User ImageIt would be foolish for a slave to do a border patrol. It was presumptuous, and dangerous, and totally absurd. Also, if any of the sisters caught a slave daring to wander away from his post, he'd surely be punished.

Which is why Chimera wasn't doing a border patrol.

He was...wandering dangerously close to the border, during a time when he happened to know no one would be at this particular post, while most of the pack was away training.

He wasn't being insubordinate on purpose, for once. He was being contemplative. His next meeting -- training session, if he could even call it that -- with Lucian was coming up, and he wasn't sure it was such a good idea to continue. More and more, lately, he felt as though something were alive and wriggling in his gut -- something alive and angry and snarling.

Sighing, the patched wolf slipped between the trees, wandering along the riverbank toward the edge of the territory. He paused to drink at the riverbank, trying to sort out the feelings in his mind and his heart.

Why couldn't he just be happy? Why did he have to live in this stupid pack, anyway? Sure, he could leave...be exiled...live at YMCA with his cousins. But that would hardly be any better. It might even be worse. What was he going to do, live with his stupid grandfather?

He withdrew from the river, long ears flicking, and went back to his uneasy pacing.

User ImageAs the shadowy grey female took a long drink from the river, she considered her next course of action. By the scent of it, she was either right at the border of Antianeira or already trespassing in it. Not that she was particularly bothered by this. No. She was right where she wanted to be. In fact, she even had a safe passage of sorts, if the question arose, though she had little doubt that she would have been able to enter their territory even without outside interference.

But that was not her main concern.

No. Right now, she was wondering where to begin her research. Who first should she approach? A warrior? One of these slaves who she had heard loved their lot in life? Hmm... perhaps it would be best to review her options before planning her strategy. After all, information learned from one source could be used to throw off another, make them unbalanced and reveal more than they had intended. In a pack such as this, she had little doubt that the extra help could prove useful.

She lifted her head, licking her maw clean, and continued up the river.

The female did not get very far, however, before her nose told her a fresh scent was near and her eyes caught a strange combination of colors.

Oh? Perhaps her decision had just been taken from her. Who was it that fate had thrown in her path?

The smell that assailed his nostrils was undeniably female, and it caught him on edge. He snapped to sudden awareness, immediately assuming a quivering position of deference, prepared for a beating.

Once the initial shock wore off, however, he realized that the scent was foreign...but not entirely unfamiliar.

Lifting his gaunt head, he narrowed violet eyes as his nostrils hinted at another wolf's approach. She was -- ah. There. He recognized her, vaguely; the grey pelt, the garnet eyes. They stood out in his memory, though for a moment he could not place why.

Then -- ahhh. There it was.

"You," he said, bluntly, all quivering deference gone and replaced by his usual sullen demeanor. "You're that female my idiot brother was trying to woo at YMCA. What are you doing here?"

Ooh. The grumpy one. She thought he had smelled familiar. Senka grinned at his less than friendly greeting, not at all put off.

"Good day to you, too," she replied. "Why yes, I am quite well, how kind of you to ask. It is sweet of you to remember me. Always nice to make an impression."

Somehow, Senka had a feeling that this male would be the most fun she had at teasing anyone since Kamiya all those moons ago. Ah, such sweet memories. At least her first experience in the territory would be an entertaining one. Of course, the journey here had been eventful as well. Such fun! How the gods of fire blessed her these days.

His lip curled in a half-snarl, but he didn't dare lash out -- not in his home territory, anyway. Even though he knew there were no prying eyes, he could hardly be certain who was watching. He plastered a smile on his maw and said, in his most sweetly charming tone that didn't match his words, "If you came looking for Romir, don't get too excited. I caught him professing his undying love to a tree stump the other day. It was pretty, too."

Oh-ho, be bit. Or at least, he tried to. Not what one would expect from a slave. Then again, perhaps it was. Senka knew she would not be happy in his position.

'My dear boy," she drawled. "I do believe you are under the wrong impression. Your brother is sweet, but I would hardly consider him suitable for a proper romance." She paused and considered him. "Though if you were trying to insult me, I can assure you: I find you equally unattractive."

Really, he was such a prickly male. She was sure to get a good laugh.

"As to why I am here, it is really quite simple," she continued as though nothing untoward had just occurred. "I am a storyteller, you see. So, as the title suggests, I am here to both collect and tell stories."

She eyed him doubtfully. "Surely even someone like you has something interesting to say."

He stiffened, glowering at her about her comment. He knew perfectly well that he was hideous; he didn't need some trumped-up red-eyed girl to tell him that. He looked like a patchy-furred freak. He had often been annoyed about it; all of his siblings were normal-looking. Isobel was downright beautiful. But he looked like someone had eaten up a couple wolves, fur and all, and vomited them up into a new wolf.

Needless to say, he'd brooded over this plenty. Senka was definitely not making a friend. He suddenly wished Romir were here, so he could take off some of his rage on his brother.

"Stories, huh? What kind of stories?"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 20, 2012 6:00 pm

Was it wise to antagonize him so? Probably not. Did she particularly care? Definitely not. Still, it might benefit her to be at least a little less blatant about it all. Then again, given their meeting so far, it would probably not make any real difference. Besides, what difference would one antagonistic relationship in this pack make, when there were so many others to make nice with? Especially since she felt that, regardless of the level of friendliness they had toward one another, neither one of them was hiding behind the masks that they showed to the world. It was...oddly refreshing. A mutual, genuine antagonism, somehow tempered with honesty.

