Clerise had come bundled in layers-- partially due to the Chicago weather, but also to help maximize her duffel bag's space. She had laid claim to room 164, along a mostly empty row of dorms.

Previously, the redhead hadn't really had much of a chance to peer at the contents of her room, but it was evident that she didn't miss much. All she'd brought was her military issue duffel bag, vintage from the 70s and nicked off a strongman on her last day.

She'd packed with a careful haphazardness that suited her needs. Five shirts rolled up, two pairs of jeans. A pair of shorts. Three sports bras and a normal one, seven pairs of underwear (one for each day of the week) and a single miniskirt. She had more socks than anything else; hard to wear boots with bad socks. It made sense in her head.

But most importantly? Clerise had her trapeze artist

The rest of her bag was a small collection of photographs, a small collection of jewelry, and a her pair of outrageous thigh high boots. There were a couple of other things, but as Clerise unpacked, she realized...

There was not that much she had left behind. For other people, perhaps, it may have been a problem to compress their livelihood to a bag, but she already had been living that way for a solid eight years. She shared a trailer with three other girls more often than not, and had never owned an apartment in her life.

So now?

The acrobat had dumped her things in the approximate right place...and left her room to explore.

Clerise went over to the next room over, and rapped on the door with her wrists.

"Anyone in there?" she asked. "New neighbor, all that s**t. Came to say hi, I think we're practically alone on this ********' side."

{[ Astute observation-- I hope you recognize the sarcasm, sheila. ]} her newly bonded weapon piped up, his drawl lazy.

"Shut up," Clerise replied testily, her lips pursed. "No one asked you s**t, Cap'n."

{[ Interesting to know that 's**t' can be a two syllable word. ]}

A huff and she knocked on the door again, the urge to be...a normal person fading.

Christ, she hadn't been normal since she was sixteen. Her very own ROOM. Sheesh!

Ofelia was laying face down on her bed, her pillow smashing against her nose to the point where her breathing sounded like she was being suffocated. It was her normal method of sleeping, or resting, or whatever it was she was doing, and Ofelia kept her eyes wide open as she half-stared into the white fabric. Part of her didn't want to get up as she heard the door knock and the voice that came with it, and she lifted her legs up so that she could cross her ankles with them resting over her back.

Get up and answer the door you lazy ********. It's important for you to make friends while you're here. Rue's sudden vocal input was unwelcome and Ofelia frowned into the pillow. The young woman wasn't being rude or lazy, she was being tired. Or something. Get up. Rue's voice rose to a screech and Ofelia hoisted herself up, rubbing her eye and blinking. Why was half the room dark despite the light being on? Well, whatever. It only took her a few steps to cross over and open the door on the second knock, and Ofelia blinked as she peered out into the hallway.

"Can Ah help...ah, yer Circus Queen. Thanks fer lettin' me use yer parka earlier, are ya mah next door roomie?" The other woman had just said as much but Ofelia wasn't really paying attention as much as she was doing her own thing. Like...not paying attention. Whelp. "S'good ta know someone Ah met at the little club meetin' is right next door ta me, Ah was worried Ah'd be alone over here. Wanna come in, there's not much."

And by not much she meant "nothing." Ofelia didn't go home to get her items when she was recruited - she didn't do much of anything. She followed that man like a puppy following a sausage on a string.

"No problem," Clerise said, waving a gloved hand, surprised that it was the Southern girl. Small world, she supposed-- as large as the academy was, it was still only a single island, with a very small percentage of the population on it. The girl looked sleepy as hell-- so there was some normality here after all.

{[ Normal is no longer an option in your day to day life. ]} Shut up. {[ Just because you refuse to accept reality doesn't make it any less true. ]}

She shook her head, trying to get the ******** to shut up, still obviously unaccustomed to a fully sentient second person upstairs.

"Sorry," she explained, stepping in, towering over Ofelia-- her new outfit involved some kicking rad boots, which gave her an extra four inches. It was excellent.

"Not used to having another...person or whatever they are knocking around in my thinkpan," she explained, peering around the empty room. "You didn't bring much, huh? And yeah, I didn't really see too many other folks on the floor."

A crooked grin crossed the redhead's face-- she dug around in her coat's pocket for a watch, peering at it. "Do you know who else is on this end of the rooms?"

It would honestly be best, in Clerise's mind, if there weren't too many people around her. Less interaction with the general populace, and less noise. After eight years of constantly being around a hundred or more people and a handful of animals, being on the island was blissful silence.

It was more amazing than she ever remembered it being before: the hum of electronics, she assumed, or the air conditioning-- Clerise didn't know, and didn't really care. It was nothing compared to the trumpeting of elephants and the brawling of couples and angry fire eaters and sword swallowers.

