Darkness. The best time to get anything done. The night was cool and crisp, and the sky was dark with clouds. Stars weren't needed to see by, not for Skah Talutah. He could see well enough without those damned sparkles crowding up the sky. The moon was all he needed, and even when it was blazing away in all of it's full glory it was much better than those dotty fire spots that so many regulars swooned over.

Bleh. Regulars. He had had enough of them. Why did they think they were special? They were the most boring, the most mundane and the most useless type of soquili, and he hated when they thought themselves to be better than nothing. How dare they hold themselves with respect and dignity when they were clearly the lowest form of the magnificent species of soquili?! No, he had little patience and tolerance for them. He didn't want to see them, and if he got the chance he would tear them all limb from limb. But then there would be nothing left to play with.

And so he pondered the many faults and fallacies of other soquili from his perch on the wall of the canyon. The rockfaces stretched many lengths upwards on either side of a wide path but as they went higher they started to grow further and further apart in a jagged line towards the top plateau. It was inside one of the few larger nooks that the bird-like soquili had managed to scramble up and into. It was a shallow nook, just enough that as he was lying now, lengthwise to the canyon's path, his back was against the wall and the outside limbs were hanging over the edge swaying back and forth lightly. The nook was well above the climbing height of any non-winged soquili, and the only thing that came within range of perhaps some tall walkers would be the feathery tuft at the end of Skah's tail as he brushed it back and forth along the red rock, dusting over the claw marks that had been left behind in his climb up.

And should one look up past that, should it catch one's attention, there was a single wiry tree trying to grow amid the barren rock face. It bore no leaves and a measly trunk at best, but it was tough and enough of a resemblance of a perch that it could be used as one.

This perch however was being used by one much smaller. A white raven sat atop this almost-perch head turned and beak tucked under a wing as she napped, or perhaps quietly contemplated her next move. It was hard to tell, sometimes.

Illarion had decided to explore with his siblings. Somewhere along the way, they had all turned around except for him. There was a wanderlust, a call within him to go on. So with sorrow he bid them goodbye on his journey. He didn't regret going on, rather he regretted that they had not come with him.

But here he was in a hot barren place--something called a canyon. He could feel his skin so used to moisture and tangles of watery plants drying out as he stood there. He needed water badly to soothe his skin, which felt like it was starting to scale like an iguana.

His throat felt just as parched as this wasteland--but the last place there had been at least enough water for a drink--but not to soothe his poor skin. If he didn't find something soon...

The buzzards circled ominously.
PostPosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:55 am

The buzzards were being noisier than usual, creaking and cawing at one another and dive bombing each others' tails in an attempt to rip out as many feathers as possible. They were constantly trying to win between one another, as if it mattered. He chuckled at them. They really were rather amusing to watch every now and then, when they were a good distance away anyway. No one wanted to get a face full of feathers.

As it was, single feathers were raining down into the canyon, like the lightest of rains. But it wasn't an empty canyon anymore. Craning his neck to see just what the disturbance below was, his tail flicked more erratically. Purple... long tail... fins. My, my, that was interesting too.

Calling down in a most mocking tone, Skah announced himself. "Fishie, fishie, fishie. Feeling a little... out of water?" Lifting his tail up he fanned himself, indicating the heat of the area as he laughed at the stranger's obvious discomfort.

As the vultures fought over something and circle, Illarion thought he heard a strange sound. A voice? That wasn't right....but it was. As he looked up and around, he found the source. A creature, for he didn't know what else to call it, was mocking him.

Long lank black hair, red tracks on his skin. Clawed feet and a white raven peering high above him down. Talk about creepy...But then, he'd wanted adventure and here it was served right on a plate to him. He did wish his brother was here though...

"Hello...stranger," Illarion greeted hesitantly. "I am thirsty, but fine." He hated the mocking tone, the anger of the one up above him. This felt dangerous. Should he ask him about water? That probably wouldn't be a good idea. "I...guess I'll be on my way then."

It wasn't what he wanted to do, but it was the logical choice.

But what if he did what he wanted and challenged him? There wasn't really a point though--that wasn't knightly or very smart. There was no point in running either--his tail was so heavy, and he was so dry that this creature could catch him and probably shred him.