Senka laughed aloud at the thought, then shook out her fur and looked at the male again.

"Just a thought," she said before he could begin to question her sanity too thoroughly. "Ah, my stories. I collect all kinds. War, romance, tragedy, things to make you laugh or cry or give you nightmares. It does not matter, so long as it is worth telling, and I find that most stories are. Do you have a story, Chimera?"

He stared at her, blinking. Was she for real? Who did this? "They don't really tell slaves a lot of stories," he said, and a wicked grin crawled its way up his bony maw. "Though we usually have a way of hearing them all, anyway."

He cocked his head, wondering where he could start. His violet eyes flashed. "Come...walk with me. I don't want to linger on the border. I'll get in trouble if we run into a patrol."
PostPosted: Fri Jan 20, 2012 7:24 pm

A slow smile spread across her maw.

"Of course you do." She had little doubt that this quarrelsome male had all kinds of interesting ways around the rules. If it were so, she was most curious to learn about them. Or rather, just what he did with them. A slave who is not quite so obedient as he ought to be? Quite interesting. Perhaps they were more alike than she had given him credit for.

"Wouldn't want you to get caught," she said as she followed him.

What manner of tale would he tell? Something about the pack, perhaps? Some sordid little story? Something from his own past? Well, she would soon find out.

"I don't know how to tell stories all pretty," he said, dropping his voice a little as he started forward, pacing on long legs, his straggly tail hanging stubbornly behind, limp as though broken. It hadn't had occasion to wag in a long time.

"But I know some things, about the pack. I can tell you about how my aunt left her three sons to die when they were born, so their dad brought them to my mom to raise. And I can tell you about how the queen's consort was sent to murder her, but ended up fathering all her puppies instead."

He hadn't been born yet when this actually happened, but he knew about it and it was completely baffling to him. Really. Who did that? Who slept with someone who tried to kill them?

"Oh, and one time my grandfather came to visit. My aunt tried to kill him."
PostPosted: Fri Jan 20, 2012 8:40 pm

Aha. Here it was. Placed right in front of her, there was a fount of information, hers for the taking. How delicious. What would he tell her first? All of it would surely give her insight into this strange pack. The bit about the queen was the most tempting, certainly, but would that story be easier to acquire from anyone? Could she convince the consort to tell her himself?

And what of the cruel aunt? She did not yet know if such a thing would make a fine tale, but it would certainly give her a closer look at the daily lives of these warrior females and their slaves.

"Oh? The queen's consort sounds like quite a unique male, and your aunt sounds rather vicious." She would let him decide.

"Ohh, she's terrible," he said, playing immediately into her paws. A strange, fluttery feeling rose in his chest. He was talking badly about Varia -- in front of a female -- and he wasn't getting in trouble! He was being encouraged. It was terrifying yet oddly wonderful.

He hoped it wasn't a trap.

"She's my dad's sister," he said. "My other aunt, she lives in YMCA. She hates it there, but she stays anyway out of love. Supposedly. I don't think she loves anybody, though. Antianeira doesn't let you love." His lip curled. "Well...okay...that's not true. My mom loves me. She doesn't belong here. She's the pack nanny, so she can get by with it, but she'll get hurt. I know she will."

He stopped, looking around again, paranoid. No border patrol, then -- and no distant sounds of training. The females must be hunting. It made sense...they would be taking advantage of the fine spring weather. His lip curled again. Slaves didn't get to hunt with the pack. They were stick killing vermin and gnawing on rats and trying to get scraps of meat off the kills after all the Sisters were finished.

"Anyway. Varia. She's the head warrior. When she mated with Casimir, he only gave her one daughter, and she could have killed him for it. He had to leave the pack for his own safety. And I heard this one time, a female went out into the woods and was...well, she was spending time with this male who wasn't one of ours. Just some scraggly loner. But Varia tore him apart right in front of her. Just snuck up on them and ripped his head off."

He wasn't supposed to know about that story, but Iosef had been really upset about it, and Chimera had overheard it. Speaking of, where had Taiyou disappeared to? She'd been missing for awhile. He didn't blame her. He would've left, then, too.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 20, 2012 9:17 pm

My, but that female sounded unpleasant. Were they all like that? No. He had said his mother was different. And that other female. The one with the lover. So. which was more common? Did the pack condone such behavior as this Varia exhibited?

"She does sound like a nasty bit of work," Senka agreed. Of course, the fact that she meant it did not mean that she was not fishing for more information.

"Yet the pack lets her get away with it. Are all of the warriors like that?"

Better to know what she was getting herself into, if such a dangerous female resided there. Senka might be confident in her abilities, but she was no fool. These wolves have seen much active combat, while she had been idle in that department for months already. Doubtless, the storyteller was out of practice. She really ought to fix that. Even her silver tongue surely had its limits...though she had yet to find them. Well, there was Kaeerah, but that was different.

She shook the thoughts away and returned her focus to Chimera.

"Allow it? I don't think there's much other choice. But everybody respects her. And she trains the others, so..." He shrugged, irritably, and continued walking. He was heading in a vague, meandering path toward the tree with the scratched-up trunk where he practiced his training -- where he would be meeting Lucian soon, he remembered.

"They're not all so bad. The Queen is actually really fair, but she's not...I mean, you wouldn't confuse her for another wolf. Nobody in this whole pack would be nice by any means in another pack, I bet. I mean, my Aunt Terreis is one of the sweetest warriors, to hear my dad tell it, but her sons all told me how awful she was to them in YMCA."
