Rinkini swished her feline tail from side to side as she sat on a stump waiting for her brother. At times she really did feel like a cat, the lazy nature beating in her chest as strongly as her own heart.... but it was just a fantasty, after all Riri was what she was.
Sweet and innocent looking eyes looked out from the soft features of her face, but they saw too much, understood so much. Her mother had already started to teacher her the ways of a Roma, to tell fortunes and futures.... but all Riri ever saw was death and destruction. Part of her feared it was because of WHEN she was concieved.... under the dark light of All Hallows Eve.
Riri had the unmistakable urge to roll over and lick her hooves but she didn't.... instead she gracefully jumped from her stump and landed on the dirt with a soft 'pfftttt' sound. "Rap where are you...?" She blew out a breath in frustration.... Riri did not like waiting.

Raphael was busy having a discussion with his "friend" when Rini called. She didn't like his friend though. But his friend was always with him, "You have to be quiet while we're with her though. You know she doesn't like you..." He said half apologetically. I'm not sure why. I'm positively delightfulRaphael shrugged his shoulders hurrying along since he could since the impatience in her voice. "Bhen?" He said as he got close to where she should be using the Romani word for sister. He was worried about her, she saw visions and the like--not like he did. Hers were dark and twisted, and when she whispered to him about them--he was afraid and afraid for her. "Are you okay, Rini?" He asks tenatively.

"Phrala." She said, using the word for brother. She smiled softly at him, her tail stilling behind her as she stood still for a moment... trying to figure out if that voice or 'friend' of his was talking to him. She didn't like it, not at all.... as far as Riri was concerned it was a bad omen lingering around her brother and she wanted it gone.
Nothing good ever came of hearing voices.
Still, she put that out of her mind and looked around. The breeze was gentle, yet it whistled through the trees making them appear to be whispering to one another... or prehaps they really where and she simply assumed it was the wind? Shaking her head to bring her back to the future she turned to her brother. "What shall we do today, brother mine?"
Riri was protective of her brother, well, as protective as you could be when your attention was easy swayed by your own desires.... but still... there was something between them. This urge was only heightened by the fact that her brother didn't see well if at all.... one miss step and it could bring his end. Riri had dreamed of such an occurance over and over again in her dreams....
Every time she had been unable to save him, unable to steady his footing on the mountain legde that crumbled beneithe his feet. He was an adult, feathers in his hair, beads flying everywhere...
....she blinked. A tear was running down her cheek.

Raphael stopped next to her, "Whatever you like," he answered. He was very passive. His sister could be quite possessive of him, and quite clingy. She liked to have her own way--and well, he mostly liked her way. She always did want to play the best games anyways, and it pleased her to choose which made him happy.
He could hear something in her voice, the way he always heard it when she had seen the things that haunted her. "Detlene?" He asked softly, barely above a whisper--was she seeing "spirits of dead children"?
He loved her, and he wished he could wipe away those fears. But there was nothing he could do, he's often tried to read her future--to see what it would bring, but he never saw a change. And she knew when he was lying--so why lie to her?
"Is there something I can do?" He asked. His friend mused gently, She seems sad today. I wish we could help. Raphael nodded absently.

Riri gulped but shook her head, it took all of her effort not to scream.... the mere idea of losing her brother shattered her from the inside out. It was even worst to think that maybe she was the course? Or even worst.... that she wasn't there and didn't find out until years later.
She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn't notice Raphael nod his head. Instead she stepped towards him and nuzzled him softly, indulging for a moment in the living breathing heat of him. "Fear not.... all is well."
It didn't take Riri long to bounce back. She just had to, or one day sink so low into her dreams that she would never return to normal again.
"Hmmmm...." She said, tilting her head to one side as she thought about what to do. Part of her wanted to play hide and seek, since the skills it gave her brother would help him in a world full of sight and objects... but not today. No.... she wanted to do something else. "Let's go explore." Riri felt trapped in her skin, it was too tight, too confinding right now.
Her feline tail swished from side to side.