He's just have to wait and see how the other responded.

Nodding along, a smirk worked it's way across Skah's face, worming it's way into all of his features, and making his eyes shine in an all too common maniacal way. This could be fun, if he played the game right.

Stretching out like a cat would, front legs straight but down as his rump raised into the air first, Skah allowed himself to yawn loudly as he decided what he wanted to do next. Of course any cat chases the favored dish of fish, but he had to play this out right. Simply pouncing down onto the stranger below wasn't much fun. Finishing his stretch, the white stallion began to crawl along the precarious ledge, picking and choosing his way so that he could bring himself down to an outcropping closer down to the ground, a safer distance to jump from should he decide to stand on equal ground to the kelpie.

From his new perch, he stood calmly and allowed his tail to sweep back and forth. Hair of course had to be flicked out of his eyes while he analyzed the stranger, no doubt with that heavy tail, he wouldn't make hard prey, but was he really that hungry? Time to play with his food first and decide if he wanted to eat, later.

Dropping his head down so that his nose poked over the edge, hair falling down and past the rock under his claws. "Leaving already? But you've only just arrived! And the buzzards are really quite hungry, won't you stay for dinner?" His grin turned wicked and his words dripped with sarcasm as he stretched out his claws and scraped them along the rock underfoot.

Illarion took a deep breath, as he glinted up into the sun. It was difficult to see the other male. He turned his eyes slightly away to catch him more out of the corner of his eye. He took a deep breath, "I'm not very hungry,"

So this ....creature was probably really planning on eating him. He needed to get a way out, a way to get the upper hand. But if worse comes to worse, he could use his tail as a weapon. He was ready if he needed to.

Cackling the stallion lowered his front half closer, once more his rump higher in the air, as his tail swiped back and forth like a feathery-tipped whip above his back. Kneading with his claws he called down quietly, "Well, that's a shame now, isn't it?" Raspy from the cackling, his voice was menacing and it was obvious that he had indeed decided that it was playtime, if not snack time.

The buzzards even calmed, holding their breaths and peering down with a million beady eyes to the scene unfolding below them. White Raven sat up on her lofty perch, watching just as silently, but one could argue that there was a grin playing around her pale beak.

Cat-like for a moment more, the stallion shifted his shoulders back and forth before making his leap down to ground level, aiming to land on top of the finned end of the kelpie's tail to pin it against the hard rock underfoot. If he could pull this off, he could probably hold the larger purple stallion in place for a few moments to gain the advantage.

Illarion felt the talons tear through his flash, but he was able to escape being pinned. He felt his breathing coming quickly as the blood flowed out of his wound, staining the rocks crimson. It had been so quick, mere instinct rather than sight had saved him.

He held his tail up, and swatted hard at the other stallion in a warning, not meant to touch or impede but rather to warn him. Stay away, I'll fight if I have to. That's what he wanted to get through to him. He could feel his mouth drying out like his skin, but he would hold his ground.

Pounce! Landing was lovely, if one were to ask his opinion, but the other had reacted quickly, instinctively. Before he could really dig his talons in, he felt them slipping away as the kelpie tugged his tail away from him. No pin for the predator.

Snarling, Skah had been about to leap at the stallion once more, but that too was thwarted by a secondary reaction by the kelpie. Skah dropped to the ground, belly between his paws and warm against the rocks. The tail wouldn't have hit him regardless, but he had also reacted instinctively. The kelpie had faked him out, was warning him away with a feigned tail swat.

From where he crouched he shifted his shoulders back and forth like a lioness before her pounce, but he was not quite ready to try again. Tilting his head a little, his hair fell away lank as ever so that he could take a head-on look at the kelpie. As he looked him over he taunted, "Fishie bites back, does he?" Noticing the blood not only on his own talons but also smeared across the rocks he added on, "And bleeds real nice, too!" Licking his lips Skah contemplated his next move.

