Location: Benden

The investigation would not be complete, of course, without a sweep through the Weyrs. It was an entirely voluntary option, to have one’s dwelling searched, but in such high stakes games and such high tensions, refusing to be searched or interviewed cast doubt on otherwise untarnished individuals. And so, the doors to private dwellings were thrown open across the Weyr and Riders would stand by as the investigators surveyed their things, were questioned and then left alone to feel mildly violated.

He was not pleased. He had loads more important things to do then sharding babysit a bunch of halfwit dimglows and he didn’t like the fact they would be treading around his personal sanctum. A bronzerider’s sanctum – second only a goldrider and they better sharding remember that. Arms crossed and with a sour expression that dared anyone to cross him when he came next in line, C’ren glowered at the first female to cross his gaze…. Though it softened somewhat as the boys filed past as well. “You mess anything up and I’m going to tan your hides. Hurry and be done with it,” it didn’t matter that there were adults among them, none of them were actually important riders as far as he was concerned. Besides, who liked having their rooms turned upsidedown and insideout by children? Not him!

It was lushly decorated for a rider’s room, a feline-skin rug that must’ve cost many a marks lining the floor and bookshelves of wood lined one wall, stuffed full of strategic scrolls he’d obviously spent time collecting or copying. His bed was massive and luxurious, the fanciest piece by far… and he looked with pride upon it. If nothing else, one could not say his partners were not pulled into the lap of luxury when they spent time with him. The grin grew a little stronger – wasn’t the new goldrider supposed to be in this group? Perhaps if the woman found this to her liking…. But then again, how would the weaker sexe not be interested? They all desired luxury, and he delivered it.

"Excuse me?" Dinah snapped to attention when the bronzerider whose room they would be searching threatened to 'tan their hides.' She tolerated threats from no one, and riders were certainly not an exception. "You even try'n and raise a finger at me for doing what we were sent here to do and you'll lose the whole hand, am I clear?"

Dinahsk, who'd followed her in, picked up her handler's anger, and yellow worked its way into her eyes. She disliked direct conflict inherently, and skulked behind Dinah to nudge her, attempt to settle her. The woman patted her wher once, absently, but didn't break her gaze. "The less you get in our way, the sooner we'll be done."

She made a few clicking noises at her partner, signaling her to start searching.

F’itz expression soured the moment the bronzerider opened his mouth. “Rider, you would do well to mind your tongue in the presence of a junior weyrwoman,” he said coldly, pursing his lips but reframing from crossing his arms as the bronze rider did. He had never minded that bronze riders were at the top of the pecking order, what he minded was ones who were rude about it and that went double because he wasn’t even observing the ‘proper’ order.

“Junior weyrwoman Kindra,” F’itz went on, still sounding frostily polite, “is trying to run an investigation, she has not come here for her own amusement and does not have time for your attitude; I trust you appreciate that and wish to cooperate? As the good wherhandler says the better you cooperate the sooner we will leave.” Such an opulent abode this was, too. F’itz had nothing against comfort; his own weyr was very comfortable but in a more simple, restrained fashion than this. Excess was not befitting of a rider, no matter what colour their dragon. Arrogance, plain and simple in his voice, stance, words and the way he chose to feather his nest.

Kindra was just slightly behind F'itz, deciding to allow the older rider through the room first since she'd picked up the grating voice of that Wherhandler again and to be honest. Kindra was getting sick of her attitude, the way she'd appeared to intimidate the candidate before grated with her still and now she was sassing a Bronzerider?! Kindra would have said something but F'itz got to it first and she had to admit, despite her hot head wanting to snap at Dinah, the older rider made more sense.

She looked at the Bronzrider with slightly hard eyes. She wanted to badly to comment, something about daring to tan her hide would result in his bronze being practically neutered, not that Suunath would do it but the threat might have been sufficientto cow the arrogant looking man. She couldn't put her finger on it but there was something about this man that made her skin crawl and despite the luxury of his weyr, which she had to admit was rather impressive, she had no intention of sharing it with him. She did wonder at first, how the man came by such expensive things but she shook her head slightly, he was an older rider, he could have earned the marks easily enough but something rankled with her. Possibly the fact her current weyr wasn't the most luxurious and certainly wasn't fancy like her old room back at her parent's Hold, not that she would have given up being with Suunath for anything, a less than impressive Weyr was nothing compared to the bond she shared with her Gold and anyway, when she was senior Weyrwoman, she could have all the luxury she desired if she wished.