"Hope there aren't too many."

Ofelia wasn't lying when she said her room was empty - it had maybe her jacket and her shoes in there. She'd managed to smuggle some flip flops into her wardrobe when she was getting new clothes, she loved flip flops, and over on her desk it looked like she might have had an eye patch on the empty desk? that was about it, seriously. Less was more and Ofelia didn't think she'd spend a ton of time in her room anyway.

"Havin' a voice in yer head, Ah can understan' it. Ah got Rue in mine an' she's jus' been bitchin' 'bout how she hates me an' wishes Ah were dead." Ofelia raised her arm up to show off the charm bracelet, the small bangles shaped like knuckle dusters a silly indication of what Rue really was. "Ah kinda used ta hearin' voices though, seein' as the barn next ta mah house was haunted an' Ah could hear 'em makin' noises all night long."

The Barn. Oh, how Ofelia hated thinking of the Barn. It was a memory, only a memory now. Yup.

"As fer roomies down the hall, Ah dunno? Ah got the room closest in this section an' Ah didn' see any time tags on doors inbetween. Ah guess we can go looikin' 'round inna bit if ya wanna?"

Clerise surveyed the barren dorm with a note of...well. Couldn't be disappointment, not really-- how could any of them truly have brought much along that's actually interesting?

"It's still ******** weird," Clerise huffs, leaning back against a wall, arms folded across her chest. "Tormented for years by a bunch of bullshit voices and the day I arrive, I get one that can articulate his hatred for me."

Ofelia's Rue didn't sound any better than the Cap'n.

{[ She sounds like a right proper sheila to me, you know. ]}

"Shut up, Cap'n," Clerise snapped, eyes narrowed. "Rue's yours I take it? Mine's named Balthazar. Usually call him Captain though-- former pirate or something, I don't even know."

Who'd ever ******** heard of an Australian pirate? No one, that's who. What a crock of s**t.

{[ Are you calling my story rubbish? ]}

The redhead growled, and damgled the aged thing in front of Ofelia. "This is the ********. He thinks pretty highly of himself. And I thought my ego was bad."

When the other hunter trainee mentioned the haunted barn, Clerise pursed her lips and gave a curt nod. "Christ. I just saw them out and about, and heard them often at night. I can't imagine living next to a goddamned cesspool of a place.

"Ehh. No need. I'll check it out later. I'm hoping we get something real to do pretty soon-- I can't stand being stir crazy. I ********' hate school, but I hate sitting on my hands more, y'know?"

{[ Idle hands are the devil's work, after all. How about you take your fat arse to the training fields and put me to use, huh? ]}

Clerise didn't dignify his demand with an answer.

"Ah'm sorry ta hear that. If ya ever need ta talk 'bout it though, rant or sommin', Ah'm here ta listen. It's probably a good thing ta have someone who believes in ya an' doesn't try ta pump ya full of meds when ya mention ya hear stuff." Ofelia grinned and rubbed her hand through her hair, totally getting her fingers stuck in the massive knot of braids and whatever else she'd decided to leave the style in recently. She tried to play it off, horribly, and chuckled awkwardly in the process. "An' yeah, her name's Rue. She's a set'a knuckle dusters, which kinda seems funny all things considered."

Not everyone knew that Ofelia had a glass eye and she didn't really go around broadcasting it. No real need since, unless it popped out and rolled away or something, she looked pretty normal. Heterochromatic, at best with a massive scar to accent it. She thought it was funny then to have a weapon that involved her punching things since most people assumed only one eye would cause for shitty depth perception. She'd had twelve years to get over that and she got over it in ~style~.

Style meant fist-fights out the a** and learning not to get her a** handed to her so often. "Also, a pirate? That's kinda cool - Ah never even thought to ask Rue if she was something after all other than jus' a weapon." She looked at her charm bracelet, lifting it up enough to look at the bangles that hung down.

I'd never bother to tell you since it's not important for you to know. My past is mine and I hate you.

"She says she won't tell me anyway." No love lost there, and Ofelia lowered her arm back down. She tilted her head at Clerise as the girl kept going on and on and a smile spread over the teen's face. It was fun to meet someone who enjoyed speaking nearly as much as she did, even if they talked a whole lot faster and made half as much sense. ....As a pot calling the kettle black, of course. "Well, if ya wanna do sommin' there are missions an' stuff Ah hear 'bout. There's also sparrin' an' jus' general explorin'."

Adventure? <******** yes.

"Talk is something I do well," Clerise replied wryly, snorting to herself. "Just the knowledge that others exist is...soothing. It doesn't fix it, but it's...you know." A small smile, without any malice. "Nice."

