Kawoni kept peering behind her to see if her daughter was there. this small foal was so quiet is was hard to tell. it was a nice warm day and, like a good mother, Kawoni was taking her daughter out to have some bonding time.

her mate and son were off somewhere doing boy things so she figured it only fare that her and Kagali went and enjoyed the day at the stream simply relaxing and talking. after all, knowing how to be social was an important part of a mares etiquette. so far they had not spoken a word. the filly quietly trailed behind her mother. Kawoni had a sinking feeling that maybe this was not the best idea.

Kagali walked silently behind her mother. these little outings were not of much interest to her, they always seemed to end in frustration from her mother. Kawoni liked to talk and she liked to be social. Kagali had nothing against that, but when her mom tried to make her act like a lady, or learn social manners, thats were she drew the line. Kagali did not like to be with people. there is nothing wrong with that, everyone has their own preferences, so why was mom always so admit about getting her to talk and make friends. she would much rather sit by herself and watch the others being social. Kagali liked to watch people, she found others to be fascinating, you could learn so much about someone by just watching them. why did mother not understand that?

Her moms tail flicked back and forth as she walked. she was in a good mood. Kagali was determined to try and keep it that way, but there was no promises when it came to trying to relate with her mother.

Kawoni reached the river and went up to take a drink. she was nervous, and did not know how to start. what was she even going to talk about? how did she even start a conversation with someone who will not answer? she took some quick gulps to steady herself. what was she thinking, this was her daughter she was talking about, not some odd stranger. they had plenty to talk about. they were similar in many ways, and she was determined to find them. Kawoni looked at her daughter and asked a simple question, "so honey how was your day yesterday? did you do anything exciting or meet anyone new?" she smiled desperately hoping that her daughter would give a nice answer, not some one word reply. Kawoni would have to be careful about how she phrased her questions. she would have to make sure that there was no way that Kagali could give only one word answers.

Kagali stopped at the waters edge and just watched as her mother drank. up this was going to be awkward. why her mom forced these little chitchats was way beyond her. it would be best for them both if Kawoni would just leave her alone and they could enjoy themselves in their own ways. the question made Kagali give a huge inward sigh. mom did not even know what her own daughter did yesterday? well like a good daughter she would do her best to give a satisfactory answer. "yesterday i woke up before the sun and went into the woods were i sat under a tree and listened to some squirrels fight over a nut that had fallen to the ground by me. they did not even notice me when they grabbed the nut." she did not blink, did not even move when she replied. the one thing she hated more than talking about others was talking about herself.

Kawoni listened to her daughter. it was a nice reply, but the content worried her. how early did kagali wake up? how did she not even notice that her daughter was missing in the morning. granted that Kagali was gone quite a bit, but to wake up and not notice that someone was gone. she had to be careful to pay more attention next time. "that sounds interesting." how was she supposed to reply to something like that? squirrels? really? "well honey i brought you out here just because i want to know more about you, you are gone a lot and im curious as to what you do while you are away."

Kagali blinked. had she not just told her mom what she does? well then it was only necessary, she would tell her everything she could without overwhelming Kawoni. not even the strongest mother can handle the true intent of their child's heart. "ok, while im gone i go off on my own and listen to the things the woods have to say. you can tell a lot about whats going on in the world just by listening to the tone in the birds voices. there was a wolf in our territory the other day, but dad chased it off. i know this because all of the rabbits were hiding."

"when im not listening to the voices of the animals im watching. i like to learn new things. i go and find strangers and watch them from the bushes or the woods. there was a stallion the other night that stopped and started talking to the sky, he sounded sad. i met a mare once with the wings of a butterfly on her back and she could heal cuts with a horn on her head."

there take that, lets see what her mom would make of all that.

Kawoni stared in disbelief. not only was she hearing everything, but had her daughter really gone and done all of that? her and Augustine had promised to keep the wolf a secret from their children. something clicked inside of Kawoni's mind. her daughter had been following people? she had been watching people private ongoings? there was something deeply wrong with this. something to do with the natural knowledge that you were not supposed to spy on people. and her daughter had been talking with strangers, what if something had happened? her lips pursed in anger, she did not even know were to start.

"you follow people around? without them knowing? thats not right Kagali, what if one of them noticed and something happened to you? what if one of them was a bad person and tried to hurt you?"

Kagali was slightly hurt by her mothers harsh tone. she had given Kawoni what she wanted and now she was getting in trouble for it? no wonder she did not like telling her mom things. she felt the sudden urge to defend herself.

"Mom they would not find me, im really good at hiding, and its not like im really close to them. my eyes are not the only thing i got from daddy, my hearing and my smelling is just as good as his too. i can be far away and still know what they are doing. and what would make someone want to hurt me? are there really bad soquili out there? and what do they look like?"

this was a topic that she had tried to poke out of her mom before but for some reason Kawoni would always avoid it and try to shrug it off. this time maybe Kagali would be successful, after all her mom was mad and in a talking mood which was the best time to get answers.

Kawoni snorted, "of course there are bad soquili out there, they are call Kalona, they have wings that..." she stopped herself in horror of what she was about to say to her daughter. that little filly was a clever one. Kagali's father is a Kalona, and he is not evil or mad. Kawoni silently cursed her slip of the tongue. her and Augustine did not want to tell their children the true nature of his heritage, especially since neither of her children inherited any distinct Kalona traits. "...and there are normal soquili that sometimes just want to do bad things, like the skinwalkers with animal pelts." hopefully Kagali did not notice the slip of tongue

There! she had said it, Kalona, so there was a name for the type of soquili her father was! she finally knew by what name to call her special genes. she had Kalona eyes. despite her normal calm demeanor, a smile spread across her face. it was the smile of a young child that had just won. "mom, what is this really about? a few nights ago you woke up really late and went off for a while. one time i followed you and you were crying. you do this a lot, go off and cry in the woods late at night. what is making you sad?" now they were getting somewere. she had always sensed that there was something wrong with dad, but she just never could tell what it was. there was something in his eyes, sure they had the same eyes, but his held a deeper emotion.

Kawoni once again found herself staring in disbelief at her daughter. that little filly had not only wiggled the truth out of her, but had been following her around?! her daughter had seen her in her darkest moments. those being the times that she just could not hold in her fear anymore and ran off. how was she going to respond to this? how could she possible explain her innermost thoughts to this innocent child? Kawoni was speechless...she just could not think of the words to say.

Kagali just sat and stared at her mother. she did not mind pauses in conversation, and she knew that it was best to wait and let mom gather her thoughts. Kagali was good at things like this, like getting information that she wanted. you just had to be very patient. so she waited and after a few moments she could tell that her mother was not going to say anything. mom did not like silence, and since keeping the other person happy was a key part in getting information Kagali filled the gap. she had to be careful, for now her mother was open, so if she pried to deep then mom might just shut up again. no she knew that now was the time to gently comfort. "Mom its ok, i wont tell." she stepped close to her mom and nuzzled her leg. she knew that it was easier to for others to tell secrets if they did not have to look them right in the eye, so from this position her mom did not have to look at her.