All these thoughts passed through her head in mere seconds and she gave the rider the merest of smiles "I'll make sure they put everything back don't worry" she said, diplomatically, not mentioned anything about herself touching a thing. She wasn't entirely sure what they were looking for since they'd found nothing of note in other weyrs. "I'm sure if you have nothing to hide then there is nothing to worry about" she said slightly warningly to the Bronzerider "No need to be snappy at our less... refined group members" she smiled, not so warmly.

A wherhandler and a woman. C'ren almost sneered at Dinah, but managed to tone it down just to a pure look of disgust. Wherhandlers. Arrogant lot if ever there was one, and the women were the worst of the bunch.

"Don't get above yourself, wherhandler. I don't trust you as far as I can throw you. As soon as the investigation is over, you'll be right back in the catacombs with no power, where you belong."

The addressing from an older man drew C'ren's attention, and he eyed F'itz's knots. At least here there was some hope, even if the Brownrider had the audacity to chastise him and side with a Sharding handler. Well, after all, he was protecting the Junior Weyrwoman. Suitable response, C'ren supposed, though he didn't like the man's tone. C'ren was glad he'd been right about her being in the group, at least. "My apologies to the Weyrwoman. I meant no disrespect to her. A man doesn't like his home ransacked by... investigators," he cast a nasty look at Dinah and the female Weyrlings present, "when it's clear the Benden riders had nothing to do with this."

Ah. There she was. C'ren smiled at Kindra as she addressed him, then inclined his head. "I will attempt to tolerate the rest for your sake, Weyrwoman. What would I have to hide?" He gestured at his impressive weyr. "Everything you see has been come by with honest marks over Turns. Ask anyone."

He glanced at the people now filling his room and pressed his lips together in irritation. Did they really need so many to search one weyr?

"I don't suppose W'lin's told you when this farce is going to end?" he asked F'itz. The man had been around the weyr for as long, likely longer than, which meant he'd been there for all the nonsense that had gone on over the last few Turns. He knew W'lin's history and the workings of the weyr and its riders. He'd understand.

His fellow Bronzerider didn't seem entirely pleasant, but N'mol just nodded to C'ren slightly as he entered the older man's weyr and went about his business. Of course, Dinah had to come up with a reply and N'mol stopped with his hand on the scrolls to turn and look back at them. The Bronzerider's response to her was as N'mol had expected. Most riders wouldn't back down for a wherhandler, and this was obviously a rider with a temper. N'mol didn't dare look for Kindra. She, at least, might know better than to alienate more of her riders by now.

Seeing that Dinah wouldn't just let the man's words go-- she probably took it as a challenge-- N'mol took a step closer, his eyes locked on to her.

"Enough, Dinah," he said firmly. His voice was neither angry, nor belittling. Just firm. It didn't matter that she was several Turns older than him. They had spoken not so long ago about this very problem, but apparently the break between the talk and the searching of the weyrs had made her forget what they had discussed. When he had told her he would go to W'lin, it wasn't a threat: he would do it because it needed to be done. Already she was making the situation worse by being unable to control her temper. He wouldn't bring up the conversation in front of others if he didn't have to, but he hadn't been cowed by her reaction during their earlier conversation either.

"We have work to do."

When it came to dragonriders, F'itz was among the least objectionable she'd ever met...and given present company, well, he looked even better by comparison. Proof positive the shiny ones were the worst - did those dragons do their very best to find the most insufferable people possible? Oh, sure, she could be just as insufferable, but in her mind, she was always justified.

"Power? This has nothing to do with power, you deadglow, but I wouldn't expect you to understand, since that's all people like you care about." Dinah snorted in disgust at C'ren and the entire situation, and sent Dinahsk a mental command - she knew better than to sic her wher on someone, certainly, but hurting one of the b*****d's prize possessions wouldn't get them made Holdless. While she scented her way across the room, the wher just happened to catch her claws in the feline-skin rug.

Oh, Dinah hadn't forgotten what N'mol had said - she just didn't care enough about what N'mol had said, especially not enough to ignore a bronzerider threatening to tan her hide like some naughty child when she'd done nothing wrong. "Seriously?" the young woman asked incredulously, "How is it even the slightest bit okay that he threatened us the moment we walked in the door? How is it not okay to speak that way to a goldrider, but it's okay for everyone else? That doesn't make any sharding sense!"

