Location: Trine

The investigation has uncovered a great many rumors but not very much fact in its initial stages and wisdom has brought those intent on uncovering the truth behind the assassin to the Mess Hall. What better place to start then where the weyrfolk gather to talk and rest while they eat?

The hall is relatively empty when the group arrives, with the cooks busy in the back preparing the next round of food for evening meals. A youth sits sleeping by the fire at one end, a thin blanket draped over his shoulders, a pair of riders stand near the food conversing but their rough-and-tumble body language is a warning to keep your distance.

At one of the single tables near the hearth, a man sits nursing a steaming cup of klah regarding the sleeping youth with a sour expression. The knots on his shoulder denote him as a Brownrider. When he catches you gazing at him, he takes a deep sip of the klah and lets it clink as he sets it back down with a soft laugh, "What? Staring's not the most polite y'know!"

Investigation Week 1

  • Only the NPC described in the last (third) paragraph may be interviewed.
  • This is an ORP that will be lead by Staff - staff will be posting responses based on the posts received once or twice a day, each character can post as they want but the NPC response will not wait for all to post before answering.
  • Feel free to ask whatever questions that your character would ask!
  • Remember that this is an investigation about the Mystery Man who assassinated two ranking Riders and tried to kill a third.
  • A Hint: Look for relations between rumors and things said but remember not everyone knows the truth! Think about the answers you receive!

Cetalese stepped into the mess hall just ahead of Eliza, turning to glance back at her friend before she surveyed the meager few populating it at this odd hour of the afternoon. She and Eliza were clearly the first to arrive from the investigative group, but Ceta was ready to begin working, even if not everyone had arrived. It might be smarter to have more people around, though, in case one of the others thought of a question she did not.

Halith, please see if Z'iv is almost here? Their group of 5 had agreed to start at the Mess Hall and work their way on from there, looking for knowledgeable riders and other such weyrfolk who might be able to assist them with Trine's part of the investigation. There were other groups, of course, and even some individuals hell bent on figuring out who the murderer had been and where he had come from, but Ceta was only really concerned with those who had been mingled with her, most of whom were yearmates from the Epsilon Clutch.

Zetath, is Yours coming? Mine and Velath's are already looking for people who might know something. She wonders if Yours is on his way, Halith bespoke for her rider. She lounged on one of the warm lakeside beaches with Velath, enjoying the feeling of the sun on her hide while Hers investigated. Soon she would feel the need to get rid of some energy, but... not just yet. When the talking got boring, then she would see if Velath wanted to do something else.

Cetalese, meanwhile, was turning over the information she had overheard in the last few days leading up to the group assignments and the real beginning of the investigation the weyrleaders had all decided on. The one that kept niggling at her was a suggestion made entirely off the cuff by a healer she had been talking to. 'Seems like a man who could get into three different Weyrs to kill people wouldn't make the mistake of dropping an item that showed his allegiance, let alone items showing different Weyr allegiances,' the woman had said. That fact had been bothering Ceta as well, and hearing it from someone else's lips had only made it more obvious. The items on the body, the healer had gone on to say, were most likely dropped to mislead those who found them. Ceta agreed, but it was only a theory. None of this could be proven.

But that's what this is going to be. A game of rumors and suspicions. No one knows for sure, that's the problem with it all.

Eliza had been pondering just how to go about figuring this all out for quite some time - and when it had been suggested the Mess hall would be a good place to start she had whole heartedly agreed - I mean everyone came to the Mess hall at some point during the day right? It was like the central gathering place of the Weyr, if there was anything to know then this was the place to find it.

Of course maybe they had chosen a rather bad time since peeking over Ceta's shoulder when they arrived she frowned at the low numbers, someone sleeping by the hearth - probably shirking chores, a couple of cranky riders arguing over someone and a defensive seeming brownrider who was glaring at them over a cup of Klah.

"Sorry" she told the rider quickly "Was just seeing who was here" She told the man - though at the moment he seemed like the best person to talk to, or rather the only option they had. "He seems cranky" She whispered into Ceta's ear "Lets wait for the others less he decide to assign up chores or something if we bug him, less chance of that happening in a group you know?" She added on - unknowning that Ceta had already taken steps to see where the other's were.

Velath agreed with this deduction 'power in numbers' She told her's before turning her attention back to Halith. 'Do you think our's will learn anything interesting?' The green questioned her fellow dragon 'I bet they will..I bet they will figure it out before anyone else!'

Zetath replied in disapproving tones. There was much to do, and yet his rider sauntered! It really was infuriating.

Z'iv grinned as he stepped into the mess hall. "Alright there sweetheart?" he asked, gliding over to Cetalese with his lazy relaxed grin still in place. "Zetath was giving me quite the talking to for being so slow, and yet I seem to be the second one here! Maybe he's doing good for my timekeeping after all, hu?" This was a serious matter. He was aware of that. The whispers he picked up while lounging around looking lazy were useless for the most part but some of it... some of it was a bit worrying. He really didn't want his nice life turned upsidedown thanks so much, no he did not!

