The first rays of the morning strayed into the mouth of the cave illuminating the stallion's white hooves as he arched his back and stretched his neck by bringing his head back as far as it would go, nose pointed at the ceiling above him. Shaking his short mane out Hӓxan took a step forward cautiously, poking his nose into the sunlight first followed by the rest of his head shortly. Pausing there, he closed his eyes and let his ears swivel to check if the area was clear. He could hear no suspicious rustling or creeping, and thus allowed himself to yawn as he stretched out his back legs and finally strode into the sunlight completely.
Looking around, Hӓxan had a feeling he was forgetting something, and though his brow furrowed his ever grinning skull markings hid most of his emotions and expressions rather well. The sun was useful, sure, but it really did accost in the morning, in his humble opinion. Taking to a trot around the area, Hӓxan perked his ears back up and began to pay attention to his surroundings, shrugging aside that nagging feeling of forgetfulness. If it was important enough, it would come back to him, he felt. Now then... there had been a few rodents rummaging about the last few days... where had they gone to...
Normally keeping his wings folded against his side when he wasn't flying, the black stallion raised them slightly, having an idea in mind if he could just locate those pesky rodents once more. It wasn't long before he found them, and when he did he did something unexpected. Throwing out his wings with as much force as he could from his stationary position, they blasted the brush before him with a giant gust of wind, cracking twigs in the process. They were exposed for a mere second before his teeth darted in and crunched down upon their minute bodies. They were dead before they knew what hit them. Chuckling to himself, the Kalona shook out his wings and pranced in a circle, a victory dance of a sort at his quick snatch of a snack.

Karloff woke up early, which was not quite an easy thing to do for a feline. He gave a low purr to Ailbhe and nuzzled her before going--leaving Diavolos behind. He didn't much like leaving her, but this was a promise he'd made a year ago. He'd only be gone for a day or two.
Sometime after he had met and fled from Ailbhe, he met Haxan. Strong, free, and wild with the outlines of mocking bones etched on his skin. He had found a brotherhood with this stallion and they had promise to meet at least once a year.
The year had come and gone, the seasons had faded and the heat of the summer was overwhelming. It was hard to believe how far he'd come in that year.
He had looked to be turned. He had found a skinwalker before discovering that it wasn't a path he wanted. The pain wouldn't go away--it would only become warped and twisted. Then Maion had helped him find answers. He'd come to understand his own cravings, come to find that he wasn't a lost cause. It was right to love Ailbhe.
He ran as he got closer to the familiar haunts of his old friend. Would Haxan remember? Would he have changed?

A chew, maybe even two if it was lucky, and the rodents were gone without a trace. Cruel? Perhaps, but one had to eat, right? Hah, as if he really cared about their little feelings. They were just food to him, and that need not take up more of his time than necessary.
He had spent the last year growing, eating, hunting, prowling, and more growing. Having finally stopped growing Haxan had become a beast. He was tall, muscular and had an attitude to back up his snarling words. Picking at weaker beings every so often, he had experienced his share of bullying (him doing the bullying, that is), as he grew through his foalhood and adolescence. Having evolved and learned over time that such acts were not worth his time, the Kalona no longer participated in such trivial pickings. Instead he was still working on perfecting his hunting skills. Does could go down no problem, but stags he still needed to tweak a little, what with their antlers and larger size.
When he wasn't hunting he was trying to seek out other Kalonas. They made sense to him and as he met more and more non-kalonas he had slowly began to make up his mind: he didn't like non-pures. Becoming a purist, Hӓxan's patience and tolerance towards other breeds was disappearing. Indeed if he were to think about it and identify any non-Kalonas that he could respect he could name just one: a young colt that was dark of coat and wild of heart. It was that colt he was bringing to mind as he completed a few more circles when he nearly mistook reality for his mental images.
For a moment he thought to himself, 'No, Karloff had been much smaller than that when I saw him! We were both only foals, but I suppose that could be what he looks like now...' Halting to a stop, he squinted his eyes and tried to focus on the image. Was he seeing the real Karloff or was he just going crazy and seeing things?
"Karloff?" Tilting his head so that his mane fell away from his eyes, Hӓxan was not sure if he was talking to another or to a mirage. Surely he was imagining a full-grown Karloff trotting into the area.

Before he even saw Haxan, he could smell the hunting grounds. The fresh whiff of blood on the wind...staining a leaf or the ground. He stopped and sniffed again for a moment, his own mouth salivating at the thought of blood for a moment.
He trotted to where he felt the scent of Haxan's blood was stronger--not so far away. It smelled strong and flavoured, like a spicy dish. A sound caught his hearing, and he dug his hooves into the ground and flew toward the sound of his friend.
A familiar voice called out his name, and he slowed to show himself fully. "It's me Haxan. Did you not remember our meeting?" He breathed deeply, taking in his friend's appearance. Tall, and strong about the same height as he was. The bones more pronounced, flecks of blood around his mouth. His friend had just been feasting. "Drinking without me?" Karloff's deep voice rumbled pleasantly as he smiled.

Righting his head when his friend came into full view Haxan put on a charming smile, (if a kalona could have one, really), and laughed whole-heartedly: a deep, calm sound. "I wouldn't do anything of the sort!" Turning his head away in pretend shame he crossed a leg over the other and kicked the ground as if he were being bashful. His reply counted for both of the questions asked, so no need to repeat himself but when his friend came a little closer Haxan deftly crossed his hind leg over also and did a quick sidestep. Along with that tricky footwork, his wing unfolded just enough so it playfully bumped up against Karloff's chest with a small thump.
Glint in his barely seen eyes showed his current mood. Afterall, who didn't like to hunt with a bit of spunk and fun involved? "It was just a snack, I assure you! The main course is still out there..." Carefully lifting the wing that had bumped Karloff's chest he brought it up and over his friend's head and as he took a step to the side and turned, it ended up cradling his opposite shoulder as he pulled up beside him. The other wing in the meantime had opened up and swept slowly out towards the woods just beyond the clearing they stood in. "... waiting for us to chase it down..."

Karloff couldn't help laughing at his friend's ways. He'd always been the less serious, more fun of the two. It had been their way in their time together. Hunt, make a game of it--see who was better. He bumped Haxan back, "It's good to see you, old friend."
He looked off in the distance, "It's been a long time. Rules still the same?" It'd always been before that he gets the blood, and Haxan the meet since it was their desired meals.

Taking the playful shove just as it was meant, Haxan grinned all the wider. The same shoving game as always, only this time they were double the weight as last time, and tons taller. A little play never hurt anyone! Granted, Haxan had grown up alone, and while their winter had trudged along slowly for the first few days, the two colts had gotten used to one another and eventually really got to know each other. Games and scuffles were commonplace, but by the end of that winter, they had become the closest of friends. In fact, the only true friend that Haxan had. Even since, he'd met others, even of the noble breed of Kalona, but none that he'd become close with. As far as Haxan knew, Karloff was the closest that this kalona had as family.
Squeezing his wing in to pull Karloff closer in a brief hug, Haxan replied nonchalantly, "Of course! We chase, compete to kill, and when it's all said and done you drink to your heart's content and I shall tear the sucker apart for his delicious meat. What could be better?" As he retracted his wings back to his sides, he bumped rumps with the regular stallion before beginning in a friendly sprint, allowing enough time for the other to catch up before he would take to the sky.
