C'rci over the past seven day or so of becoming a rider had found that she was beginning to spend more and more time around the lake just above Malvren Weyr. Whether it was her chattering ever friendly blue who dragged her up there to socialize with other dragons or just her own determination to keep Bolth's hide gleaming so bright you could blind a gold the young woman typically found herself resting on the grass a ways from the lakes edge. her journal which had once been packed full of wher drawings was now growing in number of carefully penned notes on dragons and flits and sketches of the wonderful winged creatures.
Why even now, after finishing their usual laps the pair sat on the grass. C'rci was rather hidebound on making sure Bolth was in fine shape as well as herself. True they had work outs and chore routines to keep them strong, but if there was one thing Bolth's rider was it was competitive. For all her calm steady nature C'rci was born with an extremely stubborn and determined drive and strove to give her rather skittish blue every tool possible to see him doing well come Weyrling lessons.
Said blue was currently resting his big steely head in her lap getting his eyeridges scratched with one hand as his rider carefully went over the details of his face with an oiling cloth in the other.
Mine. Do you want badly to fly? You don't gaze or sigh at the sky like some of the other flightless ones, but you often stare at the stars? What do you think of Mine when you stare at them? Bolth asked cracking one eyelid open his eyes whirling a content blue and green though a little flicker of yellow filled them as he worried over his rider.
I do want to fly Bolth, but not for the sentimental thrill. Though it will truly be glorious when we take to the sky together one day soon my heart. I stare at the sky because I am watching the stars, one star to be exact. She replied and she felt Bolth's hide shiver under her hand in apprehension.
You mustn't go there Mine! Thread will flay both our hides and I cannot bare to lose you! We are one Mine. Why must you yearn to fly thread? You don't even have wings to be clipped by the writhing gray yet you feel the deep set urge to take to the skies. And his eyes whirled wide with orange and yellow as the blue tried to get too his feet only to still as he felt the calming pressure of his riders hand.
"Easy Bolth." She crooned too him purring low in her throat as she stroked his beautiful hide wondering at her magnificent partner. "You know I'll protect you. Even from thread." C'rci replied with a gentle smile, but the hard edge of determination never left her golden eyes. To Bolth she was his champion, his knight in shining armor, his protector. From the moment the wherhandler apprentice had put her hands on his shell the blue had known in her he had found his other half and in him hers.
But for all the blue and rider thrived in their close bond, growing closer every day worry lurked in the back of Bolth's mind. It was easily forgotten at such a young age and just as easily soothed now as his worry over thread yet the thought was there.
He was supposed to protect her.
Then with a few good eyeridge scratches the fear was gone and Bolth crooned up to his rider. Mine is brave. His confidence in her absolute. Then spotting a much larger figure in the distance the weyrling lifted it's head to bugle a greeting to the newcomer making C'rci drop her journal as she covered her ears startled by the sudden loud sound.
"Bolth!" She called out firmly, her tone just loud enough to get her dragons attention without yelling. She'd never stoop to yelling if she could avoid it.
Sorry Mine! Oh! Is that a brown! Look how big he is Mine! Will I be that big one day? Bolth asked making his rider chuckle as the pair got to their feet, the little blue galloping over at a high rate of speed, his tired muscles forgotten, towards the newcomer.
Maybe one day if we keep up our practice. C'rci thought back smiling at her lifepartners antics.

It wasn't an uncommon site to find the brown rider either near the lake or down on the beach. Water was his second love, after Krith of course, and he was enjoying a lovely swim, his dragon lounging on the warm ground nearby.
Krith wasn't as fond of the water as his rider was, unlike some dragons, but he had no objection to spending time out in the sun. It was generally quiet as well.
A bugling caught the brown's attention, and he bugled a greeting back. We are about to have company. The brown dragon stated. It is still a hatchling.
F'nell chuckled. "Everyone starts as a hatchling." It must be one of the ones that had impressed at the latest hatching, and since Krith hadn't exactly been forthcoming with details, he rejoined the dragon back on land. Where there was a dragon, there was a rider, and it was probably not a bad idea for him to get to know some of the new riders no matter what color.
