Another evening, another plethora of students having nightmares. While her uncle would have been skilled enough to jump through and devour at least a dozen of these nightmares, Xiu was still extremely inexperienced in comparison. Though she had done a fair deal of training and practice in her time here at Amityville, her abilities were ones that required patience to fully develop.
The job of a Halloween citizen was to use their powers to frighten humans, not each other. Thus, with this in mind, Xiu tried to use her senses to determine which student was having the worst nightmare this evening, following the trail into their mind...
...And immediately flinching once she was in.
Things in here were looking...pretty bad. One of the worst nightmares she had ever seen, in fact. Though she didn't understand everything that was going on, she saw bits and pieces of events that she recalled all too clearly--the Hunters, the fire--and a shudder ran up her spine. Despite her instinct to get out of there, the baku forced herself to stay where she was, nervous gaze darting quickly over the scene. Her gaze fell on the dreamer, who was huddled in the middle of it all, arms over his head and eyes squeezed shut. They were muttering something under their breath, something that suspiciously sounded like, "Go away go away go away!"
Well, that's why she was here. Taking a deep breath, Xiu cupped her hands and held them out in front of her as her eyes slid closed. As she concentrated, the world around them flickered, and then began to spiral in towards the spot above the ghoul's hands, as if pulled in by a black hole. For a while, there was a strong wind as the black hole sucked everything up, and then...silence.
Opening her eyes to a blank white world, the baku plucked the black, pearl-like object from the air in front of her. With a little grimace, she held it up to her mouth, touching the nightmare to her lips.

Out of the now void whiteness there seemed to be one thing that remained. One thing that Xiu's power had not sucked up into the black pearl she now held delicately in her fingers. As the object drew closer to her mouth the dark figure approached, long legs closing the distance fairly quickly. "Hold it, hold it hold it!"
Like a snake Titus struck out with his hand plucking the small pearl from Xiu's fingers before she could push it passed her lips. With furrowed brows he looked the object over seeming almost offended. "What did....how did....what have you done?" He sounded displeased. "All my hard work and you cram it in a little ping pong ball."
Titus continued to roll the item around in his fingers studying it as if trying to crack a code. How the hell could he fix this? He had spent the better part of an hour trying to talk the poor schmuck into this setting. All his hard work and what did he have to show for it? A marble. "How do I fix this?" He seemed to be asking himself as he stared at the marble now ignoring Xiu as he tried to work out the problem in his mind.

Xiu flinched in shock as someone suddenly spoke up, snatching the nightmare pearl from her fingers. Pink eyes widening, she whirled around to face the figure. The only one who should be able to touch, or even see, her in this dream world was the dreamer themself, so why would they--
--"E...eh?" That was obviously not the dreamer. A quick look determined that the dreamer was still huddled in the middle of the void, shaking and oblivious to what had just occurred. Xiu looked back at Titus then, a frown tugging at her lips as she stared up at the boil. He wasn't supposed to be here--at least, not any more than she herself was supposed to be here.
Another student who deals with dreams or sleep, maybe? She considered this for a moment before her expression relaxed slightly. Well, it was always good to have another peer who dealt with the same element as she did, right? "Who are you?" There was a pause as she eyed the black pearl that he was focused so intently on, and she added, "What do you mean by your hard work?"

Titus could hear the ghoul muttering behind him but hadn't paid her any mind at first. He was still trying to figure out how to extract his nightmare from the tiny pearl she had created. "Maybe if I just add water...." That seemed logical enough and as if on cue a glass of liquid appeared in his hand.
That was, however, when Xiu finally got his attention. "This." Titus hissed turning toward her and holding up the pearl. "I spent the better part of an hour at work and you destroy it in seconds." As he stepped closer, white pupil-less eyes trained on her face his taller form looming over hers. "Fix this." It was every bit of a command and not a request.

"Hold on--you did this?" So this nightmare, it wasn't something that the student had dreamed up on their own, but something that had been urged along? No wonder it had been so much more fearsome than the usual ones! The petite ghoul flinched a little as the boil loomed over her, but she stayed where she was, staring up at him with an air of stubbornness (and perhaps a little fear) as she crossed her arms.
"Who are you?" She asked, repeating the question, "And as for that nightmare..." Xiu looked towards the pearl, and gave a little shake of her head.
"I'm sorry, but I can't 'fix it'. Not in the sense that you want me to fix it, at least." She held her hand out then, palm turned upwards as she stared up at the boil expectantly. "That being said, I'd like my meal back now, please." Even if it was going to be one of the most bitter nightmares she would have ever eaten--she could tell just by looking at it.

