The room which young Audrey had been led to was much larger than she had anticipated.
After spending a good deal of time being escorted about the northern base, traversing its many corridors and halls, the Auvinian had assumed that she was being shown to what might be an office of some sort. considering the size of the snowy castle, it would of been no surprise had this 'office' been on a grader scale, but once her guide pushed open the door to her destination she'd found the meeting place to be much more dramatic.
A whole dining room, expansive and dimly lit with the warmth of scattered candles. At the center was a wooden table fit for no less then twenty people, chairs still lining it's edges as if a party of ghosts might be filling them. Though, as Audrey stepped into the dining hall, itching to free herself from the watchful eyes of her escort and abandon the chill that still lingered outside, she found her stride slowed as her sights finally caught hold of the figure at the end of the table. The Adviser, Sage Estratus, sat across the room, well lit by the fireplace that rested within the wall not far behind her.
The girl had paused once she had noticed the woman, a rare moment of nervousness washing over her as the entrance to the room had shut behind her. She'd nearly flinched at the unexpected sound of the door clanking closed, but she quickly gathered herself as her eyes remained focused on the lady across the hall. She had not looked up herself yet, still fussing with various papers lined up before her on the table, the only sound within the place being the shuffling of the documents and quill against stationary. Audrey made a skeptical face, brows pinching as she considered the silence, before forcing herself to relax her shoulders and attempting to quickly brush her bangs from her face. Pushing forward again, now with what anxiety she had being smothered and pushed to the back of her mind, she found herself at the edge of the table, standing confidently beside the end chair.
"M'Lady?"

The scratching of quill to parchment had been going on long before Ms. Audrey Hatch had even reached the front of the castle front and a hefty stack of papers sat at the Adviser's side while she continued to scratch away. She did not lift her gaze or change her pace at all when the guard led the young girl in. He bowed, as silent as his superior, and stepped out of the room, closing the door behind him but no doubt staying beside it for safety's sake.
Without a word, Lady Estratus lifted her left hand as she continued to scribble, waving it gently in Audrey's direction. A small gust of wind rushed across the table, picking up strength the further it went. The chair at the far end of the table moved without being touched, pushing itself out for Audrey to have a seat.
"I will be with you in just a moment..." she spoke calmly, her voice loud enough to call across the room with little difficulty but there was no effort to the words. The further the quill got on the paper, the more hurried her pen hand seemed to get, but the writing quality was unaffected and before long she was done with words, merely ending the final sheet with the etched symbol of the Fellowship.
Her own chair scraped against the stone floor as she made to stand, placing the final sheet of paper on top of the stack, capping the ink well and moving all of the unnecessary objects for this meeting to a small, empty table further down the hall. She returned to her seat promptly and for the first time since Audrey had entered the room, Lady Estratus' amber gaze was upon her. Hands clasped upon the smooth wooden table top, she stared emotionlessly at the young girl before for some moments in silence before she undauntedly commented, "You look hungry."
True to form, this naught sixteen year old girl before her looked the part of an urchin much like the Clemmings boy within their walls. Her scraggly hair, the baggy clothes dangling off her frame in an attempt to hide her malnutrition, it all spoke the same to the Fellowship Adviser and if this girl, young or not, was to be an ally, then first and foremost that would be taken care of. Sage remembered all too clearly what Elsie Crane had gone through to complete her mission, fumbling about in the dark, nearly frostbitten, just to return here. The mission was important, but so was the health of their allies.
"I was about to have some stew, myself," she added, once more rising to her feet. This time she began approaching Audrey and the door behind her, hands held behind her back. Great care had been given to keep blank ink from staining her long white sleeves or dotting any of the pinstripes across her clothing while she wrote and the outfit looked pristine, if not out of place in this base of magic and whimsy. The monochromatic colors did not align with the vibrant purple banners, the bright golds accenting them, or the colors of any of the other mages lining the halls.
Not bothering to open the door, Sage calmly knocked and received a quick "Yes, m'lady?" in response. "Two warm bowls of stew, please," she gave a moments pause, glancing over Audrey, "Make sure the contents are substantial." A swift "aye" was given before the sound of thick, heavy boots against stone trailed off down the hall outside. With a turn of her heel and not a second glance to Audrey, she was back to her seat and in the same position as before. Their gazes met again. "If it is no trouble, we will discuss your mission after the meal. I trust you had little difficulty in arriving here?" Lord Yizhaq had been the one in contact with this young girl, hadn't he? It was hard to keep track of where their contacts came from at times, but considering the Clemmings boy's relationship with the man, Sage found it unsurprising if that were the case for her as well. The Grimm Lord had a knack for picking up other keepers, particularly those with nowhere to go.