Hello, small one.Krith's eyes whirled in amusement as the little blue ran towards him eagerly. It had been a while since he had been as young as that, and the hatchling's enthusiasm amused him. What is your name?
Bolth would probably never be one of the fastest blue's in the air in the Weyr, but if there was one thing to be said for the hatchling it was that on land the little dragon was greased lightning. Ever since his speedy gallop at the hatching C'rci had had a hard time keeping her enthusiastic and optimistic partner still for any short period of time. Giving the extra training another upside of tiring the blue out since even with her insistence Bolth had continued to come sneaking into his riders bed and she'd yet to have the heart to kick the shivering little bundle of hide out of it.
Unfortunately where Bolth was fast he had not quite grasped the concept that mass travelling at a high speed in one direction using force to push itself forward takes an equal amount of force to cease said movement. In such the blue sometimes, not always, but sometimes had trouble stopping.
"BRAKE BOLTH!!!!! BRAKE!!!!!!!" C'rci called out throwing her voice in a loud booming tone that was rather surprising coming from such a small frame as the red haired girl currently running full out after her dragon.
A dragon then seeing his mistake was trying to dig his claws in only to tumble tail over snout and roll right into the browns side in a tangle of limbs on his back. Quirking his head up at the brown the hatchling chirruped a much more tame greeting this time.
Greetings. You are very large. I am called Bolth, the pretty, wonderful, flightless one running over here is Mine. She's called C'rci, but I call her Mine. She's wonderful. He answered rapidly, practically bubbling with excitement and happiness and a fresh bout of love everytime he mentioned his rider in his excitement all the while staring up a Krith in complete awe.
Dashing over to her own dragon C'rci gasped out eyes wide with worry as she fell to her knees beside Bolth quickly untangling the dragon and helping her partner right himself. Seeing that other then a good smear of dirt that Bolth was unhurt C'rci sighed seeming to settle back into her usual calm self as she glanced up at the brown.
"I'm so sorry about that." She apologized ducking her head in a small bow to the dragon her tone firm, but somewhat embarrassed. Bolth though didn't seem the least bit sorry and instead suddenly noticing his rider began to promptly try to merge himself with her legs crooning a happy greeting up at his.
There you are Mine! I got all mixed up again! I knew you'd come righten me. The blue chirruped with absolute confidence and not even the least bit disheartened by his riders sigh.
Try not to do that again Bolth. You had me worried. C'rci replied with a firm reprimand as she looked down at her partner who now stared up at her attentively if not somewhat ashamed at making her worry. Then just as soon as the solemn look had come over the young woman's face it left, like a cloud passing over a still mountain lake and a smile twitched across her lips as she reached out to scratch Bolth's eye ridges.
Sorry Mine.
Already forgiven. Was all C'rci thought her chest swelling with love for her handsome dragon even as the words left her mind.
On the other hand as she bowed once more to the brown and began looking around for his rider a pair of whirling orange and red eyes peered from the shadows of C'rci's hair. The occupant sleeping perfectly camouflaged amongst the tresses having been awoken by it's owners sudden dash.

Krith hadn't expected the small one to crash into him, though once he had, he supposed it had been inevitable. Are you alright, young Bolth? He chuckled at the small one's introduction. And you are rather small. I am Krith, and mine is called F'nell.
"You're going to have your hands full with that one," F'nell said, coming from behind his dragon, and grinning at the young rider. She was even smaller than him, an unusual experience for him. Normally the people that he knew were either as tall as him, or much taller.
He chuckled at the little dragon, smiling fondly. Krith hadn't been like that, though some of his clutchmates had, tripping over their own feet and tails. Most of them did outgrow it, eventually, and he was sure the little blue would too.
Her name is C'rci, and the little blue is Bolth. Tell her that it is alright. He did not mean to crash into me.