It was the end of times with Clerise ******** Wilson called something 'nice' -- but she thought it to be an accurate term.

"Some of the medication wasn't the WORST...It served its purpose and s**t. Numbing. Didn't fix anything, just deadened."

At the mention of Rue, Clerise peered closer at the trinket of Ofelia's.

{[ Wishing for a different weapon? ]}

"Forever and always, Cap'n. You suck." The redhead didn't mean it that much, but god it WOULD have been nice to have a weapon that was a little more...intuitive.

"He doesn't share much more than that, and I kinda guessed it when he demanded I call him Cap'n and keeps treating me like an underling. But I am starting to get the feeling that is...common." Clerise rolled her eyes, shaking Balthazar on his chain a little.

"We should explore, but ******** if I know where. Wonder how many big bads are in the forests n s**t?"

"Ah dunno nothin' 'bout this place so yer guesses are 'bout as good as mine. Ah dunno if there'd be anythin' here though cause everyone seems so up in a** 'bout their weapons an' bein' all serious business hunter, so lettin' somin' big an' bad live out on the lands dun really seem possible." Ofelia raised her hand up as Clerise leaned closer, showing off the charms that decorated her wrist-bracelet. Nothing fancy, sure, but Ofelia didn't think of Rue as anything fancy either. A loud voice in her head and something to punch people with was about all she could click together for the time being. Thinking any more on it would hurt her head and she wasn't sure Rue merited that much stress from her. not yet anyway, or not this early into what was probably going to be a lifelong partnership.

I hope you die and it ends sooner rather than later.

Ignore, ignore, move along. It looked like Ofelia would learn to master ignoring voices in her head, or maybe she was only doing okay because there was someone else in the room and she could focus on them instead. When she was alone there was a very high chance that Rue was going to drive her insane. "Ah dunno if bein' treated like an underlin' would be a bad thin'? Rue treats me like she wants me ta die in a fire an' quickly."

You catch on so quickly over certain things.

Clerise smiled at the charms. "Pretty," she said, without a hint of sarcasm, inspecting the bracelet from afar. She wasn't one to tell the difference between a nicer trinket and an ugly one-- her taste was pretty indiscriminate.

And then she scoffed, red eyes rolling so hard she thought they might burst from her eye sockets.

"Oh, I think he wants that, too. But...since he can't kill me...Like ******** I'm conceding to the b*****d, either him wanting me to kick the ********' bucket or wanting me to . He doesn't know me, he doesn't get to boss me around." A wild grin, toothy and sharklike. "I'll just ignore the ********." There wasn't any other option, in her mind.

He had no business tossing her orders like she was some sort of animal. Clerise wasn't a dog or a cat at anyone's beck and call-- okay, well.

She was.

And that would be conveniently ignored, for no-

{[ Don't worry, princess. I know that you'll never listen to me. You're too useless. I expect it already. ]}

"Whatever. Fires can't kill us." She waved a hand airily. "They'll need to do better than that."

"If Ah was able ta Ah'd give 'em ta ya - Ah'm not big on jewelry an' stuff. Last time Ah tried wearin' sommin' Ah ended up nearly gettin' mah fingers torn off." Ofelia looked down at her hand and at the pretty little scar that decorated most of the flesh around her middle finger's middle knuckle. "Turns out if ya wear a ring, dun stick yer finger inta sommin' that moves." Ofelia snickered at the memory, which...she probably shouldn't have. It was the first time her brother had hit her after all, but whatever. Still pretty funny in retrospect. In her head Rue was bitching about how she hated her life and wished Ofelia would bite her tongue off and save the world all the troubles. Ofelia thought about that and biting her tongue seemed hella, hella painful and didn't want to do it.

"OH HEY SO WANNA DO SOMMIN'? We can like...punch eachother or sommin' - mah brother always said men could understand stuff through fists an' Ah fi'gr we ain't men but punchin' still could be fun?" Ofelia, to show she was kinda into it, punched her knuckles together. It hurt, holy s**t, but she still forced a huge smile.

"Aw, well. I'd probably lose it if that were the case, so for the best, I guess." The redhead shrugged with a grin-- only to be horrified shortly thereafter.

Clerise groped at her fingers, wincing. "Oh jesus ********' christ, that sounds...Uh. ...Ow? Ow. Spare me the details, for my own sake."

The redhead grinned as Ofie decided to punch her knuckles, waving a hand at her. "I am STARVING, so I'm gonna ********' run to the cafeteria-- but dude! Raincheck. We will do this." Clerise gave the other trainee a hug, as well as a firm pat on the back as well to encourage it. "Come get me when you want one, we'll ********' make it happen!"

And then she ran off into the sunset.
