Ishimara Reikai
Zaine Tsukioma

This interview will take place on a stroll throughout the Gotei, it will be to indicate as to the validity of the captain candidate Reikai Ishimara. The participant has 2 weeks to respond to the posts of the one conducting the interview.

Standing outside the entrance to the Gotei Captain Zaine Tsukioma began to tap his foot lightly, the person he was to be interviewing was running dangerously close to being late and the captain had recently gotten over a particularly nasty cold, so his mind was still fuzzy and his body tired from fighting the illness off, taking a thermos out of his pocket he took a swig from it and shuddered slightly, while he despised the flavor of orange juice usually, he knew that it was worth the discomfort in order to insure his quick recovery. Replacing the thermos in his cloak he looked around and sighed lightly, "Maybe I'm just impatient...Lerato is probably rubbing off on me.

Reikai hadn't planned on being this late but her overly helpful nature had gotten in the way while she had been making her way to the gates of the Gotei. Helping others was just something that she couldn't ignore. She breathed a sigh of relief when the entrance came into view and the small-framed shinigami quickened her steps when she caught sight of someone already standing there. She recognized him as the taichou of the ninth squad, and immediately her nervousness increased when it finally hit her how important this was... Shaking her head to clear all unnecessary thoughts away, Reikai approached the captain, a little out of breath, and bowed so low, any further her body might have done a full ninety degrees. "I apologize for my tardiness!" She said quickly. "My name is Ishimara Reikai. I'm here for the captaincy interview."

((Hello. I was instructed to take over the interview. I hope you don't mind. ^_^))

It was at that moment that another person stepped into the office behind Reikai. This shinigami didn't look a day over 25 and wore a strange black shihakshou that resembled that of a Shinto priest's robes. He had gotten a lot of strange looks from others as he made his way for the Gotai. He figured it was perhaps it was because he looked so confused; Glancing around as he did a crazy speed-walk. Unfortunately, it had been years since he had been in the Seireitei and thus had lost his way a couple times, causing him to be a little late as well. He was in such a rush that he didn't notice the small bowing girl and nearly tripped on her as he entered the room.

His blue eyes widening, he stopped himself in mid-step with his right foot just centimeter's away from Reikai's heels but his balance had already given way. With that, he fell forward but used the momentum to do an awkward twirl on the ball of his foot around Reikai until both feet were solid on the floor again. Now he was beside her. Crisis averted.

Giving a small wave to Zaine as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened, he stated, "Yo, I hear you're still not feeling well so I'm here to take over for you." His voice reflected that of a good-natured, calm and cheerful sort of person. "Get some rest. I'll drop by with some tea for you later."

He then turned his gaze to Reikai, whom he was much taller than, and flashed a warm smile. Although he was a little embarrassed for almost falling over her, he intended to hide that fact in spite of his pale young face being bit flushed around the edges- proof that he wasn't so great at pulling off the nonchalant act after all.

"You may call me Nagi. Let's go for a walk, shall we?"
he invited, raising his single left arm toward the door as a gesture for her to lead the way. "It's been a while since I've been in the Seireitei. I'd enjoy it if you showed me around if it's not too much trouble. We can talk while we walk."

Reikai had straightened, squeezing her eyes shut and holding herself as closely as possible when she felt a gust of wind blow past her. Only when it stopped did she open her eyes and focus on another shinigami that wasn't her supposed interviewer. He was now standing at her right side as if nothing had happened, but she was sure something did just now. But she had closed her eyes and didn't know what exactly that something was.

"Yo, I hear you're still not feeling well so I'm here to take over for you." So he was going to interview her? Reikai felt as if she could relax a little. He sounded like a nice person; and for some reason she felt almost as if he was her brother. She shook her head, dark brown curls smacking her in the face to wake her up. How silly could she get? Of course he wasn't Kenji, they weren't even remotely alike! She let her eyes shyly turn to the tall male, and then realized his attention had turned to her as well. Now that she was looking at him properly, she could see more details that helped her determine what kind of person her interviewer was. His blue eyes seemed to almost sparkle in a way that only friendly people could pull off, and his smile was warm and inviting; in no way was he intimidating, and Reikai almost let her guard down too far. But then she remembered that he wasn't here to befriend her, and it came right back up again.