Raphael felt the warmth of his sister as she assured him in a voice he'd long since learned was false. Something must really bother her to nuzzle him like that, affection was not quite his sister's strong point. But she loved him dearly, just as he loved her. It was the way of the Roma, family was important as are traditions. But even to their father, who was Gaje, it seemed quite important too.
Exploring. Raphael loved the sensations of exploring, more so at night when he could open his eyes. But he'd gotten quite used to walking in daylight, not seeing as well as everyone else--just shadows and dim outlines in this too bright world. "Okay, Rini." He said softly, continue to follow the lulling, soothing sound of her voice.
He shook his coat out, down to his little bunny tail. "You want me to lead the way?" He joked knowing that his sister would never permit him to travel a path she hadn't personally inspected.

Raphael was probably the only creature alive that she would permit to call her Rini, everyone else had to call her Riri or Rinkini. Rini... seemed to personal just for any old person to use. She smiled over at him and shook her head softly causing her tiny mane to shake and dance around her features; "Nah.... its ok brother mine. I've got us." She smiled again, not wanting him to feel like it wasn't because she didn't trust him... she did.... she simply prefered being in front... being the one that shaped her own destiny. Plus, she didn't want her brother to walk on a path she hadn't selected given that it was still day time so his sight would be poorer than at night.
In an effort to keep them both distracted as they walked through what seemed sometimes to be an everchanging and moving forest she said; "I heard a rumour...." It was rare Riri actually listened to such silly things but this one had peeked her interest; "...about the fountain of youth." She giggled softly, surely it was just a rumour... but still... the idea of finding such a thing had sparked the fire of interest in Riri.
Looking back her brother again for a moment she asked; "What do you think Rap? Shall we go seeking it?"

Raphael conceded to let his sister lead the way. He was very used to submitting to her, and letting her lead. He was complacent--happy to just amble along with her. After all, what did it matter how lead really? It mattered that they were adventuring together. She liked to lead, so it was some small joy he could give her.
"Sister mine," Raphael mused. "Where did you hear such a fantastic tale? What does it do? Make us younger?" He wrinkled his brow. "But if we get younger will we even exist?" He wiggled his tail as he scurried after her. "I want to know all you know. I'd like to look for it...I think. It'd be an awfully big adventure, wouldn't it?"

Rinkini's tail dragged slightly on the floor behind her, a trail they could follow home should they get lost. With a purr she nuzzled her brother for submitting to her lead, it was a small thing she supposed but it meant a lot to know he trusted her so, especially considering how he was practically blind in the day.
At his questions she wrinkled her nose slightly, "I hope not....." She didn't want to get younger! No, right now she actually wanted to get older.... her body was stil awkward, out of proportion in a way. Not like those elegant mares in the prime of their youth. "...but, I heard it has the power to keep you young. I had assumed it meant to keep you the same age forever though...." It was possible she was wrong, she hadn't even considered that it may reverse time. "Perhaps we should take a butterfly with us? Use it to test the water.... if it turns into a caterpillar then we know we have to wait before we use it?" She turned to look at her brother smiling softly. They were both good looking in Riri's opinion, but considering their parents who would have expected anything else?
She paused a moment, her ears picking up a strange sound. It took her a moment to realise it was a bird.... unlike any she had ever seen but a bird none the less. It plumage so bright it was a wonder she hadn't noticed it miles away. Shaking her head she focused on the conversation at hoof. "I heard that it was hidden.... at a cross road that is flanked by a forest and a mountain." She wasn't completely sure what that meant but she had the image that the 'cross road' was either two rivers crossing paths, or maybe a path that crossed water or even two paths. So that was what they were hunting for today.

Raphael could hear her tail dragging lightly, tracing a path. Father had taught them how to not leave any sign, this was deliberate. They'd be able to find their way back home. He could feel her nuzzle him and he pushed back gently at her in a sign of affection.
"I didn't think about it that way," maybe it would keep them at a certain age. "But do we want to stay this age? What about when we're older, might we like that age better?" He wasn't quite sure this was the age he wanted to stay forever.
He nodded his head gently, "A butterfly would be a good idea but how will we keep it alive and carry it?" He listened intently to her description. "Maybe there's a forest on one side and a mountain on the other?" He offered.

