Where could he be?
Eva was actually getting a little worried now, pausing mid-step to flip open her phone and check the time, though the darkened sky should have been enough of an indication that it was getting late. The question was: where was Otto? While it wasn't entirely unusual to go a day without bothering the blond, Eva usually at least saw him around the place, being as grumpy as ever.
...But not today. It didn't seem like anyone else knew where he was either.
Perhaps she was simply worrying too much--she could hear Otto's voice in her head now, telling her that she was stupid and insisting that he wasn't some kid--but right after dinner, the girl snatched up her jacket and head out of the building. Where she was going, she wasn't really sure--the lighthouse? The abandoned town? In the end, she chose the latter. If he's not there, then I'll just have to check somewhere else.
For all you know, by the time you get to the town area, Otto would have already returned to the main building.
Eva frowned a little at that thought, and she hummed in consideration. Well, she could just stay put and wait for him to return, but--...no. Something told her that it was important that she went and searched for him, so off to the abandoned town area she went.

Otto hadn't meant to be out so late.
The young blonde had been exploring, as boys and puppies tend to do sometimes. The abandoned town intrigued him, exploring each crumbled or crumbling building searching for treasure. Sure, he probably should spend his spare time training, or taking up a mission. Exploring ghost towns seemed like the better option that day.
He'd only meant to stay an hour or two and then go back in time for dinner. However, he became so entranced in digging through rubble that by the time he left the last building, it was getting dark.
Too dark.
Otto began to worry. What if he didn't make it back before the sun set? Because, unbeknownst to many...
...Otto was terrified of the dark.
It was usually easy enough to hide, since he kept to himself constantly, and there was usually lights inside the building at night. However, this town seemed void of electricity, as did the path leading to it. Or at least it did that day.
Otto inwardly started to panic, speed walking away from the buildings, and soon turning it into a full blown run. His eyes focused on the waning sky, watching as orange turned to purple. Darker and darker...

Brrr, this place was kind of creepy! The fact that the abandoned town was, well, abandoned, did not help elevate Eva's mood in the slightest. As someone who liked being surrounded by a lot of people and light, the darkness and the still silence made her shudder a little. Wherever Otto was, hopefully she would be able to find him and drag him back to the building with her. First though, she would actually have to find him.
How do you plan on doing that? Chara wanted to know, sounding genuinely curious, He didn't pick up his phone, and there are quite a few places that he could be on this island. I'm not sure how you're going find him.
Tearing her gaze away from their surroundings, Eva grinned with confidence as she lifted a hand to touch her hairclip. Easy, Chara. Like this. Stopping in her tracks, the girl thumped her chest lightly and cleared her throat.
Oh, no. Eva--
"PUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPY?! PUPPY WHERE ARE YOOOOOOOOU!?"

Darkness.
Otto took off his shades, hoping that maybe it would help him out. However, the sun had slipped away long ago, and with no light, stars or even moonlight to light the way, Otto was marooned. His heart raced viciously. Panic set in, as he checked his pockets for his phone. It soon dawned on him that he had forgotten it in his room.
No cellphone to light his way.
The boy started to hyperventilate, long having stopped running as he stood in the middle of town. "s**t.." He sunk down into a crouch, holding his head and rocking back and forth. "Shitshitshitshit.." The darkness had eyes. Eyes that watched and waited for him to be left alone in the dark. He had no light to keep the unknown at bay. He was defenseless.
And suddenly Eva yelled at the top of her lungs, breaking the cold murky silence.

Almost immediately after Eva called out, she received a response--a response that was, most likely, from the person she was searching for. Either that, or someone else with a perchance of swearing was lurking around out here. The girl's expression lit up slightly as she turned in the direction that the voice came from. Hmmm, so this way, was it? "Stay where you are, Puppy!" She called, though it wasn't so eardrum bursting this time around, "If you move, I won't be able to find you!"
Unless...he didn't want her to find him? She wasn't sure why he hadn't answered her calls, or why he was out here in the first place, especially when it was getting so late. Was he trying to hide out here for some reason?
Well, she supposed that she would find out once she got to him. Pulling out her cellphone again, she used the dim light to guide herself as best as she could, brows knit in worry. It was hard to judge his exact location based off of his yell, but he should be right around here--
--...what was that lump in the middle of the town? Eva took a few, tentative steps forward. "...Puppy?"

