Leto had given Vulcan a lot to consider.

The Senshi of Camouflage claimed to have found some sort of redemption in Chaos, and insisted that, whatever Ares had done, it was for the better. But the only truth Vulcan could pick out in the things that Leto preached was that it had been wrong to torture and maim. She could not see Ares’s corruption as anything other than what it was—an inevitability. The Senshi of Smoke, who was at once majestic and terrible, deserved Chaos.

And Chaos deserved her.

Earlier that night, when Vanessa had transformed into Sailor Vulcan, she hadn’t started out with any particular intentions. There was an indistinct itch at the back of her head, but it was just inkling. Nothing explicit.

Time ticked by on the invisible hands of an invisible clock.

Vulcan dusted two youma, and coaxed a kitten down from a tree.

The night wore on.

And then, driven by a feeling that was two-parts curiosity and one-part concern, Vulcan went back on a promise that she’d made to herself once, not so long ago. She stood up a little taller, took a deep breath, and made her way into an area of the city where she knew the Blood Moon Court patrolled. The tiny calico in her arms purred.

Vulcan scratched behind its ears, and thought that it was awfully tame for a stray, but could not otherwise be distracted from her surroundings.

She had abandoned her team without warning and was, perhaps, overdue for a punishing.

A darkness within Vulcan looked forward to it. All of her senses were on the alert. Her skin tingled in anticipation of what might lead to a fight.

Nemesis was doing her job, which was a rare occurrence in itself. But, the BMC had taken a hit, and patrols were stretched thin. She doubted that Birhan wanted their current weakness to be known, so asking others to help patrol their territory was out of the question. At least, for Nemesis it was. However, that meant that she had more patrolling to do in a specified area, where on most occasions she liked to wander. Whatever, as long as she got to dust some youma and ward Negaversers away, then her job could be considered well done. Tonight was particularly boring, though, so much so that Nemesis happily considered abandoning this area to go search through another.

An energy signature appearing in her area was about to make her night a whole lot more interesting. There shouldn't be anyone else patrolling with her tonight, not so nearby at least. It gave her something to do, and Nemesis was happy to do it. With her luck, it was probably some Moonie accidentally wandering into the wrong area. Or worse, it was some helpless newbie who had no idea about what areas were already covered by strict patrols. Nemesis would hate explaining things almost more than she hated having nothing to do.

She closed in on the source of energy at a leisurely pace, and when Vulcan was in her sights she couldn't help but raise her brow. She folded her arms against her chest, immediately taking upon an unwelcoming stance. Birhan would probably disapprove, which was more incentive for Nemesis to do it. "The Blood Moon Court patrols this area, and last I recall, you're not a member." Vulcan's status was vague. She hadn't been around in a while, only to show up now... with what intentions? Nemesis likely did not care about Vulcan's reasons for showing up, because what she did care about is that she stuck around for the BMC when Vulcan did not.

Some hostilities were protocol in this sort of situation, Nemesis figured. "So, if you couldn't figure out what that means already, ******** off."

It was becoming more and more unclear if Nemesis was actually helping the BMC or hindering it.

Vulcan felt Nemesis's approach before she could see her. It sparked a nervous anticipation within the Senshi of Volcanoes, who looked forward to the consequences of her rash decisions almost as much as she dreaded them. She ceased walking, so that it would be easier for whoever was coming to find her, and murmured soothing words to the kitten cradled in her arms before putting it down.

The tiny calico blinked up at her, meowed softly, and seemed irritated at being abandoned.

Vulcan shooed it away gently with her foot.

If she was going to have to defend herself, it was better that the cat be out of harm's way.

Nemesis arrived the moment the kitten's tail disappeared around the corner of a back alley. Vulcan, who remembered the other girl for her loud mouth and irritable temperament, assumed a defensive posture at once. She examined the Senshi of Decay with bright eyes, and was resigned to the truth of the harsh words that came out of her mouth.

For a long time, it was all Vulcan could do to stare.

She wasn't sure what had compelled her to trespass in Blood Moon Court territory-- where, once upon a time, she would have been welcomed. But Nemesis's animosity was fair. It made sense. Vulcan had abandoned them. Like a coward. And she had never wanted to come back.

Until a few days ago.

What had changed?

Vulcan wasn't sure what to say. She blinked, almost stupidly, at Nemesis, and then said, "I ran into Leto. I know about Ares."

She breathed, and then caught Nemesis's eye. "I want to fight with you again."