Riri chuckled softly at his words, he may not be aware of it but the tone of each word told her exactly how he was feeling... and he didn't like the idea of staying an eternal foal. Nor, in truth, did Riniki. But she suspected that by the time they found the fountain.... if at all... they would be older. Rinkini knew that if she could pick, she would want to be a young adult forever. Young enough to still look sweet and innocent -something she often took advantage of to get what she wanted- but old enough to be taken seriously when she had something to say. Riri didn't like that most adults looks down on her, saw her as their inferior and simply niave. She rolled her eyes, she knew.... lots! Ok, she had more to learn but her ideas were just as good as anyone else!
Ever since she had been born she had suspected that her mind worked slightly differently, she saw the world the way she wanted to see it... a jaded place ripe for the taking to anyone daring enough to try, but such things took time. Time she would have if they found the fountain of youth. "I agree." She said to Raphael, "Staying a foal forever would get boring. Plus...." She smiled at him and giggled playfully, "I am sure you want those long legs of yours to one day be in proportion." She smiled wide at him, as far as she was concerned only she was allowed to tease her brother, everyone else would face her wrath.
As the question about the butterfly reacher her ears they flicked in aggrivation, this would require some thought. It was a good job they had time. "Well... we will find the fountain first. Then.... " She paused, a new idea coming to mind and changing her chain of thought. "Actually, we could research a way to carry a butterfly on our journey.... I am sure there is one. I remember seeing a stallion with.... em...." She didn't know the word (lantern) so instead she just said, "....a thing around his neck that had fireflies in it." Surely if something allowed fireflies to live then something could be made for a single butterfly. Yes.... they would find the answer.
A soft grin crossed her features at her brother's interpretation of the riddle. He could be right! She would never rule out Raphael's words even if others did. Only a fool believed only they had all the answers. "Maybe.... we can check it out thats for sure!" She gave him a soft kiss on the cheek for his reward. Her eyes lingered on him for a moment, he would break many hearts when they grew up, and the slightly unsure colt that walked beside her would become a glorious male... she could feel it, taste it in the air. Riri was also sure of one other thing, he would one day get his heart broken. She wasn't sure how she knew... she just did. But what would cause the heart break? Would it be a lover? Or a friend? Or... and the very thought of this sickened her... would she somehow be involved? Right now Riri couldn't imagine a world without her brother, but she also knew that if it would save him from something worst she would break connections with him to protect her... even as it shattered her own heart to dust.
She prayed that day would never come. She prayed she was wrong. But what were the changes of that happening?

Raphael followed along with her, listening intently to his sister. Good, she didn't want to be a foal forever too...He had been slightly worried about that. He didn't want to be a foal forever...but if she did, then of course, he would have stayed with her. He didn't ever want to leave her, she was his best friend--his only friend. She understood about him, understood his eyes. Sure, she was overprotective, but she loved him and that mattered.
"My legs aren't that long," he made a disgruntled sound. "Maybe you'll finally grow into that tail," he giggled lightly knowing the kind of face Rini would make.
He listened to her suggestion of the butterfly. "Maybe something like a jar? With holes?" He wondered aloud. But the problem really wasn't so much keeping it alive as catching it. They were quick, but were they really that quick?
She kissed him lightly, and he felt a surge of affection for his sister. Were all sister's this amazing or was it simply that only Rini was this amazing? But she was silent, he realized. It weighed heavily on him as they walked. She was having one of her dark thoughts that she was prone to having. She had them from time to time, and as much as he wanted her to she'd never really talked about them.
"Rini," he said it softly hurrying to catch up. "You know you can tell me anything, right?" He offered gently.