"Think the others will be along soon?" he asked after a moment. "T'rel's probably chasing Lunath around somewhere, but I wonder where that older rider we're meant to be hooking up with is? S'agi or something, wasn't it?"

Cetalese nodded at Eliza's assumption. The Brownrider had laughed, but he still didn't seem very friendly. Yet, of all those here, he was the only one who wasn't sleeping or paired off with someone. Those who were alone were usually the easiest targets.

Of course they will. They will have us helping them along. Halith stretched out her wings and let them flop open to get fully warm as well. She turned her blue, whirling gaze to Velath. And you always know what's going on anyway. I think we will know more than any other group from the beginning!

"I'm fine," she replied calmly as Z'iv walked up. Z'iv always had that almost haughty manner about him, but Cetalese usually didn't let it get to her. "It was S'kagi. Eliza and I were just looking over those here. I'm sure the others will be here soon."

Halith?

Yes, mine, I will ask Lunath where she and hers are. Lunaaaath! Mine is wondering if Yours is on the way to the mess hall to meet up with the others. Since Halith had not bothered to switch to full dragon-speech, Ceta heard every word of the inquiry.

The Bluerider made his way into the mess hall, ready to wait for the rest of his group. He knew they weren't there already thanks to Neptanth looking/asking about them all. For being the type to sit back and watch, S'kiro heard saw things that others wouldn't pay any attention to. There seemed to be others already in the hall, including the Brownrider. It wasn't strange to have so many about, but the way he watched the youth was different.

The laugh let on that S'kiro had been seen. "No need to be rude, sir. I was just trying to place which dragon was yours." He turned and grabbed some food before something else was said, that might not be polite either.

"I hope the sound of my name being tossed around doesn't mean I've become a suspect."

S'kagi was only half joking with the comment, since it seemed at this point almost everyone could have been the killer. His half smile was slightly grim as he walked toward the others, taking them in and perhaps summoning up memories of seeing them around the Weyr, or at the hatching in which they'd impressed.

The adult Crimson rider definitely had his own memorable traits, with his black hair only partially hiding the scarred side of his face.

"There are enough rumors and distrust flying around without starting to distrust each other without solid proof..." He trailed off at this statement, not yet willing to share whatever train of thought had triggered the statement.

You should tell them...
... I will... just not right here. Not yet. We can't jump to conclusions either, when it might have been nothing.

You are almost late, Mine! Hurry or you will miss something!

Set'al's only reply to his insistent dragon was a dismissive grunt. Almost late wasn't late, and he probably wasn't going to miss anything, and even if he did, he could always get someone to catch him up when he got there. He wasn't going to go running through the Weyr just because Pipith was worried he'd be late to this investigative meeting. He was grateful they were long past their Weyrling days, when Pipith had gone everywhere with him - now all he could do was talk at him, and Set'al could ignore him if he wanted to.

By the time the long-legged bronzerider entered the Mess Hall, several others were already there, although they didn't look to be in serious discussions yet. Four Senior Weylings and a crimsonrider, so there were still a few others who hadn't arrived yet. See, Pip? I'm not even the last one here.

If you'd gone any slower, you would have been.

"Nn, hey everybody," he offered as he thumped down onto a bench, the greeting friendly enough despite its informality.

Optheli had found it difficult to sooth her dragon long enough to leave for any length of time since she'd discovered that letter. Ironic that she should find it for offering to fill in for a sick drudge. Dynith had been so worried about her rider leaving her that she'd actually insisted Ismay accompany her. Not that she could blame the dragon. The contents had worried her too. Optheli had welcomed the flit on her shoulder as she strolled into the mess hall.

She could feel her dragon in close mental contact, watching everything through her eyes, even though the green was just outside. It's alright Dynith. Cheerfully she greeted the others in the hall, though a hint of worried shown in her eyes. The mess hall was a likely place to gather information. Optheli gave a smile to the brownrider with his cup of klah. "Sorry, I didn't recognize you. I'm trying to meet everyone in the Weyr. Optheli of green Dynith." She introduced herself.

Her step was light and fairly quick as she walked through the halls, a slight hint of wariness accenting her pace. There was an unfamiliar weight against her hip now, where she'd been given a small dagger to carry around. As a precaution. Or something. Narisa tried not to think too hard on 'why'.

She was in route to the mess hall, where she was supposed to meet with those in her assigned group. Narisa had recognized some of the names, but not all. That was not the cause for her wariness. No. It was why they were meeting in the first place. To investigate. That and she had to leave Cepheith's side. Something the gold was not very happy about. But there was no way she was going to join her rider in the mess hall!

I'm sure if I tried really hard or rearranged a few things I could fit. Cepheith grumped, having chosen to settle herself somewhere more accommodating for dragons. Her blue gaze, slightly peppered with a wary yellow, took in the other dragons lurking about. She nodded her head to a few, offered greetings to others.

