So Before got demoted. He's not surprised, really. Sure he was still supposed to be acting like an Intermediate trainee but, eh, fancy new coat aside, Before was rather fond of his Basic trainee coat. Back when he was still a Lifer and was under the delusion that he found where he belonged.
Aaaaand cue need to eat :/
Which was why Before was in the cafeteria, staring mournfully at the normal cookies. He missed the sweet old lady's cookies. He missed the buzz, the high, the happy and excitement, but alas they were no more. With one last lip-quivering pout, he began scarfing them down.
And promptly nearly choked.

Reine pushed the tray away from her moodily, glaring at the remnants of sandwich. Post-Christmas the atmosphere of Deus Ex Machina had gone back to its usual dreariness, and with all the cleanup work they had to do.. the life trainee simply felt drained, too drained to even eat.
How that worked, Reine had no idea. Maybe she needed a little more sleep to get her appetite back. Maybe the food here just kind of sucked.
Abruptly she stood up, lifted her tray off the table, and a few steps away, dumped it unceremoniously at the cleaning area. Just as she was walking out, there was a loud noise behind her- someone coughing and choking.
Reine did not know the Heimlich maneuver, and so all she did was slap the person really hard on the back.
It may or may not actually have been useful.

Before was struggling to dislodge the large chunks of confection from his esophagus. Or was it the trachea? Or was it the larynx? xAx!!! That tube where air was supposed to go! He still has a few seconds left before his face began to turn blue when there was a hard slap to his back.
It didn't exactly do anything except throw him forward into the table. But the blow that was delivered had been juuuuuuuust right, so that when he slammed against the corner, it hit him at the necessary angle. And so Before lived for another day!
After quick wipe of his mouth and in between some more coughing, he turned to face his savior. "Th-thanks! I owe you for that." He was smiling sheepishly and only recognized her as one of the trainees in the Life Labs during the robot incident.

Apparently the action was more effective than Reine had expected- she'd just pretend that had been the intended effect all along, though she was fairly sure results wouldn't be reproducible. Which meant they weren't reliable either.
The frown didn't leave her face, in fact, it might have deepened a little when she noticed whose life she had just saved- one of the people who'd barged in on their fight against the robot at the labs. Funny how irony worked. Reine maintained they hadn't needed any intervention then, but being stubborn was one thing; she had to admit that with their 'help' the monster had simply been defeated faster, resulting in better efficiency.. or the like.
Not that it didn't still suck, but Reine wasn't about to badger him about it. In the grand scheme of things, it didn't actually matter.
"Yeah, well, keep yourself alive." She didn't mention that he didn't 'owe' her anything, either- if anything, she'd just repaid a debt she hadn't asked for.

Before had noticed the girl hadn't mentioned his debt. That didn't sit well with him. It was less to do with actually owing someone and more on his suspicion of anyone letting a favor go uncalled or unaccounted for. "A-ah, yeah, mos def on my agenda," he began sheepishly as he got to his feet, "But I gotta make it up to you somehow!" It was neither question nor request.
It was a fact.
"N-not that I mean you should choke on something so I can save you from that! Or put yourself into any dangerous situation 'cuz we'll prolly be getting a s**t-ton of that soon enough and-"
Silly Before, you are rambling again. His partner pointed out.
And when she did, he promptly shut his trap.

She considered him, though not particularly seriously; the guy had a sort of beaten puppy look to him, though maybe it was just him recovering from almost dying.
"How about a spar."
He was wearing an intermediate trainee's jacket, she recognised, though technically, they had all been demoted. If he'd managed to make it up one rank, though, it should mean something. That, and she supposed she could use some exercise- a little stretch of sorts.
Not waiting for a reply, Reine walked past him and out onto the training fields.

"A spar?" It was a squeak, a sad, sad little squeak accompanied with a massive pout 8CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC But Before did say he owed her and would do anything. If it meant getting beat up in the name of training then... lesson learned: Offer things within reason. The former Lifer sighed and chased after the girl towards the training grounds.