Rir grinned playfully at her brother as he commented on her tail, she brought up the feline like limb, stroking under his chin. "My tail is purrrrrfect," He said, "You are just jealous that your's if like a rabbit while I am a cat." She stopped then, and kissed her brother again. Sometimes she worried that she was too affectionate towards him.... but at the same time, she couldn't help it. "Don't worry. This feline won't let anything happen to her 'pet'" She teased, bopping him on the nose with her tail before skipping away.
"A jar with holes...." She mused, having no idea where they would find such a thing even if it would work. Riri wasn't fond of the two-leggers or their camps, and so did her best to avoid them at all costs. She didn't want to be captured... or worst, to have Rap captured, and not just because their mother would be mad at her. "We will figure something out." She said, the statement more to herself as she contemplated it. They would have to find the hidden path first.
As Rap's words turned serious Riri couldn't help but frown. Their was a sadness lingering behind each of her brothers words and it made her want to comfort him. Still, she couldn't bring herself to tell him her greatest fear. Doing her best to put on a smile she said; "I know. You are the only one I would tell my secrets too." Truth. Yet, there were simply some things she wouldn't... couldn't share. "I don't know what I would do without you." She said seriously. Almost regretting it since it seemed to unscrew the tight cap she had on her emotions, and in that moment she couldn't help but feel like she was going to cry. "Sorry....." She whispered, suddenly feeling defeated.
She turned away from him, not wanting him to see her vunderability. It took a moment to focus her thoughts, but eventually she managed to muster forth the ability to speak once more. "Where should we go first?" Her words were spoken quietly now, almost as if they were spoken from some distant part of her... while the real part of her contemplated far more important matters.

Raphael couldn't help but giggle as her tail tickled his chin and nose. He twitched his tail as she spoke of hers, "You're just jealous of my cute bunniness!" He pushed into her shoulder. Again, he realized she really was the best sister in the world.
He could tell that her mind wasn't really on the jar or the path too much. She was in that distant world where something intangible was the matter, something he couldn't help her with because she never told him fully. He listened to her voice break, and the way she talked about secrets. She had always told him hers and he told her all of his. But this secret--what ever dark and terrifying thing it was...was the one secret that she kept from him and the most important.
"Don't be sorry," he whispered back as he opened his eyes wider at her. He could see the way her eyes were shining. "I won't leave you, I promise." He paused. She was trying to brush off the topic and move past it, but a sudden thought occurred to him. "Is that...is that what you're worried about?"

Riri couldn't help laugh along side her brother, "Jealous?" She chirped, nipping playfully at Raphael's mane. "Watch it!" She chuckled more, "You never know, I might decide to take a liking to rabbit and pounce you!" As always with her brother she let him push at her, in all honesty she was pretty much willing to let him get with anything... but he was the only one, he was always the only one. Then again, her relationship with her brother was a special one indeed. She would seriously do just about anything for him... including commit a crime simply to keep him safe.
As he whispered his soft sweet words she couldn't help but smile, he always knew how to drag her back to reality. She hated that she made him worry, that she had to look at him with teary eyes and a fast beating heart. Yet the words she really hoped he could keep seemed all too easy to say.... I won't leave you, I promise? Oh so easy, yet oh so hard! It was the one promise she knew he could never really keep.... he had no control over it after all, but what they did have control over was cherishing the time they did have! And that was something Riri planned to do with every sap of enerfy she possessed, with every beating of her heart... she never wanted to be without her brother! Never.
Her thoughts were shattered the moment he spoke again, the innocence in his voice, the obviousness that he didn't have a clue what ailed her so bad. "No...." She said, then frowned, that was a lie? Right? Riri wasn't completely sure, even as she continued, "Yes... no... I dunno." She sighed and stopped in her tracks. Her head lowered to the forest floor. Should she tell him? No! She couldn't, after all no one should have to endure what she saw, what she felt, no one! Even if it was all in her imagination, even if it was only made up... she couldn't do that to Rap. Looking up at him she smiled softly, "In part," she settled with, "Please... don't ask for too many details." Sadness lingered in her expression and in her desperation she approached her brother, wrapping her tail around Rap's leg and using her head to pull him close in a warm embrace. "Shall we go find some treats to eat?" She wanted a distraction... any distraction.
"Maybe we could find... apples... or berries... or something really sweet and yummy like honey?" Desperation probably shone brightly through the tone in her voice but she didn't stop. She wanted something else to think about, something that wasn't tainted and tarnished by blood and guts and death. Death was cold and heartless.... but that wasn't the Rap she knew, not the warm and gentle colt she held and laughed with, who she shared her secrets with and played with... no... he was the opposite of death. He was life.