Audrey flinched again as the chair beside her slid out from under the table, looking down to the seat before her gaze returned to the woman across the table. She'd nearly opened her mouth to speak, but before she could even properly form the right words the lady had finally spoken up and left the urchin standing in silence. Unwilling to sit, the Hatch girl merely placed a hand to settle on the backrest of the piece of furniture as she observed her host with furrowed brows and tight lips. Time seemed to move at a bitter, slow pace as she was forced to wait silently as the mage continued to put her penmanship to use, and just as the repetitive scratch of the quill against paper began to get on Audrey's nerves, Sage had ceased her work.
The woman had moved to place her work in a neat pile, and lifted her eyes to meet the Auvinian for the first time since she had entered the vast room. The blond's back straightened, taken aback by the direct contact, though her face looked to the one across from her with no fear but instead a respectful determination, though her jaw felt tight. She was preparing herself, all this stupid tension surely wouldn't shake her, she would prove to be a valuable asset, no matter how young she was nor what her roots were...
This is why when Lady Estratus parted her lips to speak, it was rather disappointing to the girl that she had been taken off guard.
"W-What," She questioned, almost incredulous that those were the words that the northerner had decided to open this important discussion with, and looked to the woman in mild disbelief. I was about to have some stew, myself seemed to be her only response, and as Sage raised from her seat and traveled down the table along it's smooth edge Audrey continued to stare at her with knit brows. Once she'd passed her and reached the door not far behind them, the pickpocket continued to keep her eyes awkwardly glued on her as she attempted to make sense of the situation. It wasn't until the mage glanced back at her and make her comment about the contents of the stew that Audrey felt an embarrassed knot form in her stomach. "No, no, that really isn't necessary, Ma'am! I'm not hungry, I'm fine, really. I don't need your food--," noticing her tone becoming louder, defensive, she pauses, catching herself before giving a curt sigh, looking up and over through her bangs to the Lady who'd made her way back to her seat through the little speech , "Thank you--- but, really, no."
Another awkward pause.
"Y-yes, you can eat... I can wait until your meal is finished just fine."
One more.
"Ah-- Yes--or No. As in, no... I got here just fine. Little difficulty. Fine."
The girl's obvious disdain of her sudden lack of eloquence could be easily noted by the reddening of her cheeks, followed by her fingers clutching anxiously at the back of her chair.