"You may call me Nagi." He spoke first, and Reikai nodded, forcing herself not to let her eyes linger on Nagi's fluttering right sleeve for too long ('Does he have only one arm...?' She wondered.). Seeing as he had come when she had already introduced herself to Zaine, and Nagi had come after she had done so, she decided to do so again in case he hadn't heard her name. "My name is Ishimara Reikai. It's nice to meet you." She replied with a shy smile of her own, careful to be polite and not too casual. "Let's go for a walk, shall we? It's been a while since I've been in the Seireitei. I'd enjoy it if you showed me around if it's not too much trouble. We can talk while we walk." He gestured for her to lead the way and she bowed a little; not the low one she did earlier, but just a short, upper-body one. "Hai!"

Hoping she wasn't out of line, she turned to Nagi. "Um...If you don't mind me asking...Where did you go outside the Seireitei?" She asked, a little timidly. "I haven't been outside the Seireitei in such a long time...I was just wondering...how it is out there..." She scratched the side of her face, with a small, sheepish smile.

Grateful for her lack of “over” formality, Nagi wasn’t too bothered with her politeness but made him feel somewhat odd still. Perhaps it was because he was so used to Babba-san yelling at him every day. He wasn’t so used to being treated with respect anymore. He found Reikai to be a funny girl. Her expressions and behavior was an obvious sign that she was nervous, but determined at the same time. He felt this was a natural reaction from anyone who was preparing themselves to take a big step in their lives. It reminded him of the times he did… pretty much everything for the first time.

“I haven’t been in Soul Society at all to tell you the truth.” He replied, his cheerful expression blending with a bit of sadness. He paused for a moment, taking in the scenery around him. It was beginning to look familiar again. He often came by Ninth Division to check on his old friend but it was apparent that Fefnir was no longer there. He realized that many things had changed just by sensing the surrounding riatsu. “I’ve been on earth amongst the living. It’s beautiful there. The summers are hot and humid and the winters are cold and snowy. The people are always busy and some parts of the day they all move in one direction like a school of fish. The food is amazing too. Unfortunately, it’s no place for a shinigami to reside for very long.”

While he spoke, he searched his brain for any memory of the Rukongai, perhaps a slight description to give to her, but nothing came to him. It was too long ago. Instead, he directed his attention back to her.

”So, what division have you been assigned to currently?”
he inquired. "What do you think of it?"

“I haven’t been in Soul Society at all to tell you the truth.” Reikai listened eagerly as he described the living world. How she longed to return and see how her home had changed in the past years she had died. She had always entertained the fact that maybe she might even run into her brother during that time...that he probably hadn't died at all and was leading a perfectly normal life there. But she was too scared to find out if it was true as well. She was afraid she would get jealous and end up doing something that might hurt him. "Unfortunately, it’s no place for a shinigami to reside for very long.” Reikai nodded in agreement, although a little sadly. Still, she couldn't help but long to be able to see it again.

She waited a little to see if he could tell her anything else, but it seemed that their conversation on life outside the Seireitei stopped there. Reikai couldn't really recall most of her past from before she died anyways. The only clear thing she did remember was her missing brother. "Still, it sounds like a nice place to visit from time to time..." She replied, almost wistfully. But this wasn't the time to be remembering things like that. She mentally shook it off and returned to the conversation.

”So, what division have you been assigned to currently? What do you think of it?”

