay?—but then he caught a spot of blue. Blue? Wilson stopped, blinking his drowsy eyes before backtracking. He forced his eyes wide open. “Oh, hey Reine.” A pause. “Are you okay?” ...

"How's life?" It must have been the lack of sleep because Wilson actually smiled at his lameness.

Reine probably had an aura of melancholy surrounding her as she drowned her sorrows in, what else, milk. Except she didn't even like milk, so it was really just making her more upset.

As for why, the life trainee was going through some sort of identity crisis, after having her gender questioned- really, it shouldn't be this big a deal, but.. to be mistaken.. for a guy.. it had just never happened before, and even if Reine had never considered herself particularly girly anyway, it came as somewhat of a shock.

Forcing down another mouthful, Reine looked up when she heard someone call her name.

"Hey, Wilson.." She managed a sort of wobbly smile, just for her food fight buddy. "It's.... okay, I guess. You?"

He fought down the last of his sleepy yawns and took a seat next to Reine. While Wilson was still a bit tired, the glum expression on the life trainee’s face was beginning to grab his attention and force away his drowsiness. He propped one elbow onto the table, leaning his face against his fist while he examined the drink in Reine’s hand. It was milk. An unusual choice, since most people he had known tended to abandon the dairy drink in favor of soda or coffee, including Wilson.

It was reassuring to see her give him a smile—shaky as it was—because a smile was better than none. He returned the smile with his own bright grin. There were certain parts of the Christmas Gala he wanted to forget, but Wilson fondly recalled the food fight (sans the terrible ending). “Okay? Not great?” He tsk’d. “I’ve been doing pretty good, but I don’t think I can say the same for you. What happened? Did horrible at one of the training courses?” A wry smile as he ruefully recalled his own pathetic attempts at some of them.

She sighed, and looked up at him briefly when he sat next to her- she was glad for the company, even though she was feeling mopey. Part of her was thinking- snap out of it, be polite, but she couldn't bring herself to. Another drink of milk, why had she thought this was a good idea? Oh right, because there wasn't anything else, other than coffee, and coffee was that much worse. She wished that they'd at least have strawberry or chocolate milk in stock, but beggars couldn't be choosers, could they?

"Not great," she agreed. "Glad to hear you're doing good, though!" Wilson looked a little sleepy, but at this time, that was only natural. Reine was only up because she couldn't sleep; after tossing and turning for hours in her bed, she'd finally given up and headed to the cafeteria.

"Nah, it's not the training courses- though I kind of failed two really badly." That had been some time ago, so that probably called for a re-do, or two, or however many it took, but it wasn't the main issue. "It's more of sparring, I guess," she admitted, sneaking a look at Wilson.

"I sort of just... kind of go a bit too far," Reine explained. "I think I've had to send two people to the infirmary, unconscious."

A pause.

"Although the last one totally deserved it."

After a particular age Wilson had ceased drinking milk. He figured it was probably when he first went to college, where his mother’s tyrannical rants failed to probably reach. Not exactly the healthiest choice to make, but at least he didn’t binge on soda or drown himself in caffeinated coffee on a daily basis. He was perfectly fine with juice and water, although he would have been curious to try strawberry milk. Chocolate milk, sure, but strawberry?

He fought down a final yawn and rubbed away the last of his drowsiness from his eyes. A few minutes after entering the cafeteria, Wilson finally found himself fully awake and ready to be attentive to the white-haired girl.

Hm. So if it wasn’t the training courses, then what was it? The question tugged at his mind, which postulated a few promising theories. Wilson laughed sympathetically and nodded his head. “Yeah, I totally understand failing the courses. They can be pretty brutal sometimes.” More like all the time, some just less than others. “Sparring.” He stared past Reine and into the distance as he recalled his own spars, most of which ended in failure on his part. Not very pleasant.

Then again, sending two unconscious people to the infirmary didn’t sound too pleasant either. “Unconscious, you said?” he echoed, staring at Reine with a skeptical gaze. “Who exactly did you injure? That uh…doesn’t sound too good. Do you have anger issues, or something? Um. Not to be rude or anything.”