What little semblance of pleasantries the dark haired woman showed to the young Audrey were clearly wearing thing with each shaken syllable that passed through her cold lips. The Adviser's hands gripped one another tightly in her lap, posture turning rigid, and she held her jaw tightly for the entirety of her clumsy reply.
Only once she was certain there was nothing else to be said on the matter from the young grimm did she begin calming herself and with a sigh she locked eyes with the Hatch girl.
"You will eat," she began coldly, "Because I need my people strong and well cared for." It was clear this girl had something against charity towards her. Perhaps she could rest more easily knowing it was not mere kindness but a semblance of selfishness. That said, Lady Estratus allowed herself to lean back in her chair, fingers lightly drumming the front of the arm rests. "'Fine' is a good way for a journey to go, especially in the harshness of these mountains. Tell me..." she gave a slight pause, looking Audrey over once more, taking note of her dark emerald eyes and wheat colored hair.
"Do you hail from Mishkan, Ms. Hatch?"
Time was being wasted to some degree with the questions Lady Estratus posed while waiting for their stew to arrive, but all inquiries held a purpose and these were no different. However small or purposeless they seemed, even a question such as "how do you find the weather here?" might hold valuable information about the person in question and Sage was sure to ask it as well. In essence, the meager discussion before and during the meal would pose a sort of interview process and allow the Fellowship Adviser to at least get a taste for the girl before any decisions would be made about her mission.
After a few more minutes of idle probing, there was a knock at the door to announce the returned presence of one of the guards. Lady Estratus beckoned him inside, "Enter," and in he stepped with two bowls full of steaming broth, meat and a scant portion of potatoes. As he set both bowls down he bowed his head to the strange girl and his leader in this castle before retreating to his post and closing the door behind him. The bowls were wooden, as well as the spoons which rested comfortably against the side -- sturdy Shyregoedian craftsmanship.
"It becomes cold quickly, I'm afraid," Sage noted as she swirled the spoon in her bowl, "I suggest you eat quickly or it will go to waste." Surely young Audrey, on her own, cold and hungry, could appreciate not letting a warm meal be wasted due to stubbornness. If they both ate quickly they could get this meeting done with and the headache that was edging into the forefront of Lady Estratus' temple would begin to ebb away with warm food in her belly.

Audrey furrowed her brows at the demand, but as she allowed herself accept it she released a breath and lowered her shoulders. "Alright," she replied, almost in a groan of defeat. She couldn't argue in this situation, which greatly frustrated her, though in the back of her mind she knew the chance at a meal was rare and almost, almost, worth the pangs it shot through her pride.
As the young girl finally, unlatched her grip from the chair before her, she made a hesitant change in position, moving about to the front of it and taking a seat. The thing felt large an claustrophobic at the same time, suited for someone of much more.. healthy standards, and locking her within with it's steady armrests.
Though still embarrassed by her poor performance in speaking to the Lady, Audrey refused to allow herself to stare down at her lap or the table before, she would not stuffy the tapestries nor pretend to be fixing an article of clothing for the sake of avoidance. She looked forward, jade eyes resting on the form across from her in an attempt at showing some kind of fearless respect. As Sage parted her lips to speak again, the blond's gaze wavered, growing more alert before almost baffled at her question until she settled once more. For a moment, the inquiry had unleashed several proposals for answers into her mind. Perhaps this was an opportunity to rewrite some things. Ah yes, Mishkan, possibly a much more decent place of origin, though Audrey could not say she had even been to the place.
"I do not, Lady. "
But, no. She knew better than that, and lying was not a habit she took lightly, nor ever hoped to develop. She had learned by now that it could be such a vile, nasty thing.
However before she could intake another breath and reveal her home, there came a knock at the door, and the woman called a guard inside who silently presented each of them with a bowl of stew. Sage must have noticed the way Audrey did not move into to enjoy the meal, and simply looked down into the bowl, watching the broth swirl inside, or maybe she was giving a friendly warning, but the girl did not give a nod nor reach for the handle of her spoon until the Lady had warned her of it's declining temperature. It seemed as through it took her much longer to actually bring any of the stew to her mouth, regretfully letting the warm soup run down her throat.