"I was assigned to the tenth division. It's a very friendly division." She smiled a little at the memory of her first years in the Seireitei. "Everyone is very optimistic and outgoing. Kokurongai-taichou is actually really, really kind, even though he doesn't usually act it." She still hadn't caught on that it was because she was still a girl, and Kokurongai Jakkuras, the tenth division captain, was more lenient with woman partially due to his belief of their stereotyped frailty. "I'm very grateful that they took me in...Or else I might have ended up in the fourth division." She smiled sheepishly. True, she had been completely useless back in the day, unseated and lacking a proper Shikai. So useless, she would've definitely ended up in Healing and Maintenance if it hadn't been for Kasen Tsuin, the tenth division third seat, who had toughened her up and taught Reikai how to master her Shikai. It had been too offense-based for the fourth division and so she ended up in the tenth division. The thought of her (maybe) soon to be former senpai made her flush a little. If she had enough guts to speak her opinions out loud, she would've said that Kasen deserved to be a captain too (or she was probably being biased because it was kind of obvious that she harbored a crush feeling of admiration and respect for him)...

Feeling the flow of emotion go from one thing to the next, Nagi smiled. It seemed as though his time away didn't at all diminish the ability like he assumed it would. He was slightly glad for it, but in a way not. People's feelings were their own business, not something to be spied on. Yet in this case, he felt it had a sense of purpose. As a former leader, he was always adamant for keeping his subordinate's moods in check, just in case they got in the way of their ability to focus. Would this girl's emotions eventually cause her to lose focus? Only time would tell.

The mentioning of an unfamiliar captain made his own heart sink a little too. So many of his old friends had moved on that he never bid farewell to. Then again, he had done the same thing as well. It was almost hard to believe how many years had gone by.

Instead of keeping his head in a rain cloud, he let out a small laugh at Reikai's comment about ending up in fourth division. He found it funny how so many often dreaded the idea of setting foot in there, member or not. Those who weren't members were usually there for an unfortunate reason. He was in there a lot. Just thinking about it also reminded him of Ona, another former captain and friend, who was quite stern in her healing and healthcare methods. She was almost scary.

"I'm sure there was a very good reason why you didn't go to fourth division other than the fact that it's kinda lousy." he said with a light hint of amusement in his tone. "Every shinigami is suited to a squad, even if they don't realize it at first. Those who aren't are often miserable and don't feel like they belong. Fortunately, it sounds like you ended up in the right one."

He caught himself for a moment, realizing that he was sounding like an old wise man. That or a babbling old geezer. The picture of himself with a long white beard looked somewhat funny in his head. He refrained from laughing at himself out loud for it. Certainly the girl would think he was crazy after a while. Oh well... he already knew he was kind of crazy. Why not let the rest of the world know?

He then asked, "So, in saying that you love your division very much, how do you feel about leaving it in order to fulfill your duties to another division as a commissioned officer?"
PostPosted: Mon Jan 23, 2012 3:53 am

"I'm sure there was a very good reason why you didn't go to the fourth division other than the fact that it's kinda lousy." At this Reikai started. She realized she had made it sound like the fourth division was a horrible place to be sent to. "A-ah, I didn't mean it like that!" She quickly corrected herself. "I only meant that I'm not really suited for healing and things like that. I think that the fourth division isn't all that bad, it's just not for me...I don't like the thought of being left behind when I know I can do something out there."

"Fortunately it sounds like you ended up in the right one." Reikai smiled. "Hai..." She believed she had been fortunate to have ended up in the tenth division like she did. She felt a little sad that she couldn't have applied for the tenth division captainy position, but she believed that the tenth division already had quite the capable captain already.

"So, in saying you love you division very much, how do you feel about leaving it in order to fulfill your duties to another division as a commissioned officer?"

Reikai smiled gently. "I would be lying if I said I didn't feel a little sad. However, if I've learned anything, it's that even in death, life goes on. Besides, it's not like I won't ever be able to see them again. My duties as a shinigami is to keep the balance between life and death as well as the extermination of Hollows. If having to transfer to another division allows me to be able to gain the strength necessary to do so, then I won't feel any regret. We're all working together anyways, right? I can still be able to fight by their side, even in a different division." She realized how serious she sounded and smiled a little to light the mood, not wanting to be too much like her brother. "I've been trained so that I can help others. Becoming a captain means I'll just have more responsibility to do so and it's the very least I can do after all everyone's done to help me grow stronger. That's why, it doesn't really matter to me, what division I'm in, as long as I'm able to be side by side with my comrades."