"They're terrible," Reine agreed- deathsweeper in particularly had been traumatising, and then there had been the other time when Jordan had to physically carry her out of the arena... embarrassing. Maybe later today she would try again, because now Wilson had brought it up she was intent on finally making it through one training course- no.

All of the training courses.

There was a slightly manic glint in her eye, though that subsided when Wilson spoke again. He didn't seem to enjoy the thought of spars- well, maybe not when he'd beaten people up, or been beaten up... either way it wasn't completely pleasant, though Reine still believed in fighting as a way to hone her skills. She'd just have to.. well, rein herself in a little..

"Uhhh..." Where.. should she even begin, from the first one..? "Well, um.." Reine looked the slightest bit sheepish, then, as if she'd given herself some sort of mental pep talk, she put on her angry eyes and glared at Wilson.

"Dakota." Saying his name felt a little therapeutic. "Because he flipped my skirt! And then insulted me!" It was unclear which the more serious crime was, though the indignance in Reine's tone and the look on her face were good enough indications of whether or not she had anger issues.

Except the life trainee probably didn't recognise it herself.

"What anger issues," she asked, a little frostily. "He deserved it, okay."

He wasn’t very fond of the training courses, but what else could Wilson do? Hit dummies and spar with people nonstop? It wasn’t a very efficient use of his time, not when the courses could help him hone specific skills. Somehow, he managed to continue smiling as he reluctantly remembered his experience doing the Shadow Run with Deryk. He hadn’t even made it past the first wave. How pathetic was that? Most of the other courses he had managed to try a few times, and while he wasn’t bad at them, he wasn’t great either. Wilson would have to do those more often.

Reine seemed unsure of whether or not she wanted to elaborate. Wilson simply propped an elbow on the table and rested his cheek against a fist, patiently waiting for her to speak. His eyes widened a fraction at the mention of his friend. “Dakota?” At first he seemed surprised, but then melted into mild exasperation. Okay, what had the boy done this time? Surprisingly, Wilson managed a straight face a few seconds after her explanation before sighing and burying his face in his hands. Dakota, Dakota, Dakota. What was Wilson going to do with you? “I’ll admit that he definitely shouldn’t have done that, but I don’t think sending him to the infirmary was the best thing to do. Especially since you said you sent two there.”

Wilson smiled apologetically. “He deserved most of it, yeah, but I if you had restrained yourself a bit that would have been better, I think.”

Now, hopefully she wouldn’t get angry.

Wilson's reaction surprised her- w..what, she didn't want him to think too badly of her, why did he look so-- oh, he was reacting to what Dakota had done, that must be it.

"He shouldn't have," She insisted, frowning again. "And well, as much as he annoyed me, I wouldn't have left him out on the training fields to bleed to death or something," she argued. Was Wilson the type of guy to do that.. just leave his opponent out in the open? Clearly someone wasn't getting the point... until.. oh.

Should have restrained herself, huh. Reine's cheeks flushed slightly and she turned back to face her mug. Maybe.. that was true, well, it wasn't like she'd planned to go quite that far, and to be fair, Dakota hadn't backed down either. If he'd said a simple sorry, she would totally have stopped right there. Probably.

"Yeah," she conceded, though she still kept her eyes averted. "I guess, but I mean, it's hard to tell, you know? It's not like I'd know when his FEAR shield breaks or something, and I mean, it was a fair fight, and he lost!" Reine wasn't going to stand for having her skirt flipped, she wasn't that.. what was the word, maybe 'charitable' worked in this context, considering how desperate Dakota must have been to flip her skirt. Surely there were other girls around, other girls who weren't completely flat, she thought, a little bitterly. Whatever the case was, he was stupid and that was that.