The Adviser wasted little time tucking into her meal, pale fingers bringing the spoon to her lips. Nary a sound was made and her eyes closed to enjoy the warmth and flavor it brought to her tongue, then the rest of her body as it slipped easily down her throat. For some minutes there was silence between the two, only the gentle sloshing of liquid and light clicking of wooden utensils. Once Lady Estratus finished her meal, she rested the spoon in the bowl, cleared her throat and stepped up to a nearby table, retrieving a dark purple square of cloth neatly folded. She dabbed at her lips with a corner, took another and rested it on the corner of the table near Audrey without a word.
Not another sound passed through her lips until she returned to her seat. The high ranking woman set the bowl aside, clasped her hands in front of her and watched the young Hatch girl finish her own meal with a blank but patient expression.
"I suppose you would prefer to cease the niceties and get this meeting over with," Lady Estratus' fingers tapped lightly on the backs of her hands before unfolding and resting them flat on the cool surface of the table. "As would I."
Once more, the Fellowship Adviser rose from her seat and stepped away from the table to the more open space of the room. Standing with her arms behind her back, she gave a nod to Audrey, beckoning her to do the same and approach. When she had done so, she leaned back and inspected Audrey, her amber eyes roaming all over the currently homeless girl with a keen and scrupulous eye. Just when the silence from her was no doubt becoming a matter of awkwardness, she held out one hand expectantly. "Did you bring what I asked of you?"

Audrey spent a good enough deal of time picking gingerly at her meal before finally deciding to lift the wooden spoon up to her lips. A warm dish was rare for her nowadays, and once the stew hit her stomach it was a foreign sensation. She could not deny that it somehow felt nice, that the food was much better than what she had been surviving off of, and her need for something substantial was not easily overlooked. She ate quietly and slowly though, not savoring the taste as much as pacing herself.
This, however, lead her to notice that the woman across the table had already finished her meal, and was waiting upon the young girl. The Lady's eyes so steadily settled on Audrey made the urchin feel rather self-conscious, embarrassed. This ensured that she quickly finish off what of the meal her body could handle, and regrettably leaving aside what was left over once her belly began to resent the substance with pangs of pain. This discomfort was not much of a distraction though, and was something she pushed aside along with the bowl before her.
It was then that Lady Estratus rose from her seat, and wandered toward the open floor. Only when she beckoned her over, did the Hatch girl flinch, then steadily rise to make her way to the woman.
She knit her brows, spine stiff and lips pressed into a tight line as she was studied. Audrey could not help but feel incredibly awkward before her superior's gaze, as if just based off her ragged appearance the woman's judgement would be made. The girl's face remained determined, however, despite the heat she began to feel pricking in her cheeks as her nerves continued to tense.
Finally the silence was broken.
"Ah, yes! Yes I did it's right here," Audrey fumbled in response, twisting herself about to reach into the small satchel resting just behind her hip. It took no longer than a moment to retrieve the thing, being the largest item ( and of course one of the only) in the bag. When the young lady turned her eye back up toward the woman, her arms extended to present the spoils of her hard work. The pickpocket could not help smirk as she realized that this whole trial was finally coming to a close, the cold porcelain in her hands proof enough of her skill. She subtly exuded pride, the smile not yet leaving her face.
" Of course I did. I wouldn't dare show up without it."

The sudden change in demeanor from the girl was well noted, her sudden enthusiasm tugging slightly at the corner of the Adviser's mouth, though she did not allow herself to grin despite the mutual feelings arising in her gut. This mission was an interesting one, perhaps a demand that the rest of the Fellowship and surely the Grand Magus would not make. She could see the importance of this item while they decided not to, but even so there was a sense of foreboding from it even being in the same room with her.
Sage's hand twitched slightly when the Hatch girl presented the bone white mask, her expression souring if only at the prospect of having to touch such a horrid relic. With only a momentary hesitation, her pale fingers reached out and carefully curled around it. As soon as it made contact with her flesh, there was a sinking feeling in her stomach, a queasiness one might get in the face of particularly violent carnage. While most members of the House, indeed, were not of the violent (or at least murderous) sort, large pockets of them all around Panymium certainly were and it seemed that Audrey had managed to find a mask that belonged to such an individual.
It was an older mask, smudged in places, dented in others, but otherwise well maintained. Lady Estratus gently turned it over in her hands, inspecting every minute detail it had to offer. Briefly, she wondered if Lord Yizhaq's abilities would glean anything useful from this item and she made a mental note to inquire as such at her next free moment. A silence crept between them as she scrutinized the mask, and only when she let her eyes drift from it did she realize she had been holding her breath. One soft, long exhale granted Audrey a single compliment -- "Good," -- before she let her hands and the mask rest at her side. "Now, if you would, tell me precisely what happened during your mission?"

