((This is set before the Games ORP and before Meets goes out to the Borderlands and meets Slide, but after her meeting with Wave Walker and reunion with Smudge and the twins, and a good while after the great flood))

The abundance of food and water in the swamp never failed to surprise Meets-the-Sea upon her return from a journey to the ocean. While the lean and well-traveled doe was perfectly capable of surviving off the few plants that grew near the seaside and on the harsh journey between sea and swamp, it was still enjoyable to be able to eat her fill – perhaps even more so due to the previous scarcity.

Meets smiled to herself as she trotted past the berry bush where she had run into her son Smudge on her last trip back from the ocean. He was an interesting one, that Smudge…as were the other two of her children she had run into on that occasion, the twins Stream and Stray. Interesting, and a little strange…but in a good way. Although the Meets didn’t always quite understand all of her children, she was certainly proud of them.

From out of the bushes to the doe’s right there suddenly burst a medium-sized kiokote, his black mane and tail flying behind him, looking over his shoulder and laughing playfully as he ran … straight into the unsuspecting doe’s forelegs. A soft “Oof!” escaped the kiokote’s mouth as he crashed, stumbling to his knees in front of the startled doe.

Looking up, the kiokote realized his blunder and quickly scrambled to his hooves. “Oh dear, pardon me!” he exclaimed, dancing from hoof to hoof in front of the doe. “I should really pay more attention to where I’m heading!” The kiokote’s voice was high-pitched and a bit fey, and he didn’t seem quite capable of standing still. “You’re not hurt, are you? I would never forgive myself if you were, really. I was playing tag with my friend and I suppose I got a little…overenthusiastic.” He looked back over his shoulder, searching the direction from which he had come to no avail. “I have a feeling she lost patience with me and didn’t even bother to follow, however. She tends to get a bit snippy.” He turned back to the doe and rolled his eyes, smiling all the while. “Ah well, her loss, really – now she doesn’t have the pleasure of meeting such a lovely kimeti doe.” His eyes washed over her once before coming to a stop once more on the doe’s face. “You have such exquisite coloring. But oh, where are my manners? I’m Toadflax. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Although in her past Meets might have shied away anxiously from an encounter with such a … lively … kin, she had grown a bit lately, and instead followed the kiokote’s actions and rapid speech with a glint of amusement in her eyes. “It’s lovely to meet you as well, Toadflax,” she replied, bowing her head slightly in greeting. “My name is Meets-the-Sea. I’m fine, don’t worry yourself…a little shock won’t hurt me.” She chuckled softly and flicked an ear shyly at Toadflax’s compliment. “You’re quite a pleasant shade yourself,” she ventured a little nervously, unused to flirting and unsure if she was doing it quite correctly. “I must say that I’ve never really had the chance to speak with any of your species at length…and as a bit of a traveler myself, I confess to being quite interested in the plains from which you come.” She shuffled one of her forehooves in the dirt, an anxious habit. “I don’t suppose you’d be interested in joining me for lunch and some conversation, perhaps? I know where we can find an excellent grove of delicious flowers…if you don’t need to find your friend, that is.”

Toadflax grinned and performed a little half-leap of pleasure at the doe’s invitation, his hind hooves clicking together. “I would be most delighted to accompany you and tell you of my homeland, dear Meets-the-Sea,” the kiokote replied, taking on a bit of an affected tone and bowing ceremoniously, one of his forelegs extended in a dramatic fashion. “My friend can wait. No doubt she’s found some dreary mushroom to glare at mournfully in the meantime.” Toadflax laughed and pranced up on the tips of his hooves once more. “Lead on, fair lady! Lunch awaits. I will follow!”

With a playful laugh of her own and a skip in her step, Meets led the way into the swamp and toward lunch, her new friend prancing close behind and chattering all the while.