Simply nodding, Nagi felt a warm and fuzzy feeling when she spoke about her feelings of leaving her division. Her words radiated with utmost sincerity with no hints of regret or fear as if she were hiding any negative opinions- something that most being interviewed would do. They’d say what the interviewer would want to hear, yet it would always come back and bite them in the rear later. In this case, this was exactly what Nagi wanted to hear. Surely the nature of this girl would reflect upon the division she was chosen to lead and thus would be granted much joy in return. He himself had his moments where he was forced to hold back his negative side. Although cheerful most of the time, there was still that darkness within him that he never wished for his subordinates to see- much like his captain before him. Still, Nagi enjoyed being around his division members and like how determined and eager to learn they had always been. It was because of them that Nagi felt a sense of purpose in this new life. If anything, it gave him something worth reading all those books for. Knowledge was his power.

It was at this point when Nagi stopped when he noticed something. Just ahead of them was a narrow walkway that turned into a bridge going over a small stream that cut through the yard. The railway on the right side had been broken; almost as if someone had run something into it but didn’t bother to fix it. He strode up to it, frowning slightly in thought, then glanced back at Reikai.

“This is no good.” He said. “Surely somebody might not notice this and fall. Perhaps if we were to fix it, someone might not be so unfortunate.”

With that, he reached down with this left hand and removed a splinter of what looked like to be white wood from one of the fractured edges.
”You may already know,” he grinned, holding the small fragment out to her, ”That every structure here is made out of spiritron molecules. One with the ability may be able to manipulate them, much like the riatsu within ourselves. If you were confident in your ability to focus your riatsu, how do you think we should go about fixing this railing?”

Reikai breathed easier knowing that her ideas weren't wrong. She was paying close attention to her words, doing her best not to sound too eager, or too reluctant; neither of which would help her with her nerves the slightest. “This is no good.” Reikai blinked as she realized they had come to a stop by a small stream that had cut through the yard that ran close to the tenth division. “Surely somebody might not notice this and fall. Perhaps if we were to fix it, someone might not be so unfortunate.” Immediately, Reikai had the urge to fix it herself, but then wondered if she would be being too rude by doing so in the middle of her interview. Reikai decided it was and stood by politely as the navy-haired shinigami reached down to picked up a splinter. Maybe once the interview was over, she could do a double-back and come back to this spot...

”You may already know, that every structure here is made out of spiritron molecules.” Reikai glanced up at Nagi curiously, wondering where this conversation was going, and partially hoping it was what she thought it was. Reikai didn't know whether to call it being a perfectionist, or maybe she just had an OCD for seeing things neat and finished. "One with the ability may be able to manipulate them, much like the riatsu within ourselves." Reikai fidgeted with her fingers a little.

"If you were confident in your ability to focus your riatsu, how do you think we should go about fixing this railing?”

Reikai's eyes sparkled as she didn't even have to wait for Nagi to finish speaking before accepting the fragment from him. She wasted no time in pushing up the sleeves of her shihakushō from her forearms and dropping to a crouch so that she was face to face with the broken part of the railing. Sensing reiatsu and reiryoku was her specialty; and everything had a distinct reiatsu. She had yet to find two of the exact same of either. She frowned a little as she touched the railing. "Most of the original pieces have already gone downstream..." She murmured, only feeling faint traces of them left. "But I can still use the ones here." Freeing some of her reiryoku flow, which then turned into reiatsu, she felt for the pieces that were still within reach and, implementing a little of her own with the particles so they wouldn't be completely alien to control, proceeded to reconstruct the fracture, momentarily forgetting about her companion.

Luckily, the broken part was small, and as ever helpful as Reikai was, she wasn't confident in fixing anything bigger than a crack or a fissure. But it was a start; controlling reiatsu outside of her may not have been one of her stronger points, but she tried.

The fractured railing was no more by the time Reikai straightened again, letting the sleeves roll back to cover her wrists. She was blushing a little, realizing how strange she must have seemed, being so eager to help like that, as well as forgetting that Nagi was with her. "Please excuse me..." She smiled sheepishly. "I can't really help myself when I see things like that...It bothers me not to do anything about them..."