He trailed after her, looking somewhat unwilling, but too bad, he'd already promised, and he better keep to his word. Oddly, it was Reine that was hesitating slightly; the majority of her spars with other trainees had ended rather.. unpleasantly, but then again, she saw no reason to hold back, because that didn't sound like it did anything for improving her fighting technique.
Maybe this time she would try the whole aiming thing, instead of hitting wildly- that sounded like a good idea. Alynthe was forming in her hand when she turned back to face Before. Without giving him any notice she aimed at him, managing to nick him with the blade.

Well, this girl obvs didn't waste any time when it came to sparring did she? Orrrr maybe she was just the type who really liked beating the s**t outta other people. Another lesson learned: Ask what the other party likes to do before you offer them favors within reason. Before winced at the initial strikes from the Lifer, immediately summoning his partner in response.
The bottle-cap pin on his shirt enlarged into a wheel, but at such close quarters it was difficult to maneuver Vanna other than to shove her at Reine. The broadside of the wheel connected in a rather forceful push.

Not bad, she thought; he'd managed to retaliate, smashing the wheel into her face-- though what kind of weapon was that, seriously, even Ally was snickering. Reine was fond of the swordbreaker, though she supposed she'd look more elegant while fighting if she actually learned how to fight.
Which was the purpose of this spar, wasn't it?
Reine pushed the wheel back with her free arm, scowling. It would be hard to attack from the front, since the wheel seemed to serve as some sort of shield as well. She went for his side instead, slashing at him.

Before is not sure whether he would have preferred to see someone smiling or scowling at him while they sparred. On the one hand, a scowl suggested the act of beating the crap out of one another was not a pleasant experience. Which, to Before, was indeed an unpleasant activity he as a trainee was required to do. On the other hand, it was rather nice to see someone smiling at him. But then again, when that smile meant getting pummeled, Before was starting to think he ought to get some distance between them.
After the slash to his side, he sidestepped the other way to avoid a deeper injury, using the spikes on Vanna's wheel to fend off the blade as well as nick the girl lightly on the arm.

At least he wasn't trying to make conversation, or something; the silence allowed Reine to concentrate on the spar. On one hand it unnerved her a little- the atmosphere was getting more and more tense, but on the other, she preferred it like that- the life trainee wasn't in the mood for idle chatter.
The wheel's sharp spike barely scratched her, though it still stung a little. Reine skipped backwards, feinting left, then slashing at Before's side again. Huh.. she was surprised he let his guard down this easily- she'd expected more from an intermediate trainee.

s**t, he wasn't doing too well. Maybe it was because he never fared well against girls in spars. Ariane, Candace, Judy-wait no, Judy was totes a dude... he won against Effort, though but he was the one who initiated that fight.
How long are you going to keep this up, silly Before? Vanna's frown was audible in her voice and she not-so-subtly alerted Before she was more than ready to show what she was capable of.
Before didn't think it was necessary until Reine got him good with that last strike. M-maybe you have a point...
Yes, eight of them, even.
The runes engraved on the wheel began to glow and the wheel began to grow. But despite the added heft and size, Before looked like he had no difficulty carrying it.

Reine spun around to face Before again, ready to strike out, only to notice something odd happening with his weapon- the runes on it flared, and she immediately ducked, expecting him to hit her- like Jordan had with Ferros' fire, or Jerry with Roar's green... light thing, except nothing happened.
Taking her chance, she darted behind him and slashed right across his back. Maybe she should have aimed for an area with a little more skin showing, though; Ally's ice-crystals seemed less effective than she had hoped.

"Hey where did- YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!" DDDDDDDDDDDDD8 and there went Before, tripping forward onto his face. Sadly, it was a stray ice crystal from Reine's own attack that ricocheted off him upon impact with floor that shot back at her. Sadder still, Before wasn't even aware it had happened.
Vanna has no words.