'Good'
Audrey's face brightened further at the approval that broke the silence between the two. She had almost allowed herself to fall into relief for a moment before such luxuries fluttered away with the woman's next words. The southerner's smile faded.
She paused, rapidly attempting to regather her thoughts, swallowing down a lump of anxiety before parting her chapped lips. " I-I did as I was asked my Lady," she responded, brows knitting as she folded her arms defensively against her chest. " I didn't engage em'. I stole it."
This was true, the mask had been stolen right off of the man's face.
As the thought crossed the girls mind, she nearly flinched. His face was not something she would prefer to remember. Instead she merely raised a hand to brush her bangs further out of her eyes, gave a short inhale, and straightened her back. Looking onward she addressed Sage once more. " I acted under the restrictions you gave me, and you have your mask. Is a boring story really necessary?"

Sage frowned.
For all intents and purposes, it was somewhat difficult to detect a frown on the woman's face because she almost always appeared to be doing so anyway. However, the way her brows subtly knit and her eyes narrowed as they bore into Audrey's was enough of a hint.
"I suppose I'll have to take you at your word..." the Adviser trailed off, running her fingers over the porcelain of the mask and diverting her gaze down to it. Even without a face behind it, the mask was menacing. It held the eerie comfort of the Plague Doctor, twisted and tainted like their beliefs into something monstrous. One of her fingers poked through a large eye hole and Sage's lips became taut, brow crinkling further before she turned and set it on the table beside her. "In that case, Ms. Hatch, I'll need to confirm something else," her voice was calm, emotionless as ever, and as she turned back to the girl her arms crossed.
Raising a single brow, Sage scrutinized the girl further as if searching for something in particular. "I was told you are a Plague bearer. Is this true?" Her fingers tightened against the white fabric of her shirt in anticipation and apprehension.

Instinctively, the girl shifted her stance, a hand trailing to hover protectively over her side pocket. There was no hesitation here however, and Audrey was quick to look the Adviser in the face. Her answer, was short and swift.
" Yes. "
This was a topic the Auvinian girl was not fond of, but her stature as well as the steady way she kept her gaze forward and strong was a testament to her expectations that her precious item would be brought up in conversation. She was well aware that plagues were a valuable commodity to the various factions, and knew that in the Fellowship that would most likely be no different. This thought left the girl on guard. The presence of a fearful undertone in the child's presentation was only subdued by stubborn delusions that she could easily protect herself from any possible threat to the tail's ownership. Perhaps even, there was a glimmer of hope that clung like a leech to the blonde's skepticism, that maybe this stoic lady before her may not be as manipulative as she often thought she might be. Audrey had come here because the Fellowship had similar ideals, right...?
The orphan was not one to easily fall to hope, however. She knew better than that.