<Dream all you want, golden love. There is no way you would fit in here without causing damage.> Narisa felt her lips twitch slightly, but not much. Shards, the sooner she was at the mess hall. The better. And finally, she was there, entering at her quick pace only to slow and make a sweep of who all was here so far. There were those who were here for meals, some poor souls catching a few extra moments of shut eye, and there! A familiar face. And someone in her group!

"Hey, Set'al!" Narisa moved towards the bronzerider, feeling a part of her relax a little. "I haven't missed much, have I?" There didn't seem to be many others about at the moment. Though, looking at the others gathered, she saw a few more people she knew. Like the crimsonrider, S'kagi. She offered him a smile as well as her fellow weyrlings. Oh and that was Optheli right there! Narisa gave the other rider a warm smile.

N'var slipped into the mess hall, his eyes darting around for anything glaringly suspicious before he moved further inside to make room for his sister to join him. It was a reaction based solely in brotherly worry he rationalized. Although he knew that he wasn't alone in his paranoia. Most everyone else was feeling it too. The mere fact that something like this had actually happened was enough to rock everyone to the very core. With a comforting smile he dropped a hand onto Kytara's shoulder as she joined him inside the door, all the while looking around for the other members of his little team.

The siblings had decided to split up in order to widen the net of information they might find, on the agreement that whatever they discovered would be shared with each other when they met up at night. Finally his eyes fell on Set'al and Narisa and he smiled across the room as a sort of greeting. He turned and leaned down a bit to meet the eyes of his sister, seriousness written in his face, marring the usually cheerful attractiveness he possessed. "Listen carefully okay. I want you to be careful. I know that you like to see the best in everyone, but be wary. Promise me?" He could hear an amused snort from Novath and waved it away. You are like a clutching gold with her N'varmine. She's my sister Novath. The most important thing to me next to you. And I expect you to look after her as well. Got it? Hmph....if I must... He rolled his eyes but smiled. The older the blue got, the grumpier he grew.

Kytara nodded at him. "I promise. Besides, I have Tetheus with me." She patted the little black who lay draped around her neck. She shifted her weight to her other foot and looked past him. "Optheli is here. So I won't be alone. You can join your group if you like. I won't be alone." With a playful smile she gave him a little shove and walked over to join Optheli. "Did I miss anything?"

Certain that she would be fine he watched her until she was at Optheli's side before joining his group.

Mine, Cepheith's is on her way in. The anxious green informed her rider as she watched the woman in question walk by her. Hers would be happy to see the goldrider. She turned her head toward the gold, but didn't speak to her. Cepheith looked worried too!

Thanks love. Optheli sent feelings of love to the green. She waved energetically to Narisa. They might not be in the same group, but she was glad her friend was there. The others could help keep her safe.

More people showed up. When Kytara joined her, Optheli gave her a grin then shook her head. "Hi Kytara. Nope, don't think we've started yet. How've you been?"
Ismay peered at Kytara from her owner's shoulder and trilled a greeting.

The brownrider snorted and waved a hand dismissively at their apologies. "It's B'ol," he said once he'd had another sip of klah, "B'ol of Phaenoth. As for you crimson rider..." he fixed S'kagi with a hard stare for a moment before chuckling to himself and shaking his head. "No no, I for one wouldn't think for a moment it was you. Don't think for a moment anyone of ours would do such a thing."

Cetalese glanced up when S'kagi walked in, but after a moment of studying him, she smiled slightly. "Hello, Crimsonrider. We were just discussing who else we were waiting on. I'm Cetalese, of Green--"

She turned as N'var came in and had a short exchange with the Brownrider who had unsettled her and Eliza when they walked in. She hadn't met the Brownrider before, but he seemed less harsh than he had first appeared. She nodded to him politely, her expression one of thoughtful interest.

"Who would you think did it, then? If I may ask." It couldn't hurt to start right in if the man left them an opening. Eliza would likely be bursting with questions soon enough as it was.

"B'ol then." S'kagi noted, filing away the names for future reference. "S'kagi of Luvith." And Cetalise of Green... something. He'd have to check afterward if he couldn't summon up the name. The problem was that he was never -entirely- sure he wasn't confusing one green dragon with another. They were a fast and essential part of any wing, but they were also the most numerous color... which wouldn't make him feel any less the fool if he accidentally matched her to the wrong partner in conversation.

He was tempted to shrink under the hard stare, reflexively wanting to attribute it to his scarred face from habit, resulting in a mental nudge from Luvith, raising his eyes back from their drift to his feet to return the intense look.

"...I wish I was as confident as you were." He admitted. He had only the vaguest ideas why anyone would have committed these murders, let alone a dragon rider... but..."

He paused for a second, glancing to the others in the group he was with, and then to the familiar young goldrider as he assembled a way to phrase the question.

"I remember someone saying there was a rumor that a strange blue had been spotted around Malvren. Did that ever turn up anything? If nothing else I'm sure everyone would feel better if we were able to dismiss the possibility of a riders involvement."