Kindra didn't miss the tone of Dinah's voice, and she clenched her jaw against comment, she wasn't going to belittle herself in front of two Bronzriders and the older Brownrider she actually would say she respected. She also didn't miss the wher catch the rug "You will pay for that rug's replacement if your Wher has damaged it Dinah" she said, somewhat harshly but the attempt to keep her tone was clear. as was the fact she meant every word and would make sure that somehow, the wherhandler paid the bronzerider back for the feline-skin.

She rolled her eyes as Dinah turned on N'mol next "Enough Dinah or i'll have you removed from this room, your attitude is not going to help us search this room, may i remind you that he volunteered to have his Weyr searched, you WILL treat this search as you would expect your own rooms to be treated were it YOURS that were being searched" she said to the wherhandler, standing straight and looking her right in the eyes, keep her back straight and head high but not haughtily. For once she was behaving diplomatically, the rider was well within his rights to throw them all out if he felt like it, despite the fact his eyes on her made her skin crawl just a little bit, and she wasn't about to allow the handler's (or her own) Temper to bungle the search "If you Wher can't be controlled you will have to leave her outside" she said, not realising she'd called the wher a female, instead of just calling the green an IT .. like she normally would.

Oh dear shells. F’itz repressed a sigh as the young folk snapped and bristled at one another; he never had been a fan of conflict, especially within his own Weyr. He couldn’t forget the thing his boot had knocked against in the hallway. Divides and resentment, how far could they take a person?

He wanted to ignore his dragon’s words and yet.... W’lin had indeed done very well out of the tragedy. Turning his attention back to C’ren F’itz shook his head slowly. “The Weyrleader doesn’t keep council with me,” he clarified, “but I presume this will go on until we find the one responsible for the murder of our Weyrwoman... and the attacks on the new Weyrs too, if the same person or people were responsible.” Either the one who was really to blame... or a scapegoat. W’lin was no fool, and did he truly suspect the bronzerider now? He supposed he did but he suspected others too, but W’lin was the one he could put a name and a face to.

"It isn't acceptable to treat anyone that way," N'mol concurred with her, before Kindra put her own foot down, about a rug of all things. He flicked his gaze to her, then back to Dinah, knowing the matter was lost now. Mentally, he sighed, and heard an answering mental rumble from Tyeth, who was monitoring the situation. Dinah wouldn't hear a word N'mol had to say now that Kindra was involved, though he couldn't blame the Goldrider for behaving as she was taught to behave, either. He moved slightly closer to Dinah, now that her wher was away. The creature hadn't seemed hostile, but N'mol wouldn't take the chance that Dinah chose to suggest the Green catch her claws in him.

"I think the point being made is that behaving the same as him is only going to make things more difficult," he added quietly to Dinah, while C'ren was distracted by F'itz. He lifted his voice and looked across the room. "Bronzerider C'ren, you did volunteer for the search and have made it clear you aren't happy about it. Are you suggesting you don't care who the murderer was? You don't know, or want to know, anything about him?"

C'ren ignored the argument between the young women and the boy, more interested in talking to someone who actually knew what they were going on about. He tightened his crossed arms and looked at F'itz with irritation clearly aimed beyond the pair of them. "Well of course he doesn't share with the rest of us. Keeps his games to himself, W'lin does."

Oddly, that led straight into the question he heard respectfully directed at him from the young Bronzerider. His gaze softened slightly as he looked at N'mol, but it didn't soften the edge of his tongue any. This looked to be a man who was often aggressive and argumentative.

"Why're you Sharding asking me? Some idiot decided to take up a vendetta and now W'lin's playing Lord Holder. Shardit." He glanced at Kindra after the last curse and with a bitter twist of his mouth added, "Apologies, Weyrwoman, but that's the truth of it."