So... It was Eva. The blonde teen stayed as still as a statue, waiting for her to make her way over.
He was torn. Sure, he didn't want to be alone in the dark, but on the other hand, he had no way of hiding how terrified he was if she found him like this. While he was no longer hyperventilating, he was breathing uncomfortably quick, his core shaking with nerves. He needed light. Any light. He hated not being able to see two feet in front of him.
Finally, he heard footsteps, though whether they were Eva's or some assailant from the dark side, he didn't know. Not until he heard her speak again did he turn his head, frightened eyes staring up at the soft glow of her cell phone.
It took a moment, but he found his voice. "...E...Eva?" He asked shakily.

It didn't take a genius to know that something was wrong with Otto. The first clue? He had stuttered slightly when he spoke. The second clue?
He had called Eva by name.
That had really thrown her off. There was no nickname--no "stupid" or "idiot" or any such variety. For a moment, the older girl merely stood there and stared blankly at Otto for a few moments before she finally approached him. She held her cellphone up with one hand, while she reached out with the other and carefully rest it on the boy's shoulder. "Puppy...are you okay? Are you hurt?"
With the help of the faint light from her phone, she realized that there was a strange look in Otto's eyes--something she couldn't recall having seen before. Eva's shoulders tensed slightly, and at the same time, her grip on his shoulder became firmer. Had something attacked him out here? Despite the fact it seemed relatively calm around here, maybe there was something lurking in the shadows...
Letting go of him suddenly, Eva stood up again, scanning their surroundings as best as she could. Unfortunately, her eyes were not made for such dark settings. "What do you say we get going?"

Why wasn't she talking anymore?
Those few moments where she simply stared had Otto terrified. Oh no.. it was a doppelganger? Now that'd he'd made eye contact, was he dinner? He tensed, almost leaning away as she reached out for him. Crap, he really was going to get eaten! A small squeak escaped his throat as her hand touched his shoulder, though he relaxed slightly once she finally spoke.
"I...I.. u-um..n-no.." He stammered with a small voice. "N...not hurt.." He couldn't help it. The stuttering wouldn't ease up. Not while he was nerve wrecked like this.
He watched her anxiously as she pulled away to stand. He made no move to join her right away, not until she suggested they leave. Yes, that was a good plan. With no light, he wasn't able to brave the trek back, nor able to navigate the roads. He nodded stiffly, shakily rising to his feet.

Well...it was good that he wasn't hurt, at least. Still, that strange quiver in his voice...
Instead of walking on ahead, Eva waited until Otto was on his feet and then looped her arm through his. She squinted up at him in the darkness, unable to push away the feeling that something was bothering him. Should she ask what was wrong? If anything was wrong, that was--perhaps she was just imagining things, and maybe that stutter was actually from the cold. It was a little chilly out, after all.
Well, she'd let it pass. "So!" The girl chirped cheerfully, stepping up beside him and bumping her shoulder with his, "Why are you out here so late?"
It was then that she actually noticed the faint shakes. Knitting her brows together, Eva drew away, ready to remove her coat. "Wow, Puppy. Are you really that cold? Do you want my coat and scarf?"

Otto didn't squirm like he normally would as Eva looped arms with him, but it didn't mean he liked it either. As much as he was a brat about things, bratiness was no match for fear. The thought crossed his mind that his fear of the dark probably made the creatures of Halloween stronger, and that made him feel sick. Horrid, wretched things...
Her attempts to distract, or maybe it was just small talk, didn't aid the boy's edgy demeanor, as he looked over his shoulder constantly. "I was just.. lookin' around.." He answered in a mumble.
Otto's edgy gaze stilled on Eva as she noticed the shuddering. Crap. While he should have been happy that she assumed he was cold, it was humiliating instead. He narrowed his gaze in a glare, but due to his condition, he simply looked... sad.. pathetic.
"Keep'em.." He grouched, turning his gaze to the ground.