"Yeah, I did this, Powderpuff." Titus had been rather pleased with his work and then she had shown up. He was a little surprised she didn't move but he could see the hint of fear in her stern expression. Trying to play the brave one. It made his smile turn cruel as she continued, his gaze turning to her upturned hand.
"Titus," Was all he offered before he pulled back and plopped the pearl into the glass of water and waited. Nothing. He swirled the glass a little and the pearl went clanking against the sides with every turn. Nothing......well damn. Maybe if he tried to shake it up?
"Wait....wait...hold the skelephone. Meal?" He paused in his actions, gaze turning toward Xiu with furrowed brows. It was like his mind was finally piecing the puzzle together and he wasn't very pleased with his conclusion. "Dream Eater....." He scoffed a bit like that was the last thing he needed.

Powderpuff? ...Great, another grumpy boil who insisted on giving her a nickname. First Mac with "Mouse", and now this guy with "Powderpuff".
Sigh.
More importantly, though, was his nonchalant confession that he had been responsible for the nightmare. So he was some kind of...nightmare demon, perhaps?
"Titus," She repeated absently when he introduced herself, her attention focused on the nightmare pearl, "I'm Xiu." Under normal circumstances, she probably would have offered her hand to shake or bowed, but the baku was staring with mild amusement as Titus dropped the pearl into the water, as if expecting it to suddenly disperse back into the air and reform the scene. That, unfortunately, was not how her power worked.
When she turned to look at her, Xiu smiled (perhaps a little teasingly) and leaned forward to pluck the glass of water from his hands. "Right. A baku, to be more specific." Without waiting for a reply, she lifted the glass to her lips and tilted her head back, letting the water wash the nightmare pearl into her mouth. Once it was down, she immediately began to cough, her free hand held over her mouth in disgust.
That had tasted absolutely disgusting, which was a testament of just how bad that nightmare had been. Turning back to Titus, she held the empty water glass back out to him. "What are you thinking, planting such a nightmare in a fellow student's dream like that?"

"Oi!" Titus grumbled as Xiu managed to grab the glass from his hand. He sneered rather irritated as she explained specifically what she was. "Yeah, sure, baku. A dream eater is a dream eater." They were all the same to him. Basically a pest, breaking into his dream and....and... "Hey hey hey," He was too late to stop her as she down the water and the pearl before handing him back the empty glass.

Was she seriously handing him the empty glass back? On reflex he took it before immediately tossing it behind his shoulder at least comforted by the loud shattering noise it made as it hit...whatever in this white blank space. The look of dissatisfaction on her face was also something but it still left him irked.
"I was thinking I was working and now I need to start all over. So if you wouldn't mind shoving off," He tried to shoo her along with a slight flicking motion of his hand before he made his way back over to the dreamer still huddled on the floor. There he casually crouched beside the student with a sigh, placing an arm over the victim's shoulder. "You better hurry mate, I think their coming."
A figure began to form in the white though they were mostly white themselves. Or at least their coat was. Titus had seen several of these Hunters so far and the designs on their coats always seemed to vary as well as their weapon. The closer the figure came to them the more vivid and tangible it became. It wasn't long before the whip came into view, the weapon spiraling around the Hunter like a live snake with a mind of its own.

Start over? Oh, no. Ooooh, no. The baku puffed out her cheeks as she trotted after Titus, falling to her knees beside the poor dreamer and resting a protective arm over their shoulder (while trying to push away Titus'). Her words were directed towards the nightmare demon when she spoke again. "I can understand needing to practice your powers...but you didn't get permission to do so with this person, did you?"
Okay, so she hadn't either when she had first started out, but she had learned from her mistakes! Furthermore, when it came to a simple case of devouring a dream like this, it was a quick jump-in-jump-out. But planting a nightmare in another student's dream? That was just dirty, and--
--Xiu froze up as a figure began to form in the emptiness before them. Her tail bristled as she got to her feet, gaze fixated on the materializing Hunter. "That's not something you should be joking about," She murmured, her quiet voice tight, "You've never met a Hunter, have you?"
It wasn't worth exerting the effort to devour the dream--not when there was only a single, half-formed Hunter--so if she wanted to get rid of it, she would have to do so by trying to force it away. Which meant...a power struggle between herself and Titus? U-ugh. Their surroundings flickered slightly as she focused on the Hunter character.

Titus smiled a smile that threatened to split his face in two as he looked at the little baku. His expression was somewhat like how a child would regard a puppy shortly before punting it off into the distance with glee. "I'm sorry what was that about permission? Did you get invited here?" Titus leaned on the dreamer like they were merely a piece of furniture for his use.
"No one wants to have the pants scared off them in their sleep, little dream eater. Besides, its a whole other matter when you know its coming. Often you can't sleep or you try to fight it. Its much more realistic this way and the poor sap will be none the wiser." He patted the dreamer on the head briskly after what he considered sound logic. "If that's not enough of a reason then how about Je m'en fou."
When Xiu turned to look at the Hunter Titus stayed right where he was. "Eh? I've seen plenty of them in these dreams. All a little different but the same. Their image seems to work the best, driving fear in deep." With an oddly gentle touch, Titus reached down with his hand to lift the dreamers head and turned them to look in the direction of the Hunter he had created. No doubt if they spotted them there would be more. It was during this act that he felt a pull against his power that didn't belong to the dreamer. Once again the baku was trying to ruin his plans.
With a growl he stood to his full height, tattered wings flaring out like smoky waves of black fire at his back. "You just want to continue to get in the way don't you, Powderpuff?" There looked to be malicious intent in his eyes, he wasn't about to lose this fight.