"Is he alright, C'rci?" F'nell asked, watching the girl check the dragon over. He didn't think the little one was hurt, his rider would be more concerned if he was, but it was the polite thing to do, to inquire about the young dragon's health. "And Krith says that it's alright." He wasn't the most chatty of dragons, and F'nell had been surprised to see that he was willingly talking to the blue. Forwarding comments through F'nell was far more Krith's style.
Bolth, distracted from his rider by Krith spread his little wings in an attempt to look bigger for a moment puffing up his chest with pride. I am all right big Krith. Mine is very adept at rightening me every time I get all mixed up. It is good to meet both you and your flightless one F'nell. The blue replied bobbing his own steel blue head in a dragon version of a bow in greeting.
"He means well. Really he does." C'rci replied spotting the older rider as he stepped around his brown to meet her, the younger rider spinning to face him. The girl was indeed a little under a head shorter then F'nell with fair skin that was just beginning to show a light tan and a petite, but well muscled physique. A rather delicate, but proud face with a pair of bright hazel gold eyes peered up at him framed with a wild mane of rich red hair. "Why I'd bet you a bubbly pie you'd be hard pressed to find a sweeter, more generous and hard working dragon then my Bolth here." She replied with staunch confidence in her lifebond pausing to smile warmly down at the blue as the other rider had done. What C'rci lacked in size though she made up with an air of sureness about her. A sense of steady determination hung about the girl. Adding in strength and attitude what she lacked in inches.
The big brown is Krith Mine. His rider's name is F'nell, he seems nice Mine. He's smiling at me. Bolth informed her trotting a step forward to rise on his haunches resting his front feet against F'nell's knees and peering up at him just like his rider.
"No harm done that a wash cloth and a bit of oil can't fix. Though I'll probably see about getting a little numbweed to dab on the spots where he's roughed up his hide a little just to be on the safe side." She answered grinning at her blue's friendly examination and chuckling softly.
He looks nice Mine Bolth crooned back to his rider twisting his head to look at her before turning back to look at F'nell pulling away to trot over to Krith to continue chattering to the brown.
"Well good to hear. We haven't quite perfected quick stops yet." C'rci replied turning to give another polite bow to the brown. "Thank you Krith and it's lovely to meet you." She continued deciding to let Bolth have his fun for the moment so long as he didn't bother the brown too much.
"It's also nice to meet you too F'nell." She spoke offering a firm hand and a wry amused grin at the flood of excitement that flooded through her from Bolth easing her social worries.
Sadly the blue's excitement wasn't soothing all of C'rci's company because before F'nell could move to shake the girl's hand a streak of crimson would dart down the girls arm hissing and spitting, the little firelizard swiping at the man's hand.
"Fasha." C'rci scolded, her voice never raising so much as a octave, but the sheer force of disapproval in the girls voice conveyed in a single word causing the crimson to take to the air for a moment chittering before landing once more on C'rci's shoulder. Lashing her tail around the young rider's neck the firelizard peered from her owner's tresses, little eyes whirling orange and yellow.
"She's a bit protective. Don't worry though she'd never actually attack someone without cause. Shall we try again F'nell?" C'rci asked offering her hand to shake a second time, this time hopefully without firelizard interference.
Krith? Bolth asked sitting back on his haunches before the brown, his head quirked in interest. How did you get so big? Did your hide itch a lot? Mine tells me that my hide itching means I'm growing. She's very good at making the itching stop. Yours looks like he would be very good at stopping your itching as well. Do you think yours likes Mine?

That is good.
"I'm sure." They usually did. He grinned. "I'm not sure if that would be a wise bet to take. I don't usually bet on a sure thing." She certainly had the confidence to back her comment up, and he decided that she would likely be a force to be reckoned with once Bolth was fully grown.
He was a cute little hatchling. "I've got some in my pack if you'd like." He didn't always carry it around, but since he had known that he was going to be swimming, he had brought it along. The lake was fairly safe as far as places to swim went but there was always the chance of scrapping ones hand on a rock.