He frowned at the idea of leaving Dakota out in the open, bleeding and unconscious. While Wilson was relieved to learn that Reine would never abandon the injured trainee despite the circumstances, he couldn’t stop himself from fretting over the incident. Was Dakota okay now? Was he still in the infirmary? Maybe if he had time, Wilson would try to find him and check up on his status.

Soon as he saw her cheeks turn red, Wilson smiled awkwardly and faced forward, placing his arms on the table and weaving his fingers together. Occasionally he would glance at the life trainee from the corner of his eyes, but for the most part kept his gaze trained on the table. He found it interesting to observe the few stains that dotted the smooth surface. The small smile never left his face. “I understand, but I think if you had looked for it, you could have realized things were starting to get serious.” It was difficult to know when the FEAR shield failed to hold, but once it broke down it was easy to see damage. That should have been a warning, right? “You didn’t give a significant final blow or anything like that, right?” Wilson scratched his head, struggling to find the right words. “You said two people, right? Two cases don’t mean it’s a definite problem, but I think it’s at least something to keep in mind.”

Reine turned to him sulkily- while she could appreciate that he seemd to genuinely care, she didn't like how he seemed like he was talking to a kid, and her first thought was 'well I could probably beat you up too', except.. okay, that was being childish, and she supposed that if she felt like she was being talked down to, she probably deserved it.

With a sort of grumbly mutter she looked back down at the table. Had there been some kind of significant final blow? Reine had no idea, it wasn't as if she'd hit out at him with the intention of taking him down- well, neither Dakota nor Jerry. And she couldn't really recall the details of said spars, either..

"Well I mean if he'd stopped I would have as well," she argued, her tone slightly snippy. The life trainee glared at the table, as if willing it to just spontaneously combust.. and then all of a sudden she sighed and leaned back against her chair.

"I'm sorry," she murmured, looking up at the ceiling fans. "Shouldn't be taking this out on you and all. I'll, uh, figure it out."

Wilson had no doubts Reine could easily beat him in a spar. He kind of sucked at those things hardcore. It was kind of pitiful in a way.

He nervously drummed his fingers against the table at the sharp edge in her voice. “That’s good. Then I don’t think you have a very bad anger issue—assuming that, uh, you have one at all.” At her sudden change in tone, Wilson turned to look at Reine with a reassuring smile. “No, it’s okay! If I can be of any help I don’t mind at all.” He brought a hand down to his stomach when he heard a faint growl. Wilson gave her a sheepish expression. “Uhhh. How about we take a break with some food?” Wilson had completely forgotten his original intention for coming down to the cafeteria, and that was to grab some munchies for the morning. “If you come back to it with a refreshed mind I’m sure you can figure something out.”

Reine shrugged at Wilson. This wasn't an anger issue, okay, it was a matter of pride or something. She would maybe concede that yes, she shouldn't have taken it that far, but it wasn't her fault, it was Dakota's. Then again, maybe she could cut the guy some slack, after all he was in the infirmary, possibly still unconscious, and Reine wasn't into the whole bullying the weak thing. That settled it, then.

"Yeah, food sounds good" she agreed, smiling at Wilson. "And no food-fights this time, I promise."

Oh pride. The root of many problems in the world and daily lives. He would have attempted to make some lame remark involving literature, but all of his knowledge regarding literary classics had mostly flown out of his mind. Forever. Wilson had never liked literature that much.

Wilson laughed as he stretched out across the table before easing out of his seat. “No food fights, really? How disappointing.” As per usual, he walked backwards as he headed for the kitchen. “What do you want? I was planning on making some French toast, but…?”

All the negative feelings faded away the minute Wilson mentioned french toast. Sure, lots of people considered toast boring food, but it was one of Reine's favourites- buttered toast, toast with eggs, peanut-butter toast, French toast, British toast, probably even Czechoslovakian toast- no, wait, Czechoslovakia was now the Czech Republic and Slovakia...

Whatever, she'd still probably like toast from there. Nodding happily, she trailed after him into the kitchen.

Breakfast sounded good, and especially hand-made breakfast. Wilson might have just gained 10 points.