Wow, this guy was...
She tilted her chin up, trying to stand as straight as possible as she stared up directly into Titus' eyes. "I think it's one thing to do something quick to help someone, and another to use them as a personal guinea pig." So no, she wasn't invited here...but in the baku's mind, there was still a huge rift between what she was doing and what Titus was doing. The only solution would be for both of them to get out, and she was generally fine with this idea, but something told her that the nightmare demon would not be so complacent.
"Of course no one likes being scared, but more students would be willing to volunteer than you think." She argued, clearly unwilling to let the matter go, "Besides, so long as permission is granted, I...have a way that may help keep the dreamer sleeping." And by "a way", she meant a stronger dose of that tea that she usually made, but it wasn't a detail she was going to share if Titus wasn't going to cooperate.
Which it seemed like he wasn't. She wasn't sure what he had said, but it didn't sound like anything she would like.
The casual nature with which he spoke of the hunters made her bristle. Maybe she was just a little touchy considering what had happened, but she wasn't very appreciative of the fact that he could dismiss someone's fears--especially such a legitimate fear--and play with it. "You don't know anything about the Hunters, do you?" Xiu's voice grew slightly louder, and there was a sharper tone to it now. "And you're right, I'm not going to sit around and do this to people. Not like this, at least."

A chuckle rose in his throat, a creepy sound that seemed to echo through the void. "Life is full of guinea pigs just waiting for their moment of use to shine. He should be so lucky that I have chosen him to help further my own abilities." Full of himself much? Nah, not at all.
His smile only grew when she made an attempt to be helpful. "Oh, is the little dream eater offering some assistance to the cause?" How amusing. "So noble...so cute." His expression darkened almost dangerously. "I don't do cute."
He moved a little closer, chains starting to break their way from the floor circling around Xiu's feet like snakes. "I know enough." Titus hissed the Hunter he had created moving toward the dreamer now, his whip flailing and slicing through the air with ease. "And I'm afraid you are asking a bit much don't you think? You're asking me to fight my nature. I am a Nightmare Demon. It's my life to create nightmares, to who is no concern of mine."
One of the chains at Xiu's feet started to slither toward her shoe with the intent of binding her legs. It lashed out quickly though the noise was unmistakable.

He wasn't going to cooperate despite her help, so what could she do? It would nag on her conscience if she left and let him do as he pleased, and this person certainly didn't deserve to relive all these horrors. There was a moment of hesitation, and then she reached out, fingers wrapping tightly around Titus' wrist.
"Fair warning: I know it's your nature--it's also my nature to eat dreams. If you keep planting them, I'll be right after you to get rid of them--"
Her eyes widening in alarm and she jerked her back, her instinct telling her that something was wrong. A quick glance down determined that Titus had been trying to bind her legs, and--ugh. Though she dodged out of the way, the chain whipped into the side of her leg. Pursing her lips, Xiu swung her leg up in retaliation. Her intention had simply been to drive Titus back and break his concentration...
...But she ended up kneeing him in a much more sensitive spot.

Titus growled slightly, a somewhat feral sound bubbling up in his throat. "Then bon appetit. I'll make sure their worth eating." He had seen the look of disgust on her face, she didn't like to eat them. In that case he would make them as unpleasant as possible.
The demon started to smile seeing the widening of her eyes. For a moment he thought he had her but that wasn't the case when he was suddenly met with a knee to the groin. "Ooof," While it was still dreamspace pain was no foreigner here. He doubled over quickly, white and black eyes wide. The panic the pain induced had his wings flaring out the black shadowing bits wavering in a frenzy. It actually started to spread out from his form, leaking into the white void that surrounded them like ink pouring from a bottle. It began to bubble up as it hit the floor, the sounds of screams echoing as if trapped in the black.

Xiu's hands flew over her mouth--oh Jack, she hadn't meant to do that! Mot and Shun had told her that being kicked there hurt like hell, so she had always intended in reserving for a real enemy, and not a classmate.
Even if this classmate was an, er...well, a**.
She crouched down beside him, raising a hand to tentatively rest it on his shoulder. "I-I'm sorry! Are you..." Her grip tightened slightly as she stared warily at the substance leaking onto the ground. She had never seen anything like this before, and with her free hand, she found herself reaching out towards it. "Titus, what in Halloween is--?"
...You couldn't be seriously hurt in a dream, could you? At least, Xiu had never been--she usually woke up before she had a chance to "die"--but she wasn't sure if that was true of all dream or nightmare creatures.
