Following the Kells Run waters, a tan wolf could be found. Slightly dazed and obviously lost, he had a look of perplexity on his countenance. Where in the world was he? Split didn't normally follow the river so far out and he most certainly did not want to run into the Redwood decay that so many spoke of. It was dangerous, and made home for many rough and tumble characters. Scary characters, different characters. Different.

Taking a swift breath in, the wolf stiffened up. This was different!! He didn't like different and had no idea how in the world he would fix the different. No tree was similar, his home was far enough away that he could no longer smell it, and he hand't seen a single soul in what seemed like forever. All for what? A damned rabbit. A white one. ...One that got away. Gritting his teeth at the idea of him allowing such a thing to happen, Split decided to sit down.

Nope. Not moving anymore. Gonna wait until I familiarize myself with the area. Then I won't be afraid. Then I will be okay and this won't bother me and maybe I can go home or.... or....

A high pitched whine split the air as he started to stress himself out. His tail tucked between his legs. He obviously was not getting familiar with the area, and panicking in the process.

Coyote had been idling about, wondering just what to do next. She was starting to get bored and an idle mind was a dangerous thing...especially for others. Surely there was something out there with which to amuse herself. Not like that last surly one whose pack had chased her away after one tinie, tiny little incident. There was no need for that, surely? It was not as though anyone had been injured...permanently.

A nasty little grin flickered over her maw. Ah, but it was fun while it lasted. She rose and mad her way farther upriver, hoping to stumble upon something.

As fate would have it, she soon caught scent of something...another wolf. Oh, lovely. As she padded silently closer, the dark femme wondered just what sort of game would she play with this new toy.

Too oblivious to notice the scent of another closing in on him, the paniced, out of place wolf continued to whine and whimper in fear. He wasn't good at coping, especially when it came to being in a new place. Why couldn't someone come find him already and bring him back to the pack? They all knew he had trouble, and his mother was important enough for them to care about his... issues.

Yes, he was a failure in his mothers eyes. Her an alpha of a pack, while he was omega and barely able to live on his own. Nothing was handed down to him either, he just had enough luck to keep living. Barely. Maybe one day he would be able to be entrusted with a task of his own for the pack. Unlike his brothers and sisters, he did have a ability with finding others, and was rather good at identifying things that didn't belong.

What could he do with those abilities though? Flicking his ears back in thought, his teeth chattered. Still unable to cope, but at least he could live in his head for awhile, right?

Coyote caught a glimpse of her quarry through the underbrush. Oh, the poor dear. He looked like he might jump out of his skin at the slightest fright. She grinned to herself. Perhaps he could use a friend.

The she-wolf assumed her least intimidating countenance and and padded down to the river.

"Greetings, brother wolf," she said kindly enough. "You look troubled. Perhaps I could help?"

Green eyes grew to the size of small boulders as the sound of a soft, she-wolfs voice broke through his thoughts. Split Wheat's immediate response was for his hair to bristle as he quickly jumped to his feet, front paws pointing towards her as he backed up. Still his tail was tucked under, but he wouldn't let her hurt him without... Wait.

She didn't look too threatening. Her face even seemed nice to him, but still! He could be only a few more miles to the Redwoods, or worse!! Maybe she was one of them, the ones his pack always spoke of. Oh dear, this was not going to be good at all.

"What! G-go away!!!" Moving away quicker, his back paws hit the rivers edge, and soon after he fell. Gravity taking its course as he dropped from the high edge draping over the river, only his front paws and body keeping him from falling completely in the water.

How did he always end up in these sort of situations?!? "AH!!!" Would she help? Could she help? Would he die? Oh no, why why why?!?!?

Well, it looked like she was right about one thing. He had certainly tried to jump out of his skin. Wait. Surely he would not be that stupid...or fearful of a kindly-looking stranger.

Oh, but he was! He had actually backed himself up into the river and thought he was going to drown! How delicious.

Inwardly howling with glee at her luck, Coyote's demeanor held nothing but concern for the strange male.

"Oh! Hold on! Let me help you!" she cried and hurried over to him, intent on grabbing him by the scruff and hauling him ashore.

"NO!" He shouted without thinking, then quickly replied again with, "I mean... Yes! Help." He cringed inwardly at allowing a complete stranger to help him with this problem, but he couldn't help it. He wasn't getting anywhere with his struggles to move up, and he certainly didn't want to fall down.

Yes, this was what he had to do. He still wouldn't trust her though. Nope. She had to be one of them redwood creeps. Or a lone wolf! They were even worse. They had decided that it was better to be alone than in a pack. Or they were kicked out. Cause they did bad. Yup. They would have to have done bad to be kicked from a pack, look at him. He was still allowed to live with his pack even though he was utterly useless.

Drooping his ears at his realization that, yes, he was utter s**t, his body stopped struggling, He didn't care anymore. What was the point in caring? The pack was probably happy he didn't come back. Maybe he would allow this she-wolf stranger to kill him.

"...Do what you must..."

With his permission, she followed through with her intent, and dragged his back half out of the water. With that, she let go of his scruff and backed up a little.