When the wolf tail was presented, the Adviser's eyes widened the slightest bit. It looked so unassuming at first, just a plain tail with a blackened end where it was cut. Whether that was the source of its taint, Sage wasn't sure, but something happened in the young girl's hands and the large bushy tail seemed to twitch. Something dark shifted, unfurled, and a small wolfish head made of taint peeked up beneath its fluff at its master.
"It's mobile?" Lady Estratus murmured, reaching a hand up to touch her chin as she examined this unique specimen from a distance. The Adviser made no motion to reach out, no approaching steps to get a closer look, she merely watched its movements in its owner's hands. "Could you tell me how long ago you came to acquire it?" Straight to the point now. It was obvious this girl did not like speaking of the finer details in her journey and, while certainly suspicious, verbal scrutiny would only slow this meeting down further. Sage had to be on point and precise; body language and overall demeanor when answering questions would be enough of a clue into this girl's intentions and motivations.
If her own Plague were present, he could have easily informed her just from the girl's smell whether she had any run ins with the cult beyond acquiring the mask. Seeing as he was busy with other matters, she was on her own. Tapping her lower lip slightly, brow furrowed and amber eyes attentive. To say she wasn't curious of the story of acquisition proper would be a lie, but there were others in their ranks who had Plagues in their care that she did not know the stories of. Some, perhaps, she could not know. The Adviser had to put her faith in the Fellowship. At the first sign of dubious behavior, anyone would be brought in for questioning -- Audrey Hatch was no different.

"He's pretty active, yes. Do you mean most aren't like this," she inquired, raising a brow at the Lady's comment before turning her eyes down to the tiny critter in her palms. The inky wolf arched and stretched it's limbs in her hands before it began it's usual nonsensical scurrying about; Audrey turning her wrists so that it could climb around and perch itself atop her knuckles. It was hard for the urchin to imagine a plague that didn't exude so much personality, even when still just an item. She hadn't met many others in her time away from home, though, the ones she had were far from passive.
The girl barely heard the next question as she was distracted by the little creature attempting a darling leap from her fingertips; however Audrey was quick to snatch at his tail and hold onto him tight, hissing a 'Tsk!' as him as she did. As Sage finished her sentence, the girl looked back up, thick brows raised, allowing the words to register in her mind.
"Oh," the girl finally replied, the tail still dangling lamely from her grip. She began to gather him back up into her palms as she replied, her gaze back focused on the plague, jade glaring down at it as if communicating her displeasure with his embarrassing her in front of company. "A few months, I'd say. I haven't exactly been keeping track of time."

While Audrey answered, the Adviser's gaze was locked to the tail and the inky wolf attached to it as it scurried about her hands like a mouse. "Not especially," she answered simply, leaving the matter at that. There had been some she'd seen in the past that were animated as such, others tainted but still living -- or perhaps they had merged so intensely with the plague that they could not live without it. In all her years of experience, there were very few that were not as motionless as their untainted counterparts and the only one that sprang to mind immediately that spoke otherwise was Lord Yizhaq's bird of prey.
Lady Estratus nodded, drawing a hand to her face to lightly cover her mouth while a single finger tapped thoughtfully against her cheek. The time it took for plagues to be nurtured into excitos was something she could never fully wrap her mind around. In some cases, it was a very fast progression after the Grimm acquired it, but in others it could take months or years. Her own was fairly fast, though only in the most subjective terms. The tainted blade had been in her presence and family's possession for years before she laid hands on it and it was only when she took hold of its hilt that it wriggled free into a sentient being.
"I see. Have you met any others in your position? Those with tainted items, or perhaps the conscious Plagues?" These questions, while important to her, likely did little for the girl. After asking her last, Sage took the tip of her thumb nail between her teeth and glanced to the side briefly before letting out a sigh and taking a more casual stance, crossing her arms and resting her rear against the thick edge of the dining table. Her legs crossed slightly at the ankles and she tilted her head to keep an observant eye on both Plague and Grimm. "Is this why you came here, Ms. Hatch? Why you risked life and limb to acquire a mask that, for all you are aware, serves no purpose? Motivations are important for me to understand, Ms. Hatch. I must know why you sought the Fellowship in particular, why you were compelled to agree to the mission, and why you intend to keep this Plague." There were other questions of importance, as well -- such as what young Audrey planned to do once she was taken into the Fellowship's protection -- but Sage did not want to overload the poor girl's mind or intimidate her from the opportunity. Her situation, however, seemed quite unique and if Audrey did not want to tell her exactly how the mask was acquired then she would need to get information about the girl more directly.