When she offered her hand, he had just reached out for it when a crimson blur had started to hiss at him. Ah, firelizards. His was fairly mellow as far as they went, but apparently hers was a bit more tempermental. "I understand. I've got a crimson of my own." When she offered her hand a second time, he took and shook it firmly. "It is a pleasure to meet you both."
Krith was still being uncharacteristically chatty with the young one. Just time, little one. You'll be as big as I am, I am sure. Mine is very good at getting rid of the itches, and yes, he likes yours. He thinks that she is very impressive. He nudged the small one gently. Would you like to swim?
"Wise man." C'rci replied flashing F'nell a smile accompanied by a warm chuckle. The offer to use his numbweed though was about to be accepted when Bolth chirped up.
Mine. I'm going to swim with Krith. The blue bugled to her before trotting right into the water and flopping onto his butt in the shallows to stare expectantly between the brown and his own rider. "It might be better to wait until after he gets out of the water to put it on his hide. He'll just wash it off now." C'rci said with a good natured sigh and a shake of her head at her blue's antics.
Bolth merely quirked his head and continued staring expectantly at the pair. Coming Big Krith? Bolth asked knowing his rider would likely come into the water later on when she felt good and ready. Besides as long as he could see her Bolth didn't mind being too far apart.
Fasha had at this point had settled back into her owners hair and had shifted her attention to the blue now in the water. What was he doing? He was getting all wet! Hmph silly boys getting all covered in water when there were perfectly good napping spots to be had.

F'nell chuckled. "I suppose that was to be expected." Sometimes it felt as if dragons were just as much creatures of the water as they were creatures of the air, and when you were right next to the water, well..
Of course, small one. The brown dragon followed the hatchling in, spreading his wings out so he could float. I invited you in, didn't I? He rumbled in amusement, and then, with his tail, splashed water at the young blue.
F'nell grinned. "I'm really surprised that Krith's taken such a liking to Bolth. He isn't normally very interested in other dragons." He wasn't going to complain though, and he had to wonder if perhaps it was because Bolth was still a hatchling. He usually had nothing to do with the newly impressed, but if Krith enjoyed interacting with them, perhaps he should volunteer to do things with them.
Bolth let out a startled squalk as the splash broke over him tossing him about in the water until his head broke the surface chittering and sneezing back at Krith. How'd you do that? The little blue questioned slapping his own tail in the water and swiching it in an attempt to splash Krith, but really only succeeded in getting himself more wet and sending droplets towards the two rider's on the shore.
Holding up her arm to shield herself C'rci chuckled and shrugged. "Bolth's kind of hard to resist. Though there are times when even I have to questioned how he's so chipper during early morning weyr inspections. Then I have my klah and all is usually well." C'rci joked Fasha taking flight to flit about Bolth's head fanning him with her wings and scolding him causing the blue to take off in a gallop through the water towards Krith, Fasha giving chase as the two played.
Ah! Krith! Help the red ones after me! Bolth bugled out playfully as he rolled in the water splashing up at Fasha as the little crimson dodged this way and that.

Use just the tip of your tail. The brown demonstrated as he spoke, amused with the small one. You won't be able to splash far yet, but if you keep practicing, the water will go farther and farther.
F'nell chuckled, as the water splashed towards them rather than Krith. "There is something infectious about him." He shook his head as Krith instructed the little on how to splash. "I do apologize for that. If your little one is anything like mine was as a hatching, you won't be able to wash him without him splashing you with his tail." He nodded at her comment about the klah. "Klah is a lifesaver, isn't it." He hadn't ever had that problem, having had to rise early even as a child, but he certainly had sympathy for those who weren't morning people. "I'm a bit lucky there, I've always been a morning person." He grinned at her, and then glanced out at the dragons playing.
Well, we can't have that. With a thought, he sent out a summons to F'nell's firelizard, and a moment later, a second crimson had joined them, chittering at Krith. Now things are even.
Krith splashed all of them as Drift chased after Fasha, rumbling in his chest. He hadn't had this much fun in a while.