Now that he was drawn away from his chat with F'itz, C'ren's eye caught on the Green wher in his room and the rug she was standing on. He hadn't paid much attention to Dinah or the others, but he was paying attention now. His face began flushing red with rage and it seemed the rider was almost at the end of his rope. "I want that thing out of my weyr! If that fur has been at all ruined, you Sharding bet you or that worthless Master Wherhandler of yours will be replacing it!"
PostPosted: Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:09 pm

"Of course he volunteered - everyone volunteered. If anyone didn't, it'd be obvious they were hiding something, and they'd turn themselves into suspects." Dinah glared icily at Kindra, not giving the slightest hint that Dinahsk's 'accident' with the rug had been anything but. She'd said nothing, given no command they could hear, and they couldn't get her in trouble or make her pay for an accident. "Last I knew, walking across the room wasn't out of control. She can't help having claws any more than your dragon could. I'm not paying for an accident - besides, us handlers don't make enough to pay for such fine things."

If she weren't still annoyed with N'mol for the other day, she might actually have been more inclined to listen to him, since he did agree with her. Nonetheless, she'd take it under advisement. Maybe. Whatever response she might have made to him, she let go when C'ren noticed the damage to one of his prized possessions and proceeded to react. She had to suppress a smirk at his obvious rage - got him. It wasn't quite as satisfying as actually hitting him might have been, but it was pretty good.

"I'm sorry if it's not perfect anymore, but she didn't mean to do it," she lied through her teeth without flinching. She was calmer now, her anger more settled now that she'd struck at the bronzerider and he'd felt it, even if it hadn't been physical. If she got in trouble, so be it - some things were worth it! "She's not a thing, her name's Dinahsk, and she's staying to help us search."

Dinahsk seemed to ignore the commotion, and moved to stick her head under C'ren's bed to see if there was anything to be found, bumping her headknobs a little. Wouldn't all these people be so pleased if she found something somewhere? The green chortled to herself.

Tsubari walked to the weyr that they were looking at this time. It was a pain to put Tsubarisk in his kennel, but he did not want to hear the brown making a racket trying to get in the Sharding place. Stepping up to the room, the handler could hear Dinah going off on the riders.

Sighing he stepped in. "Excuse me for a second." He turned to look at Dinah, a scowl deeply set on his face and unusual for him. He grabbed her arm and pulled her to the side. Talking as softly as he could, "This has to STOP. The more you act like this to the riders, the worse it is for us Handlers. Take your pride and swallow it."
PostPosted: Fri Jan 20, 2012 6:28 pm

Tsubari was lucky he was a wherhandler; it earned him a partial stay of her hand. If one of the riders had dared to grab her like that, she would have pulled back and socked them with little more than a thought. Instead, she ripped her arm from his grasp and tried to shove him away from her. If he hadn't tried to manhandle her, she might have been willing to listen, but in doing so he insured she wouldn't even hear his words. "Side with who you want, but don't you ever touch me again," she snapped, "Or you will regret it."

Dinahsk jerked her head out from under the bed, swinging around to hiss at Tsubari, her eyes a whirling mix of yellow, orange, and red. Her posture was low and ready, her tail lashing in agitation and quite possibly upsetting anything behind her. She didn't move to retaliate, being reluctant to fight by nature, but the display was clear: That was her handler, and he should not touch her so!

Kidra glared at the wherhandler, this had gone beyond personal feuds now and she knew she had to do something about it "Dinah, if you won't even listen to a fellow Wherhandler and respect the belongings of another person, whether or not they are a rider or handler then i'm going to have to ask you to leave." she said, drawing herself up and confronting the wherhandler.

A roar from outside made it obvious that Kindra's Gold was aware of some of the situation and while she had left it to the humans to resolve... she was now angry at the threat level towards her rider. She bellowed at the Wher as she now hovered at the Bronze's Weyr, her eyes flashing red as she mentally ordered the wher to STAND DOWN from the other handler, and especially from Hers as Kindra ordered Dinah. "MINE" she bellowed again.

"Suunath... " murmured Kindra before she rounded on Dinah again "This matter will be reported to your Master believe me." she said, her eyes flashing with pride but she WAS doing her job as a Weyrwoman, Junior or not she and Isley were second only to W'lin until one of the twins Rose first and as such she needed to step up and take charge of situations such as this, arguments in the private quarters of a man who volunteered his rooms to be searched, however grudgingly, were not the way things should go but she did turn to the Bronzerider also "Are you saying this is a bad thing?!" she said hotly "My father is a Lord Holder" she snapped at him. "Its not only the Handler's behaviour that leaves something to be desired" she said to him in disgust.