[ [ I hope I did this part correctly o.o ] ]

((Haha, I donno. Did you?))

From the first moment he spoke of it, Nagi knew the outcome before it even started. The look in Reikai's eyes pretty much blurted it out all. He let out a small laugh and backed off only to watch the girl go to work. Although he had said "how do you think we wold go about fixing this railing?" he already felt as though he had done his part by finding the break. There was no way she could have known that his ability to manipulate riatsu wasn't as good as it used to be. Reikai had taken the initiative and was the one who had gotten her hands dirty. Had Nagi been a captain, this would have been the correct way to go about it. Although he hated this order of things, the system worked out to the squad's benefit of not having their captain outdoing them and stepping on their feet all the time. There was a word for it- micromanageitous.

With that, he studied her fix on the railing. Although there were some missing pieces, she worked with what she had and the results were satisfactory. In all, he was pleased to see that her efforts weren't in vein. It almost made him disappointed that she hadn't been in his squad once-upon-a-time-ago. Her kido abilities would have been scary after a while. She almost reminded him of Suri, his lieutenant. He couldn't sense her anywhere either.

"No apologies needed." Nagi smiled, sensing that she often second guessed herself on matters like this. "If you felt that it had to be done, then it had to be done. However, once you're a captain, ensure that your division picks up the menial work like this. You'll have much bigger matters to worry about."

This was true to some extent. He recalled the tedious stacks of paperwork and the studying needed to keep up with his duties as a trainer. In this case, it wasn't his duty to give her advice but he couldn't help himself.

"It looks great. You did a wonderful job." he concluded while placing his hand on the railing to test its durability anyway. Had he not have noticed it before he would have broken through and fallen in the water with his horrible luck. If it held him up, then it was more than good. "Now then, shall we proceed? I think I know where I'm at but I haven't been over here too much in the past. Can you tell me where we are and what makes it stand out to you?"

"No apologies needed. If you felt that it had to be done, then it had to be done." Reikai smiled a little shyly. At least he didn't think she was strange...She could kind of tell from his tone. She wondered if Nagi had been a captain before... "However, once you're a captain, ensure that your division picks up the menial work like this. You'll have much bigger matters to worry about." Reikai nodded. "Hai. I understand." She had seen how much work Jakkuras-taichou usually had...especially the paperwork. She mentally grimaced as she remembered the stacks and stacks of them whenever she had to report to the tenth division captain.

But she had come this far and was willing to push on through with sheer determination if she had to.

"It looks great. You did a wonderful job." They had come back to the topic of the fixed railing, and Reikai blushed at the compliment. "Th-thank you..." She half-mumbled, not really used to getting compliments.

"Now then, shall we proceed? I think I know where I'm at but I haven't been over here too much in the past. Can you tell me where we are and what makes it stand out to you?"

Now that Reikai actually looked around her, she made a small sound of realization where they were. "This is the tenth division." She explained. "It's usually most noticeable by the surrounding forests...Most of it is the training grounds, and deeper in is, um...'God's Pubes'. It's a kind of...special...mobile...forest..." She really didn't know how else to describe it...It was kind of scary if you wandered in. You'd get lost forever, most likely, what with all the rearranging and regenerating plants..."And beyond the forest just over there is Crater Mountain, which is the special training grounds." She then turned her attention to the surrounding area. "Most of the area around the tenth division is a field, usually training area for anyone who doesn't want to risk God's Pubes or go as far as Crater Mountain." And where she had been seen usually. "Other than that, we just have normal barracks and buildings."

((Sorry it took so long. I had some things to take care of.))

Walking along and looking around, Nagi listened to Reikai’s description of her division. The name 'God's Pubes' made Nagi snort in attempt to hold in his inquisitive laughter. He found his own reaction to be somewhat immature but at the same time, he wasn’t expecting something like that to be said. Therefore, he was simply caught off guard, which was unfair. He recovered quickly though and continued to listen yet tentatively as if he were expecting other odd names to arise. The more she spoke of it, the more he wished he had been able to see the 10th division in the past yet by the sound of things it hadn’t changed that much. He found the air to be peaceful and serene- such a beautiful day certainly made it all the better. This made him glad that he was able to take the opportunity.