Illarion curled his lips in a feral snarl, mirroring the bird-like soquilli. Something animal and instinctual was kicking in. A need and a will for survival. He felt more animal than anything right now. "I'll fight you. I"ll spill your blood before I let you kill me. If you want to get messed up, then let's do it." He held his tail aloft, his teeth bared. His kind weren't known for their niceness. Generations of strong muscles and teeth meant for tearing meat--he would do his best if he had to.

Allowing his shoulders to shift a few more times Skah grinned wider. That was more like it! Playtime was meant for playing, not for giving in! And who could ignore such an enticing invite?

Flicking his tail to help with his propulsion Skah launched himself at the flank that was further away from the tip of this kelpie's tail. He didn't want to find himself being swatted mid-leap with that heavy tail, and this would be the best way to avoid it, get close enough to the base that it could do minimal swings to hit his rump/hind legs and dig his claws into the draft's back to hold on tight.

Fighting the bigger boys was always more interesting than taking down a dainty doe, but of course there will be more retaliation, for which Skah tries to ready himself for. His tail flicked to the side aiming a feathery swat at the kelpie's face, as his fore-talons reached the stallion's flank. Sometimes it would help blind them for a split second, disorient them, make them falter just long enough for him to grab a hold with those bird-like talons.

Illarion wasn't quite prepared for the attack when it happened. For the first time in his life, he called up that animalistic urge to kill that his forebearers had. It was the urge to tear with his meat-eating teeth--the urge to show exactly what he was capable of.

The talons were lunging for his side, but it was too late to dodge that. The best he could do is inflict as much damage as possible, making it difficult for the other to concentrate. He steeled himself as the tail went snapping into his face, his teeth baring.

Chopping down hard onto the meager flesh of the tail, he felt a satisfying crunch and spurt of blood that filled his mouth. He refused to let go, but shook his head in a fashion with the desire to tear and maim.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 27, 2012 8:26 pm

Skah's eyes widened with delight as he watched his talons near and then finally, finally plant in the stallion's flank. But his elation did not last long. The moment his fore-talons sank in as far as they could his eyes snapped shut and a most unnatural scream escaped him. It was blood-curdling and laced with a guttural growl, strange to be coming out of a bird-like creature: unnatural.

The pain in his tail was great, and in that moment of screaming an image flashed through his mind: A bloody mess of black and white. And that was the end of it. His scream came to a sudden stop and his back legs began to kick out as he tried to plant the other pair of talons in the kelpie's side. But the other stallion was not done fighting back. He shook his head back and forth, trying to tear as much destruction as possible. With every shake shooting pains were sent up Skah's tail to where it connected with his spine, but the kelpie would be feeling exact repercussions for each tug. Each stab of pain for Skah would accompany a stab of the same magnitude in the purple stallion's side as the mutant grasped harder to hold on, paws trying to form a ball in the quickly reddening flesh.

Face forming into a grimace, Skah gritted his teeth but kept his attention on the task underfoot: keeping on top of this dangerous draft. Seeing this exciting development sent the scavengers above into a frenzy. They began to caw and scream at each other, or at them, it was all the same to the soquili below. The black-winged buzzards began swooping in and out and creating as much of a ruckus as they could manage. 'Who didn't love a good bloodbath?' the White Raven mused silently. Well, she couldn't blame them, but she sat quietly, merely raising an eyebrow at the manic murder.

Illarion almost dropped Skah's tail, but instead clamped tighter with his teeth to hold on to the one thing that make save him. He could feel the claws digging into his side tearing flesh--probably doing terrible and irreparable damage.

The blackness fought from behind his eyes trying to push him into the darkness and keep him there, but he fought back and sunk his teeth in harder refusing to give in. He had a family, a life and he wasn't going to die like this. He wanted to live--and it was that thought that kept his teeth sinking into the flesh despite how much pain he himself felt.

Letting go meant death--a painful one. Skah would never let him live after what he was doing to him. He would die fighting if he must, trying to take him with him.

Black spots swam before his eyes, and for a moment Illarion thought he was going to lose it and fade away until the realization hit. Crows. Crows and vultures were circling, little black pinpoints in the sky rotating over them both like they would be their next meal. Maybe they knew more than he'd ever give them credit for. Maybe they knew that one of them would soon bleed out or give up...or somehow perish in this forsaken desert.