Eva wanted to know who the hell kicked their puppy.
Because really, look at him! That face. Just look at that face. Without warning, she suddenly stopped walking and--because she was hanging onto the boy's arm--she ended up pulling poor Otto to a stop as well. Riiiight smack dab in the middle of the darkness, with the only light coming from her cellphone. Her voice was firm as she spoke.
"Puppy." A pause. "Otto. If you're not cold...then what is it? Why are you shaking?" And so edgy? ...And why was he constantly glancing over her shoulder?
Suddenly feeling a little paranoid, Eva threw a quick glance over her own shoulder. Nothing there. Sighing in relief, she turned her gaze back to the blond boy, lifting her brows expectantly. When she realized that he probably wouldn't be able to make out her expression that well in the darkness, she lifted her phone and pointed the glowing screen towards herself.
...And of course, that didn't look creepy at all.

Otto inhaled sharply as Eva stopped so suddenly. No! No no no nononono not in the middle of the depths of the abysmal darkness! Not here! The teen's heart raced even faster, every inch of his psyche screaming to be back at Dues. He appreciated being called by name, seeing as how being called puppy while near having a panic attack over a fear of the dark was... humiliating. However, there was a pause. From her, and him. He was hesitant to openly admit what scared him. Worse off, Eva's attempts to light her face did not help. This was all Otto saw; "AAH!" The boy yelped, prying his arm away from Eva and staggering back. "GET AWAY FROM ME!!"

HOLY CRAP WHAT THE HELL WAS EVEN--?!
Otto wasn't the only one who was startled--Eva swore that she jumped a meter in the air at the sudden yell, and she jerked away from the boy in shock. There was a second of hesitation, and then her arm shot out, fingers catching and curling firmly around the blond's wrist. "Calm down, Otto! What has gotten you so spooked!?"
She still had the cellphone to her face, but on closer inspection, it really was just Eva. She wasn't a murderer or a monster lurking in the darkness--at worst, she was just a girl who really, really loved to hug and tease other people, Otto included. However, for once, she wasn't attempting to poke any fun at the other death trainee.
It was clear that Eva was waiting for some kind of explanation. "Is...is something there? Is that why you're so frightened?" She cast another concerned look over her shoulder.

The shivering got worse, his forehead and palms sweaty with fear. Eva's firm grasp had scared him at first, trying in vain to pull away. After a moment he realized that no, that hadn't been some creature. It was still only Eva.
Wide blue eyes seem to calm every slighter, darting side to side then back to Eva.
Rationally, he knew nothing was out there. Or maybe there was, it was anyone's guess at Dues Ex. Still, that terrified little boy inside the teen's mind couldn't brave the dark.
"N-n-no..no no-thing.." He stammered, his voice quivering uncontrollably. He knew he had to fess up. "I-it's...I'm..s-scared.."
He shut his eyes tightly, his free hand pointing shakily into the dark night. "...Th...Th-the dark..."
He was still so terrified that a severed hand or something would grab his ankles, admitting he was scared was easier to deal with now than sober, so to speak.

And here was something that Eva could not--and would not--make fun of: genuine fear. Her expression was neutral as she scanned Otto's face, though she really didn't need to to know that he was being honest. Under any other circumstance, she knew that the boy would not be so willing to reveal any details about himself, especially not about something as personal as one's fear. Taking a deep breath, she angled her cellphone so that the screen was pointing ahead of them, and she moved to take his arm again.
"I know the way back. We can talk after we're back at the dorms." You know, where it was bright. The fact that Otto had a fear of darkness wasn't entirely surprising to Eva either--considering what they were, and what she was sure they had all seen ever since they were children, it was a wonder to her that not more of them were afraid of the dark or of shadows.
She began to lead him back then, heading down the same path that she had taken to get there in the first place. It would be a bit of a walk in the dark, but hopefully Otto would be a little more reassured with another person there (and more importantly, a light, however faint it was). Eva seemed a lot more serious than usual (yes, even she had her moments of responsibility and maturity) as she focused on getting them back to the main building.