With that, his thoughts began to drift back to his former division- the pristine grounds, the training ranges, his old cluttered office loaded with books and the barracks room he rarely slept in... He would have liked to have seen it again but he somewhat worried of what his reaction might be. It wasn’t that he wouldn’t like the possible changes. Sure, it no longer belonged to him anymore but the memories he made there would have still remained. Exposing himself to it this early would have been a crazy idea.

“You have a beautiful division.” He said while gazing around as if he weren’t being taunted by other thoughts. “Your captain has certainly taken care of it. When you get your own area to look after, do you think it’ll be this nice?”

“You have a beautiful division.” Reikai beamed and nodded enthusiastically. She certainly agreed. Even though it was kind of plain with just a basic militaristic style, she found it quite nice, actually. Everything was natural; there were no strange buildings or elaborate gardens, but Reikai didn't mind.

“Your captain has certainly taken care of it. When you get your own area to look after, do you think it’ll be this nice?”

Reikai hummed thoughtfully. "Actually...I hope I can make it even better." She replied. "I don't want to just stick with what I've been given. I would want to make the division a place where anyone could feel comfortable in, and something that reflects the division as a whole." She clasped her hands together in front of her. "Nagi-san, if I may..." She played with her fingers a little. "What was your division...before going to Earth?" She wondered what the Seireitei was like during Nagi's time...

((sorry for the wait- tax season is upon me!))

Reikai’s response made Nagi smile. He had figured she’d say something like that, considering what he had already seen of her personality. To him, she seemed like a kind, thoughtful girl. Surely her division would amount to be something great if she kept it up. Shinigami were subjected to hatred and darkness often. They were always in need of a positive light with the strength to lead the way. It made him wish that he had done the same.

He paused as her last question met his ears.
“I was in the fifth division as one of its first captains.” He responded, attempting to rack his brain past all the weird memories to find the actual good ones. After a few seconds, all he could think of was Yuki. He continued to smile yet there was a tinge of sadness in his eyes. He felt it and looked away. “It was a wonderful place to me and the members were good people. I really enjoyed working with them.”

Everything had been so simple back then. Although everyone was constantly training, Nagi enjoyed maintaining and working his kido ranges. Sometimes it got the point of becoming stressful, but it was better than sitting in the office all day. The more he thought about it, the more disappointed in himself he became. His division had been perfect in his eyes. It was he, himself, that had been flawed. Nagi had yet to be exposed to current matters, but from what Yuki told him, it wasn’t what it used to be. From what he heard, the original gotai 13 had dissipated, much like he did. He had hoped it was for any reason other than death.

“I don’t know which division you plan on moving to, but no matter where you go you must promise yourself one thing-“
he said in a somewhat serious tone. His eyes flicked back to her. “Don’t lose faith in yourself or your subordinates. Keep moving forward and they will always follow.”

He then admitted, “I left because I was afraid of losing others and myself. I felt that a captain with fear in their heart had no right to lead others. But…” he then smiled warmly. “In feeling that way I underestimated those who truly cared, including my own division. I didn’t know that until just recently. I feel much better now since it's all in the past now.”

Although Reikai didn’t ask for details, he was unable to hold it in. At first, he didn’t see himself as a rightful example of what a captain should be- how one should compose themselves. However, he saw a different opportunity in all of this. He was the example of what NOT to do and he wasn’t at all afraid to subject himself to it.

Figuring the tenth division was a perfect place to drop her off, Nagi stated, “One last question for you, Reikai-san: Do you see yourself strong enough to proceed up the ranks? Can you handle the responsibility? Or are you going to become a twittery old git like me?” His last insult on himself actually made him laugh.
There was a saying he always abide to, no matter what the situation: He who learns to laugh at himself will never cease to be amused.