"Poor dear," she said with concern. "I'm terribly sorry. I did not mean to startle you. Are you alright?"

Watching him go from fearful to desperate to resigned all in a matter of seconds, Coyote came to a realization. Oh, yes. This one would be great fun. Far too much fun to pass up on. She would enjoy playing with him very much. Now, how best to enjoy him...

Ear perked up slightly at her coddling of him, however he didn't say a word. She didn't deserve them, even if she had saved him from the waters. He didn't even know her name after all! How could he trust another wolf if they didn't even share their name with him. Or did he have to ask for it first? Knitting his brows together, Wheat's green eyes watched the she-wolf intently.

"What is your name."

Yes, perhaps it was a bit forward, and may have sounded rude. What did he care though. She hadn't said it, so he had to ask for it. Everyone that had ever approached him before at least tried to get familiar with him. Not her.

This one was weird, and he didn't like weird. But maybe she had a redeeming quality to her, other than saving him of course.

Rude little thing, wasn't he? After all the trouble she had gone to to save him from drowning, she did not even warrant a thank you? Never mind that the river here really was not very deep and he probably would have been fine even without her help.

Well, she could not really blame him for being suspicious. After all, despite appearances, her intentions were not pure. Still, it was awfully rude. She could have been the kindest of souls, and oh, how that would have stung her, then. Think how her poor sister would have felt if she were in the same situation. Coyote laughed inwardly at the thought. Poor little Hawk would probably be heartbroken.

"Oh!," she exclaimed, resuming her facade. "How remiss. I was so worried that I have forgotten my manners. My name is Coyote. Who are you?"

There it was, her name. She was less scary now that he at least knew what she called herself. If it was her real name or not, he didn't really care. He had something to go by now. Coyote, the black she-wolf, his rescuer, his new worry, but perhaps she could become a friend?

"Coyote, thank you. I..." Stopping mid thought the wolf took a quick look around. Nothing in the area. All of the forest was quiet. Too quiet. "Where are we?" Maybe she knew the way back to his pack. If not, he would have to follow the river back. Which unfortunately for him, would take almost all day to do.

Scowling at the idea of having to walk alone, Split Wheat eyed the she-wolf. She was pretty, and seemed nice enough. She even helped him out of the river. ...and he forgot to offer his name to her! "Oh! Umm, Sorry. I am... easily distracted. I am Split Wheat."

Well, that was better. At least he had some manners, even if it took a while for him to remember them.

"Think nothing of it," she demurred. "You were upset. In fact, I was going to ask if I could help, you seemed so worried before."

"Ah, and yes. I know where we are. We are very near the southernmost end of the forest," she said, though that was not strictly accurate. They were more east than south. Quite close to Redwood, in fact. Perhaps she would lead him on a merry chase...

Wheat's eyes watered slightly from her understanding of his situation, and what was more, she was willing to help him get back to his pack! That would be much, much better than going by himself. This Coyote... perhaps she could be trusted. His pack told him to be less leery of strangers after all and his situation was... dismal at best. However, he still didn't feel right. He really was paranoid.

"Oh, umm... Well, I couldn't really make a pretty she-wolf like yourself take care of someone like me. I could just... follow the river back. ...Alone... By myself." To anyone it would be like a signal, telling them that all he needed was a little more assurance that he wouldn't be a pain to them. However, perhaps he was still weighing his options as well. Should he ask her where she lived? Would that help him settle his shaky feelings of trust for her?

"...Coyote, I can't help but ask. Where do you live? Your not one of..." he paused for a moment and thought of his words carefully, then decided not to continue. "Actually, never mind." Letting his head droop from the overflow of paradoxical feelings, Wheat decided to just wait. It was better that way.

"Oh," she said coyly. "You flatter me. And it is really no trouble. I enjoy giving a fellow wolf help." My, oh, my. What an amusing little male. So willing to trust her, with so little encouragement. Such flattery, too! Reminded her of that last little male who was so eager to win her affections...

Well, she could dwell on that another time. For now, she had this little toy to play with, and she could not be neglecting him.

"It's quiet alright. I don't mind. I live with my pack a little ways north of here," she lied smoothly. Truly, it was getting easier all the time -- speaking untruths with such sincerity that even her eyes said it must be so. Who would ever suspect such a sweet, kindly female as herself of lying? She smiled at him.

"Please. I insist. Let me help you home."

Wheat watched the black she-wolf, not saying much as he mulled over his options. She had said she wasn't troubled with helping him out, but she would be going a long way to get back. And when she finally did get to the pack she would be told to leave immediately because she was part of another pack. He couldn't let that happen to her.

"Well, you see..." He began, getting up and pacing about, try his best to calm himself as he picked his brain on how to let her know. "You see my pack, they would be mean to you since you are part of another pack. They are very picky. We could go half way. Then... you are not far away, and I am not either?" That could surely work, right? He was being sensitive to her. Right?

"Oh! And don't take it the wrong way! I think you... are kind of nice. I just want to make sure you are safe." He bobbed his head, reassuring her with his words. She was starting to become familiar to him, making him feel less leery and jumpy. Perhaps it was a good thing that he bumped into the stranger when he did.
